celebrations of GLS institutions were arranged

at the City Commerce College. Dr. Sarla Achuthan, Director, GLSCRD, hoisted the flag. All the GLS institutions were represented in the celebrations. As a part of the celebration, patriotic songs were sung by the students of GLS institutions.

In her brief address to the audience, Dr. Sarla Achuthan extended a warm welcome and offered her best wishesto the gathering on the country’s 68thIndependence Day on behalf of Gujarat Law Society. She further expressed her respect to the freedom fighters and the great leaders of the country who made sacrifices for the country’s independence.

She said that India had become a great country among the comity of nations and it was the appropriate time to remember the contributions made by our country to the world: The concept of zero, the game of chess, a number of concepts in algebra, trigonometry and calculus, the

first university, the earliest school of medicine and the birth place of four religions, to name a few. It was said that the word and concept of“PRAYER” was also a gift to the world by India.

She added that India was a land of diversities. The magnitude of diversities was mindboggling: More than 350 languages, more than 1600 dialects, nearly 650 different tribes, hundreds of varieties of food items which had taken the world by storm, which had borne out that there was unity in

diversity. She emphasised that we as

educationists and teachers had also to share the responsibility of nation-building. For that, according to her, three things were required:1) The teachers should become

the conscience keepers of the society. Only then they

could provide value education to the students.

2) Our educational system had been by and large built on British models and more or less remained the same for 67 years. We needed to have many more reforms/changes in our educational system to enhance its equity,

access and quality. Technology and the world had changed drastically over the years. In order to keep pace, we needed to bring in innovations to revolutionise the educational system.

3) Every year, about 15 million young Indians came to the job market. She urged that we as teachers must ensure that the right balance of knowledge, skill and attitude were provided to the students so that they could stand on their feet and the country could leverage the demographic dividend. She also stated that

independent India’s greatest strength was its democracy. She quoted somebody who had said that “Democracy means sticking to the rules of the game even when the referee is not looking.” Therefore, she concluded by saying that we should join hands to make one and all good citizens of the country by imbibing civic senses, respect for public property, elders and women and by being law abiding.

tour to Sundarvan Nature park on 9th August Saturday for the students of Std. V. Children were very excited to be in tune with nature. The entire park was surrounded by huge trees on which there were several bats.

They first visited the birds section where they saw colourful turkey, grey guinea fowl, pigeons, love birds, peacocks etc. Their melodious chirping filled the air. Then they saw a snake show which cleared the false notions about snakes. The Indian rat snake, viper, saw scale, cobra were some among

them. The snake expert gave a lot of useful information about these venomous and non venomous creatures. Snakes are farmers’ best friend was well understood. They also visited the aquarium which exhibited several colourful fish. This visit brought the children close to nature.

Ms. Priyal Patel-Std VIII B for winning the second prize & a certificate of excellence for her dynamic role at a fashion show organised by Vacation 2014.

The thematic meaning of the Latin word August is a quality inspiring

and mingled with admiration and reverence. The month of August holds primeval importance for India because it was on the 15th of August 1947 that India was freed from the chains of slavery of the colonial rule. Every year we commemorate this historical date and redefine the meaning of our independence and commitment towards preserving the solidarity of our nation.

As one of its convictions C.U. Shah Primary School organizes and participates in several competitions to exhibit and emboss this fervour.

This year it once again participated in ‘Tak Dhina Din’ Patriotic Group Dance Competition and after passing through two rounds of

auditions paved its path to glorious victory as the first prize winner for the fifth consecutive time. It even repeated history by maintaining its position as the first prize winner for the fourth consecutive time at the patriotic group dance organised by Jagrut Jan. The performance given by the group of students was

primeval because it affirmed the assertion of ‘Mera Bharat Mahan’. Congratulations to the participant students, Principal-Mrs. Bela Mehta, Mrs Neha Dave-Incharge teacher, Mr. Shailesh Raval-Property In-charge and all the other teachers who contributed directly and indirectly towards the achievement.

We congratulate the following students who made us feel proud due to their success at different competitions;-

6-7SEPTEMBER 2014

The Wonder of Nine! The number Nine (9) is the most intriguing number. It is often associated with a divine connotation in the mystical thought and religions across the globe from ancient times. There is

both, negativity and positivity in this mysterious nine! In all the religions, Hinduism, Christianity and Islamism, the significance of number nine is unique. All the philosophies speak of nine openings for human beings as also the nine months gestation period for the birth which is of course common to all human beings! As we have entered the Ninth month –

Septemeber of the year, and are going to celebrate the Navaratri (Festival lasting nine nights), let us have a look at what the number 9 mean to us…

Navavidha BhakTi Sravanam (hearing about God); Keerthanam (singing in praise of God); Smaranam

(remembering God); Paada-sevanam (serving the lotus feet of God); Archanam (worship-ing God); Vandanam (obeisance/salutations) Daasyam (serving for the cause of God); Sakhyam (Mythri; friendship with God) and Aatma Nivedanam (Saranam/ total surrender to God) are the nine modes of devotion that are paths to liberation.

NavaraTNa Vajra (diamond); Vydoorya (Cat’s eye); Gomedhika (Hessonite); Pushyaraaga

(Yellow sapphire); Marakatha (Emerald); Maanikya (Ruby); Neela (Blue sapphire); Muthya (Pearl) and Pravaala (Coral) are the nine primary gems. These nine gems are associated with Navagrahas, symbolically representing them and are used as a remedy for Navagraha dosha

Nava rasaSrungaara (beauty/love); Haasya (mirth); Karuna (compassion); Roudra (anger);

Veera (courage/heroism); Bhayaanaka (fearful); Adbhuta (astonishment); Bheebhatsa (disgust); Saantha (tranquility) are nine forms of emotions expressed by human beings according to situations. These passions form the basic factors depicted by the artiste in all types of Indian classical dance like Bharatha naatya; Kuchipudi; Odissi etc.

NavgrahaSun (Surya); Moon (Chandra); Mars (Kuja or Angaaraka); Mercury (Budha); Jupiter

(Guru or Bruhaspathi); Venus (Sukra); Saturn (Shani); Rahu and Kethu together are called Nava Grahas. Though Sun is a star and Moon is a satellite and Rahu; Kethu are shadowy planets, they are referred to as planets in Hindu philosophy resulting in Nava-Grahas (nine planets)

Nava durgaGoddess Durga is said to have manifested in nine different forms known as Nava

Durga. They are Shailaputhri; Brahmacharini; Chandraghanta; Kooshmaanda; Skhandhamatha; Kaathyaayani; Kaalarathri; Maha Gouri; and Siddhidhaathri. Navadurga Stuthi is based on the above names.

9 iN ChrisTiaNiTythe number 9 symbolizes divine completeness or conveys the meaning of finality.

Christ died at the 9th hour of the day, or 3 p.m., to make the way of salvation open to everyone. The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is the only one of God’s annual Feast days of worship that requires believers to fast for one day. This special day, considered by many Jews to be the holiest of the year, begins at sunset on the 9th day of the seventh Hebrew month (Leviticus 23:32).

Nine also represents the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit, which are Faithfulness, Gentleness, Goodness, Joy, Kindness, Long suffering, Love, Peace and Self-control (Galatians 5:22 - 23).

NavaraTriNavaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme

goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. h a P P Y t e a C h e r S ’ d a Y !Mostly students in

college life avoid attending lectures.

They love to bunk classes because they think that they will learn everything from books easily. May be! But not everything because there are some crucial factors in teaching which cannot be expected from books. That is what a Teacher is for. They make everything easy for us by giving their knowledge and sharing their experiences.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated all over India on September 5 since 1962 as it is the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a prominent thinker, philosopher and an educator. Across the nation, tributes are paid to by celebrating his birth anniversary. This Day is celebrated as a tribute to the valuable contribution made by teachers to the society by imparting knowledge and enlightening and shaping the career of students. For students, Teachers’ Day is an occasion to pay reverence and gratitude to teachers for their selfless effort in shaping their career and enriching the education system in the process.

“A teacher is like a candle, it

consumes itself to light the way for others”. Teachers play the role of an educator, guide, inspirational guru, and a friend. While gently nudging the ‘slow learners’ to climb the steep learning curve, she engages with the ‘bright minds’ to delve deeper into concepts and thereby meet their need to achieve their goal in life. Teachers tap the fertile mind of young children and plant the seed of curiosity in them. This inculcates the values of self-learning, exploration, and philosophical inquiry.Teachers are regarded as the

back bone of our society. They have the greatest contribution to build up the characters of students and help them to become ideal citizens of our country.

Most of the schools and institutions make elaborate preparations for the celebrations of Teacher’s Day. The ceremony usually kicks off with a warm Teachers’ Day speech paying respect and thanking teachers for their contribution. This is often followed by a range of colourful cultural programs, feast and other activities which

make the event special and memorable. A few traditional ways of celebrating the event include presenting colourful flowers, beautiful Teachers’ Day cards or gifts to the teacher as tokens of love and admiration. At some schools on this day, Senior students dress up as teachers and take up their roles, giving out lectures and teaching the students of primary level. By doing so, the students get a hands-on experience and realize how it feels to be a teacher. In some schools feasts are arranged and in some reunions are

organized between the old students and teachers. People call up their childhood teachers and let them know that they are still remembered, giving them immense happiness and appreciating them for all that they did for them.

Thus, Teacher’s Day is the ideal day of telling your teachers that you feel blessed because of their presence in your lives. Keeping that in mind, we should all follow our teacher’s guidance in our life because teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grow Forever!

“A teacher’s purpose is not to create students in his own image, but to develop students who can create their own image”. Teachers, apart from giving us book knowledge also shows us the proper path of life. We sometimes feel that we are helpless without our teachers .They have made us what we are today.

So, hats off to my sincere and hardworking teachers.

Happy Teachers Day to all my teachers!!!

Anyone who laments that the days grow shorter as you reach September

should see Universal-International’s “Come September,” this light-hearted

comedy-romance, tells how a man getting on towards autumnal years can make a day last as long as any youngster—if the man is Rock Hudson, that is.

American tycoon Robert Talbot (Rock Hudson) visits his Italian villa once a year in September to meet his fiery Italian girl friend Lisa (Gina Lollobrigida). In his absence, his enterprising butler Maurice (Walter Slezak) has turned the villa into a very profitable hotel. When Talbot suddenly decides to visit Italy in June, Maurice’s

hotel has a group of girls (Sandra Dee and friends) chaperoned by Margaret

(Brenda De Banzie), staying at the hotel. What will Maurice do to avoid discovery? He tells Talbot that the girls are taking shelter at the villa due to lack of hotel rooms in town while the girls are told that Talbot is a lunatic whose family used to own the villa. Enter: a group of boys (Bobby Darin and friends) camping outside the hotel/villa and the stage is set for the comedy to begin. Talbot finds himself playing the heavy-handed guardian to the girls and unable to openly spend time with Lisa. The boys’ attempts to

outwit him and get to the girls make for hilarious situations. Apart from all the beautiful people and the hilarious comedy, the best part of the movie is Rock Hudson dancing the 60’s dance - he is adorably dorky!

Hindi movies inspired by this classic are Kashmir ki kali (1964) Ek baar kaho (1980). Some songs have also inspired a string of hits like Dole Dole Dil ( Baazi) nazerin milli dil dhadka (Raja 1995).

Entrepreneurship is now being seen as a distinctive approach to managing

rather than only the start-up phase of a venture. This broader view means that entrepreneurs can be those who begin a new venture, expand an existing one, or even those who are a part of a large organization. Entrepreneurs need to be inventive, creative, opportunistic, and persuasive so that they can manage risk and mobilize resources.

Through Saahas, a Three Day Entrepreneurship Development workshop, NRBBA aimed to provide students with a hands-on experience that will help them understand the entire process of entrepreneurship, from ideation to execution, including the potential challenges and pitfalls.

Prof. Ajay Dixit, Senior

Faculty at Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), Gandhinagar conducted this workshop, which also included real-life experience sharing by several successful entrepreneurs such as Ms. Ruzaan Khambatta,

Serial Entrepreneur-Director, E Comm Opportunities P. Ltd and N’ Wave Tech P. Ltd, Mr. Ravi Dalal, Promoter Corporate Suites and Fresh Roast Restaurant, Mr. Anay Mashruwala, Partner, Head

Marketing & Quality Control at M/s. Venus Engineering Works and Mr. Chandramauli Pathak, Advisor, Ahmedabad Management Association.

This workshop was unique mainly because it gave a practical idea about entrepreneurship development and also included the real life experiences of various entrepreneurs and motivated students to take up entrepreneurship as a career option. The workshop’s success

was seen in the feedback given by students. To quote Kushan Hariani, of NRBBA “Saahas has given me the Saahas to start up my own business and has kicked the entrepreneur in me to step into the corporate world.” According to Dhruvika Shah, HLBBA, “We learn the theory of B Plan and management in our curriculum, but Saahas made it possible for us to learn and think about the practical aspects of entrepreneurship.”
