The Board members, led by President Manuel Moreno, were all duly impressed, as was General Manager, Ed Pattison. “We will find a very prominent location for all to see it,” Pattison stated.

feasibility study by June 2019, with the hope of beginning construction of the system as immediately thereafter as possible. This mandate has broad-based, bipartisan support. Co-Sponsored by Assembly Member Catherine Baker, a Republican representing the 16th District in the East Bay, Eggman pointed out the value in reaching across the aisle to

work together, regardless of party affiliation. “We all need to work together to find common ground,” she said.Eggman touched on the many areas of focus she has developed for herself, and her legislation. Youth issues are at the heart of much of her focus. She began by stating that she is working to establish a California University within our

area. There are no public universities within our 50 mile radius, she said.Ms. Talamantes Eggman, who holds a PhD in Social Work, served as a profes-sor at Sac State for more than a decade. She is also a licensed therapist, and served as a Medic in the U.S. Army. She started The Young Legislators Program in 2015 which, according to

her web site, “is inspired by Assembly-member Susan Talamantes Eggman’s belief that it is her responsibility as an elected official to develop the next generation of leaders”.To say she is an active member of the state assembly doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the work she does. She is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Accountability and Administrative Review, and serves on the committees on Appropriations, Business and Professions, Natural Resources, and Utilities and Energy. Her site states that “Susan previously served as chair of the California LGBT Caucus, the Assembly Agriculture Committee and the Assembly Local Government Committee.”As the Chair of the Women’s Caucus, she addressed the issue of equality, with a glaring observation. “Just 23% of the (California) Legislature is comprised of women,” she stated, while more than 50% of the people living here are female. And, women are still only paid 71¢ to every dollar men receive. She passed legislation, that Governor Brown signed, she noted, that states the “Employers can no longer ask what you made at your last job”, pointing out that single mothers who are not paid comparably to their male counterparts then have difficulty feeding their families, paying their bills, and living at a comparable standard. When employers are allowed to base a pay grade on what anyone, male or female, made previous to the new job in question, workers lose.Ms. Eggman also shared a bit on the mili-tary-style residential program she has partnered on with Congressman Gerry McNerney and

Brigadier General James L. Gabrielli. De-signed to help at-risk teens receive a quality education stayed on track with the announce-ment of a lease agreement between the U.S. Army and the California National Guard that will bring the Youth ChalleNGe Program to the Sharpe Army Depot in Lathrop. Assem-bly-member Eggman stated that some 400 kids have turned their lives around with the strict commitment and requirements of this program. She summed-up this particular cause with a simple explanation. “We are human beings who need that human connection.”And, she made note of the latest news of the day, that the California economy has surpassed Great Britain to become the 5th largest econ-omy in the world, adding that We carry a lot of clout.Members of The Rotary Club of Mountain House were very receptive to Ms. Eggman, and appreciative of her taking the time to share so much with the group. She was not campaign-ing, but did bring a handful of yard signs for any who wanted them. The next scheduled Rotary meeting is Friday, June 8, 2018. Confirmed guest speaker is Ms. Veronica Vargas, a major driving force for the creation of the commuter connector train Ms. Eggman has helped make possible by way of her legislation. Ms. Vargas, who serves as Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Tracy, is also Vice Chair of the Tri-Valley/San Joaquin Valley Regional Rail Authority. She plans to share the latest on progress on that initiative. All are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at the CSD Board Room beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Q: Why should I pick up pet waste (even if it’s on my own property)?A: The pathogens in pet waste are harmful to the health of humans, animals, and the environment. PUBLIC PROPERTY: Local animal control ordinances declare it is unlawful to leave pet waste on public property and require its immediate removal. PRIVATE PROPERTY: Local water quality and health ordinances also apply to private property and could result in enforcement, including fines, if it can be determined that pet waste, or its pathogens, on your property are being washed into storm drains or waterways, or if the accumulation of waste is a nuisance or menace to health.

Q: How should I dispose of pet waste?A: Scoop the pet waste, bag it, and put it in the trash (garbage).

Q: Can I put pet waste in the trash (garbage)?A: Yes, this is the preferred disposal method. By putting pet waste in the trash, it prevents the waste from becoming a source of pollution in our streams and bays. Landfills are designed to safely handle sub-stances such as dog waste, cat litter, and dirty diapers. Many people already place their dog waste in the trash because it’s convenient. Some hide it in the trashcan because they think it’s prohibited. Don’t worry! It’s allowed. If you are already placing it in the trash, keep up the good work!

Q: Can I bury or compost pet waste?A: Composting and burial do not kill hazardous pathogens that may be in the waste and can pollute water. Landfills are designed to safely

handle substances such as dog waste, cat litter, and dirty diapers. Yards are not. Most home compost piles don’t reach temperatures sufficient to kill many hazardous pathogens. Extended exposure at 140-degree temperatures is required to kill E. coli and Salmonella. Giardia can survive temperature extremes, chlorination, and drying. Cryptosporidium, Leptospira, Salmonella, and E. coli can survive for months in feces or soil. Roundworms can survive for four years in soil. Even commercial yard waste processors do not currently compost waste at temperatures sufficient to kill many pathogens in pet waste, so don’t put dog waste in the yard waste bins for curbside pickup.

Q: Can I flush pet waste down the toilet?A: Maybe. If you are on a municipal sewer system and you can stand the yuck-factor, flushing is a highly desirable method of disposal. Most people, especially those with large or multiple dogs, are not comfortable with the notion of bringing outdoor pet waste indoors to flush it. If you can handle it, go wild! If you have a septic system, then do not flush pet waste down the toilet. Flushing pet waste can potentially exceed the design capacity of the septic system. High volumes of hair and ash, not normally found in human waste, can interfere with septic system functions and clog drain fields. Don’t flush cat waste if it has litter stuck to it. Another alternative is to install a pet waste flushing system at your outdoor sanitary sewer cleanout if you are connected to a public sewer system (NOT a septic system). Two examples may be found at:www.doggiedoodrain.com/

Beats Music Organization hosted their first ever public music event, Bliss, on the evening of April 14, 2018 in the Nitin Gandhi Memorial Hall, Mountain House. The program featured various classical music performances. The free event was attended by a full audience who thoroughly enjoyed the show. Many people showed up to take delight in the wonderful music. The crowd took their seats in the hall after the refreshments.Students from Tabla Niketan started off the amazing event with a Kaida in Matta Taal. The eight students played marvelously and were loudly applauded at the end. Then, Mrs. Maithily Pingle Pathurkar performed two beautiful vocal pieces, Chhota Khayal in raag Malkauns followed by a classical Mira Bhajan. She was accompanied by Ashish Tare on tabla and Girish Bhai Shah on harmonium. The main performance of the event followed. A blissful flute concert by Nash Naubert. Director Lucid praised the firefighters’ work and said “We’re proud of you, and we’ll be proud to see that new engine rolling through town.”“Thank you for that gift,” added President Moreno, “It’s awesome. That’s really thoughtful of you guys.”The CSD Board voted last year to appropriate just under $400,000 to purchase the new engine, which had reportedly been a demonstration model. Members of the crew drove it back from South Dakota to bring it into service.Additionally, the District invested approximately $80,000 to properly equip the apparatus. “The bulk was for hose, nozzles, hand tools, breathing apparatus medical equipment, etc.,” stated General Manager, Ed Pattison. “One big purchase,” he added, “was our multiband radio - $8,000 for one mobile radio! We had to use our old Hurst Tool!” he said. The new apparatus replaces a used 1999 truck that had been purchased in 2015 for just under $100,000.

The Kite Run is a fun Mountain House tradition! We have a 5k or 10k. All finishers get a custom Rose Gold medal and if you register before May 20th you’ll get your choice of custom ladies tank top or unisex t-shirt. Course is flat, with trail and paved road. This year we are trying to change things up and offer more options for folks. We’ve decided to offer a “virtual” race option (in addition to running the physical race on June 2nd) This means you can register and pay for either the 5k or 10k and still receive your shirt/tank top, bib and finisher medal. Then you can run the race on your own schedule. You’ll still need to be local however, in order to pick up your race gear. We will not mail any race packets. We’ll offer a pick up option after the race event (dateTBD).
