A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. Likewise, an organization is only as strong as it's weakest member. This bonsai club has an admirable number of strong members. Those who are willing to help maintain the club by not only doing what is required but often to go beyond the necessary and help many others in need. Often, I am amazed at the skills and experiences being shared by these strong members trying to keep their club alive. I am proud to have been your president of this club where these extraordinary members continue to put forth so much effort toward the survival of this group dedicated to advancing the Art of Bonsai. President Richard.

Once again we will have the pleasure of enjoying another of Dan “Doc” Ward’s informative presentations at our March meeting. ......

Mr. Ward’s demo will center around the finer aspects of carving. Along with the demo, we will also hold our regular mentor guided worksop. Bring your stuff.

- February Workshop -Our skilled bonsai teachers and mentors were again on hand to work one-on-one with our club members.

All MLBC Members are asked to confirm their contact information with our Club Secretary, Barbara Olivier. ~We will now have at each meeting a sales table wherein members can place items for sale. The Club will receive 20% of all sales. ~Standing Committees, required by our Club bylaws, must be filled to meet the necessary requirements for our Club to be recognized as a Club by the GSBF. MLBC members are to fill these committees. ~Field trips and community demonstrations are to be planned for the coming year, if enough interest from our Club membership should be forthcoming. ~Three bonsai classes, separate from our meetings, are to be offered to the public this coming year. The first of these three is scheduled to be held at Solmons Garden Nursery in Sonora on April 20th from 10 AM to noon. Cost for this class is $35.00 which includes a pot, screen material and a tree. Sign up with Richard McKinstry if you are interested. Two other classes to be held will be at Calaveras Hardware in Angles Camp, and at Twain Harte Nursery in Twain Harte. Dates for the latter two will be announce at a later time. ~ There will now be workshops at every club meeting, so don’t forget to bring all you plants and tools. These workshops will be made-up of two groups, basic and advanced, meeting in separate areas of our meeting room. Each group will have a mentor to provide one-on-one guidance for those persons so desiring assistance. Also, nursery stock will be available for those of you who forgot to bring something to work on. These nursery trees will remain the property of the MLBC and subsequently be included in our Club raffle. ~ Our Summer Potluck Picnic will be held on July 6th and we are currently soliciting location ideas. The MLBC will supply hamburgers, hotdogs, sodas, water and ice tea. Members are asked to fill-in with their favorite potluck items. We may need a barbecue grill, depending on the site selected. ~

V i n c e O w y o u n g shared a remarkable s t o r y a b o u t h i s shohin crabapple tree he is holding.....

Vince indicated that the seed was originally brought to California from Japan by Kathy Shaner over 30 years ago. As its blooms are just now beginning to develop, there is only one apple, (about the size of a pea), left on the tree. Vince also brought an oak to be raffled off after he styled it during the workshop secession.

Vince Owyoung, above right, prepares a custom made bending clamp for Doug Lau’s Coast Redwood, while Frank Garcia, above, works with his collected juniper as daughter Miranda, our youngest club member, mixes soil for the new tree.

- Mammoth Bonsai Sale & Garden Field Trip -

Four MLBC members attended the Golden State Bonsai Federation’s Mammoth Bonsai Sale in Oakland on Sunday, February 17th and found that the s a l e w a s a p p r o p r i a t e l y n a m e d “MAMMOTH”. Pictured above, left to right are: Joan Scroggs, Niki Hobba, Patti & Pat Cooper.... Pictured below, is just a portion of one of the several bonsai sale rooms that sold out very quickly..........

Our Garden docent is standing next to the oldest living bonsai in the United States, a Daimyo Oak, native to Japan & China. The Oak was presented to President Abraham Lincoln by the Japanese Government in the 1860’s as a then young bonsai.Pictured to the right of the Daimyo Oak is a local Sierra Juniper bonsai tree, estimated to be of more than 350 years of age, collected locally near Sonora Pass in the 1980‘s, then subsequently donated to the Garden Museum by Joan Scroggs in 2008.

Gigantic vendor sales area..

Bonsai Master, Kathy Shaner presented a very un ique lecture/demonstration as she w o r k e d o n e - o n - o n e w i t h individuals from the audience that had purchased bonsai trees from the morning sales event who desired advise on the styling of their new trees.....

Joan Scroggs stands beside two of the large Sierra Juniper bonsai trees she donated to the Garden

Our MLBC’s, Nikie Hobba, smiles with delight at the beautiful Garden’s display as she enjoys the warm afternoon sunshine....

On what started out to be a very cold and snowy morning in Sonora, really turned out to be a very warn sunny day in Oakland for the Mammoth Bonsai Sale Fundraiser Event.

7 - Propagating: Cuttings & Collecting - Now is the time to dig-up that favorite small garden tree or bush that might make a future bonsai. Also, now is the time for rooting some of your favorite cuttings for new spring growth.

8. Grafting - Start now with your graft ing projects. You on ly have a week or two left.

1 - Watering - Even though the calendar says it’s still officially winter, and the weather guy on TV says we are at, or above normal rain fall, it is still very important to pay close attention to the watering of your bonsai, especially with the frequent dry spells between our recent winter rain & snow storms. If one decides to leave the watering of their fine bonsai to Mother Nature, then don’t be surprised to find most, if not all, your bonsai trees in a state of neglect, and possibility all quite dead when you peek in on them come spring. Over the years, I have been witness to this very sad occurrence on several occasions. However, do not over-water, and be very careful to avoid root-rot. Also be reminded that even in the wettest of heavy downpours, protected areas under building eves and alike may necessitate additional watering. Be very careful to remove all fallen leaf litter and weeds from in and around your bonsai trees.

2 - Fertilizing - Mid February to late March is still a bit too early to consider applying any fertilizers to your still dormant bonsai, and do not apply fertilizers to recently repotted trees until at least one month after repotting. In April’s newsletter we will again re-publish an article on the simple, and quite basic, aspects of fertilizing your bonsai.

3 - Repotting - Finish up with your late winter repotting and root pruning into mid March, or the very first signs of warming spring weather.

4 - Pruning/Styling - As with most all trees in our area, drastic pruning is best accomplished mid January through mid March. You’re running out of time. Better hurry.... Remove any old wire that has completed its job or may be starting to cut into tender bark and limbs.

6 - The Sun - Rotate all trees at least once a month to insure even growth from all viewable angles of the tree, and too, so that they do not grow in just one direction, that is toward the sun’s rays only.

5 - Insect, disease and critter control - Maintain defensive treatmentsfor fungus.... Watch for and treat insect and scale infestations. Cage all fruit bearing trees to protect them from night raiding raccoons, rabbits, opossums, deer and alike.
