based His constant presence. The Apostle Paul lists encour-aging others among the gifts of the Holy Spirit in Romans 12:8, and the writer of He-brews names encouraging one another as the central reason we need to faithfully meet together (see Hebrews 10:25). In Harvest Network (HNI) we take our call to encourage one another very seriously. Encouraging one another is one of the central purposes of our six Fall HNI Regional Retreats on the theme, “Running the Race that Is Set Before Us.” Today I am en-couraging you not to neglect the care of your own soul or the responsibility to encour-age your fellow HNI mem-bers. I hope to see you at one of our remaining regional retreats so that we can en-courage one another!

WE ARE ALL RUNNING A MARATHON An Invitation from Presiding Overseer Jim Anderson

I consider my life worth noth-ing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

This year’s theme for Har-vest Network’s regional retreats will center on this great analogy. We will look at how we discern the path the Lord progressively re-veals for our unique race. How we can discover and maintain a healthy pace re-membering this is a mara-thon, not a sprint. We will

By definition, all of Christ’s servants are running a marathon. The

Apostle Paul compares a believer’s lifetime of minis-try to running a race in Acts 20:24, I Corinthians 9:24, Galatians 2:2, 5:7 and II Timothy 4:7. The writer of Hebrews also uses this beautiful analogy in He-brews 12:1. Paul made it clear in Acts 20:24 that the great passion of his life was finishing his race well. He declares:

talk about avoiding the things that can trip us up: sin, Satan and even good alternative paths. Finally, we will touch on the fact that most of us are actually run-ning a relay race. To whom will you hand the baton when your laps are complet-ed? Let’s run with endurance the race that the Lord sets be-fore us! I urge you to come away to be renewed and en-couraged in your race and cheer others on in complet-ing theirs.

WHY COME TO A REGIONAL RETREAT?

RELATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: These smaller events are uniquely sized to permit relationships to grow so we are never isolated. NETWORKING: These regional events allow time to build relationships with people near enough to you to make a difference in tough times and to support one another with diverse gifts. INTERACTIVE LEARNING: There can be much more interactive teaching and learning in a smaller gathering. Our goal is to have a third to a half of our teaching time be given to interaction and discussion. PERSONAL MINISTRY: Leaders need ministry that we often don’t receive, because we are so committed to and busy taking care of others.

In April 2017, they issued a call to Pastor Tom Herbert to become their new Lead Pastor. In the call-ing process, they were introduced to the benefits of becoming a member church of Harvest Net-work International. As an inde-pendent church, the opportunities for partnership with other like-minded churches and ministries was very appealing along with the spiritual covering and legal protec-tion afforded to member minis-tries of HNI. On Sunday, September 10, 2017, Freedom Community Church was officially received as the newest member church of Harvest Net-work International by Presiding Elder, Jim Anderson.

Located in Shrewsbury, PA, the church was founded 17 years ago by a small group of Spirit-filled believers who wanted to establish a new work in the southern York County area. The church is uniquely positioned to reach a community that is growing rapidly with many new families moving

This is the first time HNI has ever hosted an event on the west coast. If you are located in these areas, please make every effort to join us for this inaugural weekend. We also had several guests from the York area who enjoyed the weekend and are considering becoming a part of the HNI movement. The fall retreats have developed into a key ingredi-ent as we seek to maintain our high

value on relational care within Har-vest Network. This year, we have added two new regions to our an-nual retreat schedule. The North-east Region held a retreat at Em-manuel Church in York, PA on September 8-9. Pastor Jim Herbert and his wife, Jill, graciously hosted the event and were assisted by Pas-tor Tom and Judy Herbert. A won-derful time of worship, teaching,

Stephen Pederson Overseer of Jail Ministry Harvestime Outreach Church Hudson, WI Stephen and Dawn Pederson have been

married 33 years. They have four children, and their third grandchild is on the way. Stephen was ordained through HNI in July. “I feel God is calling me to go deeper with him in ministry. I see HNI as a great fellow-ship of like-minded believers to hold me accountable, encourage me and provide resources. Hopefully I can provide that as well.” As a tentmaking minister, Stephen is a licensed realtor (which he sees as a ministry in itself) and oversees a jail ministry. “I preached at a Mexico prison on a mission trip in 2000, and it opened my eyes to the conditions of those who are incarcerated. I joined the jail ministry shortly after that. I long to help them rise up into the people God intended them to be.” He also is the day-time chaplain at Operation Christmas Child’s Minneap-olis Processing Center. “For five weeks, I get to share the Word one-on-one and in small groups with volun-teers and staff members, many of whom don’t know Jesus. We see a number of salvations every year.” Stephen loves traveling, both with his family for vacation and all over the world on mission trips. He also loves hiking, bicycling and water sports. “I think God speaks to us profoundly through nature. I used to be an avid sailor. Whenever I see a sailboat, I wish I were out on the water.” He loves to recommend Living in the Light of Eternity by KP Yohannan to help put worldly and eternal matters in balance. “It’s a powerful book.”

Steven Barry Lay Minister Kipton Community Church Kipton, OH Steven and Madonna Barry have been

married 25 years and have two young adult children. In August, Steven transferred his ordination to HNI. The network he’d been part of for eight years had changed over time, becoming less relational. When the Barrys joined Kipton Community Church, Lead Pastor Lee Stull told Steven about HNI. “I decided HNI would be a good organization to be involved with. Everybody I’ve been in contact with in HNI has left an impression on me,” Steven said. “I’m in between ministries and starting a Bible study in a tiny town, Castalia, while hoping to pastor a church again.” His central passion is to see people get saved and grounded. “I’ve seen so many cases of people getting saved and then falling away.” In fact, Steven wrote a six-month Bible study to help ground new believers in the faith. “I once started with two women and the group grew to 50—and I didn’t invite anyone. After I went through it with one group, they wanted to do it again. That surprised me.” He also wrote The Barry Patch, a collection of humorous stories about growing up in the 1950s. When he’s not busy in ministry, Steven loves to hunt ducks and geese. “I used to shoot rabbit and squirrel, but they’re a pain to clean, so I gave that up.”

PRAYER REQUESTS

Jamie and Melanie Daegling who are mis-sionaries in Mexico at River of Glory Minis-tries have encountered many rain and hail storms throughout the months of July and August, leaving their facility flooded with hail and wind damage. They have lost clothing and household items due to roof leakage and cracked walls.

Please pray for Pastor Brian Johnson from Minnetonka, MN, as he is battling stage four cancer which is in his lung, liver and co-lon. They are believing for complete healing.
