What is Volume?

• Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by some closed boundary, in other words, the space that a substance (solid, liquid, gas)or shape occupies.

How do you calculate Volume?

• Volume could be determined by using a simple formula.

• V= (LENGTH)(WIDTH)(HEIGHT)

In a given rectangle…

• Lets’ calculate the volume of a given rectangle with the following measures.

• L= 4• W= 3• H= 3

Page 5: Volume. What is Volume? Volume is the quantity of three-dimensional space enclosed by some closed boundary, in other words, the space that a substance

• Using the formula substitute the letters for values.

• V= (L)(W)(H)• V= (4)(3)(3)• V= 4X3=12• V= 12X3=36

V= 36

You can also….• To determine the volume of a rectangular

prism made out of cubic units you could also count the number of cubic units the rectangular prism contains to determine volume.

For this particular shape you could count the number of cubic units of the first layer at the bottom of the prism which are twelve and keep on adding twelve depending on the number of layers you want the prism to have.

By counting, you can determine…

This shape has 3 layers of twelve cubic units.Its volume is represented by the 3 layers that it contains.If we were to add the 3 layers, we could determine that the volume of the shape is 36. V= 12x3 V=36
