President’s Message

With summer finally arriving after relatively no spring weather,  I wish all our sheltie

folks the best of luck this season with performance and conformation events.

I would like to thank the Ontario South section on hosting a great 2018 national in May

in Ancaster. We are still looking for other sections to step up for 2020. Your executive

will be discussing the possibility of allowing nationals to coincide with all breed shows

as entry numbers continue to go down in all aspects of our sport.

2018 is an election year for CSSA. Nomination forms can be found in the newsletter. The

deadline for nominations is August 1st, with ballots being mailed out in later September

for a November 1st return.

If you wish to step up and help or know of others who might do so then please

nominate. As always, all positions across the country are open. We need support from

our members.

Thank you to all who continue to support our newsletter and I hope you enjoy our

national issue.

Glen Stark, President

Editor’s Message

I hope you all enjoy this issue of the newsletter. Wow - look at all the beautiful Shelties!

I very much missed being in attendance - the first time I have missed our National in

more than a decade.

In this issue you will find information about the upcoming elections, and the nomination

form for executive positions. You can also access the nomination form any contacting

me at [email protected] or by accessing the PDF file at http://

JUDGE’S COMMENTS - 2018 NATIONAL SPECIALTY

Dianne Hawes

Best In Specialty Show: Ch Laureate Invincible

This dog is one of the finest Shelties I have seen in decades. He immediately draws the eye and is indeed hard to look away from, so much pleasure is gained from looking at him. He excels in type, with a lean, smooth, light head carried on a lovely naturally arched neck. His structure puts me in mind of Secretariat, resulting in clean, strong, sweeping movement which is a joy to behold from every direction. He is both elegant and balanced, and his true Sheltie expression fairly shines, especially when he is gazing at his owner. It was a great pleasure to award him Best in Specialty Show.

Best Of Opposite Sex: Ch Laureate K Syrah Syrah

This small, wonderfully balanced little orange sable bitch was the perfect complement to my Best of Breed, since she embodies the Standard’s definition of femininity. Her head is quite smooth and clean, her eye sweet, and her movement is lovely. So much quality in a beautiful small package!

Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best Puppy in Breed: Ennismoor’s McClelland

This lovely Senior Puppy Dog, a sable in full bloom, has a smooth head which is very pleasing both from front and side view, with a strong filled muzzle and finish, smooth transition to backskull, and a pleasing expression. His arched neck leads down to a good front structure, which is balanced by an equally good rear that never toed out. He stood well naturally, and covered ground well and cleanly. He made a beautiful picture, handled himself very well, and his movement tipped the scales in his favour in a quality Winners class, and again for Best of Winners.

Reserve Winners Dog: Laureate Opus One

From the 12-18 Month class, this beautiful sable boy has a smooth muzzle and sweet face. He stands well, was quite clean going and coming, and particularly excels in balance in every way. I especially loved his moderation. He is littermate to the Best of Opposite Sex Bitch.

Winners Bitch: Sunway Kate Spade

A beautiful blue bitch from Open Blue, she was crammed with virtues. She moved nicely especially from the side, has a lovely face, very smooth head with sweet feminine expression, good bone, and was in beautiful condition. Her clear blue colour was the icing on the cake.

Reserve Winners Bitch: Bonnyville Nitelatches Nirvana

Also coming from my Open Blue class, this moderate young clear blue girl was quite statuesque, with a lean clean backskull and very pretty expression, her head elevated on an arched neck, her body length balanced. She made a very classy picture. In addition, she moved very nicely especially in the rear.

Select Dog: Ch Laureate Who Knew

This shaded sable dog has especially good balance and bone, with a smooth filled muzzle, lean head with good planes and flat topskull, and pleasing eye. His movement is quite clean, and his outline is beautiful, with all parts in proportion to the whole. He is truly “all of a piece.”

Select Bitch/Best Veteran: GCh Dynstar Emelina

From the 10 Years & Over Veteran Bitch class, this beautiful 13 year old sable girl fairly shone! Her lean head, beautiful body and outline and her far reaching movement make her a standout at any age. And her zest for life makes her irresistible. She was a wonderful sight to behold, and it was a pleasure to judge her. She was a crowd favourite as she smiled her way to Select Bitch.

Award Of Merit: Ch Divine’s Ice Crystal

This moderate silvery bi-blue bitch was a beautiful compact package, very feminine and with a great little body and pretty head, very sweet expression and good movement in all directions.

Award Of Merit: Ch Golden Hylite’s The Deliverance

This young dog has remarkable maturity for his age, with a well developed body and a head which is lean and has good planes. His eye was pretty, and his movement was quite good. His dark red coat contributed to a well finished overall picture.

CSSA CODE OF ETHICS The CSSA Fanciers Inc (the Canadian Shetland Sheepdog Association) considers these as guidelines for ethical dog-related practices in the areas of breeding, buying, selling and exhibiting the Shetland Sheepdog. Membership in this Association assumes a responsibility above and beyond the requirements set out in the By-Laws and Code of Ethics.

1. Members shall promote friendship and cooperation among breeders, owners, and exhibitors of Shetland Sheepdogs and assist them for the benefit of the breed.

2. Members shall not speak on behalf of the Canadian Shetland Sheepdog Association unless granted permission by its Executive.

3. Members shall strive to educate, or direct toward resources that can educate, any novice owner who wishes to become involved with breeding and/or showing of the breed.

4. Members shall be familiar with and agree to abide by all Canadian Kennel Club rules and regulations including registration of litters, individual dogs, transfers of ownership and maintenance of accurate records of breeding, pedigrees, and sales.

5. Members shall not sell or supply any dogs or stud services/brood matrons to pet stores, wholesalers, raffles, lotteries, auctions, flea markets, laboratories (unless sanctioned by the CSSA) or as give-away prizes.

6. Members shall not place their own dogs using a Rescue Service.

7. Members shall provide adequate shelter, nutrition, socialization, veterinary care and exercise for their dogs. They shall also make sure that their dogs are maintained in a safe and sanitary environment.

8. Members shall word advertisements so as not to be misleading or misrepresent themselves or their dogs.

9. The overall objective of a member's breeding program shall be to meet the Canadian Kennel Club's standard for the Shetland Sheepdog, and to produce happy, healthy puppies with good temperaments, whether for pet, performance or show. Whenever possible, all breeding stock shall be screened prior to breeding for genetic disorders commonly found in the breed.

10. Breeders shall consider the age, health, and length of time from the bitch's last litter before they breed and shall determine if there is adequate time available to properly socialize new puppies. No bitch should be bred before she has reached twelve months of age, and at breeders discretion not after her eighth birthday,

11. Breeders shall do their best to see that any dog discharged from their care will go to a home that will adequately provide for the health and welfare for the dog, and shall be discriminating in the placement of breeding stock.

12. All contracts, agreements, and guarantees shall be in writing and include all terms agreed upon by the parties at the time of signing. When placing a pet quality dog, a Non-Breeding Agreement should be used. All terms of any signed agreement, contract, or guarantee shall be honored in full.

13. Breeders shall provide purchasers with written details as to the care and welfare of the dog. Permanent identification of dogs, a record of vaccination and a litter pedigree shall accompany each dog before it leaves the premises. It is recommended that puppies shall not be placed before 8 weeks of age, and until having initial immunization.

14. Members shall accept full responsibility for their breeding practices and shall take back any of their dogs whose owner can no longer care for the dog, or shall assist in re-homing said dog, or shall provide financial support to a CSSA recognized Rescue Organization.

15. Failure to abide by this Code of Ethics, and upon proof of such failure, shall result in immediate suspension of CSSA privileges and/or possible termination of membership.

Director’s Report - BC/NWT/Yukon: Joanne Howe

This year I was fortunate enough to travel with Donna Roadhouse and Petra Skapa to represent BC at the CSSA National in Ancaster, Ontario. It was very exciting to put faces to names and to see some very beautiful dogs. Our quick trip to Ontario went without a hitch. We had a wonderful home (AirBnB) with a yard for the dogs that we stayed at in Hamilton and also had the opportunity to have a visit to the home of Bonnie Rector of Highledge Shelties. We got to cuddle puppies and admire the beautiful dogs owned by Bonnie. Big thanks to

all that worked so hard to make the National happen and a special thanks to Linda James for the creation of our beautiful fascinators worn for the National Specialty Show.

Avoca Shelties – Deborah Innes

March saw us take a road trip to the dog show in Prince Albert, Sask; where Nevada (CH Cincerlee Avoca Winter Sonnet) was awarded Select Bitch. This completed her Grand Championship. At the end of March, China (Ch Avoca’s Asian Treasure) and Urban (CH Attridge Urban Legend) presented us with a lovely litter of six puppies.  And not to be left out Hunter (BISS GCH Agile Dreamweaver CGN RN) and I traveled to Washington State to compete in our first AKC Scent Detection Trial. Hunter qualified in six out of eight elements; earning one First and two Third placements.

Tresta Shelties – Petra Skapa

Introducing Tyler, Belmark Tresta Aerosmith out of BISS Grd Am/Can Ch Barwood Sound Sensation AOM ROM x Am/Can Ch Belmark Ya Given Me Fever.  Tyler placed 2nd in his senior puppy class at his debut at Canadian Nationals in May.  He then went on to three back to back Best of Winners.  We are excited about this young sable on the west coast.

CoastalView Shelties – Judy Tulloch

These two pups now  live in Quebec in show homes.      We are so very proud of  Icy’s  Daughter  *Hillary*  AM GCH Can CH CoastalView  Blueberry Hill  AOM,    as she received an AOM at the ASSA this year and also just finished up to earn her AM GCH.  Special Thank You’s  to Karen Linkletter & Lyn Krivanek & to her wonderful handlers  for all they have done for Hillary.   Attending a few shows here on the Island our Bi Blue Girl *Gemma*  CoastalViews Champagne On Ice  is coming along very nicely and is  half way to her Can CH.(HTAD II-s) and Level 1 on Ducks (HTAD I-d) At the age of 9 he will now retire from herding sheep, but will continue to train and trial on ducks.

Avoca Conspirito Apple Blossom HT “Jazz” earned her CKC HT (Herding Tested). She is my little tri devil who is still working on self-control around the sheep, but we are very excited about the herding future of this little spitfire.

Our SSCBC Speciality is coming up in about 2 weeks so we are looking forward to that being held here on the Island this year in Nanaimo.     Wishing everyone safe travels to and from the shows this summer.  Ty  Mz Juty   CoastalView

 Madselin Shelties – Susan Carbert

At the end of Jan in Calgary, Ab, I put a championship on Glenmorris One Thing Remains, bred by Ann Elliott. In Feb at Chilliwack, with the help of Brenda Foster and Corrine Rainsforth as I had torn a tendon in my leg, we put a championship on Longhaul Madselin Dream On bred by Karen Brearly, and her son Madselin Always Dreaming picked up 3 pts and 3 Best Puppy in Groups. In May I had to send Madselin Always Dreaming and his sister Madselin While U were Sleeping with Shannon Sheer as my leg was not any better, and Shannon put a championship on both 10 month old puppies with a Best of Breed 3 days in a row with Madselin While U Were Sleeping from the Sr puppy class and a group 4th over some really pretty specials. These puppies did so well for us!

At the Chilliwack shows. New Ch Longhaul Madselin Dream On finished with a BB from the classes and a group 2nd I have two pretty bi blue girls sired by Am Ch Homewood My Hero out of Best Puppy in National Speicalty and multiple puppy group winning Ch Madselin Tropicana that are getting ready to hit the show ring now.Susan Carbert Madselin Shelties perm reg

It has been an exciting few months here at Conspirito. Our beautiful co-owned (myself and Petra Skapa) Am Ch/Can GCH Tresta Giselle now sports the coveted ROMC behind her name. Thanks to a co-bred litter (Linda Byron & Petra Skapa) producing 4 champions and our own co-breedings (myself and Petra) producing 2 more champions. We are hopeful that a few more are yet to be shown and finished. GiGi is now retired and living in a forever home.

Director’s Report - Saskatchewan - Donna Lewis

Saskatchewan is alive and well with wonderful Shelties and owners attending many events Agility, Obedience, Rally O and Conformation and being successful while having fun.

What a beautiful summer it has been. We have finally had rain, long waited for after last years drought. Everything is green, and the dust isn’t settling in the Sheltie coats like it did last year. The Saskatoon and Area Shetland Sheepdog Association had their annual Specialty in May in Saskatoon and it was very successful as always. Its nice to have that Specialty to look forward to each year. This was in conjunction with the Hub City all breed shows and trials and the Saskatoon Working and Herding Specialty. Congratulations to the winners! Have a great summer! Donna Brags. Donayne- Donna Lewis. Ch. Donayne’s Make a Wish- Jasmine ( AM Can Ch. Attridge Moves Like Jagger x Ch. Mystic Ba Da Bling ) made her ring debut at the SASSA Specialty, where she won her class in juvenile sweeps and the Working and Herding Specialty where she was  WB BW for a 5 point major win. Then on to The Regina Kennel and Obedience club shows where she was WB and BW two shows finishing her championship with 11 points, all from the senior puppy class. Jasmine is co owned / trained and handled by Joyce Baker.Jasmine is in training for Rally O and Agility. I entered Shenley, Ch. Donayne’s Blue Suede Shoes RN RA in the SASSA Specialty. She was Best Veteran In Specialty from the 9+ class with her grandson  Ch. Borealis Donayne Lonestar PCD CD SJATD winning the 7-9class and runner up. Thank you sweeps judge Joyce Woolridge.  Lonestar was Best Veteran in Specialty the next day in the Working and Herding Specialty with Shenley winning the 9+ class again and runner up. They had a great time.   Shenley was entered in a local CKC Agility trial in May as a Vet and qualified in two runs. At 11 years old she still rocks it! We are also pleased to announce a lovely litter of two, from Am Can Ch Attridge Urban Legend X Ch Mystic Ba Da Bling. We look forward to watching them grow.

Alberta Director’s Report - Norma Jeanne Pohl

Well we are told that summer is just around the corner – but for most of us in the western

provinces – it has been difficult to decide which season we are really in!! Alberta had a brief

encounter with really warm weather and then we were back in “winter – like” temperatures!

Many parts of our great country have been in turmoil weather wise – do hope everyone is safe

and well.

Congratulations to all our Canadian Sheltie friends who attended the American Shetland Sheepdog National .Canada

was well represented with some fantastic dogs. Again Congratulations everyone!

Congratulations as well – to all who attended the CSSA National. Thank you to the hard working committee that hosted

the event.

And now for a little Alberta News -

WillowGlyn News- Yvonne Halkow

First two shows of the season were quite successful.  Attended Hub City, SASSA and Saskatoon Working Herding

shows May 4th through 6th with Jazz, WillowGlyn All That Jazz, for his first show.  He was WD twice and BW once

resulting in a new champion title. I also showed Teagan,  Prairiemist Envy Moi, for Barb Selby who got 8 points, 5

of which were from taking BW at the SASSA Specialty!

I then attended Regina Kennel Club shows May 18th through 21st, with Adam, Prairiemist WillowGlyn La Mure,

who was also at his first show and came away with his championship also.  His sister Allie, Prairiemist WillowGlyn

Allure, started out not walking on leash and progressed to taking reserve on the last day!

Congratulations to sister Teagan, who finished in Regina and picked up 3 Selects towards her grand

championship.

We have a few exciting breedings planned for this year so hope to have more positive news in the future!

From Kim Boyes—

I have some news to share.  Spryte, Spark and I had a great time at the AAC Alberta Agility Regional

Championships this past weekend. Both girls finished on the podium! Spryte (AGMCh Dynstar Mythical Creature

CDX XP RAE SHDM AGSC CGN) won the 16" division and Spark (AGMCH HyperHounds All Fired Up CD XP RE AGSC

CGN) took second place in the 12" division.

Many of our Alberta Sheltie exhibitors are at the NACA shows in Edmonton this weekend ( June 1-4th ) . I wish them all

“good luck “and most of all “ have fun “ ! I’m at home awaiting an exciting litter of Sheltie puppies !

Yours in Shelties – HAPPY SUMMER!
