President’s Message June, 2020
It is with a heavy heart that I start this month’s President’s mes-
sage. As many of you know, Richard Hunt passed away in May.
In reading his obituary I learned many things about what a full
life Richard had. To many of us, Richard was a friend, a fellow
turner and he was Learn’n Turn. He ran the Learn’n Turn portion
of our meetings for about 12 years and under his patient watch
many beginners caught the bug. For me it was an awl. I look at it
now and I know a novice made it, but Richard made me feel like
I did such a good job! I will also always associate weed pots with Richard since that is
something he brought often to Show’n Tell. At our July meeting I will be asking the
membership for a vote to rename Learn’n Turn the Richard Hunt Memorial Learn’n
Turn (or similar, if someone has a better suggestion) in his honor. Richard always had a
twinkle in his eye and an impish grin and he will be dearly missed. I have included the
link to his obituary, in case you missed it.

On a lighter note, we have an exciting demo for July. Jeff Hornung of The Wal-
nut Log will be doing a remote demonstration for ART and they have invited us to partic-
ipate. Jeff will be demonstrating his Morocco Blue signature piece–which will cover
texture, color and liming wax. If you are not familiar with Jeff and his work you are miss-
ing some very interesting techniques. We will log in at 6:00 to have a short business
meeting first, which will end around 6:45, or when ART members start logging in. A link
will be emailed some time before then.
Some other things in the works are: Mike Smith is working on getting Cindy
Drozda for a remote demo, most likely in December and AJ Moses and I are working on
a “field trip” to see a logging/milling operation in Sterling. I will check it out and let you
know more at our next meeting.
Below is a list of members willing to spend their valuable free time with other mem-bers in hope of helping to promote education and skill building by sharing of their knowledge. IMPRORTANT INFORMAITION REGARDING JULY 2ND
MEETING
Hello fellow wood turners,
We have been invited to join the ART group for a remote demo by Jeff Hor-
nung on our meeting night of July 2nd.
Jeff is a professional turner from the St. Louis area.
The demo will be starting at 7 pm so we will be holding our business meeting
starting at 6 pm.
When I get the zoom link I will forward it to you.
There will only be one zoom link for next weeks
meeting/demo.
ART is going to allow us to have our business meeting before the demo so
you will be logging in only once.
If you want to listen to the business meeting we will start at 6 pm. This
should give us time for a short business meeting and also time for show and
tell. The link will be sent out early next week.
I would like to Thank Isaac Burk from ART for inviting us to join them for this
demo.
We are working on some exciting things for the remainder of the year. Details
to come.
Stay safe and happy turning.

BOB TERRILL I have gotten more interested in figured wood. Burls, etc
The first picture is 4 bowls made for metal froggers and to allow ikebana. My wife loves the art form.
What interested me was all 4 bowls came from the same piece of spalted maple.
The next is a hickory bowl made from a wood raffle piece and lastly my second burl- from the guy in
Princeton, before and after.
The variety is so fascinating to me.

Here are some photos of my latest. Large cedar log (shown on lathe) turned end grain. The finished
natural edge piece is 15” wide by 10 1/2” tall. Finished with several coats of wipe on poly.

MARTY GOULET
This is a job I got from CNEW.
Match existing balusters.
I don't have a duplicator. I made a story stick to mark the various features. The other side of the
stick has gauges to measure the various diameters.
