In the fall of 2015, I decided to pursue the AP certificate for Master Builder, Prototype Models - the newest in the Achievement Program, if you can call 1987 new. This certificate goes beyond Master Builder - Scenery, which calls for creating scenery in a prototypical manner, and judges how well one creates a specific prototype scene in miniature. Hello, members of the HUB Divi-sion and readers outside ourgroup. As I write, what I hope

will be the Spring's last snow is meltingoutside. Alas, it made driving difficult themorning of our Spring TRAINing showfor both organizers and attendees.

Since my last column, the seasonal peakof HUB activities has come and gone. TheNEMTE was a success, and my sincerethanks goes to all whose volunteer effort,experience and wisdom made it happen.The module group put on good shows atWilmington, Marlborough, Lexington,Wenham and West Springfield. MoreHUB volunteer effort made our HolidayParty a fun, friendly, festivity. Our SpringTRAINing clinics were well attendeddespite the weather.

Speaking of Spring TRAINing, I'd like tothank all four candidates who ran for theHUB's three open Board of Directorsseats, particularly Rick Murray. OurBylaws require us to present a choice tomembers, rather than a slate to vote for,and simply running for office is an impor-tant bit of volunteerism.

Coming up, May's Railfun is a weekearlier than usual due to the ModuleGroup's trip to Saint John, New Brunswick

on the regular weekend. It will focus onthe why and how of the NMRA's Achieve-ment Program. On June 17, Fay Chin willpresent "Modeling With 3D Printers."

This month, I'm traveling and having agood time meeting fellow model railroad-ers.

Model railroading can be a solitary hobby.Building models or working on the layoutcan be a calm oasis, a refuge from socialpressures or the demands of work, aprivate world where the modeler sets boththe standards and the schedule.

Lone-wolf modelers must be self-reliant;they may base their work on magazines,internet sites or advice from people theymeet at hobby shops, but they must ownthe tools and master the techniques them-selves. They may be unprepared for oruninterested in comments from others,much less kidding about 'playing withtrains'.

But model railroading needn't be solitary.In a world with extreme sports, 'PumpkinChunkin' and video games, our hobbydoesn't need to be hidden from neighborsand co-workers. In fact, if anyone in theHUB territory didn't know about thehobby, they probably found out when RodStewart came to visit George Sellios; TheBoston Globe published stories about it onsix consecutive days.

And there's a lot to be gained from beinga gregarious model railroader: help han-dling heavy benchwork or awkward piecesof backdrop; an appreciative audience ofneighbors, friends and kids when youshow your layout; advice on hard-to-undoprojects like developing a track plan orpouring 'water' in a river or harbor; bor-

rowing or lending a static grass applicator;and help in making a larger layout 'comealive' with multiple trains or formal oper-ations.

Many of us in the NMRA are membersbecause we're gregarious: Sharing amodular layout with friends gets yourtrains running sooner, with a lot lessimpact on your home, budget and freetime. Sharing experiences with modelingtechniques and materials at a RailfunNight can get projects completed sooner,with less frustration.

To support our organization and thehobby, be ready with a warm welcome forlone-wolf modelers whose circumstanceschange. Above all, remember 'ModelRailroading is Fun' and 'It's Your Rail-road.' Each of us sees the hobby andpeople's work differently; one of the bestparts of becoming friends with anothermodeler is learning about their goals andhow their work expresses them.

Shanty TalkSpring Nostalgia

In the spirit of Spring, I have decideda rebirth of my model railroading is inorder. This year, I've already partici-

pated in several operating displays andhave several more planned for the futureincluding the trip to Saint John, which mywife and I thoroughly enjoyed last time.While I just finished a weathering clinicfor diesels at the March Railfun, I alsogave a more general weathering cliniccovering freight cars and buildings at ourSpring Training event on April 3rd. I amfurther scheduled to give a clinic onALCOs at the National in Indianapolis onJuly 7th. Oh, did I mention I will also bebringing a module for displays at both theSaint John and Indianapolis shows? Thisspring and summer will also be extra busyas both my son's and daughter's familiesare expecting soon, making this grand-child 6 and 7. It never gets old. In fact,my sister, who now has my niece and herson living with her, has indicated she willbe picking up the old American Flyer trainboard I made up for my boys when I firstmoved to the Boston Area. I don't use itanymore but the Flyer is virtually inde-structible, like Lionel, and makes a goodfirst train set for younger children. This4x6 board has a couple turnouts, a cross-ing flasher and automatic uncoupler. Notexactly a Cadillac, but just enough to stirthe imagination, and that is what it's allabout, isn't it?

This is also the year I planned to get backto working toward a few AP certificatesfor my "Master Model Railroader." Ispent Saturday afternoon adding somedetails to a scratch-built flat car I madeover 40 years ago for my mythical TaconicLumber Company. It was to be located in

the Taconic range between western Mas-sachusetts and eastern New York. Duringmy college years when a layout just wasnot practical, I focused my efforts onbuilding cars. Using a craftsman woodenkit as a guide I scratch-built four boxcarsthen went on to construct four flat cars, awater tank car, a boom car, a maintenancecar, a caboose and 33 log cars in variousstates of completion. A Prairie style 2-6-2logging engine was kit-bashed from an oldTyco 2-6-2 and a Cary boiler casting withadded details. I doubt that any of thesewill be taking any prize in modelingcontests but, with a bit more added detailand some documentation, I hope to qualifyfor some merit awards towards my APcertificates. I'll keep you posted on thatone.

The first weekend in April started with abang and wound up in nostalgia as MarkHarlow, Skip Furlong and I traveled upnorth on Saturday to participate in "Rail-run," the brainchild of the late HUBmember Bill Borelli. Bill belonged to agroup of local model railroad enthusiastsknow as the B&M or "Broken andMangled Society." They participated inround-robin operating sessions spent atregular intervals running trains on individ-ual member’s layouts on the north shore.Bill had the thought of opening this up toother model railroaders in the area once ayear on a given weekend in early Spring.At the time Bill was part of a group ofmodelers who used the Dynatrol System,which allowed, I believe, up to 16 differ-ent locomotives to operate independentlyon the same track. This was one of theearly forerunners to modern day DigitalCommand Control, and opened up tremen-dous operating possibilities for modelrailroaders. No longer did one need to bea wiring genius to construct dispatchpanels with all types of rotary and toggleswitches to control separate blocks.Rather, with two simple wires to the rails,one could focus now on the fun of operat-ing a trains. It made it easier to engage inprototype activities like switching a yard,making up a train and handing it over to alocal crew, with a different engine. They,in turn, could then perform the switchingof local industries while passenger trainsand through freights plied the main. Carcards became popular to track cars and awaybill inserted in the card pocket indi-cated the individual car destination. Now

train crews had actual work to do and itbecame a lot more fun to "operate." Therest, as they say, is history.

Bill was one of the first speakers thatLarry Madson invited to talk at RailFun(not to be confused with "Railrun") night,an activity launched to provide HUBmembers with a monthly gathering oflike-minded people interested in trains.Bill was so enthusiastic, as he describedoperations on his layout, that many of usthought we too would give it a chance.We signed up for Railrun and have beenrunning ever since. On my first trip toBill's layout, he had a problem with oneof the boosters that wouldn't power ablocked section of the layout. While Billstruggled with the problem, people startedleaving. I then suggested that as long asthe current draw was not excessive, whynot wire the single working booster to bothblocks. It worked and we were off andrunning with an, albeit, smaller crew ofoperators. I was especially happy itworked; as a newcomer I did not comeoff looking like a blithering fool. MaybeI did have a thing to offer to the hobby

Lyle Sorenson, a friend of mine who I metthrough the Norfolk library, also had aDynatrol to run his home layout and I eveninstalled a controller in one of my RutlandRS-3 engines to run on his system. Lyleknew a lot about making realistic rockmolds and scenery as well as weatheringstructures. I subsequently learned a lotabout those techniques from him. Lylewent on to take over as Headlight editorfrom Bill and I started giving weatheringclinics for rolling stock at Larry's Railfunnights. My involvement with the HUBdivision itself came earlier with theencouragement of Bob Blick who owneda train shop back then in 1985 and con-vinced me to join the module group andbuild a module to run trains. Not satisfiedwith the limited operating times of twicea year with the HUB, I built two end loopsand then with Bob, Mark Harlow, Lyle,George Thompson, Jeff Turner andmyself, we formed the Coastal MountainRailroad module group with a linearlayout. With each of our favorite railroadswe managed to span the continent fromcoast-to-coast through the mountains. Weinformally chartered ourselves in 1996and that little group slowly grew so that

Building the TransferYard on the Manassas

In 1851 the Virginia Board of PublicWorks approved an East/West rail-road link from Manassas, VA, to

Front Royal, VA. The line wouldconnect the North/South main line of theOrange, Alexandria & Manassas Rail-road to rail lines servicing the Shenan-doah Valley. The new Manassas GapRailroad would transport agriculturalproducts from the valley andindustrial products manufacturedin Front Royal to eastern marketsat Alexandria, VA, through itstransfer yard at Manassas with theOA&M. The Manassas Gap Rail-road was sold to the Baltimore &Ohio Railroad in 1867 and to theSouthern System in 1896.Although the name is long gone,the line still operates as the "B"line of the Norfolk Southern alongits original right-of-way, and stillserves as an important east-westlink.

My HO Manassas Gap Railroadreimagines the line as a successful,independent short line in 1918.The layout reinterprets 52 mileswith stops at The Plains, Marshall,Rectortown, and passing throughthe Blue Ridge Mountains atManassas Gap before arriving inFront Royal. The motive power issteam 4-4-0's and 4-6-0's. Heavyhauls are managed by a 2-6-0.Occasionally the Norfolk &Western will use the line for aspecial headed by an early 4-6-2Pacific. Most of the box cars and reefersare 36 feet, and the Kimball-stylecoaches and baggage cars are 46 feet.

When I designed the original layout, Iplanned a single line (as is the prototype)with a reverse loop at each end - Manas-sas and Front Royal. I knew I wantedto build a yard on the Manassas end, butI did not consider a transfer yard at thetime. I used John Armstrong's bookTrack Planning for Realistic Operations(Kalmbach Publishing) as a guide forthe layout, and initially started with his

recommendations for a classificationyard. I immediately ran into a problemwith limited space. I knew I wanted tohave an engine house and turntablewithin the reverse loop area. Therewould also be service tracks for coal andsand, maintenance-of-way, and acaboose track. All of which would cutdown available space by over five feet.And there was the problem of how toswitch into the yard. Also, in my earlythinking was whether to work a "wye"into the Manassas area as in the proto-type. There just wasn't enough room foreverything!

Two issues were resolved when Idecided to build an additional 2x7-footsection on the Manassas end. Thebenchwork is at a right angle to thebenchwork with the reverse loop. (Seesection marked "to Manassas & Alexan-dria, VA.") This gave me an opportunityto create a wye, and have the mainlinepass behind the engine house and to thenorth (rear) of the yard. A curved switchwould provide the access to the yard onthe East end. The wye also provided abypass to the south (front) of the yard.I now knew how to get into the yard and

bypass the yard, but didn't know justwhat kind of yard it would be.

For several years I had been clippingpossible yard designs from Model Rail-roader magazine (Kalmbach Publish-ing), but most of them were too large formy space. With the reverse loop atManasses on one end and a curve totransition onto other benchwork on theother end at The Plains, both 24" radii,the yard was turning out to be verysmall. Using all possible space, the yardwould be only nine-feet in total length.I planned to use #6 Shinohara switches

for the yard, but a traditionalswitch ladder would use a hugeportion of the space. Could acompound switch configuration beused to save space? That seemedto help with the space issue, but ayard with stub sidings just didn'tseem to work the way I envi-sioned. The existing transfer yardat Manassas, which can be seen onany satellite mapping program,suggested the possibility of havinga yard that was accessible fromeither end. However that meantmore switches using up more valu-able real estate on the layout.

I had long been interested in a yarddeveloped by Gerry Leone on hisBona Vista Railroad. He usedShinohara switches in a compoundconfiguration at either end of theyard. After several emails withGerry about his design and howthe yard functioned, I triedworking it into my layout. Gerrytold me that he thought his yardwas not long enough, and wassubstantially increasing the lengthon his new layout. My space was

shorter than his original, but it was allthe space I had.

In my final plan, you will see that theyard mirrors itself from the centereast/west tracks, forming a north andsouth section. Each section has anarrival/departure track, an assembly orbreak-up track, a run-around, andstorage tracks. The team track runsbehind the engine house or cars can beshuttled via the west end of the yard, as

well, without blocking the main line.The south section of the yard givesaccess to the engine facilities and servicetracks. The layout does not have astaging area, so the yard must functionas realistically as possible. Trains canbe assembled on any of the four centereast/west tracks, depending on availabil-ity. Two passenger sets of two- or three-cars can be temporarily stored on thesiding at Manassas station, or on theyard storage tracks.

At this time, I have completed laying alltrack in the yard. The yard will beelectrified through my NCE DCCsystem. The switches will be operatedwith Tortoise switch machines and con-trolled with Touch Toggles from BerrettHill Shop.

the model to the prototype. Side by sidepictures are encouraged, to show howthe model reflects the original. Finally,a brief outline of the scene is required,along with a detailed description of themethods and materials used to build themodel. While all this was a lot of work,it was also fun setting up photos thatcompared scenes from long ago with themodel railroad in my home. Here is anoverview of Company Square as itappears on my layout.

The old post office is in the lower leftcorner. The company offices are in thestone building with brick trim in thelower right. Across the tracks can beseen the company store on the right andthe depot in the center, partially blockedby EBT #14 pulling wooden boxcar 170.Behind them, EBT combine #14 isparked in front of the station. In orderto fit the scene into the available space,Main Street had to curve more sharplyto the left than in the prototype.

The Setting

By the early part of the 19th century,coal had been discovered on Broad TopMountain in southern HuntingdonCounty. But the black diamonds werethirty miles from the nearest transporta-tion system, the Pennsylvania Canal,making large-scale mining unprofitable.It wasn't until the 1870s that investorsturned to railroads as a way of haulingthe semi-bituminous coal deposits northto a junction with the PennsylvaniaRailroad. The narrow gauge East BroadTop Railroad and Coal Companyreached the coal fields in 1873. A newcompany town, Robertsdale, was estab-lished to house workers in the mines.The first structure to be built on the sitewas the company store, erected on the

western side of the EBT rails between1874 and 1875. The store was eventu-ally joined by three other companyowned buildings: a stone block depotwhich also housed a track scale to weighthe hopper cars filled with Broad Topcoal; a building housing the local postoffice and other businesses over theyears; and an ornate office building thatwas headquarters for the railroad'sparent corporation, the Rockhill Iron andCoal Company. On the following map,the EBT tracks curve through the centerof town, roughly following the meander-ing path of Trough Creek. Where thetracks cross State Road 319 (MainStreet) the Company Square buildingscan be seen: the company store on thelower left, the depot across the street, thecompany offices across the tracks fromthe company store, and the old postoffice across Main Street from thecompany office building.

The Company Store

One of the first buildings to be con-structed in Robertsdale was the companystore, constructed between 1874 and1875. The store was demolished in1997. While the miners and townsfolkreferred to it as a "company store," infact the store was never operated by therailroad or coal company because Penn-sylvania law prohibited coal companiesfrom operating their own stores. Inorder to get around the law, the coalcompany leased the store to a merchantwho then paid the coal company apercentage of the profits.

Construction of the original sandstoneblock building was completed in the fallof 1875 following the completion of therailroad from Mount Union to Roberts-

To qualify, one has to build a model ofa prototype scene containing at least sixmodels of prototype equipment andstructures. At least four different typesof models have to be represented:● Rolling stock● Railroad structures● Caboose or passenger car● Motive power

Any two of these six models have to bescratch-built; the rest must be superdetailed. Finally, plans or photographshave to be provided to verify that themodel faithfully represents the prototyp-ical scene.

I chose to model a scene from the coalmining town of Robertsdale, Pennsylva-nia, the southern terminus of the EastBroad Top narrow gauge railroad. TheEBT operated as a common carrier from1875 to 1956, followed by another50-years as a tourist railroad. Specifi-cally, I wanted to model the four rail-road-owned and built structures inRobertsdale's Company Square: thecompany store, the railroad station, theold post office building and the RockhillIron and Coal Company office building.All four of these structures were clus-tered around the railroad crossing atMain Street. Three of them still stand;the company store was razed in the1990s. In the following photo, the oldpost office building is on the left, withthe station partially visible behind it.The coal company office building is onthe right. The company store is notvisible in this picture.

dale the previous year. Specializing inthe sale of mining tools, black powderand other items used in area mines, thestore also carried a wide range of generalmerchandise, ranging from clothing,hardware and food to candy and toys forthe children. Here is a picture of thestore as it appeared in the 1950s.

No model of Robertsdale would becomplete without including this impos-ing stone structure, which stood at thecenter of town for more than a century.But there exists no commercial kit forthe building, and it was clear from thebeginning it would have to be scratchbuilt. Fortunately, the HuntingdonCounty Heritage Committee hadapproved an Endangered Historic Build-ing Study of the company store in 1995,copies of which were still available fromthe County Building Commission. Also,a series of articles based on this studyappeared in the Timber Transfer, apublication of the Friends of the EastBroad Top (FEBT) in 1995, so there wasample information available, includinga complete set of plans on which to basean accurate model.

The first step in constructing this inter-esting building was to convert the draw-ings to HO scale. Once the plans weredrawn up on graph paper, the next stepwas to find windows and doors fromTichy and other sources that closelymatched the originals. It wasn't possibleto find an exact match in every case, andin those instances the modeler's rule of"close enough" produced a reasonablefacsimile. The walls were then cut froma sheet of 1/16 inch styrene and thewindow and door openings cut out.

For the sandstone block walls I used anew product from Micro-Mark – self-adhesive papers printed with a specialprocess that raises the surface of eachindividual stone above the "mortarlines." I used cut stone papers for thewalls and gray shingles that resembledslate for the roof. The west wing wasroofed with Evergreen #4522 standingseam roofing painted a zinc chromatecolor to match the original.

Robertsdale Station

Robertsdale station is the only buildingin Company Square that I did not scratchbuild. The one-story prototype wasconstructed from the same molded con-crete blocks used in many other EBTbuildings, including the Mount Unionengine house, the old Robertsdale postoffice, and the coal company officebuilding. The Friends of the East BroadTop have purchased the building andrestored it as a museum. The EBT trackspassed to the left of the structure in thisrecent photograph. An operator stoodin the bay window facing the tracks tooperate the scales.

The Friends of the East Broad Top(FEBT) offer a kit for building thestation. The FEBT kit comes withprinted paper stone blocks, which themodeler is instructed to glue on card-stock walls. But the FEBT also offerssheets of cast stone blocks that are

identical to those used on the original.One could use the paper walls as tem-plates to cut out the resin block sheetsand use these for the walls. However, Ilearned that Craig Williams, a fellowmember of the FEBT, had used the stoneblock sheets to cast a complete set of thestation walls, complete with all windowand door openings. I opted to use this"semi kit" to construct my model of theRobertsdale station. The roof providedin the FEBT kit was also paper, designedto be folded into the shape of the sta-tion's distinct hip roof. I chose to replacethe paper roof with the same Evergreenstanding seam roofing (#4522) that Iused on the Company Store. The newroof gave the station a much morerealistic appearance. The roof was alsopainted a zinc chromate red.

One of the interesting details on thisstructure is the operating order board onthe station roof. The order board haspaddles that show either red (for stop)or white (for all clear), as well as a lampon the top of the signal with red andgreen jewels. For additional realism, Iadded details to the bay window wherethe scale operator worked. I reduced aphoto of the EBT dispatcher's office atOrbisonia station, glued it to a smallpiece of sheet styrene, and inserted ithalf an inch behind the station windows.A scale figure was added between thewindows and the office background,giving the operator an appropriate work-place. Here is a photo of the Robertsdalestation in my prototype scene.
