RGVFD Memorial Service The RGVFD would once again like to remind you of a beautiful service that they have decided to render to every resident in the park. If you have a family member who passes away and would like to have a memorial service for him/her here in the park, the volunteer fire dept. is here to help. We will provide a beautiful table set-up, cake, coffee, and a guest book. If there would be more food brought by other people, they would help to serve it. The chair person to contact is Mary McCarthy at

352-624-2901.

F M O Federation of Manufactured Home Owners

Jo Anne Fieschel Vice President, District 13

The bi-annual FMO State Assembly was held in Kissimmee December 2-4, 2019. All districts were well represented by their officers. Also present was Lee Jay Collin, FMO attorney and Nancy Stewart Black, FMO lobbyist. Election of officers and amendments to the FMO by-laws was the main agenda of the meeting. Nancy Black Stewart spoke on the fact that the FMO and the FMHA (park owners group) have conflicted ide-as on how to regulate the mobile home industry. Where the FMO wants the state to have more power, the FMHA wants them to have less. Where the FMO wants park owners/managers to be certified in Florida Statues 723, park owners do not want to be governed by FS723. The FMHA has been successful in getting Senator Ed Hooper to propose SB818, a bill if to become law will be very detrimental to all mobile home owners on leased lots. Everyone is encouraged to call or write to our senators. Our next FMO meeting will be here at Rolling Greens on Jan. 22, 2020 at 12:30 pm in the auditorium. Lunch will be served. Even though you do not have to be a member to attend any FMO meetings, your membership pays for the FMO attorney and lobbyist. Applications are on the FMO Happenings board in the auditorium or give me a call at 631-987-6842.

HOA Association Meeting Minutes for November 5th, 2019 The pledge of allegiance was given, and the singing of God Bless America was sung by everyone. A moment of silence for past residents was honored by Bonnie Quackenbush. The meeting was then called to order by President Sandy Leach. The Secretary's report for the month of October was accepted as read. The Treasurer's report for the month of October was accepted as read, as was the year-end report to date. Treasurer Mike Stone gave us a detailed report on the membership figures, expenses, and income for the past year. There was a comment made that the hard work and time spent on the books this year was remarkable...thanks to Mike Stone. The HOA is thankful to the 408 members this year that have supported us, and to the Area Directors that worked tirelessly to get those numbers, along with our new resident contact, Sue LaCheusse. Rich Allen, By-Laws Chairman, thanked his committee that helped him make the needed changes and additions to the by-laws, and he also read the changes and additions. Tom Mullen, Nominating Committee Chairman, thanked his committee for helping to get all the people to run as candidates for the HOA, which came to an amazing count of 11 people volunteering for positions... the most we have had in a very long time. He then introduced the candidates, which were then given a few minutes to express how they could help the HOA stay viable. Charles Pennington explained in detail the sale of the old firehouse, and how it will be used. Linda Lee Krebs gave us information on Life Line Screening, the Arts and Kraft show that's upcoming, and the New York Club Thanksgiving Dinner, where proceeds go to Operation Shoebox. Gail Morrison, election supervisor gave us a detailed report on how the voting is to be done, and how the elections will work. The Share the Wealth was held. There were 7 $10 winners. The meeting was then adjourned at 8:15PM. Respectfully submitted, Bob Senge, Acting Secretary

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I am excited to start the new year. I am anxious to meet with homeowners from last year as well as our new owners and neighbors in Rolling Greens Vil-lage. I will be starting to collect H.O.A. dues shortly after the new year begins. If you were not a member of the H.O.A. last year, please consider it this year. Being a member has its re-wards. It gives you a voice in decisions that are made on your behalf. Dinners and events that you would have to pay for oth-erwise are free to members. I met so many nice people last year. I may not remember your names but I usually remember faces. Let’s make this a great year by joining the H.O.A. and coming to our meetings. Any questions? Give me a call. I am here to help and want to do the best job that I can, for you. Thank You

Update to our “Light up Night” 2019 By: Mary Hill

I need to give an update to our Light-up Night. First of all, it was a beautiful evening, and it was wonderful to see so many people here. The night was so successful because of all who came and donated to Operation Shoebox. Thanks to those who brought cookies; they were delicious and most of them were eaten that night. Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Santa, AKA Earl & Heather, to Mike and Nancy for getting the carolers together, and to Antonio for getting some snacks and drinks. The total collected that night was $1, 111.00. Since then there have been several people who stopped and said they could not be here that night and gave more totaling $185.00 for a grand total of $1296.00 for the month of Dec.! Thanks everyone; you made all of our efforts worthwhile. Hopefully it helps to brighten several soldier’s Christmas.

NY/New England Christmas Party DECEMBER 19, 2019

By: Mary Hill

Once again the New York, New England Christmas party was the place to be. Dinner of either roast beef or chicken was deli-cious! So many volunteers from both clubs kept everything running smoothly. Thank you everyone, you know who you are. The Terry Cole Band had a lot of people up on the dance floor. Good food, good party, good friends! What more can we ask?

We didn’t have enough time to welcome new members or cele-brate birthdays and anniversaries, but we still had a few people who joined. Welcome to our club Jeff & Gayle Shatzer and Ruth Pozo

We believe that anniversaries should be celebrated. Members of the NY Club celebrating anniversaries during December are: Harry & Bonnie Wiggins, 47 years on the 9th; Harold & Barbara Stockholm, 53 years on the 13th; Truett & Rosemary Spivey, 19 years on the 16th; Dan & Shelly Sitko, 50 years on the 19th; Bill & Marilyn Schrader, 55 years on the 19th.

December birthdays are: Karen Badders and Chris Thomas, the 3rd; Lori Crill and Earl Krout, the 5th; Bob Breen & Debbie Waxler, the 14th; Rob Levine, the 15th; Heidi Beagle, the 17th; Mary Evans, the 18th; Mary McCarthy, the 23rd; and David McNeel, the 27th.

As has become our custom, our next dinner on January 16th will be catered by Chef Joan. It will be soup and sandwiches, at a cost of $8.00. She always brings 4 or 5 different soups and everything to make your own sandwich. Her soups are delicious! Entertainment will be by “Rocky Rowe Band.” Tick-ets will be available for purchase until January 12th from Rose Tan at 624-2597, Linda Lee Krebs at 624-3154, and Mary Hill at 724 261-0984.

From all of us in the NY Club to all of you in Rolling Greens Village, we send wishes for a very happy 2020, and we look forward to several more great evenings with our club. See you there!

Happy New Year, everyone!

New England Club Thanksgiving Dinner On Thursday, November 14, 2019, the New England Club held its annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Turkeys were purchased by the club and cooked to perfection by club members. They were delicious, as were all of the side dishes provided by club mem-bers. A short business meeting followed dinner. Linda Lee led a spirited game of the “Price is Right.” After the game, the food items were donated to the food pantry.

On January 9th, the New England Club dinner will be catered by Arianna’s. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for guests. For more information, see the flyer in this newsletter.

RG Book Review The Pilot’s Wife by Anita Shreve

by Betty Bailey-Masullo

From the late night knock on Kathryn Lyons door, we are drawn into the unraveling of both the story of her husband’s plane crash and his secret life. I enjoyed this quick read (only 293 pages) mystery-thriller. I loved-the author’s descriptive writing of the physical local scenes, familiar to me set on the New England coast. “They walk along the beach in the fog. Mattie, in a Red Sox jacket, runs ahead to look for crabs. The beach is flat and shallow, curved like a shell, the sand the color of weathered wood with a calligraphy of seaweed written along its crust.” Her painting with words of wonderful scenes continues later in London and Ireland. She conveyed the host of emotions felt – especially the turmoil of grief from losing a loved one. One of my favorite characters, Mattie, the 15-year-old daughter had one of the best lines “but how do you ever know that you know a person?” I liked that I was forced to think about this question and many others. When it sometimes seemed the reader figured out things quicker than Kathryn did, the use of flashbacks supplied insight into the mindset of a wife left alone. Kathryn rationalizes a “marriage was like radio reception. It comes and goes.”

Set in the 1990’s, an unfamiliarity with the political headlines of the day could leave some confused. This is just one example of our book club discussions filling in the pieces. Thanks to our group member who knew real life pilots and recounted their secret lives. This book has been made into a movie (unabashed plug…. Look for our mid-month movie matinee coming soon to a com-munity center near you!!) We will get to see how the screen-writers end this story. Anita Shreve left it open ended for us to decide.

RG Library Corner By Barbara Critchfield

I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with family and friends and that you're ready to welcome a new year. Lots of our seasonal friends are arriving to renew friendships and join in our many activities. Just as a reminder to our winter friends and new residents, the Li-brary is open from 8:00 AM until 10:00 PM every day. Stop by at your leisure to bor-row a book, magazine, audio tape, puzzle or movie and have a cup of coffee while you visit.

As January is usually a time for new reso-lutions, a variety of health and fitness books will be featured on the coffee table in the Library. Feel free to browse through them or take a couple home with you for a few days. Take another look at our Fitness Center and let our Activities Coordinator, Antonio Crews, know if you wish to begin using the fitness equipment.

We are so thankful for all the books, maga-

zines, movies, audio tapes and puzzles that have been donated to the Library by the residents. You don't have to have a library card, as everything in the Library can be borrowed on the honor system. You may borrow, read, enjoy and then return the items for someone else to borrow. Jan-uary is a good time to look through your books at home and donate the ones you've already read and to return to the Library some borrowed books that may have found a place on your shelf at home.

If you have a large donation of items for the Library, please give me a call at 352-433-0924 and I would be happy to pick them up at your home. My name and tele-phone number can also be found on page 3 of the RG telephone directory.

I'm sure all the ladies who attended our Fashion Show the past four years remem-ber what a fun day it was. The Fashion Show was held in the auditorium in Febru-ary last year and we made a generous contribution to benefit Hospice of Marion

County. Several of our beautiful ladies also modeled in the show along with Hospice volunteers who modeled clothing and ac-cessories from the Hospice Thrift Stores.

For Fashion Show 2020, I'm looking for several volunteers to organize and be chairpersons. If you would like to have this event, please let me know that you're will-ing to step forward and volunteer to put on the show. Be assured you'll have the as-sistance of some other faithful volunteers. Gather your friends and your ideas and the past chairpersons will be glad to share information from previous fashion shows.

I liked being able to fill in last month's blank calendar with my own daily plans and have heard from several residents that my list of events was helpful. Look for an-other article in this newsletter listing what I already have on my personal calendar for January. It might be a helpful reference for you.

Best of the New Year to everyone! See you in the Library.

RG Book Club by Dorothy Portalla I always find writing this time of year enjoyable. The articles are due mid-month so I have to think about my AUDIENCE reading my comments almost a month in advance. Here I go-I bet you had a great Christmas. Did Santa bring everything you wanted? (That is funny since, as I type, my Christmas shopping isn’t done). How many of you stayed awake to see the ball drop? Bill and I will be in New Hampshire for the holidays. Last year we spent New Year’s Eve and Day in the hospital waiting for our great grandson to be born. At 9pm, New Year’s Day, Cole was born. I had been in the room for his mother’s birth and I was blessed to see him born. I guess I can say that New Year’s Day 2020 was momentous. Our December meeting was great. Our discussion generated a lot of “Oh, now I understand what Anita Shreve was foreshadow-ing”. Anita opened the book with a late night knock at the door. I think we all related to that feeling, that dread that fear created. I enjoy our book club. We often have readers who have not quite finished the book. To me, that reflects how comfortable people feel in our group. It all depends on the book as to how much is revealed in the discussion. Anita waited to the last few chapters to draw us into the unexpected conclusion. One member ex-pressed their desire to finish the book rather than not, after our discussion gave him just enough of a tease to the ending. As I said last month, the area of Ms. Shreve’s books tends to be New England. This book’s setting is enhanced by the culture of New England. It is the hidden connection that helps you understand the characters’ positions. I hope this little tease, along with the

review included in our newsletter, will entice you to pick up THE PILOT’S WIFE. We ended our get together with a Christmas Gift trade, or a Yan-kee Swap as we call it in New Hampshire. I want to thank Barba-ra Critchfield, Rolling Green’s great librarian, for her help with selecting our gifts for the swap. I have to tell you all that this is the first swap I’ve ever been to that everyone kept the gift they selected! We had a mystery brownie. I called them Mystery Brownies because I tried out a new recipe. That can be danger-ous, but brownies are usually pretty safe. We have selected our January book, MR. PENUMBRA’S 24-HOUR BOOKSTORE BY ROBIN SLOAN. In looking for books it was consistently suggested. It grabbed me from the first. “Lost in the shadows of the shelves, I almost fall off the ladder. I am ex-actly halfway up. The floor of the bookstore is far below me, the surface of a planet I’ve left behind.” As I read the rest of the para-graph I asked myself, “What have I done?” But the rest gets bet-ter and better. Clay Jannon, the main character, lost his job as a web-designer and ends up walking into Mr. Penumbra’s bookstore. Robin Sloan has brought a host of unique personali-ties and humorous situations. This is another book that will bring about an animated discussion at our January 8th meeting. Hope this little intro about our book will make some of you curious enough to join us. Cheryl Noble offered up a suggestion for our February meet-ing, THE TENDER BAR by J.R. Moehringer. She had heard of this book from a friend who loved it. For me, this is often the best way to get a good recommendation. Our list of readers is expanding. Hope we can continue to add more.

Bingo by Judy Crites Hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays. Good news, we now have enough money to buy a new ma-chine! Many thanks go to the following: First, our many Bingo players along with a “50/50” share the wealth, you're the best! The HOA members for voting to give us a donation. The Rolling Greens Volunteer Fireman's associa-tion for making a very nice donation for much needed funds. Without, we could not have made our goal so soon. Our anony-mous donors who don't play Bingo. Cove, for providing us with a place to store the machine, after remodeling the auditorium, and for providing us with the ability to project our numbers on a screen for all to see. It's taken a “Village” to obtain our goal. Thank you all so much! The Bingo machine has been ordered. Remember, Bingo is every Tuesday. Buy your cards from 11 AM to 12:15. We start playing at 12:30 to approximately 3:30. We will teach all new people if needed. Come join us. I am grateful to live in Rolling Greens Village.

Is Your Calendar Blank?

by Barbara Critchfield

My calendar is never blank. It's always full of activities. I have to write so small, it's hard to read. I liked having a blank calen-dar included in the newsletter last month so I could fill it up with what's keeping me busy.

I heard from several residents last month that the list of my personal activities was used as a good reference by them. I thought I'd take a look at what I've already got on my January 2020 calendar as I write this article on December 17th.

RECIPE CORNER

KETO CHICKEN SOUP Fran Misterly 352 229 3835

This recipe swaps cabbage in place of noodles to keep carbs low(4 grams net carbs per serving) 4 stalks celery, diced 12 oz. Mushrooms, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 4 TBSP dried mined onion 8 oz. butter(2 sticks) 4 tsp. dried parsley 2 medium carrots, diced 2 quarts chicken broth 6-8 cups shredded rotisserie chicken 4 cups green cabbage, sliced into bite-size strips (or can use coleslaw mix) Melt butter in a 5 quart Dutch oven. Sauté celery, mushrooms, garlic + onion in butter 3-4 minutes. Add parsley, carrots + broth. Season with salt + pepper if needed. Simmer till veggies are tender. Add chicken + cabbage, simmer until cabbage is tender, 8-12 minutes. Makes 4 quarts(16 serv-ings). Freezes well. I add feta cheese on top when serving.

Flag Code Submitted by Linda Downs

Rules of thumb to follow when flying and displaying multiple flags – American flag, state flag and/or company flags – in dif-ferent situations. Often times at corporate offices, government buildings, or even small businesses, several flags are displayed at once. The US Flag Code establishes protocol on how to properly fly more than one flag at a time. Three side-by-side poles and the US Flag, state flag and

company flag: when looking at the display, from left to right, the US flag should be placed on the leftmost pole, the state flag in the center pole and the company flag on the far right pole

Three side-by-side poles and the US Flag, state flag and a POW/MIA flag: when looking at the display, from left to right, the US flag should be placed on the leftmost pole, the state flag in the center pole and the POW/MIA flag on the far right pole. However, generally the POW/MIA flag is flown under the US Flag on the same pole

Three side-by-side poles and the US Flag, another nation’s flag, and a state flag: from left to right, the US Flag, the nation’s flag, followed by the state’s flag

Three flags and one pole: from top to bottom, the US Flag, POW/MIA flag, state flags, US territories, followed by mili-tary flags. Two national flags can never be on one single pole; the two flags must be the same size and height

According to the Flag Code, it is never acceptable to fly a com-pany flag, corporate banners or other form of branding/advertising (political ) on the same pole as the US Flag; you will need to have a separate flagpole to display both flags at one time.

A rule of thumb: when there are three poles the same height, position the flags left to right as described above. However, when a center pole is taller than the others are, prominence of flag is center, then left pole then right pole. Check out other flag etiquette to make sure you are flying your flags right. American Flags If you have any worn out American Flags, VFW Post #4209 on 36th Ave. has a collection box and when enough flags are collected they hold a proper burning ceremony for worn out flags. Pat Shore, 7101 Cherry Pass or Laura Puglise, 203B E. Gleneagles Rd. are both Auxiliary members and would be hap-py to take delivery of all worn out American Flags. Thanks!
