EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
Dear Members of BPOE 1698,
It is with great anticipation and excitement I write this inaugural message. Please know I am
committed to this lodge and its success in the upcoming year.
First, I would like to thank PER Cliff Van Nest for his work and dedication over the past year.
We appreciate all you did and look forward to your continued service on our Board of Directors.
“Congratulations” to Dawn Tortoriello, our new District Vice President elect. Thanks to Mike Travis-
ano for your years of service and congrats to our newly installed officers. Thanks to my wife, Caro-
lyn, for all the work you have yet to do! I would like to thank all who attended and supported the
installation. From the looks of everyone there, I believe it was a success. Thanks to Johnny Unda
and his crew for the dinner. “You outdid yourself, Buddy.”
There has been a great buzz of excitement in our lodge and grill room with members offering
ideas for upcoming events, fundraisers, and lodge activities. I appreciate your enthusiasm and wel-
come your input and involvement. Let’s continue it throughout the year. Remember, this is “Our
Lodge.” Let’s make it the best it can be.
Fraternally yours,
Tom

Chris Resotko
Upon joining our lodge last year, Chris immediately became involved, first serving as an officer and most recent as our banquet manager. With bookings up, he has already proven his importance. Our youngest member displayed wisdom beyond his years in a letter written by him that was read at our last lodge meeting. Thank you, Chris, for reminding us of the true spirit of Elkdom. Chris can always be found helping out at the lodge, whether it be a party, an event, or in the kitchen. I am proud to call Chris a fellow Elk and look forward to his future leadership and involvement in Our Lodge. Just a reminder, Chris, “stay away from the Machine.” Congratulations on being our April Elk of the Month!

Organ & Tissue Donation Program
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA has joined forces with Donate Life America to increase donations of organs, eyes, and life-saving tissue. The need is paramount. More than 110,000 patients were waiting for organ transplants as of March 2011, according to the Donate Life America website, www.donatelife.net. Only 28,663 organ transplants had been performed in 2010, and even fewer—14,502 organ donations had been made in that year. We Elks Members can help close the gap! For more information on the impor-tance of donation and how to become a registered donor in your state, go to the Do-nate Life website. This is a great way to show that “Elks Give from the Heart.”
Pay your dues on-line.

RESPONSIBLE SERVICE/USE OF ALCOHOL
By Grand Lodge Insurance Department A recent verdict totaling $28 million (including $10 million in punitive damages) was rendered against a local Lodge. It was alleged that a non-Elks member was improperly served alcohol while attending an Elks sponsored function that was open to the public. This verdict has created a significant financial burden on the Master Liability Program which provides insurance for local Lodges. But, more important, it has presented a negative image for the order. All Elk Members have a duty to be aware of the need to be responsible for the service and use of alcohol as it pertains to themselves and the service provided their Lodge. All those responsible for the service of alcohol should be made aware of the fact that no person approaching intoxication should ever be served and anyone who violates this policy could be dismissed. The Master Liability Program was created to give local Lodges the ability to operate bar facilities that serve Lodge Members and their Guests. Lodges should not serve alcohol to either the public or non-Elks not accompanied by a Lodge Member. Each and every Elks Member should demonstrate awareness of this situation— and how it affects him/her on both a personal and fraternal basis—by ensuring their Lodge is operating responsibly and raising concerns when issues are brought to light.
Commentary by Cus Dalik PDDGER:
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This can happen at any Lodge! Why should it happen? Someone or everyone let their guard down. This will be felt
around the Order if the Master Liability Program becomes a thing of the past. Lodges will be made to provide their
own Liability Coverage. We must follow the State and Local Laws and the Laws of the Order. I was asked by the
Grand Lodge to publish this article in our Antler.

Veterans Committee
By Nancy DeVito Congratulations to the officers of the coming year 2014/2015! I’m sure we will all continue to work together for the good of the Order and will have much success in the new year. Thank you, Cliff, and your slate of officers for a great year!
On March 8, I had the honor of attending a friend’s retirement ceremony, Col. Jon Spare, at Joint Base McGuire. Thank you for your thirty years of service to our great country. You will be truly missed. God Bless You and your lovely family with your future endeav-ors.
Burnt Tavern Manor has invited the Veterans Committee to a Volunteer Brunch on April 11. It’s nice to know that we are appreciated for all our good deeds. Mark your calendars now for the Veterans Dinner Dance on October 18, 2014. I’m giving everyone a very ad-vanced notice. Our first military picnic at Joint Base will be Friday, June 13. My professional grillers are all ready to fire up the grills! Another date to mark on your calendars is June 21, 2014. It is the date for the SED Mash picnic being held in Sea Girt. Food, beer, wine, and The Mango Brothers! See Nancy for tickets, $15.00. Start time is 12:00 p.m. Pavers are available. See Mike Travisano, if you wish to purchase one or two. Care Packages —we must not forget our men and women serving.
