Boozhoo OOCS families.  It was wonderful to see so many of our families at the Feast on Monday!  Miigwech for coming and for bringing a dish to share.  There was so much wonderful food!  Chi-Miigwech to Pierre Sherer and Rick DeFoe for feasting our drum and for speaking to our group.  It was very interesting to learn more traditions and this is how we can keep the Anishinaabe Traditions alive.

October is Bully Awareness Month.  We consistently work at showing the students how important it is to be nice to themselves and to others.  In October we are talking about it even more, it is important for everyone to role model to our youth how to treat others.  Monday, October 23 Ron Davis will be giving a presentation to students in grades 2-6 about bullying.  Be sure to ask your students what they learned from the presentation.

It has been reported to me that kids have been going into the house that burned; please remind your children to not play around any burned buildings, it is very dangerous and these unsafe structures could crash down on people.

Please check out our Upcoming Events and mark them on your calendar so you do not miss out on the fun!

From BonitaBoozhoo! During the last few weeks Oshki Ogimaag students and staff have been really busy! Waaban Wednesdays are still happening, students and staff are enjoying the

outdoor classroom. We have had our Ricing harvest and last week went to the Grand Portage National Monument to process our Wild Rice at the traditional processing camp

at the fort. Beth Drost, and her fellow National Park group were amazing. The students parched, danced and winnowed the rice, while being filmed by the National Park

Foundation. The biggest hit for the students was the birch bark wiigwam. The students enjoyed spending time relaxed on the beautiful fur pelts which were laid out on a cedar

floor. How nice it was to sit on a bear, caribou or buffalo rug!

We also harvested our gardens, we have a container garden and our large school garden. We split the groups up and K-1 stayed with Bonita to harvest the container garden

and all of the other students went with Tess and Andy. For a poor year weather wise, we still got a big harvest. Enough to put away, and more than enough to share!

Upcoming Dates to RememberOjibwemowin Language Table- Tuesday Evenings- 5pmOctober 16 – Picture Day (morning)October 16 – Vison & hearing screening (afternoon; make sure you bring your glasses!)October 19-20- MEA NO SCHOOLOctober 23 – Bullying Presentation; Ron DavisOctober 31 – Halloween parade@ 1:30 in gym, classroom parties after parade.November 3 – NO SCHOOL / Staff in-serviceNovember 9 – Parent/ Teacher Conferences / Book fair/ Environmental fair 4:00pm

October 9 was our Fall Feast. We wanted the feast to be on Indigenous Peoples Day and we also wanted to invite the community. Our students and staff created delicious

dishes using our fresh produce, made soups, roasts, and desserts.

We had the Stone Bridge Singers drum and dancers. We also had Elder Rick Defoe heal our school drum, this was done during the feast. Chi Miigwech Mr. Defoe!

Classroom NewsK-1 News- Ms. Jeana: This has been a very eventful couple of weeks of October. The students went to Eagle Marsh and they watched the older students harvest the wild rice. They went to the Monument and they got the opportunity to

process the rice the traditional way. Each student parched the rice, danced on the rice, and they winnowed. The students were also getting ready for the fall feast for Indigenous Peoples Day. The K-1 class made herb butter and bread with Tess. In the classroom, the students peeled apples for the apple crisp and the applesauce. They all had a blast making those dishes for the feast. We have been going to Waaban every Wednesday. Last Wednesday the students collected leaves for a project in the classroom. They searched through the woods to find the most beautiful leaves. Back at the classroom the students made a solution of glycerin and water. They put the leaves in the solution to soak for 24 hours. This experiment showed the students that putting the leaves in that solution, kept the original color of the leaves. Each student has a sit spot by a tree and at that sit spot the students observe their surroundings. After observing they write in their science journals. It has been a fun and exciting October so far. In my classroom, the students are working towards a party and to earn that party the whole class needs to earn a certain number of minutes. To achieve this goal, each student needs to read at least 15 minutes every night. Let’s work together to earn our reading party.

2nd-3rd grade – Ms. Nikki - Harvesting and preparing for the feast was the

focus in the second and third grade class for the last few weeks. The students

learned how to harvest and prepare vegetables, they read recipes and used

math to multiply recipes by four as we cooked two squash dishes. They felt

proud to give back to the community by preparing food for the feast.

Waaban Wednesday is going great as well. In second and third grade we are

making bird nests, looking for birds, and identifying birds we see. We saw a

downy woodpecker in the woods this week. Please help your child

remember to be ready each Wednesday with warm clothing and boots.

In class we are also learning about birds. This week we did several science experiments to explore different kinds of bird beaks. We are hoping to do

some projects about birds for the environmental inquiry fair in November.

In reading we have learned the fluency strategy "use the punctuation" to help us read smoothly and with expression. We learned the flippy dolphin

strategy. Ask your child about this to help them try different sounds for a letter in a word. We are also collecting sparkle words as we read. These are

interesting words that might be new words for us.

We are continuing our work with place value in math. Second grade is figuring out 10 more and 10 less for a number and third grade is reviewing adding

multi- digit numbers.

Please let me know how I can support reading at home. Reading at home is a key indicator of reading success for students. We have a few students

working towards the 300 minute club and one student is in the 400 minute club. Go readers!
