Our Ac vi es Chair, Leron Schraibman, has coordinated an awesome May meet -- visi ng Alan Taylor’s Restora on Facility, in Escondido. This visit is rare, and we are honored that Mr. Taylor has allowed us to see how he and his staff are preserving some precious cars.

Now -- on to June 15 -- PLEASE KEEP FATHER’S DAY AFTERNOON OPEN! Virginia Foster and Arthur Hammons have arranged for us to enjoy a wonderful a ernoon with the San Diego Polo Club. Please keep your calendar open for that amazing event!

Our Publicity Chair, Dyllon Shcraibman, has developed an impressive agreement with Symbolic Motors to help us reach out for new members who are buying new and previously owned PMCs from Symbolic. We have asked Dyllon to write an ar cle for our next newsle er, to bring you up to date. Dyllon’s idea is a totally new concept for RROC in North America -- and we’re very apprecia ve of his taking the lead on this new way of reaching out to our fellow RROC enthusiasts!

We have more fun and exci ng meets scheduled for the Summer and Autumn -- including a day yach ng on San Diego Bay. More news about that in the near future!

Happy Motoring! Here’s looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming meets!!

the hood” was only one of the factors which made our March meet incredibly memorable. Carter -- seriously -- thanks!!

A er 18 months of diligent work, our Region hosted the RROC 2014 Na onal Spring Tour. Our Steering Commi ee went to EVERY EFFORT to welcome our guests! A large number of our RROC San Diego members par cipated in the Tour -- which really added to the magic of our Tour. We’d especially like to thank Ed and Carole McVaney for opening their home on Coronado to our Tour Group! Rob and Ivonne Webb -- the eff orts you went to to welcome our Tourers to your mountain retreat are greatly appreciated -- and of course, thanks to John Ellison for opening up your Collec on to our Tour for our Black Tie Dinner! Special thanks go to everyone on our Steering Commi ee for crea ng “The New Standard in RROC Na onal Tours” -- Heather Brainard, Lee and Lori Cullen, Michael Gunnerson, Greg Millard, Ted Struck, Valerie Suter, Al and Steve Tarkington and Rob and Ivonne Webb.

Why is a Rolls-Royce a Rolls-Royce?

That morning when we met at Kensington Café, I was amazed that my Dad wanted to go to an engine pulling event when he does it every week! Maybe he only wanted to go with his friends, or just to have a breakfast. When we fi nished breakfast, we walked to Dr. Wahl’s house where he was going to pull the engine out of the Shadow. A few minutes later we arrived at his house.

My Dad started poin ng out how all the things were already disconnected or out of the car, but the engine and the transmission s ll connected and in the car. Immediately, my Dad started poin ng out to me that the transmission and driveline were s ll together. Then he also showed me that the tools that he was using were not the correct tools. Then my Dad just kept on watching everybody trying to take the engine out of the Shadow without saying anything, and I couldn’t understand why he wasn’t helping.

A er 45 minutes of watching people giving diff erent opinions of other ways to take out the engine with no results, my Dad fi nally lost his pa ence and said something like, “You can’t pull a Rolls Royce Shadow engine from the top without disconnec ng the transmission and driveline.” But nobody listened, and they just kept ge ng no results. Then I saw the owner of the car trying to disconnect the transmission from the car, but obviously with just a Crescent wrench and fi ve standard sockets. He was also not able to loosen the bolts without rounding the heads off the bolts; then I just saw by Dad shaking his head side to side. Then Dr. Wahl fi nally said that

he couldn’t do it within the me frame that was planned for the Meet. At the beginning, I felt bad for him because he wasn’t able to do it, and he was just trying to have a fun day with us.

Clearly this shows that a Rolls Royce isn’t a Chevrolet; that you just can’t take the motor out in a couple of hours. Now I understand why my Dad takes three days to take a Rolls Royce Shadow engine out of the car, and also now I understand why my Dad takes lots of care for his tools. Also he wanted to show all the people at the house that it’s a very diffi cult job to do.

1Monday was our fi rst day of driving, and it concentrated on the sights and a rac ons to be celebrated within the city of San Diego itself. Par cipants followed the San Diego 59-mile Scenic Drive that is prescribed by local visitor and tourism authori es as encompassing the highlights of things to see and do. day

3Wednesday was our longest driving day (about 160 miles) with a route into our local mountains. We drove through Ramona and Julian, and had lunch at the mountain retreat of members Rob & Ivonne Webb, followed by a drive out to Mount Laguna via the Sunrise Highway with views (on a clear day) eastward to the Salton Sea and Anza Borrego Desert State Park. On our way back to the hotel in the a ernoon, we visited The Evans Garage, the fabulous private car collec on of local business owner and hotelier Bill Evans.

ckThursday was our fi nal day, and the shortest driving day of the week. We toured through Coronado, drove southward on the Silver Strand, and visited the na onal wildlife refuge in the estuaries near our border with Mexico. A food truck met us at Otay Lakes County Park for

lunch, and we had our annual “mascot decora ng” contest for tour par cipants to memorialize the highlights of the week by decora ng the hood ornament on their PMC. Lunch was followed by tours of the U.S. Olympic Training Center near Otay Lakes, and a rela vely early return to our hotel. The concluding dinner on Thursday evening was a formal dinner hosted at the fabulous automobile collec on of Club member

John Ellison, where we were able to see “up close” many of his cars that have won awards at our Na onal Meets.

oil

drip

s This is the oil leak from a 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II. This Rolls Royce came in with a severe uncontrolled seepage of oil. As it turns out, this is a common issue with almost all the V8 engines. Upon inspec on, we observed the oil pan leaking oil badly at the back of the engine assembly.

To gain access to the oil pan gasket, the steering rack needs to fi rst be removed. In addi on, the engine support bracket, which cradles the front engine mount, and the dip s ck tube must be extracted as well. Once these were removed, the gasket was easily accessible. A er removing the pan we scraped the gasket remnants off the engine block and the pan and then cleaned the pan thoroughly inside and outside. Next we proceeded to re-install the cleaned oil pan with a new gasket, making sure to ghten the bolts to Factory specifi ca ons to prevent any future seepage. A er the pan was fi ed, we re-installed the steering rack and then the engine support bracket. All in all, this is a rela vely simple step-by-step process that will take you no longer than 10 hours. It’s me consuming but straigh orward.

The parts you will need are:

UE73704 - Oil pan gasketUE73618 - Fuel/Oil sender gasketCK865 - Dip S ck SealUR19203 - Front Engine Mount (this is op onal and will only need to be replaced if covered in oil or separated from the moun ng block.)RH0000 - Oil Filter AssayE0000 -- Drain Plug WasherEngine Oil - Whatever you use

Good luck blokes and happy motoring!

Remember oil leaks also damage other rubber components causing other systems to fail which is not good for these vehicles due to there weight and systems performance required.
