Celebrating Family Since 1932

January 2016

Hey Family!!!

It’s been a few months since Almighty God blessed all of us to come together at our wonderful family reunion. I know that our sacred ancestors were thrilled that we are maintaining a tradition started 83 years ago.

The many comments from many of you let me know that eve-ryone enjoyed the three exciting days in a year when we took

new roads and yet maintained a taste of the past: 1. We initiated a fun filled and historic out-door FRIDAY event where we invited you to “Comeback for the Throwback”. At this event we reminisced on back in the day when the elders brought home cooked dishes, enjoyed barrels of Brunswick stew and lemonade and placed a historical marker com-

memorating the monumental achievements of our ances-tor, HENRY WILSON.

2. We then had our first annual Royal Gala at Goels Plaza with a live band, music and dancing, good food and prizes. Oh what a night!!

3. Then on Sunday we had our traditional family dinner at Webb School.

All of this occurred thanks to the hard work and unified effort of our reunion executive committee—Pam, Danielle, Cynthia, Sandra, Terrance, Brian, Bradley, Dawn. Special kudos to Carl Webb who fried the fish and made that delectable Brunswick stew! Whew!! My! My! My!

Well, it’s that time again and I am already excited!!! We met with some of our family members on Saturday, November 14th to roll out some of our plans for Wilson Reunion 2016.

At the top of our agenda was to share the fact that we have identified a new headquarter hotel for our Reunion 2016—the fabulous Embassy Suites Hotel!!! We chose this hotel for sever-al reasons: #1. The Embassy Hotel is da bomb!!! The Embassy is simply fabulous!!

#2. FREE Breakfast!! They specialize in cooked to order omelettes as well as other traditional breakfast items. #3. There are other eating venues in the vestibule area including: -The breakfast nook -Short order cook area that serves burgers, etc. -A salad and juice bar -Two free drinks for all patrons at the bar (of course no Wilson members drink—ha-ha-ha)!! #4. Room rates are comparable to the Doubletree $124 King room; $144 Queen room. #5. Embassy ballroom allows us to have our gala right at the hotel without travelling a winding, circuitous route. #6. All family members will be able to enjoy the gala with- out having to prepare and serve food. The hotel will provide all food for the buffet at the gala. #7. Three miles from the airport and SHOPPING GALORE!! Just minutes from Brier Creek Commons!

Some have asked how we did so much last year with such a small registration fee. To maintain our high level of excellence we must nominally raise our registration fees. Our fees for 2016 are:

Early Bird Registration: $35 adults, $10 children Regular Registration: $40 adults, $15 children Gala Registration: $30 adults, $20 children

FRONT BACK

Our family faced a string of stroke related incidents during the past year. A stroke can strike in-stantly and can leave detrimental effects that can change a person’s life forever. The key factor is recognizing the signs of a stroke and seeking care immediately with greater chances of recovery. The signs of a stroke are sudden weakness and numbness in the face, arms or legs specifically on one side of the body; trouble talking and trouble walking; loss of vision; or a sudden headache.

Strokes have been identified as the disease noted as the silent killer. Based upon The American Stroke Associa-tion and studies shown of all populations African Americans are at a higher risk of having a stroke. They typically range with adults ages 55 years of age and old-er. In addition, women are more likely to die from a stroke than men, although they are more common in men.

What exactly is a stroke? Strokes are caused by blocked blood vessels or bleeding in the brain. What do you do if you or someone could possibly be having a stroke? Act “FAST” this acronym means Face, Arm, Speech and Time.

F - Does the person’s face look uneven? A - Is their arm hanging loosely? S - Is there a change in the individual’s speech? Slurred or troubled speaking T - Its time to call 911 NOW.

We must take the necessary preventative measures to decline our risk for strokes. Some lifestyle changes that you can began to help would be annual checkups, check blood pressure regularly, exercise at least 3 days a week, reduce salt intake, use supplements or other flavorful spices, eat a heart healthy diet and stop smoking.

One of the most severe strokes suffered last year was by Mary Wilson the wife of President Willie Wilson. She suffered the worst of strokes called hemorrhagic stroke. Due to the speedy response, unwavering love, faith, prayers and with the Grace of God she has made a miraculous recovery. She has truly been blessed and several months ago preached her first sermon in over a year. Also, Selma Wilson and her daughter Audrey Taylor of Richmond, Virginia experienced strokes this year as well and are continuously improving daily.

For any other family members that have experienced a stroke please let us know.

After reading this I want you to remember the acronym “FAST” and I hope that this segment em-powers you to take control of your health in 2016.
