Chaplain’s Message: The month of May has arrived with its natural beauty and all joyful activities waiting for us. It is great that we, with the help from the vaccine, can get out of the house to enjoy outdoor activities, to come together as family and community to celebrate important events like Mother’s Day, graduation, First Communion, Confirmation, etc.

In the tradition of the Catholic Church, May is also the month of Mary, our Heavenly Mother. I still remember, last year, when our church and all churches were still closed because of Covid, and parishioners had to attend Mass online, we had a beautiful gesture to our Heavenly Mother at all Sunday Masses. We put the statue of the Virgin Mary by the altar, and at the end of Mass, I invited

everyone to turn to Mary while the cantor was singing a Marian song, a child representing the whole parish presented Mary some flowers, and then we all knelt down and said a prayer to entrust our parish and our family to Mary. Last year when the pandemic started, I pondered how our parish could survive this storm. Here we are today, still hanging in there with our eyes looking forward to a brighter future. Yes, the Virgin Mary has truly protected and guided us through this pandemic. Let us come to Mary again. This month, I would like to invite the whole parish to recognize and appreciate one special ministry in our parish: the Landscape and Garden Ministry. Just look around and see, no parish around here has such beautiful gardens and trees like we have here at our church. By taking care of the gardens and memorial trees, these dedicated ministers help preserve not only the natural beauty for our parish but also the history and the sweet memories of many wonderful people who lived, served and died in this community of faith. We truly appreciate the dedication and service that these sisters and brothers have been pouring out for this parish for many years. On behalf of this community of faith, I want the say thanks to Jim Kelly for his leadership and dedication to this ministry for many years. Now, because of his health problem, Jim can no longer continue, but has passed the baton to Jim Spannagel who will lead this wonderful ministry. As we pray for Jim Kelly and for his health, we are grateful to Jim Spannagel for his “Yes.” However, this Landscape and Garden Ministry really needs your help. We need more volunteers who can come every or some Monday afternoons during warm weather to help take care of gardens and trees. If you can help, please sign up and be involved. The church really needs you. May the Lord continue to bless and protect you.

Grand Knights Message: Welcome Brother Knights, This month we would like to wish all the Mothers a wonderful Mother’s Day. We see what it takes to get projects and events completed

throughout the parish and community. Then we see it done in faith by the same family over a number of years. Therefore, St. Alphonsus Liguori Council is proud to introduce the FAMILY OF THE YEAR AWARD. It goes to the Maslanka Family –

Stanislaw and his wife Mary Therese and daughter Marianna. Stanislaw is an active charter member of the council. Together the family attends Mass at St. Al’s. Both Stanislaw and his wife have been sharing the Catholic life teachings with their daughter. Marianna is a proud 2017 alumni here at St Al’s School and now she is soon to graduate from High School from the Willows Academy in Des Plaines. How thankful the Parish and School are to the Family always giving back with their time and talent. Marianna designed and built the exterior Stations of The Cross that surround the church just before Covid hit last year. This was just one of her many projects as a member of the American Heritage Girls. Like her Mother and Father, she is always participating in Mass with her choir voice or being a greeter like her parents before Mass. The Maslanka Family inspires others to be involved by demonstrating the benefits of spiritual life in our Parish. This year, the KofC State Convention will be at the Westin Hotel & Convention Center in Lombard, IL. May 28-30. Our council will be represented by GK Bob and DGK Juan attending State Deputy’s Banquet, Training sessions and Program events. At last, the meeting rooms are OPEN for in person council meetings every 2nd Sunday of the Month at 6pm. Join us again. Stop by and say HI with Pizza and BYOB after the meeting. Let us remember Memorial Day Monday May 31 and pay respect with prayers and support to our Service Men and Women who paid the highest price for our country’s freedom. Thank You,

Grand Knight Bob McLoughlin

Field Agent Report:

Fellow Brother Knights,

I’m blessed to tell you that I’ve been assigned to support you and your

families as your Knights of Columbus Field Agent. Robert Adams as you

may know has been promoted to District Agent/Sales Specialist. I will be

here to continue Blessed Fr. Michael J. McGivney’s mission of protecting

his members and their families.

I have been a member of the Knights for 20 years, a Past Grand Knight in

Palatine, and a Field Agent for the past 10 Year.

It’s truly an exciting time to be part of the Knights of Columbus, we have a

rich history of 139 years since we were founded. In the past decade we

gave away over $1.6 Billion to Charitable causes and as an Insurance

company we continually receive the highest possible ranking in the

industry by Standard and Poor and AM Best. With over $26 Billion Dollars

and Assets we’re one of the largest insurance companies in North America!

I am proud to serve an organization that supports the mission of

protecting Catholic Families. I'm especially proud of our Founder the

Blessed Fr. Michael J. McGivney who worked tirelessly to bring this all

together. He is my inspiration to stay focused in helping my members and

their families. I continue to pray that our members take advantage of our

greatest Fraternal Benefit - The Insurance program.

In 2020 we witnessed another record-breaking year as an insurance

company, and we saw our founder Fr. McGivney come one step closer to

sainthood. Let us continue to pray and assist those in need as our Founder

would expect from us. Leave no neighbor behind!

May God continue to bless all of you for the good works you do for the

Council and the Parish. I look

forward to assisting you and

your families. Please don’t

hesitate to call me.

Fraternally Yours,

Pierre Zermatten-Field Agent

Know Your Faith Ascension of the Lord(May 16)

The feast of the Ascension of the Lord occurs exactly 40

days after Easter marks Christ’s physical ascension into

Heaven by His own powers. Tradition designates Mount

Olivet near Bethany as the place where Christ left the

Earth. The feast falls on a Thursday. It is one of the

ecumenical feasts ranking with the feasts of the Passion,

of Easter and of Pentecost among the most solemn in the

calendar, has a vigil and, since the fifteenth century, an

octave which is set apart for a novena of preparation for

Pentecost, in accordance with the directions of Pope Leo

XIII. The observance of this feast is of great antiquity. Although no documentary

evidence of it exists prior to the beginning of the fifth century, St. Augustine says that

it is of Apostolic origin, and he speaks of it in a way that shows it was the universal

observance of the Church long before his time.

Pentecost Sunday(May 23)

Pentecost, which is celebrated fifty days after

Easter Sunday, commemorates the descent of the

Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire upon the

Apostles, Mary, and other followers of Jesus

Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating

the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the

Apostles. Following the Crucifixion, the Apostles

were hiding in locked ones in fear. Jesus appeared

to them over a period of 40 days following Easter

before ascending into Heaven. At Pentecost, however, the Holy Spirit descended upon

them, filled the entire house in which they were staying, and they began to speak in

tongues so that everyone who heard them heard them in his own native language.

Pentecost represents the turning point of the Church, where it becomes fortified by the

Holy Spirit and boldly proclaims itself to the world instead of

hiding in fear for its lives.

Holy Trinity Sunday(May 30) The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is the first Sunday after

Pentecost in the Western Christian liturgical calendar.

Celebrating the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three

Persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Prior to

the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, it marked the end of

a three-week period when church weddings were forbidden. The

period began on Rogation Sunday, the fifth Sunday after Easter.

Trinity Sunday was established as a Double of the Second Class by Pope John XXII to

celebrate the Trinity.[12] It was raised to the dignity of a Double of the First Class by

Pope Pius X on 24 July 1911. During the Middle Ages, especially during the

Carolingian period, devotion to the Blessed Trinity was a highly important feature of

private devotion and inspired several liturgical expressions.
