“All the news that’s fit to print…and then some!”

It’s been another exciting two months for the NCWFA

whippets in many fields

of endeavor. First up,

the Show Ring!

Abby (Angie Hagen) had an

exciting trip to Idaho in Octo-

ber. She won two group ones

and a thrilling BEST IN

SHOW! Abby is now a Top

Three Whippet!

The beautiful Vesper (Erin Campbell) won her first major in Neva-

da in September. At those same shows Mr. Leo (Charlotte & Mar-

tha Fielder) completed his championship with his own major. Great

job!

At the Idaho shows, pretty baby Peaches (Charlotte & Martha

Fielder) won a huge five-point-major! Wowee!

At our Specialty show Vesper (Erin Campbell) was RWB. She also

was RWB at the big show the day before our Specialty. Her pretty

sister Sky (Sharron Simmons) continued her streak as the Sweep-

stakes Queen, winning Best in Sweeps at our Specialty. Way to go

girls! Our own hot redhead Tally (Justine Kay) was Best of Oppo-

site Sex at the Specialty! Deacon (Erin Campbell) was Select Dog

and the “mother of them all” (well, at least Deacon, Vesper & Sky),

Maya (Erin Campbell), was Best Veteran in Show and BOS in

Veteran Sweeps. Pretty Misty (Angie Hagen) was Best Puppy in

Show!

In Arizona in November, Robbie (Libby deMille) won his first

major! Also on a road trip to NC in November, baby Carolina

(Kellee Livingston) won a total six points, including a four-point

major!

Let’s talk about performance events…

At our CWA races, The Mighty Bolt (Jean Balint) completed his

racing career with two more meet wins, retiring undefeated. We

will miss seeing this guy’s brindle fabulousness at our races. Baillie

(Debby Knutson) was high score FTE and won the match on Satur-

day. Tally (Justine Kay) won the match on Sunday and was High

Combined.

At our November lure trials, there was some exciting running,

which had an exciting result for Harley (Barbara Lawson), who won

1st in Open both days, for a total of 5 points, including a big four-

point major. Louis (Bruce & Susan Arnold) was tied for first on

Sunday and forfeited the tie-breaker run to claim the point he need-

ed to complete his FC. Way to go Harley & Louis! The ever con-

sistent Sage (Kellee Livingston) was second on Saturday & third on

Sunday to pick up a point!

That super cute super-runner Billie

(Lynne Armstrong) picked up more

straight racing points and a second in

meet at the recent NCWC NAWRA

races. This doll is almost a RCh!

Billie’s housemate Lefty (Lynne

Armstrong) showed that he has a su-

perior sniffer by completing his NW1

(Nosework 1) title on Halloween. No tricks and all treats for sweet

Lefty!

On the other coast, Super Veterans Sunny and Sammy (Mimi

Dygert) have been hard at work

on the coursing fields of NY.

Nine-year-old Sunny picked up

a big major for her AKC FC &

BOB over the young whipper-

snappers in Starksville, and

Sammy (this month’s cover

boy) finished his ASFA Vet

FCh! Who says good whippets

ever retire from running?

Let’s talk about puppies…

Chloe and Mason (Andrea Meyer) are the proud parents of seven

adorable pups, in shades of brindle

and fawn and white. Awww!

And matriarch Hallie (Andrea Mey-

er) completed the requirements for

her AWC ROM title (the ROM is a

title given to females who are the

dam of pups with at least seven quali-

fying championships). Hallie

achieved this milestone as the result

of only one litter, “the Terrible Ten”,

which has six show champions and

one LCM, with more to come!

Rover is nosy, but she sometimes

misses things. To be sure your brag is

not missed, send your news and brags

to Rover @ [email protected].

9/14/2014

Vallejo ,CA

Members Present: Jean Balint, Guin Borstel,

Brad Briscoe, Erin Campbell, Becky Coulter,

Charlotte Fielder, Martha Fielder, Jen Haas,

Justine Kay, Debby Knutson, Russell Kunkel,

Kellee Livingston, Marrianne Lu, Ed Odron, Mary

Jean Odron, Rick Ragan, Kim Robinson, Lenore

Vogt.

Guest Present: David Kay.

The meeting was called to order at 10:01 PM.

The minutes for the May meeting were approved

as published in the last SPEED.

Officer's Reports

President's Report: Brad is happy to announce

that the holiday party will once again be held at

Lenore Vogt's in Oakland. The big news is that

the Specialty in Pleasanton is coming up next

month and CWA racing in Fairfield is on for next

weekend.

Secretary's Report: No report.

Treasurer's Report: Kellee reported that the

bank balance is around 19 thousand dollars with

no large expenses outstanding.

Committee Reports

Racing: Jean reported that we are having a

feast for lunch next week. The Canadians are

coming. Jean brought up a possible issue that

we need to discuss. An exhibitor who has two

puppies entered needs to leave at noon on Sat-

urday to go judge an agility event. She has

asked Jean to rearrange the running order so

the puppies can get their three programs done

before noon. Discussion ensued about rearrang-

ing the meet to accommodate this one exhibitor.

Jean made a motion, that was seconded by Jen,

to rearrange the running order on Saturday only.

The motion failed. Jean reminded all who will be

attending that we need workers in all capacities.

Kim Robinson asked that all present each day

work together to sweep the field and bring equip-

ment back to the trailer for loading before lunch.

Lure Coursing: Russell presented an update

about our November events. Justin Dannebring

is coming up from Norco and is judging both

days. The SCGSF (Saluki club) is supporting

their breed entry both days and their club mem-

bers will help out with jobs in order to be trained.

This support should add 10-15 dogs per day to

our entry.

Show: Mary Jean reported that we are in count-

down mode. Jen and Debby would like to know

what you are bringing for lunch. Delia is in

charge of the silent auction and if you will not be

at the show you can mail your items to her. Set

up is scheduled for Friday at 3 PM or so. Brad

will be bringing the breakfast items and coffee.

Rescue: The was a purebred whippet stray in

the Sacramento City shelter, but he was picked

up by his people.

Whippetbilia: Marrianne might not be able to

bring the stuff to CWA racing due to a business

trip. She will, however, have it all at the Special-

ty. Marrianne is also planning another raffle at

the Specialty for gift certificates and gift baskets.

She will have "hundreds of dollars" in prizes.

Old Business: Ed reminded all that the logo

items are here to pick up. The Nominating Com-

mittee, represented by Kim, reported the 2015

Officer's slate. President - Brad Briscoe; VP -

Debby Knutson; 2nd VP - Mary Jean Odron;

Secretary - Guin Borstel; Treasurer - Kellee

Livingston. Board of Directors: Jen Haas, Rus-

sell Kunkel, Marrianne Lu, Ed Odron, Todd Wil-

hoyte. Brad asked if there were any floor nomi-

nations and reminded the members that they

can nominate for any position in writing before

the next meeting.

New Business: Discussion ensued regarding

new lure coursing locations. Applicant Bonnie

Moore has mentioned the field at Napa College.

Guin presented two fields in Daly City/South San

Francisco. Brad and Russell need to check out

each of these leads in person

The next meeting will be held after the Specialty

on October 18th.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:44 AM

Members Present: Valerie Barnard, Guin Bor-

stel, Heather Borstel, Brad Briscoe, Erin Camp-

bell, Libby deMille, Charlotte Fielder, Martha

Fielder, Tina Galzignato, Tina Graham, Jen

Haas, Justine Kay, Debby Knutson, Robert Lat-

tuga, Kellee Livingston, Marrianne Lu, Andrea

Meyer, Ed Odron, Mary Jean Odron, Donna

O'Toole, Sharron Simmons, Lenore Vogt, Todd

Wilhoyte, Duncan Waldrop, Jan Waldrop, Delia

Zarges.

Guests Present: Pearl Barnard, Dianne Bow-

en, David Kay, Kathy Thomas.

The meeting was called to order at 3:02 PM.

Officer Reports

President's Report: Brad thanked MJ for all her

hard work chairing the Specialty yet again.

Secretary's Report: No report.

Treasurer's Report: Kellee reported that the

current bank balance is approximately 19 thou-

sand dollars with around 5 thousand dollars in

the Club PayPal account. She reported that we

made $150 on racing this September.

Committee Reports

Show: Mary Jean thanked all of her hard work-

ing "people" who make the Specialty work year

after year. Brad for Set Up, with the assistance

of Guin and Ed and non-members the Hites. To

Debby and Jen for lunch. To Todd and Jen for

making Costco runs for food and supplies. To all

the members who bring great food and wonder-

ful auction items. To Delia, Donna, and their

team for an incredible auction. Delia reported

that Rescue made over $1200 at the Auction this

year.

Racing: Kellee reported that we had fun and we

made money this September. Guin wanted the

record to show that Gracie Mae won the world's

cutest pink hat at the races (see the back cover).

Lure Coursing: Brad reported that he would

have premiums available tomorrow. Currently

there is an error with the AKC (they have us

down as two events on one day, as opposed to

the correct one event per day), but this will be

corrected very soon. The dates for coursing are

November 22 - 23 and it will be once again held

in Dixon at CA Jacobs school.

Rescue: Guin reported that Rescue has had a

slow summer and early fall with no dogs in the

system since May. Guin would like to step down

as Rescue Team Coordinator, since she has so

much on her plate these days. She is more than

willing to stay on in a behind the scenes capaci-

ty, and is happy to train the new coordinator.

Any member who is interested in learning more

can contact Guin for a full Job Description.

SAMMY

(Kindred Marble Halvah, FCh,

MC, VFCh ) I met SAMMY 8 years ago on Long Island at a

BASH coursing

event just after I

moved to NY. Some

very nice people

were there for the

day with their then 2

year-old male whip-

pet Sammy. I was

still bent on a Mas-

ter Courser title for

Raine & I was run-

ning two grey-

hounds. At the end

of the day Raine had

been 3rd in Open &

Sammy had won a

major & Best Of

Breed. His family

was very surprised

& I was delighted

that nice people with

a nice dog were rec-

ognized. Maybe the East Coast was less political?

Well I forgot about Sammy until I got a call from

Brenda Malick some years later. Due to unforetold

circumstances could I take a male whippet & contin-

ue coursing him? My Mom had died so I was unable

to take him. About 6 months later I got another

call...could I take him NOW ? Yes. So I went and got

Sammy in Poughkeepsie & coursed him two days

later to a second place finish.

In the meantime Sammy went about the business of

fitting in with our motley crew....Raine, Dean, Barba-

ro , Jimi, Jewels, Hope & a small handful of this &

that Foster dogs. He quickly established himself as a

"major bed hound " , sometimes sleeping well into

the late morning ,emerging only when called !

In October of 2011 Sammy earned his ASFA title.

And in Sept of 2014 he earned his VFCh title.

Currently he is still chasing the elusive AKC cours-

ing title with 14 points & one major.

You never know!

It was rain in the forecast for Day One of the NCWFA AKC Lure Trials on November 22-23rd, but the threat of wet weather did not daunt

brave sighthound fanciers from coming out to Dixon to run! The Saluki Club of Greater San Francisco joined with the NCWFA to support the

saluki entry at our trials, and their help was much appreciated. There were over eighty total entries for Saturday, in the rain, with an incredible

31 JC/QC entrants. A few more hounds ran on sunny Sunday, making this a successful weekend. Thanks to our intrepid field crew of Russell

Kunkel (FTS), Brad Briscoe (FTC & lure operator), Greg Witt (lure operator), Terry Burchett & Jen Haas (hunt masters), and Tina Graham

(paddock master & score runner), and our wonderful team of field clerks, Guin Borstel, Charlotte Fielder, Barbara Lawson, Kellee Livingston

& Jen Haas, who kept the trial running. Jean Balint coordinated two feasts for our potluck lunches. We ate great both days! Kudos to our tal-

ented judges, Ginnie Kosinski, Lisa Voss & Justin Dannebring. Congratulations to all the winners of majors and points over the weekend,

especially new whippet FC “Louis”, & Pharaoh FC “Posh”, and both our great running BIF winners; “Seamus” the IW on Saturday & “Ender”

the whippet, on Sunday. See you all in June!

Rescue Alumni: Chester & Zoe

Sweet seniors Zoe & Chester

had to find a new home in

their twilight years, due to

dangerous conditions that had

arisen in their lifetime home.

These eleven-year-old litter-

mates had a self-proclaimed

gangster rapper & dog fighter

move in next door and his set

of dog aggressive Presa Ca-

narios had repeatedly attempt-

ed to eat the old whippets, as

they marauded around the cul

de sac. Animal Control and

the police’s hands were tied

until the evil mastiffs either bit a human or killed a dog, and Zoe &

Chester’s loving owners could not wait for their beloved whippets to

become a statisitc , so they sadly had to find them a new home.

NCWFA Rescue stepped in and made a match for these darling whip-

pets and Winters vet Elisabeth VanLeeuwen. The Dynamic Duo are

now in no danger of being eaten, have acres to run on, and live with

another wonderful senior whippet.

Crisis in Redding?!

The situation we have been following in Redding seems to be coming

to a head. Animal Control officers up north have fined the whippet

hoarder for being over the dog limit and he is expected to release

some of his animals to NCWFA Rescue. This has been going on for

over a year and we have been attempting to get the dogs, who are all

young, and include baby puppies, away from this bad situation since

August 2013. The mentally ill Redding resident who owns all the

whippets has been impossible to work with to this point, so we really

hope that Animal Control can persuade him to relinquish most of his

whippets.

Once again we welcomed our Canadian friends, Barb, Howard, Nancy,

Peter, Jennifer and thank them for making the long drive to Northern

California. We are so fortunate to have these very special people sup-

port our events.

We had a nice entry of 21 adults and 3 puppies. Bolt ran well and won

the meet but was strongly challenged by the Rosmor gang. Second,

third and fourth finishers were litter mates, Lucky, Cosmos and Strega.

Fifth place went to everyone's favorite, Marshall. This talented dog

never ceases to amaze with his racing skills. I think Miss Bennett was

trying to impress her future husband by finishing right behind him in

sixth place. Pete, who is the winner of "The Hardest Dog To Box In

The World" prize, gave a strong showing and took seventh place.

Rounding out the final placements in the Top Ten were, consistent

Harley, cute, cute Whoopi, the very macho Captain, and beautiful Bail-

lie.

Shown by her happy owner, Debbie Knutson, Ballie took the first place

honors in our conformation match. Second, went to the very handsome

Niko and third went to the lovely Canadian Champion, Donald. Fourth

place went to the very striking Strega. Strega went on to win the High

Score Combined Dog of the meet. Many congratulations to his proud

owner, Jack Pulley.

Our three adorable puppies all ran with great enthusiasm, desire and

focus. Their owners, Candy Gaiser and Bonnie Moore should be very,

very proud of these fine running youngsters.

Thank you to everyone who brought the delicious food for our pot luck

luncheon. It was outstanding and was thoroughly enjoyed by all of our

hungry participants. My sincere appreciation to everyone who worked

so hard to make this a successful and happy day of racing.

FAREWELL TO THE MIGHTY BOLT

I started the day feeling rather sad because this was Bolt's last CWA

race meet. At age 6, his owner Barbara Kusha and I, decided it was

time for him to retire while he was still on top of his game. In the past

five years this fine racer has competed in 25 CWA meets and has won

all 25. He has brought much joy and great pride to the Wyndsor name.

Once again Bolt did not disappoint us and came out on top again. It was

not an easy win because he was again strongly challenged by the Ros-

mor gang, Lucky, Strega and Cosmo. Top points went to Lucky and

this completed the requirement to get his ARX. Congratulations to his

owner and breeder, Leslie Rosko. Miss Bennett ran well and was High

BOS in the meet. Rounding out the final placements in the Top Ten

were Whoopi, Harley, Jane, Captain and Tally. They all ran extremely

well and deserved these high placements in the meet.

Our three puppies were most impressive and ran superb. Candy and

Bonnie are to be congratulated on these wonderful clean and hard run-

ning litter mates.

Tally, who finished in the top ten, also won first place in the confor-

mation match. This stunning bitch was our High Score Combined Dog

in the meet. Many congratulations to her happy owners, Justine and

David Kay. Other winners in the match were Donald, Niko and Zipper.

They all showed well and were worthy of their placements. Thank you

Kellee for doing such a nice job of judging.

Our luncheon was another gourmet delight. So much food and so deli-

cious. We have some very talented chefs in the NCWFA. The NCWFA

is a wonderful club and has many wonderful members. Once again their

hard work paid off and it was another very incredible weekend. Now I

would like to say thank you to these very special people who made it so

successful. Brad, my gratitude for everything you did, bringing the

trailer, setting up, taking down, running the lure and doing the boxes.

Your efforts did not go unnoticed. David Kay, many, many thanks for

coming both days to do the lure return. It really makes the meets go so

much faster and it is just easier for everyone. Mary Jean and Ed, we

couldn't do it without your support and help. You are so dependable

and never let us down. Kim, my appreciation for continuing to do an

incredible job running the paddock and practice. I would also like to

thank others who were a tremendous help in making this another spe-

cial weekend. Russell, Rick, Guin, Jenn, Charlotte, Marrianne, Val,

Debbie, Bonnie C, Bonnie M, Tina, Erin, Candy, Peter, Nancy and

Howard. I respect and thank you all for your help in officiating, running

the boxes, foul judging, boxing dogs, catching dogs, setting up, taking

down and loading the trailer. You make a great team and I am grateful

to you all. I would also like to give a personal thank you to Jennifer

Szabo for running and catching my dogs both days. You were a tremen-

dous help to me. My last thank you goes to our great race secretary,

Kellee Livingston. Once again you did a wonderful job of running the

meet. The club appreciates everything you do.

I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving and a blessed and joyful

Christmas.

for the time when we actually get the dogs, which could be tomor-

row or could be several months from now (if the police have to

become involved and if this has to be settled in court). We have

had a wonderful response from our members & friends, but still

will probably need more foster homes, since there may be up to

13 whippets, and all will need time in foster care to be socialized,

altered, and vetted. On the positive side, all of the whippets are

young, and most are female, which are super desirable to adopt, so

placement should be a breeze, once they have been altered and

evaluated.

If you would like to act as a foster home for

one or more of these hounds, please contact
