Message from the Board of Directors Harry Pate, President

Well folks the reunion of 2005 is behind us now. What a reunion it was. This was only my second that I was able to attend but it was spec-tacular. Everyone owes Doug Schutz a Very “Well Done”. I could not have picked out a better hotel location. Everything went smoothly with the exception of a small quorum problem during the membership meet-ing. While we are handing out Well Done’s, we have to remember our outgoing President Dave Nesbitt. Dave has been our president for the last two years. During that time we have started running our own Reun-ions, Working off of a budget, and operating under a set of Bylaws and Constitution that was voted on by the entire membership. Luckily he is still on the Board as our Reunion Director for Baltimore next year and is continuing as publisher of the Buccaneer. Thanks for all you’ve done for the Association, Dave.

The USS King (DLG-10/DDG-41) Association Board of Directors and Staff for 2005-2006

Following this article is a list of all of the Board of directors and their responsibilities. Included is a list of the staff jobs that folks have volun-teered for or have been roped into one way or another! Now we have to start looking to the future. The Membership selected Branson, Mo. for the 2007 reunion site. We have had problems with Bal-timore because we didn’t start early enough. Is there someone in the general area that could help out there? We have Board members who are finishing their third term on the board and will have to be replaced. The Bylaws and Constitution were set up so everyone could contribute but no group could dominate the Associations agenda. Remember it is better to have too many running for office than not enough! I am here to serve the membership of this association. I will include all the ways you can contact me. Phone, email, or snail mail. If you have a question about the Association or a problem with something we are doing let me know. We are your Board of Directors and this is your Association, Let us Know! Harry Pate 102 W. I just read an article in The Ari-zona Republic newspaper in the 4th of July edition that has a lot to do with our association and all mili-

tary associations. “Each year thou-sands of veterans gather around the world. They gather under the units they served under such as ships, camps, units, divisions, air wings and such. They gather to remember

MEMBERSHIP Dan Haynes, Director

I would like to thank the good members of the USS King associa-tion for their support in my board position. The USS King was the best ship with the closest crew that I was ever onboard. It has been my pleasure to be in attendance at the San Diego and New Orleans reun-ions. I regret not being able to at-tend in Seattle due to my new job and the move to San Diego. Speak-ing of San Diego this is where the King was home ported during my

The sale of the “State Baskets” was a great success. We had contribu-tions from many parts of the coun-try. The sale of the baskets raised $400 for the King Association. This exceeded the contributions from the sale at the reunion in New Orleans. Thanks to all of you who purchased the raffle tickets. We would like to continue this tradition next year. We will welcome all donations of State baskets or something repre-senting your state. If you would like to be a part of this sup-port system for the King Associa-tion, please contact Connie Cud-dihy at [email protected] or bring your baskets, etc. along to the reunion in Baltimore in 2006.

Missing the Reunion left a void in my life. Due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to attend the Seattle Reunion. I missed the camaraderie, the story telling and seeing shipmates that I have grown to know. What more can I say, I won’t be missing Balti-more 2006 if I can help it. A new Board has formed and I am proud to be a part of it. This is my second year on the Board as Communica-tions Director and in that position I get to ride herd on the publisher of the “Buccaneer,” Dave Nesbitt, and the webmaster, myself. I will try to get caught up on the submit-tals to the website and I look for-ward to helping organize another great reunion.

old comrades they served with in war and peace. Whether at home, overseas, combat zones. We gather to pass on history of this Great Na-tion of what we did and accom-plished. This we pass on to others and family. Articles are written about our reunions in newspapers and some are viewed on television. What we do is pass on to the next generation our accomplishments and failures so they will remember us for what we were.” We served our country the best way we knew how. And as the USS King DLG-10/DDG-41 reunion winds down and we think back of OUR accomplishments aboard the King and remember old friends and the new one we have made. We can think back of all the good times and bad during our tour(s) on the King. We all know what a Great Ship she was. How we nursed her through commissioning, the shakedown cruise, the ORI’s, West Pac, East coast, yards, upkeep and conver-sions. We all mourn the losses of crew members and we remember them at our reunion. And now that the reunion in Seattle is over we can now look forward to Baltimore, Maryland and more memories of our days on the Best DLG/DDG in the Fleet.

tour of duty. I have many good memories of the crew and the ship. I shall always be proud to have been a sailor on board her.

Reunion Dave Nesbitt, Director

The Seattle Reunion is now “History”. From what comments I have heard, the reunion was a huge success and most importantly, everyone enjoyed themselves. To my way of thinking, the reunions are what the association is all about, an opportunity for ship-mates to get together, exchange “sea stories” that our spouses have gotten tired of hear-ing about years ago, renew friendships and make new ones. This year’s Raffle at the reunion was another huge success. We hope to continue with the baskets and items representing our states. When Connie Cuddihy first sug-gested it to the spouses in New Orleans, the idea was for them to bring in baskets filled with items from their home state. The raffle table contained: A bag from Arizona do-nated by Darla and William Whitfield, a Florida Sea Shell Wreath donated by Dave and Joanne Nesbitt, two bottles of wine from the state of Washington donated by Doug Schutz, a framed picture of WW II Destroyer silhouettes donated by John Gerten, a basket from South Dakota donated by Jerri and Roger Geist, a basket from Virginia donated by Marti-Ann and Randy Gil-lette, a basket from Minnesota donated by Connie and Steve Cuddihy, a two bottle bag of wine from the state of Washington donated by Patti and Bruce Carlsen, a colored pre-commissioning photo of the King and a Plank Owner Zippo Lighter donated by Jerry Cook, and a basket from the state of Washington. The monies brought in from this and future raffles will be used to help defray the costs associated with putting to-gether reunions. During the Annual Membership Meeting, it was confirmed by the members that the 2006 reunion will be in Baltimore, MD, June 15th to the 18th. The contracts have been signed with the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor. Because of the difficulty in getting Hotel lodgings in Baltimore at that time of year, we started our efforts in January of this year. The dates we originally desired for the reunion were not available, and the hotels were sold out. Bill Brewer visited many of the hotels in Baltimore, before finding the Holi-day Inn. With these thoughts in mind, we discussed the Reunion for 2007 during the Membership Meeting, and the final choice was Branson, Missouri. This year I will also be working on finding Hotel space in Branson for our 2007 Reunion. If there is anyone in our membership that lives close by to Branson and would be willing to help out, please contact me at: [email protected] or call 321-259-7560. Only Association Members can give input as to what they would like to see at Re-unions. This is one of your privileges of Membership, and we would also like to know what your spouses would like. Please let me, or any Board Member know if there is something you like or do not like at the reunions. We are continually trying to find ways to make the reunions more appealing so that more of our shipmates will attend and enjoy themselves. Without your input, we are sort of groping around in the dark trying to please everyone.

Hello fellow KINGMATES! Another great year passed with stun-ning achievements across the organization. The website is still winning awards, we are still gaining members, and the reunion express has left the station. More is still to come. This next year we will attempt to improve our bid to have another ship named after Ernest J. King. Mark Donovan continues to look for the right way to gain visibility needed for this to happen. Chuck White has been in contact with Margaret van den Berg, Admiral King’s grand-daughter who speaks for the entire family in their support for this effort. This will be a very difficult task, but we must get behind it. Write your congressperson, your senator, and anyone else you have contact with. There are only a few DDG-51 class ships still to be built and this re-quires our attention NOW! In the next several months, I will be updating the database and online access via the website. The new user interface should be a big improve-ment. One of the disappointments I have faced this past year is the lack of updated shipmate information coming my way. Please, please, if you know anything about anyone you served with aboard KING, look at the database to see what information we have and then, using the link for the database administrator, send me anything you have about these guys. This is the second year we have been able to manage the organiza-tion with a completed budget. This is significant in that we focus on spending your money in the right ways. 2005 should be another great year for us, especially with the plans for reunion in Baltimore, MD. See you there.

Missing Ship’s Movement A Sea Story by: Dave Nesbitt

My 1st ship in the Navy was an old DE that was based at Fleet ASW School, San Diego. On that ship when they said that liberty ex-pired at 0730 hours, they meant it, because if you came aboard after 0730 hours, you could plan on spending the next weekend in the brig. Every Friday afternoon the ship’s Master-At-Arms would march these guys off to the brig for the weekend. As a very young Sea-man, this instilled in me a mind set that I would never be late getting back to the ship before liberty ex-pired. After 20 years of service, I was only late 2 times and both times were excusable. But one time I missed ship’s movement. That is a statement that would strike terror into any sailor’s heart. The King had just started her shakedown cruise, we left Bremer-ton, WA in January 1961 and went into San Diego for the weekend, and I had liberty! Saturday morn-ing I left the ship and went to visit my sister and her family in San Diego, we did not watch any TV the whole day or that night. When I woke up on Sunday morning, I turned on the TV, the picture that appeared on the screen was that of a DLG outbound near Point Loma, then the picture was gone and the next news segment started. There was only one DLG in San Diego at that time so there was little doubt in my mind that it was King. Vi-sions of Brig time came into my mind. I called the Shore Patrol on Broadway Landing, they said that King had gotten underway on a mercy mission and that they had it on all the news that the crew was to return to the ship, they then said; if I turned myself in there, they would have to put me on report and advised me to turn myself into the

Naval Station on 32nd Street late at night. So, sometime after 2300 hours I turned myself in, they got me to a rack in a dorm with the aid of flashlights. The next morning I woke up surrounded by “Kingsmen”, if memory serves me, there were a full 2/3 of the crew was there! Thoughts of abundant liberty were soon dashed when it was found that the XO and many of the officers were also in our com-pany. The XO had plans to get us all put into schools while King was gone (so much for liberty!), but King returned to La Playa Fuel pier the next evening where we were waiting. King promptly went back to sea. The three days that King steamed to go out and rescue an injured seaman off a freighter with basically only the Duty Section is a story in itself, one that I would like to read about.

The photographs in this newsletter were all submitted by me, unless otherwise noted. The group pic-tures and some of the award pic-tures were graciously provided by Seattle Photographers Inc., for which we are grateful. To the majority of our members, approximately 100, we send out the “Buccaneer” via email, this saves the association a great amount of money per year, as it costs almost $1.00 for printing, plus $0.37 in postage. This equates to almost $500 per year. However, every

Regular Member is entitled to re-ceive the “Buccaneer”, when the email version of the newsletter is sent out, those email addresses that are not valid are noted, and a hard copy of the newsletter is mailed out to those individuals, if you do not receive the newsletter, please let me know after you verify that the infor-mation we have on you in the data-base is correct. It is not uncommon that with each postal mailing of the newsletter, we get about four re-turned with no forwarding address.
