ELU V’ELURabbi Gary Glickstein
I have always tried to learn lessons from accomplishedindividuals and integrate them into my life and work. As Isaid during these past High Holy Days, John Wooden, thelegendary coach of the UCLA men’s basketball team, taught me when to retire. He said: “It’s time ... I did my best… any time you can walk away saying you did your best, you’ve won.”
He also added: “Th-Th-that’s all folks.” That is the part of hisretirement that does not apply to me.
Ever since the announcement of my retirement from theposition of Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Sholom, I havebeen asked repeatedly three questions:
1. Why?2. When?3. The third question is, in the words of Marilyn and AlanBergman and Michel Legrand (and sung by Frank Sinatra):“What are you doing the rest of your life, north and southand east and west of your life?”
Let me try to answer these three questions and one bonusquestion as best I can:
Why?
My heart and mind (coupled with my aging body) tell me itis time. I was asked to become your rabbi at 37 years ofage. I was young, energetic, in tune with the times, clear inmy vision, and enthusiastic to take on any and allchallenges – and there were many. Today I am consciousevery day of the challenges of memory loss, lack ofbalance, tiredness, and other limitations which impede myability to serve our congregation in the ways you deserve tobe served. I am proud of what we have accomplishedtogether over the last 33 years. It is time.
When?
May 31, 2018, will be my last official day as Senior Rabbi.June 1, 2018, is my first official day as Rabbi Emeritus.
(Bonus question) What is a Rabbi Emeritus?
The title is an honorific bestowed upon me by our TempleBoard to signify that I have served you honorably and well. The title also continues to connect me to Temple BethSholom. In my new role, I will support Rabbi Pomerantz inher new role as Senior Rabbi and follow her lead as sheguides our congregation into the future.
What will you do with the rest of your life?
In my career, I have seen so many whose lives were cutshort. In the Psalms it is written, “The years of a person’s lifeare 70 or by virtue of strength 80.” I have been blessed toreach 70 years and hope to achieve the 80 number. However, none of us know about the next minute, let alonetomorrow. Our Board has gifted me with a sabbatical for theperiod of June 1, 2018, through December 1, 2019. Joanieand I are presently deciding on our hopes and dreams forthat sabbatical time. If God wills it, we will take thatsabbatical and return to South Florida afterward andreconnect with our congregation and community here. Inmy next Elu for April, I plan to share additional details withyou. Stay tuned. More to follow.
As my Grams liked to proclaim: “It’s all for the best.” And Iwill add: “Th-Th-that’s NOT all folks.”

Dear Families,
Within the hallways and walls of our Temple BethSholom Innovative School (TBSIS), we embrace our needto understand one another to really succeed in life. Weeach see ourselves as parts of our larger caring system, working together toward building our communityperspectives where we are learning how to live together. We hold our academic learning goals to high standards, but we see our human learning qualities as equallyimportant in achieving our life goals. This is punctuatedin our KEHILLA APPROACH™, where we work every dayto build kindness, empathy, honesty, integrity, life-longlearning, and acceptance.
In October of 2017, a group of our TBSIS professionals, along with two of our parents, studied at Opal School inPortland, Oregon. Opal School, a Reggio Emilia-inspiredearly childhood and elementary school dedicated tochange-making, is a member of the international networkof Ashoka Changemaker Schools. This network ofelementary, middle, and high schools focuses onbuilding empathy, teamwork, leadership,problem-solving, and change-making as studentoutcomes. We will be taking another group of TBSISprofessionals to Opal School this month to continue ourstudies around our practices inspired by the ReggioEmilia Approach and how this connects to making ourworld a better place.
In “Teaching the New Literacy,” an article written byAshoka’s Global Chair for Framework Change Henry F.De Sio, change-making and empathy are finding theirplace alongside reading and math within the corecompetencies for student achievement. Majorbroadcasting networks have covered the importance ofbuilding empathy and growing change agents to meetthe needs of our fast-paced world beyond our cookie-cutter model of factory workers and industrialapproaches. We are living in an age of empowermentwhere technology has equalized our ability for activeparticipation and innovation once only available to aselect group.
With this empowerment comes the daunting responsibility tomove our actions beyond the old-world thinking, whererepetition was at the core, toward embracing uncertainty andchange as values that guide us toward growing a sustainablefuture. Mr. De Sio further stated that this paradigm shift in ourthinking is as “dramatic as shifting from a flat world to around one. Once you understand this fact, you see theimperative for a new roadmap and a new framework tomatch the new landscape.” He highlights that we need anopen system where collaboration and teamwork are at thecore of development, leadership, and decision-making. Skillsbased on empathy and cognitive empathy are necessary forthese kinds of change-making approaches.
We feel this within our TBSIS mission. We are activelygrowing learners who value cooperation, collaboration, andinterdependence as goals instead of competition andindividual achievement. We intentionally build real-lifeexperiences for our learners to develop these essentialcompetencies. What we are seeing is that together we arebetter. The synergistic effect of all the parts working togetheris creating a greater whole! Within this community mindset,we are succeeding in achieving our personal goals, too, because these goals are inextricably woven into the fabric ofour community-building processes.

They also enjoy activities likehiking in the mountains, water play, zip-lining, arts and crafts, and other sports and team-building activities. Camp Jennyis held at URJ Camp Coleman every Memorial Day weekend.
The Temple Beth Sholom Confirmation Class will travel to Washington, D.C., March 16–19 to train at the Religious ActionCenter's L'Taken Leadership Summit. Twenty-five of our teens will be attending with over 150 from around the country.

March, and the spring equinox, is my favorite time of year. I’m sure it has a lotto do with being raised in New York where I anticipated warm days ahead. And perhaps a bit to do with being born in Iran, where the spring equinoxmarks a new year. As a child, I remember it was the month we all gathered towatch Yul Brynner in “The Ten Commandments” on TV, and my parentswould work diligently for weeks to clean the house and boil pots and sheets inanticipation of Passover. While I love Passover, I’m not such a fan of thePassover cleaning. Cleaning out chameitz crumbs from under the fridge andstove can make anyone want to run away on vacation!
Over the years, I have learned this type of deep cleaning serves a veryrewarding purpose. Getting down on the ground, looking for crumbs, ishumbling and spiritually grounding. This holiday teaches us to get rid ofanything inflated; most importantly our egos. Passover teaches usself-discipline, as we abstain from a week of empty carbs. In our family, wealways make it a time for tzedakah and teaching gratitude.
Gratitude is all about understanding our position in the world and our goodfortune in relation to many others. When you do something as simpleas empty your cupboards of pasta boxes, crackers and bread and give it tothose in need, you teach a sense of abundance and gratitude. Instead oftalking about it, this is an opportunity to show our children how lucky we areto have so much that we can give.
If you can, have the whole family pitch in with the purge. They may whine atfirst, but there lies a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that isliberating when you are done. This is, after all, the festival celebrating freedom;freedom from our egos as well as anything else that enslaves us. So, take yourtime, don’t just rush and throw everything in a junk drawer. To assist us in ourpreparation, Sisters in the ‘Hood is hosting an exciting, educational Passoverclean-up seminar. Our member Sarah, owner of “Less is More OrganizingServices,” will graciously reveal her secrets to organizing our homes.
Look for future communications regarding details and registration informationon our website at tbsmb.org/sisters.

Jews in CanoesThe Tribe Creates a Meaningful Eco-Spiritual Experience
This past Tu B'Shevat, the Tribe enjoyed our 3rd annualJews in Canoes trip north to Oleta River State Park, wherewe kayaked, enjoyed foods that grow on trees, celebratedwith plentiful wine and tree-birthday shots, andappreciated nature for the New Year of The Trees.
This Jews in Canoes was our most special yet. What setthis apart from all other Jews in Canoes to date was eachparticipant’s sharing, at the onset of our Tu B’ShevatSeder, what they were "planting and growing" forthemselves, metaphorically, this year. Every singleparticipant meaningfully shared their intentions for thecoming year in a way that allowed The Tribe to shine as aspiritual, lay-led Jewish community of Jewish youngprofessionals in addition to its already strong reputation
as a producer of outstanding nightlife and an avenue forworthy, consistent volunteer opportunities for Jewishyoung professionals here in Miami.
Thank you to all of our Tribesters who gathered with us tomake this celebration of Tu B'Shevat a truly memorableone! A very special thank you to Tribe Board Member andJews in Canoes Event Chair David Brownstein forcreating this event with me.

This will be an evening to remember and a special way to express our appreciation for this extraordinary couple.

Rabbi Glickstein wrote, “I am the Rabbi I am because of the mensch who is my wife, Joanie. Last month's Shalom Rav Gala will stay with us always. Aside from theglowing tributes by members of our community, Temple Beth Sholom clergyand leadership, and our children, the overwhelming sense of love andcelebration made it an unforgettable evening.

The film centers on a military tribunal led by Chief Trial Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy), before which four German judges and prosecutors (as compared to 16 defendants in the actual Judges' Trial) stand accused of crimes against humanity for their involvement in atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. The film deals with non-combatant war crimes against a civilian population, the Holocaust, and the post-World War II geopolitical complexity of the actual Nuremberg Trials.
