Volume
Rectangular Prisms and Cylinders
Rectangular Prism• The volume V of a rectangular prism is
the product of the length l, the width w, and the height h.
V = l(w)(h)• The volume of a three-dimensional figure is the measure of space it
occupies. • It is measured by cubic units– Ex: centimeters cubed (cm³) length
width
height
Example 1
• Find the volume of the rectangular prism.
5 cm4 cm
3 cmV = l(w)(h)V = 5(4)(3)V = 60 cm³
Cylinder
• The volume V of a cylinder is the area of the base times the height h.
V = (Area of the base)(height)• The base of a cylinder is a circle. • You will have to find the area of the
circle and multiply that by the height of the cylinder.
• It is measured by cubic units– Ex: centimeters cubed (cm³)
Example 2• Find the volume of the cylinder. Round your
answer to the nearest hundredth.
