Sire: Ch Barton Manor’s Einstein
(NOX),
Dam: Dogwoods Touch of Class
(CALLIE)
I drove to Ringgold, VA on 18
March 2000 and brought home
Gretchen, sold to me as a pet. There
were still two pups left with Callie,
the mother. I felt sad for Callie as she
saw me take her pup.
Gretchen has always been a sweet,
loveable pooch. We went through
puppy class; Gretchen preferred peo-
ple over other dogs. We went
through two obedience classes and I
never mastered the heel. Gretchen
has always had an urinary inconti-
nence problem. She went through a
lot of testing in her earlier years and
the problem could not be corrected.
Medication keeps it under control.
When I needed kennel service, Bar-
ton Manor was my choice. I first
learned of the Swissy at a dog show.
Then I learned of Barton Manor. I
have used a local kennel service for
short stays.
Gretchen and I visited a nursing
home once a week for several years.
Gretchen is a gentle sweet pooch
with expressive eyes. Gretchen’s
sweet personality pleases all. We took
care of Bradley, one of Nox’s off-
springs, for about eight months while
his master was unable to take care of
him. Gretchen and Bradley had many
happy days together. Bradley was
younger; however, much larger. He
was a big boy! Unfortunately, Bradley
went over rainbow bridge in June
2007.
I have been a member of the Na-
tional Club and the C&P Club. Early
on, Gretchen and I attended several
outings with the C&P Club. In 2008
it was discovered through a routine
tooth cleaning that Gretchen needed
to have a root canal
in her upper fang and
a couple dead teeth
removed. In 2008 I
broke my foot and it
was a long time heal-
ing. Gretchen’s hips
were starting to act
up and we did not
attend any other
C&P events. I have been to a couple
of dog shows.
Summer 2009, Gretchen had a bloat.
It is amazing how she healed from
that experience. Gretchen has been
healthy most of her life. She now
takes medication for her hips and
needs help getting up from a tile sur-
face. Gretchen’s love of walks is in
the past; a stroll around the fenced in
yard satisfies her today. Gretchen’s
kidney blood work shows a decline
in her kidneys pool chair (her weight
varies from 90-100 pounds); this year
I purchased her a
baby pool which she
can get in and out
on her own.
Overall, I know I
am most blessed to
have my Gretchen
still with me at age
11 ¾. I am thankful
every morning to
feel life in her body. Once a dog has
won your heart, you are hers for life
and she is yours. You become re-
sponsible forever for what you have
tamed. he love of a dog is the best
deal man has ever made.
It’s a Wonderful Life—Gretchen!

Kids BAROO!
The Ralph Steadman Book of Dogs The Ralph Steadman Book of Dogs (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; $24),
his fourth volume of canine art, contains dozens of black and white
and color drawings laced with his peculiar brand of dark whimsy.
Steadman’s style is slashing and ferocious; his unforgiving caricatures
explode like pen and ink pip bombs. Underlying the mayhem, how-
ever, is a mischievous sense of humor and a sincere love of dogs.
Sammy in the Sky
When a Pulitzer-winning journalist and a painting master collaborate on a chil-
dren’s book, attention must be paid. Happily, in Sammy in the Sky (Candlewick
Press; $16.99) by Barbara Walsh, with paintings by Jamie Wyeth, your attention
will be amply rewarded.
Walsh’s story about a girl coping with the death of her old hound dog is wise and
tender, avoiding the maudlin as it ambles toward an uplifting finish. Best of all, the
text is a worthy vehicle for Wyeth’s talent.
Sammy in the Sky is a classy, beautifully produced volume. Recommended for chil-
dren ages 4 to 7 who have mourned the loss of a cherished pet.
Amazing dogs: A Cabinet of Canine Curiosities Talking dogs, acting dogs, genius dogs, ghost dogs: All can be found in Amazing
Dogs: A Cabinet of Canine Curiosities, by Jan Bondeson (Cornell University
Press; $29.95). Bondeson, a senior lecturer at the University of Wales college of
Medicine, has corralled into 320 profusely illustrated pages many of history’s
most fascinating canines. Some, such as Lord Byron’s boatswain, or Owney, the
post-office mascot, still have currency with modern readers. Others—like Mu-
tino theWonderful Dog (who could beat French noblemen at dominoes) and
Don the Speaking Dog (who slayed audiences with his surefire line, ―Hungry!
Give me cakes!‖)—are long-forgotten historical footnotes guaranteed to amaze
readers.
