Dear NCBC, I would like to thank each and every one of you for remembering me in prayer during this time of shoul-der surgery recovery. I appreciate all of the prayer cards and love shown.
Brandon Buckley
We would like to thank all of our church family for the love and concern shown to us through your prayers, visits, cards and phone calls during Lawrence’s stay in the hospital. God bless you all!
The Dowdy’s
My family and I are vacationing while I am writing the June 2017 newsletter article. We have spent the past few days in the Washington D.C. area & we are taking a break before we begin exploring more areas in Virginia and elsewhere. One thing that has impressed me is that among the historical sites there is always a sign of new progress. Our U.S. Capitol was built in and is filled with statues and art from hundreds of years ago. But un-derground you will find a high tech rail transportation system that shuttles in Sen-ators, congressmen, their staff and visi-tors like us from the office buildings and other government headquarters in the city. The White House has been standing since but it contains the most complex security features of any building in the world. Even the historic Fords Theater has its own wifi and is within walking dis-tance of a Starbucks!
Ever since I have been in ministry, there has been a growing clash between those who want to hold on to traditions and oth-ers who are keen to embrace the new. There are certainly some ancient bed-rocks of our faith that cannot change ... the inerrancy of the Bible, the message of the gospel, and the centrality of Jesus Christ. At the same time, certain things can change, but not at the expense of the foundational truths of Christianity. It does not have to be either or ... tradition and innovation can and must work together if the church has any hope of remaining rel-evant. The culture around us is changing. The church exists to reach this unsaved generation. Therefore, some change is necessary to penetrate the darkness with the gospel in a way that both stays true to
the biblical message of salvation and engages the lost around us.
This summer is full of opportunities to do just that at North Columbia ... later this month, by popular demand I might add, we will begin our third summer of TV Land Bible studies. Je-sus used parables, a popular form of entertainment in the 1st century, to communicate the gospel message. We can use modern day parables like television shows in the same way ... not to replace the Word of God but to help illustrate the unchanging truth in a way that reveals Jesus to a modern audience. In the same vein, we will again offer Vacation Bible School to help reach children for Jesus, and our youth will be travelling to Mobile, AL and take part in Centrifuge ... a weeklong en-counter with Bible teaching, music and more.
This is a great time to be a part of North Columbia. For the past several years, our key-phrase has been NCBC is the place to be ... and a church alive is worth the drive. Now, can we come together and be North Columbia ... one New Testament Family reaching the Next Generation?
