ACADEMIC VISIT TO

PERAK

In conjunction with 3 Minute Thesis

competition national level that will be

held in Universiti Teknologi Petronas

(UTP), Graduate Students’

Association (GSA) held an academic

visit to UTP and historical sites around

Perak. In UTP, GSA members were

welcomed by UTHM alumni, now a

lecturer in UTP, Dr. Azlan Ahmad and

UTP’s Post Graduate Student Council

(PGSC). The participants had the

chance to visit several high end

technology laboratories in UTP as well

as their magnificent library. Besides

that, participating GSA members also

took an adventurous visit to one of the

famous caves in Perak; Gua

Tempurung, and Kellie’s Castle; a

historical monument in Batu Gajah,

Perak. This visit had broaden the

network of GSA to other postgraduate

societies in Malaysia, and we hope for

further collaborations in future.

Graduate Students’ Association (GSA)

went to UTP as supporter to the three

UTHM representatives competing in

this competition. The event was held

at Centre for Excellence in Teaching

and Learning (CeTAL), UTP and

attended by students and

academician from various public and

private universities in Malaysia. All

participants are PhD candidates who

were required to present their

research work within three minutes.

Three categories were at stake

includes engineering, social science,

and science and technology.

ACADEMIC COFFEE SESSION

PARTICIPANTS: ± 40 people

For the first time, Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) UTHM collaborated with

Post Graduate Student Society (PGSS) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

to organize a postgraduate forum. The forum was called Academic Coffee

Session: Sharing Local and International Postgraduate Experience. It was

attended by graduate students in both universities. The participants obtained

valuable knowledge from the sharing session ‘Your Thesis Your Avatar’ before

hearing the postgraduate experiences by the invited panels. The forum was

moderated by GSA President, Mr. Anbia Adam, and the panels were Dr. Nazri

Bajuri (UTM lecturer, Oxford graduate), Dr. Jaysuman Puspanathan (UTM

lecturer, local graduate), Ms. Adawiyah Zayadi (GSA Secretary, UTHM student),

and Mr. Ibrahim Gambo (UTM international student).

When doing research, most students

have to deal with a lot of data, and

analysing the data could be a hassle

sometimes. This has been the motivation

for Graduate Students’ Association (GSA)

UTHM and Mechanical Postgraduate

Association (MePA) UTHM to jointly

organize workshop on utilizing Origin Pro,

PRO-ORIGIN WORKSHOP

a data analysing and graphing software. This workshop was presented by Dr.

Nor Fazillah binti Talib, and facilitated by GSA and MePA members. The

participants learnt how to install the software and the basic interface of the

software. Participants also learnt the tips and tricks on how to analyse data and

tabulate the data into various kinds of plots and graphs.

REFLECTION: Collaborating with Micro

Pollutant Research Centre (MPRC),

Graduate Students’ Association (GSA)

UTHM organized two sharing sessions

in a day. The first session was

Nanotechnology for Environmental

Remediation, delivered by GSA

secretary, Ms. Adawiyah Zayadi. She

introduced the audience to the world of

nanotechnology and how it is used to

fight the pollutant invading our

environment. The second session was

‘The World Outside the Lab’ by Prof. Dr.

Abu Khari bin A’ain, the director of

Insituted for Integrated Engineering

(I2E), UTHM. In his talk, he took the

audience, whom mostly are

postgraduate students on the truth that

there is a bigger world awaits the

students out there to be explored.

CSR Future CXO

Program

ORGANIZER: GSA UTHM & KEJORA

DATE: 29th - 30th August 2018

Future CXO program is a corporate social

responsibility (CSR) program with an

approaches to up bringing UTHM branded

as choice for youth future. The school kids

from various rural area had been given

inspiration and motivation to determine

their dream. The objectives of this

program had been achieved by given

motivational talks, introducing course

available in UTHM, help them to build

teamwork and soft skills. The program

successful when lecturers and staffs gave

fully commitment to spread the knowledge

and positives vibes during the program.

The school kids had chance to explore

some of faculty such as Robotic

Laboratory, Aeronautics Laboratory,

Electrical laboratory and Geology

Laboratory. They stayed at PERWIRA

hostel in Parit Raja to resume some

activities at night with a forum. In the

forum, they learn about teamwork.
