In addition, Shriners International is revisiting its corporate strategic plan, utilizing the fez as a more recognizable image (replacing the scimitar, star and crescent, which have been used since 1872 as the symbol of the fraternity), modernizing the look of promotional and internal materials and developing strat- egies to encourage younger members to join the fraternity. When people think of the Shrinersorganization, “modern” and con-temporary” probably aren’t

words that come readily to mind in de-scribing the Shriners—at least it hasn’tbeen the case in the past.

In the last two years, a national mar-keting and branding campaign brought anew awareness of Shriners Hospitals forChildren, the fraternity’s official philan-thropy, to millions of people across NorthAmerica. Now it is the fraternity’s turn.Shriners of North America, henceforthknown as Shriners International, is em-barking on an effort to update the lookand image of the fraternity, and the me-dia and general public are noticing.

Just last month, the Chicago News-Tribune noted the contemporary ap-proach the organization is using to appealto younger audiences, citing as an ex-ample the Justin Timberlake ShrinersHospitals for Children Open, the LasVegas stop on the PGA TOUR. The pop-culture icon joined forces with severalpopular entertainers, including the JonasBrothers, Rihanna and 50 Cent that sameweek, for a benefit concert that raisedmore than $1 million for Shriners Hospi-tals for Children, as well as garneringextensive coverage from major media andentertainment outlets, including Peopleand In Style magazines and Entertain-ment Tonight.

In addition, Shriners International isrevisiting its corporate strategic plan, utilizing the fez as a more recognizableimage (replacing the scimitar, star andcrescent, which have been used since1872 as the symbol of the fraternity),modernizing the look of promotional andinternal materials and developing strat-egies to encourage younger members tojoin the fraternity. The latter includespartnering with college fraternities toeducate members about the Shriners fra-ternity, and local Shriners are offeringmore family-oriented activities.

Local Shriners are also being encour-aged to create interest groups, or units, that appeal to younger people. In the 4th chapter of the letter ofPaul to the Philippians we read,

“Finally, Brethren, whatever istrue, whatever is honorable, what-ever is just, whatever is pure, what-ever is lovely, whatever is gracious,if there is any excellence, if thereis anything worth of praise, thinkabout these things.”

Paul is telling us to maintain apositive attitude to the world andto seriously think about all that isnoble in it.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Aman is what he thinks about allday long.” Norman Vincent Peale

said, “Change your thoughts andyou change your world.” MarcusAurelius, the Roman emperor (161-180) said “A man’s life is what histhoughts make it.”

I say our Shrine is what wethink it is. We need to “forget whatlies behind and straining forwardto what lies ahead” (Phil. 3:13)press forward for the goal of in-creasing our membership, and in-volvement in the community andthe support of our fellow nobles. All this is possible with a positiveattitude and with God’s help.

Since the first of the year, wehave lost $3,750 in annual ad-

vertising revenue. That’s about15% of our total revenues at theend of 2008. Our highest numberof contract renewals come in Marchand October, so I suspect we mayhave more bad news from furthercancellations next month. Like allbusiness profit centers, we may bein for some fiscal adjustments.

A year ago in this column, Iannounced that the new ShrineHospital Corporation Style Manualfor use in creating all Shrine pub-lications had been created in aneffort to help all Shriner communi-cations and publications becomeconsistent. There is a copy of themanual on our Website: <http://w w w . s a h i b s h r i n e . o r g / s h c _stylebook_080220.pdf>. If you area contributor to the Reporter, I’dstill appreciate it if you becamefamiliar with these styles, and in-corporate them in your submis-sions. It seems most of you areignoring this publication. Pay par-ticular attention to how to refer toa Shrine organization on page 10.There are also sections on how weshould all refer to our Shrine Hos-pitals for Children patients andtheir afflictions. The two most fre-quent errors are using the words

‘temple’ and ‘center’ when refer-ring to Sahib Shriners and usingthe word ‘crippled’ when referringto our hospital children.

The Shriners and the Masonicteam that put on the 13th AnnualRusty Mason Reunion did a greatjob of refreshing memories of the100+ Master Masons in atten-dance. This year the Sahib PastMasters Unit joined the team. Theprogram is getting better each year.Event producer Jerry Goacher hasassembled Brothers that reallycare about the program meetingits mission. The one thing missing,in my opinion, is we don’t publicizethe event well enough in the localmedia. Most area leaders agreethere are in excess of 2,500 Ma-sonic sojourners living in our area(Masons who belong to Masonicbodies in another state, and havenever pursued becoming active inour district,) the goal of the RustyMason always was to try to reachthese Masons and get them to beinvolved locally and to perhaps joinour area Masonic bodies. I havetalked with Sahib leaders aboutthis, and there is support for addi-tional advertising monies, I hopethe team will try to do more mediapromotion prior to the next RustyMason Reunion.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles and ladies,

The 2009 Sahib Potentates Ball was a genuine success. Approximately 300 were inattendance and it was a gala evening. The Sahib auditorium was decorated elegantlyand it was fit for a King and a Queen. Thank you to Lady Donna LaBell and her fantas-tic committee. Our own Marian Cox played in the atrium as nobles and guests arrivedand added a touch of class to the festivities. The Sahib Nobleman provided outstandingdance music.

Noble Jerry Goacher did the rendition of the Cripple Child that lead to this year’s theme“We put children first.” Lady Joyce Goacher then joined Noble Jerry and they both sangthe theme song “We Put Children First.” I am sure you would all agree they performedbeautifully. Then of course came the funny skit by Joyce and Jerry which almost hadpeople rolling in the aisles. We certainly have great talent at Sahib.

The noble who orchestrated this event and was the Master of Ceremony at the Ball wasPast Potentate Ill. Sir Dale LaBell. Thank you Dale for being part of this weekend andmaking it a tremendous success.

Lady Peggy and I enjoyed a most memorable weekend. We will never forget it. Thankyou all nobles and ladies that participated in this 2009 Potentates Ball weekend.

Our membership committees have been working diligently to attract new members to joinSahib. They have already gotten 11 to affiliate, 6 have been restored and 5 have been cre-ated. A grand total 22 for the first six weeks of 2009 .We have a very dedicated membershipchairman in Noble Hugh Quigley. His team of Chief Rabban Don Vos, Treasurer DaleLaBell, PP, Oriental Guide Bill Zurlo and Chief Aide Dick Morris are well focused andare making things happen. Congratulations to the team for all your hard work.

Nobles, our Chanters are in need of your help. The black camel has left them with fewervoices in their unit. They need some voices if they are going to support Sahib with thesinging they have always provided. You do not have to be a professional singer to be inthe unit. Come to their meetings, and volunteer.

Nobles, always remember that we do what we do because: “We Put Children First.”

Yours in the Faith,

Oscar Cloutier, Potentate

Chief Rabban’s notesby Don Vos, [email protected]

I have been named the Recruitment Chairman ofSahib Membership Committee; I take this very

seriously, membership gains for the year 2009, issomething that we have to meet head on. We mustincrease our Membership numbers.

On January 28 we had our annual Rusty Masonevening. Wow, this was a great evening and it helpsus to keep up our Blue Lodge involvement. Therewere quite a few Shriners there; helping to keep uptheir knowledge of the Blue Lodge. It’s quite interest-ing all of the different jurisdictions of Blue Lodgeoperations. In the end, the Florida Grand Lodgeideals were well received. If you desire to come to oneof these, it will be scheduled next year on the last

Wednesday of January. Please let us keep in touchwith all the Blue Lodges in our area.

I was on the sidelines January 31 and witnessedthe raising of four Master Masons of Lodge No. 147.What a glorious time to be at Lodge when MasterMasons are raised. To see four young people becom-ing involved with Blue Lodge was a great experiencefor this Chief Rabban. Watching WM Norman Cyphershand out the new dues cards and with these cardswere membership papers for your Sahib Shrine. Do-ing this is how we can get these new Masons to helpus with the membership. Let us never forget to attendand support our Blue Lodges.

See you in Lodge!

After a busy, busy, busy first two months of 2009,here we go into March with more of the same! We

have some social and other events planned that willbe enjoyed by all.

Let’s keep pulling together to have more noblescoming into the Shrine. It is everyone’s responsibilityto increase our membership. There are other organi-zations looking for new members, but remember, wehave an exclusive feature to offer. We are helping ourchildren be the best they can be through our medicalcare with 22 hospitals, without any charge whatso-

ever to the child or family. No other organization canmatch that convincing point.

One of our newest social venues this year is Mon-day night Bar Bingo, you and your lady can have tacosor hotdogs for supper right at the bar while playing. It is from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and we play ten games atone dollar per game. You may play as many or as fewgames as you wish. The winner gets 50% of what isplayed at each game. This is people-friendly bingowith a lot of laughs and a fun inexpensive nighttogether. Come on down and join us.

The first two months of 2009 are now history.Activities at Sahib have never been busier than

they were the last two months. March and April lookbusy as well.

For those who missed our Potentate’s Ball inFebruary, you really missed a great one. The fullband played dance music throughout the evening forall to enjoy. The meal that our kitchen staff preparedwas the best meal I have had at Sahib. The decora-tions were “top shelf” and a delight for all to see.Congratulations to all who worked so hard to makeour Potentate’s Ball a special evening for all.

March is a full month for the volunteers fromSahib. The Sarasota County Fair, as well as springtraining baseball games, will keep them very busy.Every year Sahib has provided a large group of noblesand ladies to work at both places. I am sure that allthe workers will welcome a slower pace in the monthsthat follow.

Our clubs and units are trying very hard to workcloser with one another. In the past few weeks, ourtwo motorcycle units have merged, and the classic carand model T units have also merged. This shouldprovide a wider base of members to join together forfun and fellowship. Our very fine Chanter unit istrying very hard to reorganize as a concert groupagain. Their membership has declined in recent years, and they hope to revive the interest in the Chanters. They have tentatively scheduled rehearsal times forthe convenience of working members. They now planto rehearse on Monday evenings starting in the fall.If you are interested in becoming a part of thismusical group, please contact the Recorders office foradditional information.

Time to pull out your wallets and look to see if youhave your 2009 membership card from Sahib. If not,the remittance of your dues would be appreciated.

Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

As always, work-ing with all of my fellow Shriners and our outstand-ing friends is a rewarding pleasure. It is this kind ofsupport both for the baseball games and for the just

completed Hospital Days; that make being a Shrinerso worthwhile.

This month we will not be having our dinnerdance; due to the baseball season. Our dinner dancefor April will combine Widow’s Night and Luau. Ourregular monthly board meeting and luncheon will beon March 10 at the American Legion Post 24 inBradenton. I look forward to seeing you there.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Manatee Shrine Clubs biggest project of the yearbegan earlier than usual this year, with the

first ballgame on February 25. This project, atMcKechnie Field, is our biggest moneymaker andallows us to give generous donations to the SahibShrine and many of the Shrines many philanthro-pies. It also increases our clubs camaraderie and weall have a lot of fun. I’m sure that if it were not fun,we would have a lot fewer volunteers. If you desire toget in on the fun as well as promote the Shrine, wewould welcome you at the park.

We had our Valentines Day cruise on Saturday the14th and a relaxing, good time was had by all, as wellas a great buffet. This event will, hopefully, becomean annual event for our club as we who attend, alwayshave a good time! Join us next year!

Our agenda this year includes some fun eventsthat we will be reporting on in the future. We are a

great group of Shriners and ladies who work and playhard.

The baseball appreciation dinner was held onFebruary 11 at Peridia. This great meal of prime ribor salmon with all the fixings including salad anddessert; is one of the ways we can thank those whogiven of their time to help the Manatee Shrine Club,Sahib Shrine and our philanthropies. It was a finemeal and everyone had a great time! Hope to see youthere next year; it only takes six games to qualify.

We meet at Peridia Golf and Country Club thefirst Friday of each month, except for March and Aprilthis year, due to ballgame conflicts. Those months wewill meet on the second Friday! You do not have to bea resident of Manatee County to be a part of the fun;you just need to be a Sahib Shriner! We would love toinclude you in our fun group, just let any memberknow if you want to join!

Greetings all! There has been a small change invenue in this report. As the Motor Corps Scribe, I

have finally been given a job, writing this rag for theReporter. Actually, I think Barry’s fingers were gettingbruised on the tips from too much time at the computerand he needed a break, so here I am. His missives willbe a hard act to follow, as they were always newsy andinformative. So let me take this opportunity to thankhim for the many months he has kept the nobilityinformed on our beloved Motor Corps activities. Thankyou, Barry for ALL you have done and continue to do forthe Corps, Sahib, the Rites and the lodges and Masonryin general. You are one of those rare givers who canhandle Masonic multi-tasking without losing your senseof humor. I am sure that I speak for everyone in theCorps and Sahib in saying that you should be proud ofall you do for our fraternity, and even though it seemsvery inadequate, THANK YOU!!!

Well, I guess we must all be having fun, as this yearseems to be flying by already. Of course, I wasn’t veryinvolved in January as most of you know, but am nowback and doing fine. On a personal note, I would like totake this opportunity to thank every one at Sahib for themultitude of cards and well wishes while I was recuper-ating from a kidney transplant on January 1. It was avery humbling experience to actually see the outpour-ing of concern, and I truly thank you, one and all. I amwell on my way to getting back to normal, if I ever was,but you know what I mean, and hope to be back on myHarley Centennial Shrine Edition “Pearl” white stal-lion before too long.

Hard to believe we are in March already. Februarywas a fast month for the Corps including several differ-ent events attended. Several members trekked over toCocoa Beach on the coldest morning of the year (Thurs-day the 5th) to attend the Winter Session of the FloridaAssociation of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC as it is

affectionately referred to) from the 5th through the 8th.Except for a couple of mechanical problems early on, theweekend was a fun and successful time, which it alwaysis. Sorry I missed it.

Then there was the Corps infamous spaghetti din-ner on Sunday the 15th. Once again Chef Wally and hiscrew of apprentice want-to-be cooks from the MotorCorps and their ladies put on a splendid and delightfulfeast that was attended by many spaghetti lovers fromaround the realm. I do believe that this was the bestbatch of sauce yet, However, I understand that therewas some question about that and we were requested tohave a repeat v-e-r-y soon so it could be properly com-pared. I’ll bet we can swing that too. Thanks to everyonein the Corps and your lovely ladies for your invaluablehelp. There was also a few comments that we alwayslook like we are having too much fun doing it, so nexttime we may have to play that down a bit.

At the time of this writing, the Corps has a couple ofparades coming up towards the end of the month. Onewill be in North Port and the other in Arcadia. In dueform, I am sure that my crystal ball is correct when itinforms me that the Corps and Sahib will be repre-sented and that once again, “too much” fun will be hadby all.

As a reminder, The Corps will be holding its 6thAnnual Poker Run and fun time on Sunday, March 22.One does not have to have a motorcycle to participate.A three or four-wheel mode of transportation is alsovery acceptable. Or, you may simply show up andpurchase a full hand right at the final stop at Sahib andyou will be totally eligible for all the great prizes. Afterthe run is completed there will be music, dancing, lotsof door prizes, the drawing for the Harley Wagon ofCheer (valued at about $500+) plus lots of good food anddrink, and hanging out. It will be a definite great time

SHRINE UNIT NEWSBandsby Mike Ash, [email protected]

This is the month we must sadly bid goodbye toseveral of our winter members; like the Canada

geese, they begin their journey back to the frozennorth by March 31. We will miss them terribly almostimmediately when we assemble for the April 1 StatedMeeting and the April 3 and 4 Sahib Circus perfor-mances. Then, a few days later, we again are on thestage for the Spring Ladies’ luncheon and anotherconcert. That’s quite a schedule to end our seasonwith, especially short handed. In addition to all that, the North Port parade stepped off on February 28;hopefully the snowbirds covered that commitment.(This article was written prior to the parade.) Therealso is a March 14 Arcadia parade that has just beenconfirmed.

I’ve never quite understood why our Circus isscheduled for the month of April after all the snow-birds leave town. It would seem that attendance andrevenue would increase greatly if it was held whenthe greatest number of people was still in residence. But I’m just a dumb musician. I guess those impor-tant decisions are left to more important people.

We have a revised set of by-laws that addressesour unique membership that includes seasonal resi-dents. It was ridiculous to require all members toparticipate in 70% of rehearsals and performanceswhen a large number of them are only in town a fewmonths of the year. That requirement made it impos-sible for snowbirds to be active members, and there-

fore made it impossible for the Band to function if itwas enforced. The new provisions require 70% atten-dance for the time they are in residence locally. Otherless important sections of the by-laws were “tweaked”to make them clearer.

Andy Wright has purchased new stand lights thatwill eliminate the snake pit of cords and extensionplugs that have threatened the safety of Noblemenmusicians navigating on and off the stage. They willalso service the Concert Band when we perform onstage in less than ideal lighting conditions. The moneyfor the purchase was derived from an improvement inTea Dance attendance this season. Hopefully thatattendance trend will continue with the help of somepublicity from the Herald Tribune, and the 20-30people from the Friday afternoon Senior Center crowdthat have followed me to Sahib.

Director Jarrett Miller is diligently rehearsingthe Concert Band for the upcoming gigs. Each re-quires different music so it’s quite a task for him toselect what will work with our depleting instrumen-tation. Now added to the Circus, the Ladies Lun-cheon, the Stated Meetings, parades and the picnic, wehave a joint concert with the Pipes and Drums for whichto prepare. Rehearsals are very intense with no breaks.

We have been blessed with a new alto sax player, clarinetist and drummer to bolster our Concert Bandand we’re grateful for the support of several talentedlocal musicians who sit in when needed.

Board member and equipment manager GerryHall resigned from the board and the Band at ourJanuary board meeting. He cited health issues and adesire to spend more time working with his principalinstrument, the keyboard. He was a very hard workerand will be sorely missed. Former board member andequipment manager, Lloyd Eggers, has agreed toassume some of the duties. Any non-musician mem-ber of Sahib is welcome to join us to help with libraryand equipment. It’s a great unit in which to belong.

Several of our musicians again participated in theannual Windjammers Winter Meet at what once wasthe Airport Holiday Inn. Fortunately, our Tuesdayrehearsal did not conflict with the Windjammer re-cording and performing schedules. Some of us had toleave the Thursday afternoon recording sessions todo the Tea Dance with the Noblemen. Due to theintense playing schedule of a Windjammer Conven-tion, it’s difficult for local people like me to partici-pate in all that’s required.

Hello to all Camel Herders and Sahib Member-ship, it was time to get the grounds beautified

for the Potentate’s Ball on Saturday, February 7. I hadsprayed the weeds around the grounds on January 14to give them time to wither before the work party.

On Saturday, January 24, I scheduled a groundsworkday to get things ready for the ball. I had eighthelpers that worked from 8:00-10:30 a.m. in the chilly44-degree temperature, but the day began to warmnicely. Bill Batten had coffee and pastries availableto keep us warmed. We weeded and raked the frontgardens and the Memorial Garden on the south sideof Sahib, and the hedges were trimmed and shaped.Several oak trees were pruned as well. Blowers wereused to clean the parking lot.

I want to thank my helpers: Bill Batten, DaleLaBell, PP, Phil Mitchell, PP, Fred Phillips, DickHines, Dwight Ridgeway, Norm Cyphers and last, but not least, Lady LaVerne Mims, for their much-appreciated help. All did a good job.

On Sunday, February 1, we had our Annual SuperBowl Party and Camel Herder Initiation. I want to

welcome the five new Camel Herders to the unit:Mike Davenport, Wendy Streight, Rocky Kearney, and Jim and Mary Fletcher, as well as last year’scandidates that went through the Camel HerderRitual, performed by Ill. Sir Oscar Cloutier, JohnMitchell, PP and Phil Mitchell, PP. I want to thankCharles Levan, 33° and Connie Jacobi for setting upthe projector in the main hall, so we had a large screentelevision (approx. 10’ x 10’) to view the football game, and for setting up the surround-sound system. It waslike being inside the stadium watching the game.

We had 26 in attendance for the party, and every-one enjoyed the game, the hotdogs and the trim-mings. A big thanks to Wendy Streight and RockyKearney, Sami and Fred Phillips, Barbara and NorrisWalker, and Patty Hunsberger for their deliciouschili recipes, as well as Mary Margaret and HowardShoup for the barbecue pork. I hope your favoriteteam won the game.

Let’s “Work Together” as a team, because “We PutChildren First.”

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!Wishing you a rainbow, For sunlight after showersMiles and miles of Irish smiles, For golden happy hoursShamrocks at your doorway, For luck and laughter too,And a host of friends that never ends, Each day your whole life through!

March celebrates two Saints; March 1 is St. David’sDay and March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day but first

we should thank all those who helped with HospitalDays in February. This year the Chanters did notorganize any locations but assisted the Gulf ShrineClub to man several locations. It appears it was asuccess. This is the first time, in 15 years, that JimDeverell did not manage the event with the help ofmany Chanters, Brothers and ladies. It is always afun time as well as very gratifying time to have theopportunity to show off and explain Shrinedom to thepublic for a just cause. It is such a pleasure to havethe chance to talk with perfect strangers on a one onone basis about our Shriner’s Hospitals for Childrenand the great strides in advancement of diagnosisand treatment we are making. It is just a great timeand fun for all.

We had another meeting on February 9 to dis-cuss the future and reorganization of our Chanterunit as conducted by Milton Thoene, Sandy Rae andRoland Wilson. During the month of February, weenjoyed the Pipes & Drums, Banjo Band night andother temple events.

Play Ball is the call for March and we encourageall nobles, ladies, Brothers and friends to help withthis event at McKechnie Field. How many of youknow who William Boyd “Deacon” McKechnie is?The answer in next month’s Reporter. We should alldo our best to support the activities of our SahibShrine as well as the individual unit activities as weprogress through another active year. Remember, the success of one reflects upon the success of thewhole and the success of the whole depends uponthe success of each unit and the support of allnobles. Our Divan can’t do it all so let’s get behindthem and give them the support you would wantfrom the nobility if you were in their positions.

We wish a sad, but well-earned, farewell to threetimes Chanter President, Jim Deverell and his newpartner Mary Williams. They will be living in Canadaand South Wales in the future. Since this is Jim’slast time with Sahib Shrine and Florida, we wishthem “bon voyage” as well and hope that maybe, justmaybe, they will find time in the future to pay a visitto Sahib and Florida again.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

We do not know if his lady will be accompanyinghim. The Imperial Potentate’s Lady’s program is tohelp the cleft lip and palate child. Megan Johnson hashad 25 surgeries under this program. Here are ex-cerpts from a letter written by Megan, which willexplain what Shriners have done and are continuingto do for her: “After all my surgeries I will needimplants and covers for my teeth since I am missingabout half my teeth .Insurance will not cover this. Iknow there are many out there with this same story.Families struggling not just so their kids can look likeother kids, but so we can chew our food and speaknormally. Fixing us Cleft Kids is not just about ourlooks. Many of my surgeries were so my face won’tsink. The bones in my face are not in the right placeand they do not support my face.”

Greetings from the Kentucky Colonels of the SahibShrine. The year 2009 is starting to be a super

year with a new slate of officers. With no volunteersaround that we could elect to the presidency, I againassumed the role as president as I did in 2005 and2006. With Colonel Charles M. Levan 33°, unable toassume the role as secretary/treasurer because ofDivan ascendancy protocol, we twisted the arm ofColonel Don Goodman 2008 President to take thereins of secretary and Colonel Herb Mueller to takethe treasurer’s job. Both nobles are stalwart workersof the Kentucky Colonels.

We are going to try several new things this yearincluding varying the locations of the meetings tohaving our toasts with real Kentucky Mint Julips. Many ideas have been discussed to improve the meet-ings and to increase the attendance, one of which is topossibly having day meetings for the people who don’tlike to drive at night. Let us know what your feelingsare; many Shriners that belong to the KentuckyColonels haven’t attended for one reason or anotherand we sure would like to see them again at one of ourmeetings. Come on out and bring your lady, spouse or

friend. Kentucky Colonels who are not members ofSahib Shrine may also attend our meetings, suppersand functions, but cannot become a member untilthey are Sahib Shriners. And we sure will show themhow to become one in a hurry.

The January meeting supper consisted of eitherBaked Pollack or Chicken Parmesan done to perfec-tion. The entertainment consisted of two retired “Fly-ing Fezzes,” Jack Bryant and Sam Upton who talkedof their exploits flying the young patients and theirparents all over the United States during the yearsbefore the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampawas built. This was a very interesting talk especiallythe parts of close calls they had with their aircraft bytwo of the many dedicated airplane pilots with thou-sands of hours under their belts before they retired.

By the time, this is out in the Reporter it will betime for our March meeting. Remember the KentuckyColonels always have fun and we meet the fourthTuesday at 5:00 p.m. for social hour unless advertiseddifferently. Please come out and join us; if you need aride to the meeting call me at 730-3240 or email me.

NOW HEAR THIS: The Ides of March are upon usand spring is not too far down the road.

Thinking of being buried at Arlington NationalCemetery? Good news, sixty-two percent of burials atArlington are now cremations and because of this, anew ninth outdoor structure for entombing crema-tions was opened in December. This columbariumwill hold 6,500 remains. Hang in there until 2011when Arlington will acquire 4.3 acres more of newland that will eventually hold an additional 3,440 inground burial sites.

Want to know how the USG is spending yourmoney? So far, the Iraq War has cost the U.S. $687billion and the Afghanistan War $184 billion The twowars combined now surpass the cost of the VietnamWar by 50%.

The Legion of Honor would like to welcome threenew members, William A. Summerfield, John R.Bohenkamp, and Alessio Ruggiero. Welcome aboard, nobles!

LOH History: My first year as LOH Adjutant(2004) I wrote a letter to Imperial in Tampa andasked them if they could please document which

Shrine unit is the oldest and when it was chartered. They wrote back to me that their records did not havethat information but the Legion of Honor was thoughtto be the oldest Shrine unit. Now you know!

Are you aware that almost the entire currentDivan are members of the LOH? If it wasn’t for theDivan last year at some of the parades we marched inthe LOH would have been in deep trouble and unableto carry the Colors. Thanks Divan nobles! You allstepped in when it really counted.

The LOH is still in search of a 2LT Commander.Step up to the plate soldiers and volunteer to fill thisimportant position. We’ll even give you a free LOHUniform and train you free too. New members areeligible to fill this position so why not volunteer?

The parades that the LOH participates in are opento all members of the LOH. You do not have to be ableto march. You can ride on our LOH trailer or we canalways get you a ride on another unit’s trailer. If youneed a ride to the parade site call LOH CommanderRay Stevens at 751-1296.

Keep in touch.

St. Patrick’s Day is Ireland’s greatest nationalholiday as well as a holy day. The date marks theanniversary of the death of the missionary who be-

came the patron saint of Ireland. It is a happy holidayfor the Irish wherever they may be - Dublin, NewYork City, Boston or San Francisco. The day cel-ebrated with parades, speeches, festive dinners anddances. Green is the color of the day, with thousandsof little cloth shamrocks worn even by those whoseforefathers never touched the shores of Ireland.

It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain towealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner bya group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’sestate. They transported him to Ireland where hespent six years in captivity. During this time, heworked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people.Lonely and afraid he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not inIreland but in the United States.

Irish soldiers serving in the English militarymarched through New York City on March 17, 1762.Along with their music the parade helped the soldiersto reconnect with their Irish roots, well as fellowIrishmen serving in the English army. Suddenly, asSt. Patrick’s Day parades became a show of strengthfor Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event

This year I have been asked to work on MoneyMania and am enjoying meeting the club and unitmembers. Everyone seems enthusiastically behindthis major fundraiser which makes my task easier.

Our entire Divan is involved in membership thisyear by restoration, retention or new membership. Ihave been tasked with restoration and through se-lected nobles; we have been busy contacting thosewho were dropped for non-payment of dues. It hasbecome a humbling experience.

In addition, Paul Tobias asked me to help himwith Sahib’s Annual Spring Picnic on Sunday, March 8and we have been actively speaking to our units fortheir support and participation.

For fun, the units/clubs and Shrine have pre-sented many social activities that are and will con-tinue to be present at the temple. Please join us in asmany activities as you find enjoyable. This is the funpart of Shrinedom.

Summer – and the next Imperial Council Session – will be here be-fore you know it. Shriners and their families and friends are all making plans now to attend the 135th Impe-rial Council Session, which will be held July 5-9, 2009, in San Antonio, Texas. Be sure you’re doing the same – you don’t want to miss the fun and fellowship! Like Shriners International, San Antonio is rich in history and tradi-tion, with activities and attractions to entertain people of all ages. The city boasts a wide assortment of restau-rants, ranging from Tex-Mex to Deep South cuisine. Shopping is also plen-tiful, with outlets, malls, galleries, unique shops and Mexican markets. There are also areas in San Antonio where you can find unique crafts, antiques, local art and south-of-the-border imports. When it comes to attractions, San Antonio has it all: historical sites, including the famous Alamo and four other Spanish missions, art galler-

ies and museums, including the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Witte Museum, which will have an exhibit on the myths and realities of the Wild, Wild West. For those who prefer theme parks, area favorites include Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld San Antonio. Another popular spot is The River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio, which winds through the downtown area and is lined with an interest-ing array of restaurants and shops. To learn more about all the wonder-ful things San Antonio has to offer, please visit www.visitsanantonio.com/2009ImperialSession. In addition to these activities, families can look forward to having a great time at the Shriners’ com-petitions, where clown units, motor patrols, horse patrols, band units and more vie for top honors. And, of course, there’s always the parade, a Shriners specialty looked forward to by youngsters and adults alike.

While the Session will be tinged with sadness due to the unexpected and sudden passing of Deputy Imperial Po-tentate Terry McGuire of Alzafar Shri-ners in January, the Alzafar Shriners, with the guidance of Director Gen-eral Robert Jett and Deputy Director General David Martin, have continued to pour their efforts into ensuring the success of the 135th Session and are looking forward to welcoming every Shriner to their great state of Texas. The Session promises to be a very exciting week, full of the unique combination of the serious business of managing an international fraternity and philanthropy, and Shriners fun that defines this great organization. The Imperial Sir’s Evening on July 8, with entertainment by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, is sure to be just one of many memorable events of the Session. For more information about the 2009 Imperial Council Session, please visit www.Imperial2009.com, and check back often for updates.

My fellow nobles, as you read this, it is less thana month until our 28th Annual Sahib Shrine

Circus. I am sure there are plenty of tickets available. The Ladies of the Shrine are our agents for selling thetickets, since only two of the units or clubs took theopportunity to make BIG BUCKS by getting 25% forselling tickets.

Unfortunately, with the lead-time for articles inthe Reporter, it is really mid-February as I write this. The “Circus Dad & Mom” letters went out a monthago and the return leadsme to believe that most ofthem got lost in the mail. Ofthe 1,956 letters that wentout, responses have beenreceived from 216. I knowthat Masons and Shrinersrespond to help requestsbetter than that. The Cir-cus Committee thanks allthose that have responded. We ask those that eithernever got the request forsupport or have postponedtheir response please sendin a donation or call the circus office to get anotherletter sent. We have reduced the cost of recognition

this year to reflect the tough economy and the lowercost of the circus. We still are devoting one third ofour shows for the schoolchildren, the disadvantaged, and elderly that cannot afford to attend on their ownaccord. This means that we hope for one third of theexpenses to be met by you, our fellow nobles andsupporters. We are at about one half of that amount.

I had the pleasure of visiting Serge Corona’s com-pound and what a show we are in for. The camels arebeautiful, the black stallions are magnificent, the

giraffes were impressive andthe rest of the animals wereoutstanding. Plan to arriveearly to get the full impact ofthe petting zoo and plungeinto the atmosphere of a realcircus.

Plenty of help will beneeded for the days of theshows. See Ted Moltz or DaveJoly to volunteer to serve asushers, ticket takers, cash-iers, pooper-scoopers (notreally), program salespeople, and many other functions

that make the wheels run. As always, “It’s great to bea Shriner” and may God bless you all.

No Limits Sports Day

The orthotics and prosthetics department atShriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa origi-

nated the idea for the first No Limits Sports Dayevent in 1998. With help from the rehabilitationservices and child life departments, five sports -karate, basketball, volleyball, hockey and golf - wereoffered. No Limits Sports Day has been held annuallysince then, except in 2005 and 2006, when the hospi-tal hosted the National Junior Disability Champion-ships (NJDC).

On February 16, the Tampa Shriners Hospitalhosted the 2008 No Limits Sports Day, in collabora-tion with Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation andConservation Department, Blaze Sports Tampa Bayand the Paralympic Academy-Beijing Tampa Bay.

Children with physical disabilities age 6 and olderwho may use an orthosis, prosthesis or a wheelchairwere eligible to participate in the fun, informativeevent. Local instructors, hospital representatives andParalympians were on hand to coach and encouragethe kids. Sports clinics were offered in wheelchairbasketball, adaptive tennis, boccia, power wheel-chair soccer, weight lifting/training, table tennis, field events, hand-cycling, adaptive karate and dance. An open panel discussion for parents, as well as aresource table, provided information on other avail-able sports, nutrition and fitness.

Forty-three kids tested their skills at the No Lim-its Sports Day, including two Tampa Shriners Hospi-tal patient ambassadors, Eric and Anthony.

PP Glen “Buck” Walters and Lady Peggy initiatedan Annual Holiday Party for Sahib Shrine’s

Children’s Hospital patients. They would supply toysfor the children at Sahib Shrine.

During the year 2008, the Sahib Shrine Divandecided to continue the program due to PP Glen“Buck” Walters and his Lady Peggy not being wellenough to continue it.

The 2008 holiday party began by contacting Hos-pital Chairman Jesus Cabalo and asking him tocontact the hospital patients admitted to Shrine Hos-pitals through Sahib Shrine’s efforts.

We then asked the Oriental Band and the Clownsto supply the entertainment and Santa Clause (playedby our own Jim Trefrey) to give out the gifts to thechildren. It was decided that presents would be givento all siblings as well. Jesus would also invite theparent(s).

A luncheon was provided which consisted ofhotdogs, hamburgers, chips, chocolate chip cookiesand soda.

The gifts were purchased and/or donated for theparty and wrapped with tender loving care by nobles’ladies who enjoyed this, in fact this turned into aparty itself.

The party for 2008 was held Saturday, Decem-ber 6, 2008. All the cooking was done by our ownExecutive Chef Robert McClain and F&B ManagerGene Borkowski. The food was served by the Divanladies and the beverages were served by the Aides.

PP Glen “Buck” Walters and his Lady Peggy wereinvited to the 2008 party to participate and to receivea plaque offered by Ill. Sir John Mitchell, Potentate.Only Lady Peggy was present, PP “Buck” Walters’shealth would not allow him to attend. She was verypleased that we continued their good works.

We certainly hope this party will continue into thefuture and bring as much joy to all participants as itdid to the children.

Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) is facing themost tumultuous and trying economic environ-

ment in the history of the organization. Leadership isfocused on what is best for the Shriners Hospitals forChildren system, which means difficult decisionsmust be made.

The SHC-Galveston Hospital suffered significantdamage from Hurricane Ike in September of lastyear. More than $3.5 million has already been in-vested in addressing the damage. Patients have notbeen treated within the facility since the hurricane.Treatment of acute burns has been provided at otherhospitals within our system.

During this same period, the value of the endow-ment fund has fallen by more than $2 billion. Expen-ditures in 2009 are again anticipated to exceed thetotal amounts of gifts and bequests, dividend andinterest income, and other sources of recurring oper-ating income.

Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston Hospital Updateby Ralph Semb, President & CEO, [email protected]

Given current financial constraints and with ca-pacity available to treat acute burn patients at thethree other burns hospitals, the Boards of Directorsand Trustees have voted to suspend additional reno-vation and reconstruction activity at the SHC-Galveston Hospital, pending further evaluation andimprovement in our financial situation. Patients willcontinue to be served at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren and other locations as appropriate. An initialanalysis estimates that this action could avoid asmuch as $30 million in annualized operating ex-pense. This is one of many steps in a system-wideeffort to achieve long-term financial stability.

To date, we have demonstrated our commitmentto the staff of the hospital through continuation oftheir pay and benefits coverage. Since normal opera-tion of the hospital will not resume until furthernotice, this coverage will continue through March 31,

What is a Hedgehog Concept?by Bill C. Anthis, 33°

Being from southern Indiana, I am quite familiarwith ground-hogs but not with hedgehogs. In his

famous essay “The Hedgehog and the Fox,” IsaiahBerlin divided the world into hedgehogs and foxes, based upon an ancient Greek parable: The fox knowsmany things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.

This knowledge of one big thing has enabled thehedgehog to deny the fox, who knows many things, afine meal. Jim Collins, who wrote Good to Great, pointedout that “those who built the good-to-great companieswere, to one degree or another, hedgehogs. They usedtheir hedgehog nature to drive toward what we came tocall a “hedgehog concept” for their companies. Thosewho led the comparison companies tended to be foxes, never gaining the clarifying advantage of a hedgehogconcept, being instead scattered, diffused and inconsis-tent.”

For several months, Active and Active Emeriti Mem-bers of the Supreme Council have been discussing thequestion, “What is the Hedgehog Concept for ScottishRite?”

In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins points outthat hedgehogs are not stupid, but their approach tosurvival has to do with one concept.

They can roll themselves into a ball and are pro-tected by their spines which, while not poisonous, arevery thick and sharp.

He suggests that organizations need a simple con-cept to make themselves great. The concept should beone that allows a corporation’s leaders to see throughthe complexities of the corporation to a simple conceptthat makes the corporation effective.

He stresses the importance of seeing what is essen-tial and ignoring the rest. Collins points out that great

companies base all of their decisions upon a simpleconcept.

He stresses the importance of being passionate aboutbeing the best company of its kind. Finally, he main-tains that the leaders of a great organization need adeep and clear understanding of the hedgehog conceptas it applies to their organization.

The business or fraternity cannot be like the manwho jumped on his horse and rode off in all directions.

By basing all decisions on a simple hedgehog con-cept, a good organization will gain huge momentumtoward becoming a great organization.

There are many words that are taken for granted indescribing concepts that are musts for the success ofany organization. For instance, it must be financiallysound, well organized, have good leadership and manyother attributes that we refer to as givens.

However, to be a great organization, the company orfraternity must be the best at providing services andmeeting the needs of its customers or members usingapproaches that are not givens.

Those who have thoughtfully considered this ques-tion have determined that the future of Scottish Ritedepends upon transforming our fraternity into one thatbases its decisions on convenience, inspiration andenjoyment

Recognizing that the reader has not had the benefitof several hours of discussion on this subject, we wouldinvite you to respond to this article with your thoughts.

If you would like to have additional background, wewould suggest that you read Jim Collins’ book, Good toGreat.

Chivalric Orders of the York RiteCommandery (Preceptory) of Knights Templar

Order of The Red CrossAs the first step in a Commandery of Knights Templar, the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross continues thestory of the Royal Arch and deals with a period inJewish history at the time of the return of the Jewsfrom captivity and the efforts to rebuild the Temple oftheir God in Jerusalem. The Illustrious Order of TheRed Cross, peculiar to America, teaches the lessons ofthe triumph of TRUTH.

Order of The Knight Of MaltaThe second order in the Commandery is the Knight ofMalta with its pass degree of Knight of St. Paul or the

Mediterranean Pass. This Order is the first ChristianOrder encountered by the candidate. The ritual isbased historically upon one of the old Orders of theCrusades.

Order of The TempleThis is the third and most impressive Order of theCommandery and is wholly Christian. The Templartradition derives from the Society of the same namewhich played so important a part in the Crusades ofthe Middle Ages. Beautiful lessons of the death andascension of our Savior are inculcated and the candi-date is received into full fellowship, as a Sir Knight. In the most solemn manner. (Continuing in the Aprilissue.)

The ancient temple of King Solomon has turnedinto ruins; statues built to last for eternity have

disappeared, temples and cities built by masons fromthe basic science of masonry have gone to decay or inruins. Nations have risen and fallen, empires havebeen overthrown but Masonry survives. Have youever stopped to think of why? Perhaps it is because ofits teachings. Its primary purpose is the moral im-provement of its members through mutual brother-hood and fellowship. It is the attitude we have towardothers that is the proper respect or friendship for ourfellow men, providing assistance as required andtreating all upon the square. Perhaps it is a spiritualattitude exhibited by our belief in the strong moralvalues and that state of mind which guides us throughthe trials and disasters we face. Perhaps it is therestraint we show in all matters which could impair

our faculties or that course of action to accomplishthose things which contribute to our well-being. Per-haps it is striving to determine what is proper toachieve a just and well-regulated society.

The pursuit of these attributes sets a standardthat places the Masonic fraternity above the politicsand bickering throughout the world. It is these teach-ings that are conveyed to our brothers in all of ourdegrees. As long as we continue to emphasize theseattributes, we shall survive.

An opportunity to continue the education of yourfellow Masons will occur May 2 and 9 with our SpringReunion. Let’s get our fellow Masons to continuetheir education process and continue to make ourfraternity the most humane organization - except thechurch - that the world has known.

I just want to start out by saying thank you to all ofthe brothers that turned out on February 4 for the

presentation of the 14th Degree at the Scottish RiteClub, and what a turn out it was. All told we had overthirty brothers in lodge.

It’s great to see the efforts of everyone involvedwith the revival of the Sarasota Scottish Rite Clubstarting to pay off. A special thanks to Fred Heinzman,KCCH, for keeping the club going even while interestand participation had dwindled over the past severalyears. With the new officers in place, and a renewedagenda and your help, I think we have the opportu-nity to make the SSRC the best that it’s ever been.

Our next get together will be on Friday March 13.We’ll have our men’s luncheon at the Sahib startingat around 11:30 a.m. There is no meeting. This is just

an opportunity to get together and enjoy each otherscompany. Everyone orders off the menu. This is ca-sual and come as you are. No RSVP required. Justshow up and bring a friend. This is also a greatopportunity to bring a friend who you think may be aworthy applicant for Masonry. Introduce him to yourfellow brothers and share in the fellowship.

Next up is the Ceremony of Remembrance onMarch 25 at the Scottish Rite Club at 240 S. TuttleAve. This will be open to the public. What a greatopportunity to bring your family and friends andhave them be able witness an actual ritual. We willhonor all of our fellow Scottish Rite Masons who havepassed on in the previous year. We’ll serve a lightdinner starting at 6:00 p.m. with the ceremony to

Sar-I Court No. 79 LOSNAby Marlies Gluck-Upton, High Priestess, [email protected]

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Mary Ann Hastings, Queen, [email protected]

Here we are ladies; I am singing my swan song. Iwant to thank you all for your help and support

during the last year. I want to thank the officers whohave made this a memorable year with their uniqueevents.

Most recently, we all enjoyed the fashion showchaired by Lady Kay Weyer. Has any room ever heldso much love? Our Thursday evening group will con-tinue through the end of March after which LadyJoyce will unveil her plans.

Remember to meet me in the Library (upstairs) onthe third Thursday of the month to work on ourplacemats. Grotto ladies, feel free to join us. TheInstallation of Lady Joyce Goacher and her JOyfulJester Year will be on March 28 at the Shrine. Pleasejoin us to wish her a wonderful year. With heartfeltappreciation to the Shriners, our ladies and all oursupporters.

Six ladies that belong to the clown unit ofSar-I Court No. 79 Ladies of the OrientalShrine, took some quilts that they helpedmake up to the Tampa hospital in fullclown costumes. The ladies were DenaArnold, Kay Neary, Jane Bohannon,Amanda Cyphers, Directress JoanneRyder and myself LaVerne Mims. What awonderful time. We got to see so manychildren in the lunch room, even a visiting3rd grade class from some elementaryschool. They were all happy with the ladyclowns and all the bright colors.

The hospital took this picture and Ithought you should see what some of ourladies do with their time.

Time sure has flown and my reign as Queen is justabout over; what a memorable year it has been. It

started with a cruise with Past Supreme QueenEleanor Green, my husband Jared and daughter Su-san. Then we were able to see our daughter Susan L.Hastings Flanders installed as Queen of AhlemTemple No. 84 in Springfield, MA. We headed homethe next day and I was installed as Queen of NylaTemple No. 152 on the following Saturday at theVenice Masonic Lodge. Charles Levan 33° repre-sented the Illustrious Potentate.

The highlights of my year included a trip withthen Supreme Queen Eleanor Green, Marilyn Carlsen,P.Q. and seven other ladies to Mexico City to visit theShriners Hospital for Children. Our tour guide wasImperial Sir Ralph Semb.

We had to find a new home as the Scottish Rite wasno longer conducive for our sessions. After visitingseveral churches and with the help of Juanita Sebensand Jeannette Hocking we chose the Elks Lodge onNorth Lockwood Ridge Road where Chef David servesus a delicious lunch every session.

A Bon Voyage party was held at Sahib Shrinebefore I went to Supreme Session at a cold and veryexpensive Seattle, Washington, with my daughter

Susan and Marilyn Carlsen, P.Q. where Muriel V.Knapp was installed as Supreme Queen.

We celebrated our 25th anniversary at the OspreyInn on September 20, 2008 with Oscar Cloutier rep-resenting the Illustrious Potentate. It was great tosee a lot of the ladies who helped organize our templethere.

September found me back in New England attend-ing the Supreme Queen’s visits to Ahlem Shrinersand several other temples in the northeast.

We held our first Ceremonial in October where weinitiated two new members, Patricia Dennis andDiane Nourse.

Founders Day was held in November with a deli-cious cake celebrating the founders of Daughters ofthe Nile. I was also honored to be invited to the ladiesluncheon at the Ceremonial of Sahib Shrine, where Iwas asked to give a short speech.

December was the visit from our Supreme QueenMuriel V. Knapp, where we again initiated a newmember, Janet Doty. We enjoyed a banquet at theOsprey Inn. Again Charles Levan, 33°, representedthe Illustrious Potentate. The Whistlers from SahibShrine entertained us; they sure were a hit.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals

Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 orMarylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 orChickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 orConnie Lawson (941) 758-8274 or

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donatingaluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As ofSeptember 10, 2008, they have collected 57,251 lbs., for a total of$28,037.38 for the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS

1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete canswould require a great deal more storage space. You shouldgo ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way,in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds

worth.4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs

are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. Themoney netted from recycling goes directly into the “WheelChair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital forChildren.

Help us collect TABS! It’s easy and it’s fun! Put out a milk jug at every picnic or party!

Don’t miss this second-chance opportunity to make tax-free gifts from your IRA!

Making a charitable contribution to a meaningful and worthy cause like Shriners Hospitals for Children is one of the most rewarding things most of us will ever experience during our lifetimes. A gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children offers so many benefits…both to the children in our care and to the donors who generously support our mission. Prior to 2006, however, many people who wished to make a gift from their IRA may have been discouraged from doing so because of certain income tax consequences. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 eliminated those barriers and allowed donors to make tax-free distributions to qualifying charities from their IRA in 2006 and 2007. Now, there is good news once more for those wishing to make a contribution from their IRA. Under new legislation, there is again a limited-time opportunity for certain individuals to avoid federal income tax on IRA distributions to Shriners Hospitals for Children. A provision in the Emergency Economic Stabalization Act of 2008 provides an exclusion from gross income for IRA distributions to a public charity, such as Shriners Hospitals for Children, of up to $100,000 per year. The legislation applies to traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs for qualified charitable distributions made during 2008 and 2009 by plan owners who have attained at least age 70 ½ on the date of the distribution to the charity.

Good News for Donors:

Charitable IRA Rollover is Back!

Eligible Plans: IRAs and Roth IRAs. Other forms of retirement plans such as 401(k), 403(b) annuities, defined benefit and contribution plans, profit sharing plans and Keoghs plans are not eligible.

Eligible Dates: Transfers made between Jan. 1, 2008, and Dec. 31, 2009.Age: The income tax exclusion applies to individuals who have reached 70 ½ by the date of the contribution.

Distribution Limitation: The amount that can be excluded from a plan owner’s income is limited to $100,000 per taxpayer per year. Therefore, a married couple can donate up to $200,000, provided each spouse owns at least one IRA and can each make a qualified charitable distribution of up to $100,000 from their plans. Funds or securities transferred by your IRA custodian directly from your IRA to Shriners Hospitals for Children can count toward your annual mandatory withdrawal and avoids federal income tax.

Qualified Charitable Distributions: Any distribution from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA made directly by the IRA administrator to Shriners Hospitals for Children can qualify. (Shriners Transportation Funds, donor-advised funds, supporting organizations and private foundations do not qualify.)

Direct Distributions: The IRA distribution of cash or securities must be made directly from the IRA custodian, administrator or trustee to the charity – the check from the IRA should be made payable to Shriners Hospitals for Children, not the plan participant. Arrangements for the electronic transfer of securities from the IRA can be made.

If you are interested in learning more about making a gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children from your IRA or other giving opportunities, please contact the Office of Development. Consult your own attorney or tax advisor for more details and to determine if this manner of giving is appropriate for your situation.
