OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Ponca Tribe Grants and Compliance Office

The Ponca Tribe Grants and Compliance Office received notification that we were

awarded the Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program Grant in the amount of $345,000

at the end of September. The TSASP grant provides funding directly to tribes, tribal or-

ganizations, and nonprofit tribal organizations to create, maintain, and expand sustain-

able sexual assault services programs and activities within Indian country and Alaska

Native villages. Tribal agencies, organizations, and nonprofits provide critical and cultur-

ally relevant services that are specifically responsive to the needs of sexual assault vic-

tims within tribal communities. The TSASP Grant will provide much needed services.

In the last few months, the Grants Office has also received the Basic Library Services

Grant, The VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) Grant, MIPPA (Medicare Improvements for Pa-

tients and Provider’s Act) Grant and the THPO (Tribal Historic Preservation Office) Grant.

We have several other grants we have applied for and are awaiting notification.

A big project that the Grants Office received and has participated in is the USDA Com-

munity Facilities Grant. This grant was awarded to renovate the Ponca Tribe Library lo-

cated in the Cultural Building. With funding through this grant, the Tribe will be able to

provide a space for cultural items and memorabilia, tutoring services, a television room

for movies to be shown, various activities for tribal members to participate in and a

more comprehensive library selection. A grand opening will be scheduled in the near

future for all tribal members to come and see the newly renovated Ponca Tribe Library

and Museum.

The objective of the Grants and Compliance Office is to apply for grants for needed ser-

vices for the Ponca Tribe. Compliance of grant requirements is also a major part of our

office duties. We hold monthly Program Director’s Meetings so that the different tribal

programs will know what the others are doing and can work together to coordinate pro-

gram efforts when appropriate. Please feel free to visit the Ponca Tribe Grants Office.

lar area are encouraged to come to the Education & Training Office in the Dana Knight Social Service

while on the program.

up an Adult WIOA application at the Dana Knight Bldg. from the receptionist at the front desk.

offer assistance to those out of school youth that need GED assistance or assistance to remain in

school. To date the program is assisting those Ponca Tribal students that are enrolled in the GED pro-

gram at the Pioneer Technology Center and those students enrolled in college in the Kay County area.

The program is year- long and is accepting applications from those individuals 14 to 24 years old that

14TH NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG

VOLUME 3, ISSUE 5

14th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the BIA-OJS, Pawnee Agency,

Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give

the public its 14th opportunity in 7 years to prevent pill abuse and theft by rid-

ding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted pre-

scription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to BIA Police Department at 123

White Eagle Drive. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only

pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last April Americans turned in 450 tons (900,000 pounds) of prescription drugs

at almost 5,500 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,200 of its state and

local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 13 previous Take Back events,

DEA and its partners have taken in over 8.1 million pounds—more than 4,050

tons—of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines

that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and

abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are

the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies

show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and

friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are

now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—

flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential

safety and health hazards.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the Octo-

ber 28 Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website

https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/ or go to the BIA

Police Department.
