Proposal to change the name of theAssociation

In December 2001, theAAANZ Council againunanimously endorsedthe broader strategic direction of theAssociation that was developed inDecember 2000. This directionrecognises the historical and continuingproductive links with the financediscipline and its rapidly expandinglinks with the information systemsdiscipline. The Council decided that itwas desirable to change the name of theAssociation to better align it with theAssociation's strategic direction.Accordingly, Council resolved toprovide members with the opportunityto indicate, by way of ballot, theirpreference between two possible newnames for the Association: Accountingand Finance Association of Australiaand New Zealand, and AccountingFinance and Information SystemsAssociation of Australia and NewZealand. Members also had theopportunity to express preferences forother names including ‘no change’.

The Council is grateful for theconsiderable feedback from membersconcerning the proposal and will beconsidering the valuable feedback in its July meeting. We will keep youinformed of any developments.

2002 Conference Update

We would like to update you on someof the features of the 2002 annualconference, which will be held at theSheraton Perth Hotel, Perth, WesternAustralia, on 7-9 July 2002.

One of the aims of the Association is to promote a quality accountingeducation. Consistent with this aim,in this year’s conference, we are havingsessions dedicated to dealing withvarious issues in accounting education.

The 2002 conference has a lot to offer.The new education sessions, CPEsessions, plenary speakers, concurrentsessions, poster sessions and the usualcomplement of social activities willmake the conference stimulating,rewarding, and enjoyable.

In the next newsletter, we will behighlighting the CPE sessions andsocial activities. However, don’t wait –it is time to start making your travelplans now.

Annual General MeetingIn accordance with the requirements of the Corporations Law we arerequired to hold our Annual GeneralMeeting within five months of the endof the financial year. Atthe meeting, the audited financialaccounts will be presented to members,and the outcome of the election ofCouncil will be announced.

AAANZ/CPA Australia researchprojectYou will recall that AAANZ inpartnership with CPA Australiacommissioned Stride Consulting toundertake a report into “The future ofaccounting as an academic professionin Australia”. The report will befinalised by the end of March for arelease date to members early April.

Election of Directors to the AAANZ CouncilThere is one vacancy on the Council for the position currently occupied byAssociate Professor Malcolm Miller.You will have received a notice andnomination by mail. Where more thanone nomination is received AAANZ willconduct a postal ballot of members.

Editor of the JournalWe would like to thank ProfessorMargaret Abernethy for hercontribution to the Association as theEditor of Accounting and Financefor the last three years. We also thankJennifer Grafton and Kate Hill for theireditorial support as editorial assistant

and copy editor, respectively.

We welcome Professor Robert Faff asthe new Editor of the Journal, and wewish him a successful term.

And in Conclusion...We would like to congratulate Effie for completing 10 years with theAssociation. In its meeting inDecember, the Council hasacknowledged and commended Effie onher continuing valuable contribution tothe Association.

At present the 2001 financialstatements are being finalised andaudited. The draft unaudited accountssuggest that the Association will incur asmall deficit. Relative to 2000, theAssociation benefited from a goodattendance at the annual conference inNew Zealand, which returned asatisfactory financial surplus. Giventhat each year’s financial results aresubject to variation depending upon thesuccess of the conference, Council hasformed a sub-committee to review thefunding arrangements of theAssociation. This group is currentlydeveloping and reviewingrecommendations for alternativefunding plans with the goal of growingthe financial base of the Association. Anumber of exciting initiatives are beingexplored which we hope will not onlymaintain the financial strength of theAssociation but allow it to offer newmember benefits.

The funding sub-committee is workingto have these initiatives well establishedover the next few months.

AAANZ continues to enjoy strongsupport from the Australian and NewZealand professional bodies and wethank them for their assistance.

Thank you for taking the time to readthis, my first report as Editor ofAccounting and Finance. There are just a few things that I wanted to say atthis very early stage in my tenure. First,let me take this opportunity to thankMargaret Abernathy for her fine effortsduring her term as Editor. At times itcan be a thankless task, with difficultiesand challenges that cannot be fullyappreciated unless you are the one inthe ‘hotseat’. Second, thanks to herAssociate Editorial team – DonaldStokes and Bruce Grundy - yourcontributions to AAANZ are alsogreatly appreciated.

Third, let me introduce you to myAssociate Editorial team:

Welcome to the first edition of theAAANZ Newsletter for 2002.

The year ahead for AAANZ is lookingvery positive. We look forward toinforming you of some new initiativesin the months ahead so stay tuned.

Members will be aware that changes tothe Australian privacy laws came intoeffect from 21 December 2001.

The Association undertook a PrivacyPolicy tool analysis to determinewhether AAANZ needed to registerunder the Privacy Act. The outcome of the analysis was that, as a smallbusiness with an annual turnover of less than $3 million, the Associationwas not required to register under thePrivacy Act.

The ‘Membership Privacy Statement’forwarded with the 2002 annualmembership subscription notices listedwhat purposes your information will beused for. Please be assured that yourinformation will remain confidential toAAANZ on the basis outlined in thatpolicy.

If you have not completed yourmembership renewal notice and privacystatement, please do so as soon aspractical and return to the AAANZSecretariat.

2002 is going to be a great year. Welook forward to sharing it with you.

Effie Margiolis Practical experience requirementsfor academic staffThe Institute’s Practical ExperienceCommittee has signed off on a LogBook supplement, which lays out the competencies that must bedemonstrated by accounting academicstaff to satisfy the practical experiencerequirements for entry to the CACollege. The supplement is anadaptation of the original Log Bookwritten for practitioners.

initiatives are likely to result from thesevisits aimed at attracting more studentsinto the profession. New Zealand iscurrently experiencing a shortage ofprofessional accountants and effortsneed to be made to ensure an adequatesupply to the profession in the future.

Relationship and interactionbetween academics andpractitionersA new project has been launched toexplore ways in which the relationshipbetween the accounting academic andpractitioner communities can beenhanced. A range of actual and possibleinteractions that mutually enrich bothcommunities has been identified.

Alternative academic entry routesfor Accounting TechniciansThe academic study requirements forAccounting Technicians are usuallysatisfied through completing a NewZealand Diploma in Business.Equivalent study (or higher) has alwaysbeen considered as an alternative.However, in October last year, theAdmissions Board formally approved aspecific degree-level study package forentry to the College of AccountingTechnicians. Formalising degree-levelstudy requirements creates morecertainty for students and allows theInstitute to better promote the ATCollege to degree-level students who donot intend to follow through to CACollege membership.

Statements of learning outcomesThe Institute has completed its projectto draw up ‘Statements of LearningOutcomes’ (SLOs) for all requiredacademic study topic areas. The SLOsprovide guidelines for tertiary educationinstitutions approved by the Institute

to deliver the academic component forthe CA qualification. The tertiaries aregiven flexibility to configure theircourses how they wish, subject tosatisfying the learning outcomes.

Reciprocity agreements

New reciprocity arrangements, relatingto members of the Institute’s College ofChartered Accountants (CA), wereconfirmed in 2001 with the Institute ofChartered Accountants in Australia, theInstitute of Chartered Accountants inEngland & Wales, the Institute ofChartered Accountants of Ireland, andthe Institute of Chartered Accountantsof Scotland.

Theme: "Curriculum Design for theNew Profession"

Papers and presentation of workshopsessions are invited for participation ina one-day symposium to precede theAnnual Conference of the AccountingAssociation of Australia and NewZealand (AAANZ) to be held in Perth,Western Australia.

The symposium will feature workshoppresentations and also forum sessionsto explore aspects of designing newaccounting curricula in response to theneeds of the new profession.

Possible topics include:

❖ gaining support in curriculum change;

❖ compulsory and optional topics in a first-year accounting course;

❖ the role of publishing houses inproviding quality ancillary materialsfor classroom use;

❖ the value of course managementsoftware such as WebCT,Blackboard, etc;

❖ the function of the professionalbodies and practitioners inaccounting education;

❖ the benefits of inquiry learningmethods in obtaining key skill andknowledge areas eg. collaborativelearning, role-plays, investigativeresearch reports.

Thank you for taking the time to readthis, my first report as Editor ofAccounting and Finance. There are just a few things that I wanted to say atthis very early stage in my tenure. First,let me take this opportunity to thankMargaret Abernathy for her fine effortsduring her term as Editor. At times itcan be a thankless task, with difficultiesand challenges that cannot be fullyappreciated unless you are the one inthe ‘hotseat’. Second, thanks to herAssociate Editorial team – DonaldStokes and Bruce Grundy - yourcontributions to AAANZ are alsogreatly appreciated.

Third, let me introduce you to myAssociate Editorial team:

Fifth, let me impress upon you theimportant role many of you will beasked to fulfill at various times in thefuture as referee on papers submitted tothe journal. As the saying goes, please"do unto others as you would wishthem to do unto you" and avoid thesilent killer – ‘academic schizophrenia’.And please don’t ever give me cause tothink of you as the weakest link!

Finally, it should not need to be statedBUT, I strongly urge all of you tosubmit your best research work toAccounting and Finance and stronglysupport this most important activity ofAAANZ.

Welcome to the first edition of theAAANZ Newsletter for 2002.

The year ahead for AAANZ is lookingvery positive. We look forward toinforming you of some new initiativesin the months ahead so stay tuned.

Members will be aware that changes tothe Australian privacy laws came intoeffect from 21 December 2001.

The Association undertook a PrivacyPolicy tool analysis to determinewhether AAANZ needed to registerunder the Privacy Act. The outcome of the analysis was that, as a smallbusiness with an annual turnover of less than $3 million, the Associationwas not required to register under thePrivacy Act.

The ‘Membership Privacy Statement’forwarded with the 2002 annualmembership subscription notices listedwhat purposes your information will beused for. Please be assured that yourinformation will remain confidential toAAANZ on the basis outlined in thatpolicy.

If you have not completed yourmembership renewal notice and privacystatement, please do so as soon aspractical and return to the AAANZSecretariat.

2002 is going to be a great year. Welook forward to sharing it with you.

Effie Margiolis Practical experience requirementsfor academic staffThe Institute’s Practical ExperienceCommittee has signed off on a LogBook supplement, which lays out the competencies that must bedemonstrated by accounting academicstaff to satisfy the practical experiencerequirements for entry to the CACollege. The supplement is anadaptation of the original Log Bookwritten for practitioners.

Annual General MeetingIn accordance with the requirements of the Corporations Law we arerequired to hold our Annual GeneralMeeting within five months of the endof the financial year. Accordingly, theAGM will be held on 22 May 2002 at avenue to be advised. All members willreceive formal notification in April. Atthe meeting, the audited financialaccounts will be presented to members,and the outcome of the election ofCouncil will be announced.

Please note that, we will continue tohold a Meeting of Members as part ofthe AAANZ Annual Conference.

AAANZ/CPA Australia researchprojectYou will recall that AAANZ inpartnership with CPA Australiacommissioned Stride Consulting toundertake a report into “The future ofaccounting as an academic professionin Australia”. The report will befinalised by the end of March for arelease date to members early April.

Election of Directors to the AAANZ CouncilThere is one vacancy on the Council for the position currently occupied byAssociate Professor Malcolm Miller.You will have received a notice andnomination by mail. Where more thanone nomination is received AAANZ willconduct a postal ballot of members.

Editor of the JournalWe would like to thank ProfessorMargaret Abernethy for hercontribution to the Association as theEditor of Accounting and Financefor the last three years. We also thankJennifer Grafton and Kate Hill for theireditorial support as editorial assistant

and copy editor, respectively.

We welcome Professor Robert Faff asthe new Editor of the Journal, and wewish him a successful term.

And in Conclusion...We would like to congratulate Effie for completing 10 years with theAssociation. In its meeting inDecember, the Council hasacknowledged and commended Effie onher continuing valuable contribution tothe Association.

At present the 2001 financialstatements are being finalised andaudited. The draft unaudited accountssuggest that the Association will incur asmall deficit. Relative to 2000, theAssociation benefited from a goodattendance at the annual conference inNew Zealand, which returned asatisfactory financial surplus. Giventhat each year’s financial results aresubject to variation depending upon thesuccess of the conference, Council hasformed a sub-committee to review thefunding arrangements of theAssociation. This group is currentlydeveloping and reviewingrecommendations for alternativefunding plans with the goal of growingthe financial base of the Association. Anumber of exciting initiatives are beingexplored which we hope will not onlymaintain the financial strength of theAssociation but allow it to offer newmember benefits.

The funding sub-committee is workingto have these initiatives well establishedover the next few months.

AAANZ continues to enjoy strongsupport from the Australian and NewZealand professional bodies and wethank them for their assistance.

of the Education Directors of CPA Australia, the ICAA and ICANZ, and representatives of AAANZ will judge

Presidents’ MessageBest Wishes to all ourmembers for the NewYear. Many of you areback at work and wewish you a successfuland productive year.

Proposal to change the name of theAssociation

In December 2001, theAAANZ Council againunanimously endorsedthe broader strategic direction of theAssociation that was developed inDecember 2000. This directionrecognises the historical and continuingproductive links with the financediscipline and its rapidly expandinglinks with the information systemsdiscipline. The Council decided that itwas desirable to change the name of theAssociation to better align it with theAssociation's strategic direction.Accordingly, Council resolved toprovide members with the opportunityto indicate, by way of ballot, theirpreference between two possible newnames for the Association: Accountingand Finance Association of Australiaand New Zealand, and AccountingFinance and Information SystemsAssociation of Australia and NewZealand. Members also had theopportunity to express preferences forother names including ‘no change’.

The Council is grateful for theconsiderable feedback from membersconcerning the proposal and will beconsidering the valuable feedback in its July meeting. We will keep youinformed of any developments.

2002 Conference Update

We would like to update you on someof the features of the 2002 annualconference, which will be held at theSheraton Perth Hotel, Perth, WesternAustralia, on 7-9 July 2002.

One of the aims of the Association is to promote a quality accountingeducation. Consistent with this aim,in this year’s conference, we are havingsessions dedicated to dealing withvarious issues in accounting education.

The 2002 conference has a lot to offer.The new education sessions, CPEsessions, plenary speakers, concurrentsessions, poster sessions and the usualcomplement of social activities willmake the conference stimulating,rewarding, and enjoyable.

In the next newsletter, we will behighlighting the CPE sessions andsocial activities. However, don’t wait –it is time to start making your travelplans now.
