Summertime! The kids are off to camp (and some-times the adults; I’m returning to Camp Harlam this summer as faculty, this time as the dean, along with 16 of our kids!), the beach house is open, and the pace of life is, hopefully, a little slower. It is easy in this time of holiday, of summer break, to leave behind all our cares and focus entirely upon ourselves and our needs; however, it should not be a time to leave behind our Jewish identity, nor let our commitments dwindle. As much as we joke that ‘no one is Jewish over the summer,’ we should never leave our enthu-siasm for Judaism behind with the parkas. This is not to say that the summer must be a time of great seriousness; the days are too pretty to waste on great effort. However, there are little ways to bring yiddishkeit with you out of the school year and into the lazy days of summer, little things we can do to bring our Jewishness to the beach, the mountains, or the back yard:

Make Shabbat outside: all you need is some tea-

candles, a sunset, a little bit of challah and a little bit of juice as you say goodbye to the week that was and welcome the Sabbath bride, be it on the beach or in the woods.

Tzedakah at “the Beach” (or “the Shore”): have

the kids save up all the change from every video game, ice cream or other treat over vacation. Put it away to donate and have the family decide where it’s going. Reading: The kids have their summer reading list,

book or two to the list, something you’ve al-ways wanted to read about, or study. Now’s your chance! Hurting for ideas? Go to www.urj.org/books for the Reform Move-ment’s list of Significant Jewish books.

Find the local synagogue: Whether you’re off to the Jersey Shore or Martha’s Vineyard, the mountains or staying home, there’s bound to be a synagogue nearby—including our own! Find out their Friday Night service schedule, or if they of-fer a tour, have some kind of summer course for you or some other activity: a Lunch & Learn, craft experience, or storytelling. If you’re away, seeing another synagogue can be a refreshing break from the mini-golf! Get Crafty: like to knit? Sew? Needlepoint

Quilt? Woodwork? Practice making a Jewish object: a kippah, a new talit, a challah cover, a pushke, or something else!

The rains pass, but our attention to Jewish life need not pass with it. I hope you’ll pack your yid-dishkeit along with your bathing suit and sun-screen.

Learning on Lea: Adult Learning at CBE

There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months, with very special guests, some serious self-reflection, as well as humor and looking at stories we THINK we know. Save these dates, as our learning begins with preparations for and learning during the High Holidays. Wednesday, September 13 at 5:30 PM: Tochecha: The Art of Rebuke. Before we forgive, there must be rebuke. How can we do it lovingly and intentionally? Why should we? How can we prepare ourselves to hear rebuke? Saturday, September 16 at 7:00 PM: Selichot Service with singer/songwriter Chana Rothman. Friday, September 22 at 12:00 PM: Second Day Rosh Hashanah Study. We welcome congregant and University of Delaware Professor Aaron Kupchik to speak on The REAL School Safety Problem: The Long Term Consequences of Harsh Punishment. Wednesday, September 27 at 5:30 PM:

Tehuva: Re-pentence and Re-turn Then watch for more information about the upcom-ing programs that begin in October, including the start of our film series

and exploring the bible stories that give Holly-wood a run for their money….and much more as we continue the year. Looking for More Beth Emeth Landscaping

Volunteers The House and Grounds Committee is look-ing for additional volunteers to assist with main-taining the landscaping around the Beth Emeth facilities. The committee would like to create a pool of people whom we can call upon to join with us when a work event is scheduled. The work is usually scheduled about four times each year and is done on Sunday mornings. We do not expect that everyone will be able to attend every work event, but perhaps once or twice per year would be appreciated. Previous-ly, the work of our volunteers has saved us

several thousand dollars annually. Presently we do not have another event scheduled, but we expect to have one sometime in late August or early September (prior to the High Holidays). If we don’t see a growth

in our volunteer group, we will need to hire a landscaping service which will add an additional expense to our operating budget. Please volunteer and come out to help beautify the grounds around the synagogue. Any amount of time you can contribute will be appreciated. Consider helping just an hour, or more, if you can. Volunteers - Please contact Phil Weinberg and volunteer to be placed on our list. He may be reached by phone at 302-475-4962 or via Email at [email protected].

Book of Memory

The Book of Memory forms have been mailed. Please return all entries by August 7, 2017. If you have not received your Book of Memory en-try, contact the business office at 302-764-2393 so that one may be mailed to you.

Do a Mitzvah, Sponsor an Oneg

Do you have a special event coming up? A birthday, anniversary or baby naming. Why not honor it by sponsoring a Friday night Oneg . Please do a mitzvah and call the Temple office at 302-764-2393 to select a date.

hours together (in person, on screen, and in group text messages in between). I cannot wait for our classes to start back up, and to begin our Capstone Projects. I come away from all of this, not only with new ideas and resources, but also with new invigoration and inspiration for continuing to build powerful learning at CBE. Following the (aptly named) Intensive, I took a few extra days in NYC, and saw Come From Away, which recently won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. Like other shows I’ve seen this year, this took a place at the top of my list of shows. It focuses on the real story of 38 airplanes that were rerouted to Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11--nearly doubling the town’s population. The story is sad, funny, and hopeful. The people in the town and those stranded, came together to help each other through the challenge of the time, pitch-ing in, sharing stories, and forming unique relation-ships. Each actor portrays multiple characters, a powerful tool to express both the confusion of that time and the similarity of the human condition, de-spite apparent differences. The show is really more about people in general, than the lens through which those particular people’s stories are told. The other day, a friend (who happened to grow up at CBE), posted lyrics from the show that I quote above and connected it to summer camp. As I thought about it, I considered the strange similari-ties. While people come to camp for VERY differ-ent reasons than those in Gander, in both, people come together in an isolated place and form rela-tionships with strangers--learning important les-sons about themselves in the process. While I didn’t get to spend significant time at camp, I will stop and visit several URJ Camps where we have young people this summer. When I drive up to Camp Harlam, where I spent many summers of my childhood as a camper and late adolescence as a counselor, I will indeed have that sense of visiting that part of my heart that will al-ways be there. I think that’s true for most people for whom camp is successful. And perhaps in a way, that’s true for my time at the summer intensive. While it’s hardly in the mid-dle of nowhere, NYC is a place that’s apart, with people I wouldn’t otherwise know, challenging our-selves and each other with new ideas and experi-ences. I think that’s the essence of what it’s all about. I hope that you find time to have experienc-es like that for yourselves.

“Somewhere, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of who knows where, there you'll find... Something in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of

clear blue air, you've found your heart. And left a part of you behind.”

--”Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere,” Come From Away

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m in the midst of getting an MA in Religious Education at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion (the seminary of the Reform Movement). This program has been an important way through which I’ve learned to articulate many of the ideas I’ve developed over the years, and differently consider what it means to be an Educational Leader. In addition to powerful and engaging learning, the cohort of 11 other educators and I, have formed deep relationships--learning together both in and out of the classroom, as well as becoming friends. We share ideas, laugh a lot, and use each other as resources. It is great to have a group with whom to bounce ideas around, share resources, help each other through challenges, and celebrate successes. Our recent Summer Intensive was no different: two weeks in New York City, learning together with great teachers; engaging with leaders in Jewish edu-cation; sharing prayer through creative worship; and exploring NYC: often discussing the material we were learning over meals, during walks, or even on the Staten Island Ferry (which we took simply for the sake of the experience). Throughout, both in and out of the classroom, we considered how different ideas we were exploring connected to a variety of aspects of life. We took Jewish ideas and considered their appli-cations to our own work and to education in general--and took secular ideas and considered how those concepts relate to Jewish Education. We even got to have a workshop with film maker Hanan Harchol (check out some of his work here: http://www.hananharchol.com), who took us through the process of making short films, exploring text in a completely different way. We learned a lot and we learned deeply. And we had fun. We engaged in the kind of laughter that is a part of building relation-ships, inevitable when 12 people spend countless

I know you have to have heard about our new website by now, right? We talked about it at last Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we’ve had sever-al articles and notices mentioning it, and if you’ve called the office for information lately, they have re-directed you to it because most all of the infor-mation they get calls about is on the website. I know that our previous website left a lot to be de-sired, but this new(ish) one is fantastic. The most striking differences are: Homepage Information: The first thing you’ll see is our Home Page Slider. It has some consistent, as well as some changing photos having to do with what is going on at CBE. Below that is a list of the events coming up over the next week taken directly from the calendar. Calendar: Right from the home page menu there is access to our entire calendar. Events are updat-ed in it the second we are aware of them planned. You can go to a specific date, or you can scroll through and just look at what’s coming up. Once you find an event that looks interesting, click on it and you can usually get more information and even RSVP right there. Directory: There is always a current, up-to-date directory under “Our Community” from the menu. You are able to adjust how much is available from this directory yourself, but most importantly, you can find contact information for your congregational family. Blogs and the Orbit: These include recent ser-mons, blog articles and our monthly Orbit in PDF form to download or view in your browser. Donate: As we attempt to move to a culture of philanthropy, we encourage our congregants to use this link to make donations to Beth Emeth, not only in the form of your annual commitment, but for oth-er opportunities such as yahrzeits and simchas as well. Your Account: You have access to your account at Beth Emeth. You can update your phone num-ber, email, address, yahrzeits and account pay-ment history right from here. Web streaming: The link to our web streaming service, where we archive Friday night as well as bar and bat mitzvah services, is on the right hand

sidebar of the page. Smartphone Access: This website, unlike our pre-vious one, is fully functional using your smartphone. These and many more improvements are all available at your fingertips, but many only if you are signed in. If you have not signed in in the past, just click on “Login” in the upper right-hand corner, then click on “Forgot Password” and you will begin the process of obtaining a unique, temporary password that you will be prompted to change once you are

signed in. The site’s address is bethemethde.org. Have fun playing around!!

You Can Make a Difference

There is no law that says you must have a will or other estate plan. The state does have laws that direct the distribution of assets if there is no will. Writing a will permits you to develop a distribution plan that provides for your loved ones and for insti-tutions that are important to you. We are asking that you remember Beth Emeth as one of those in-stitutions. Congregations these days are having budget problems maintaining their school and wor-ship activities and fear that the future may require more than the community can provide. Building an active and vital Beth Emeth for today and tomorrow is our goal. You can make a difference. Create a Beth Emeth legacy. Become a member of our L’Dor v’Dor Legacy Circle. THANK YOU to our Legacy Team. Heather Margolin, Ethel Parsons, Richard Goldbaum, Mike Joseph and Connie Kreshtool worked together to meet the Grinspoon Challenge. They enrolled at least 50 congregants who promise to include Beth Emeth in their wills and received a $20,000 grant for the congregation.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

Beth Emeth Memorial Park will continue its longstanding tradition of holding a memorial ser-vice on Sunday afternoon between Rosh Hasha-nah and Yom Kippur. This years’ service will be held on September 24 at 3:00 PM at the ceme-tery located on 1220 Faulkland Road. It is, of course, no coincidence that Jewish tradition also urges us to visit the graves of loved ones during this season. It doesn’t matter whether your loved ones are interred at Beth Emeth Memorial Park, in anoth-er nearby cemetery or in some other part of the country. Join us under the canopy to hear their names read aloud and to stand together as we recite Kaddish. The ceremony is brief, moving and dignified. The natural surroundings provide

just the right time and place to reconnect with past memories and contemplate new begin-nings. Because of the ever-growing list of names that are read during the service, we will read the names remembered by those actually attending the service. However, all of the names provided to us on a remembrance card will appear on a handout at the service. If you would like to sub-mit names, please contact Beth Emeth Memorial Park at 302-764-2393 and we will send you a remembrance card to fill out. Please note that, in order for the names you send us to be includ-ed in the printed listing at the service, you must submit your names by September 1.

Hosts are Needed The Caring Committee is looking for congre-gants who are interested in including CBE mem-bers who may be alone during the upcoming High Holidays, in their Erev Rosh HaShanah din-ner on September 20. If you have room at your table for one or more extra guests, please con-tact Marcia Adato at [email protected] or at 302-478-8175. Once we identify potential hosts, we will give interested members the opportunity to be part of another member’s Erev Rosh HaShanah dinner.

Caring Committee Soup

Regular and low-sodium soups made by Caring Committee members are available in the Beth Emeth freezer. Any congregant who would bene-fit is welcome to help themselves to a container of soup. If you know someone who might benefit

The Caring Committee The Caring Committee provides opportunities to help members of our CBE community in a va-riety of ways. They include making soup and meals, writing cards and making calls, consoling the bereaved, distributing holiday gifts and visit-ing members of our community in facilities and in their homes. The Committee meets monthly from September through May. New committee mem-

bers are always welcome. Contact Judith Insinga at [email protected] or 302-764-4093 for more in-formation about the Caring Committee

IN THE CBE LIBRARY Congregation Beth Emeth has a library of

Jewish-oriented books and other media, located just off the entrance lobby. We’ve got many of the same books as the public library, and many of special interest that they don’t have. And our borrowing procedure is much less bureaucratic than theirs – just slip the borrower’s card out of the pocket that’s inside the back cover, write your name, email address and date on the card, and put it in the little file box. That’s all there is to it!

During the school year, there is a table next to the Library’s main door where we display our newest acquisitions (purchased or donated). All are welcome to borrow them. In our young chil-dren’s section (below the windows), we currently display a group of books with a camp theme.

We use a special classification system of cat-alog numbers developed for Judaica libraries. In this system, the letter “z” precedes all adult non-fiction, “jz” precedes the number for non-fiction books dedicated to Young Adult (”Juvenile” – youngsters in the middle & high school age groups). The letters “ez” precede the number for

Sisterhood News Summer Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House of Delaware - On August 28, 2017 from 2:30 PM-6:00 PM, we'll spend the afternoon and early evening preparing and serving dinner to the families at the Ronald McDonald House. If you've never before done this, it truly is a mean-ingful and heartwarming experience. As a group, we will create a buffet style meal of our choice for 80-85 people. We'll be buying and preparing a lot of food! Due to limited kitchen capacity, we are limited to no more than 14 people. If you want to bring your children to help, the minimum age for food preparation is 12 years old. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Missy Rosenthal at [email protected]. We'll be collecting Wish List items for the Ronald McDonald House and we'll bring these donations to the House on both volunteer dates. Please drop off any items in the syna-gogue or religious school office or bring them with you on the day you are volunteering! Here is a list of items they need: individually wrapped snacks, juice boxes, canned meats, canned or fresh fruit, cereal, 1 or 2 gallon freezer bags, stor-age containers – Gladlock, Corelle® Liv-ingware™ winter frost white dinner plates, des-sert plates and 18 oz. bowls, paper, (white or col-or, letter size) disinfectant cleaner-Lysol, Soft Scrub, disinfectant wipes, mops, Febreeze, hair brushes, facial tissues, queen-sized cotton/ply-cotton bed sheet sets, full-sized cotton/poly-cotton bed sheet sets, twin-sized cotton/poly-cotton bed sheet sets, white or light colored towel sets-bath, hand, wash cloths and dish towels.

A portion of the cost will be donated to Beth Emeth Sister-hood. All orders placed after July 24 will have a $4.00 shipping charge for each jar of hon-ey. A Note about Contributions

We welcome all contributions. If you wish the contribution to be listed in The Orbit, there is a minimum donation of $10. This also covers the mailing of ONE acknowledgement card. Please be sure to include the address if the person(s) are not members of Congregation Beth Emeth. The card is mailed when the check is received. It is important that when you send in a donation, you include a note with your check, printed clearly or typed, stating exactly how you want the contri-bution to read. For example: Mary and John Doe in memory of…, Mr. and Mrs. John Doe in honor of…, Mr. John and Mrs. Mary Doe in beloved memory of…. Please remember to write legibly and to list which funds you would like your donation to go to. Please make your check payable to Congregation Beth Emeth. Also, The Orbit usually runs three weeks ahead of schedule so it may take three weeks for your donation to appear in The Orbit from the date you mail it. Thank you for your co-operation.

Notice

All contributions sent to the Temple should be made out to “Congregation Beth Emeth.” If a special fund is desired, its name should be noted on the memo line of the check or in an accompa-nying letter. Thank you for your cooperation.
