Included in news of favorite and upcoming shows were: Doctor
Who’s new season, which starts August 23; “Intruders”
miniseries, starring ex-Doctor Who Master actor John Simm,
begins this Fall; watch for a movie adaptation of Jonathan
Strange and Mr Norell; the current Doctor Who actor, Peter
Capaldi, will star in miniseries Musketeers as Richelieu; the
movie “Edge of Tomorrow, “ based on the plot of a Japanese
story All You Need is Kill, was like a Tom Cruise version of
Groundhog Day with an alien invasion; “Dawn of the Planet of
the Apes, the current remake of Battle of the Planet of the
Apes, has lots of apes and a creepy feeling. There were "doves"
and "hawks" on both the ape and human sides. Since apes don't
feel shame or guilt, they have an advantage. Steve mentioned that
a National Public Radio special documented that female apes in
the wild will decorate their hair if an alpha female ape in their
group does it.
Patricia recommends reading The Science of Discworld. David
likes The Last Policeman. Steve recommends the Laundry series
by Charles Stross. Bob recommended the movie My Name is
Modesty," a possible tribute to the character Modesty Blaise.
Juan gave an engaging and thorough PowerPoint presentation on
the Hugo nominees in seven categories, along with a brief history
of some of the artists and authors. Contact him for any
suggestions, or a copy of the presentation.
Steve announced that Sci Fi Lite will be on the 4th Saturday of
July at Sweet Traditions in Winter Garden, and the open
discussion will be about best books read this summer. The
following Sci Fi Lite will be on the 3rd Saturday of August,
about the Rivers of London series, beginning with Moon Over
Soho.
The next OASFiS meeting will be August 10th, and the book we
will talk about will be Under the Graveyard Sky by John Ringo.

OASIS Meeting
Date: 7-13-14
Officers: David Lussier, Patty Russell Juan Sanmiguel
Members: Kim Darin, Arthur Dykeman, Steve Grant, Patricia
Wheeler
Guest: Bob Yazel
Our president, Peggy, was unable to attend, so David began the
meeting with convention news from Juan.
Regarding the hotel contract, wording about the Con Suite and a
waiver for food brought in for Dessert Night and the Chili Cook-
off still needs to be added. Juan will send any news of this as it
comes from the new hotel event coordinator. Juan will also wait
to invite Jeff and Ann VanderMeer until the hotel contract is
signed. All present agreed a Con Suite is desirable, and Steve
volunteered to run it if Bonny does not. Juan will ask Tom Reed
to updating the Con flyer and Oasis website.
Patricia described the July 4th club party at her lovely house as
fun, and a good mix of guests. Twenty plus people showed up,
including Judy and Rob and friends from Clermont. Michael and
Donna had a good send off to Italy (by way of Connecticut), with
two special desserts from Colleen, one being Tiramisu! Patricia
made her famous chocolate chip cookies, and both Kim and Ed
brought deviled eggs. There was much more to eat, and even late
-comers had plenty. I

Florida Supercon
Florida Supercon was held on July 3-6 at the Miami
Beach Convention Center. Guests included: Nichelle Nichols
(Uhura, Star Trek), Carroll Spinney (muppeteer, Big Bird and
Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street), George Perez (comic
book artist and co-creator of the New Teen Titans), Timothy
Zahn (Hugo Winning writer), and Peter David (writer and OA-
SIS 21 Guest of Honor).
Florida Supercon moved from the Miami Airport Con-
vention Center to the Miami Beach Convention Center. This was
a big improvement. The convention was congested at the old
location. On Saturday, it was quite easy to get around the con-
vention. This space came at a price of higher parking fees, alt-
hough if one was willing to walk a short distance, there was free
parking on the street. Florida Supercon has found a great home.
There was a lot of good programming. There was a
combination of pro and fan panels. Fans got to discuss their fa-
vorite topics and the pros did Q&As. There were some advice
panels on producing films and comics. There were several game
shows throughout the weekend, some by local fan Nicholas
Roche. He hosted Star Trek Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
There was a lot I wanted to see, but unfortunately, I had only had
one day at the convention.
Actor William Katt discussed his career and answered
questions. Katt talked about his audition for Luke Skywalker. He
was teamed up with Kurt Russell, who was auditioning for Han
Solo. Though neither of them got the role, the audition did help
their careers. Katt got his part from Carrie because of that audi-
tion. Katt enjoyed his work on The Greatest American Hero. He
got along with his co-stars Connie Selleca, Robert Culp and crea-
tor/producer Stephen J. Cannell. Katt and Selleca were sur-
prised when they went to their first convention and saw the fans’
enthusiasm for the show. Katt was asked if he kept the costume
from the show. He said no because so few of them were made
for all three years of the show’s production. The costume was
never comfortable; it was hot in the summer and cold in the win-
ter. Katt was asked about his mother, actress Barbara Hale. She
is in her nineties and still in good health.
Peter David and Timothy Zahn discussed writing stories
in established universes. Timothy Zahn addressed the recent
announcement that Disney re-classifying the Star Wars Expand-
ed Universe (all Star Wars stories not filmed or televised) to
“what if” or alternate universe status. Zahn feels this does not
invalidate the stories he and others have written. There are ways
to fit these stories in the main Star Wars continuity. Zahn had
easy time working with Lucasfilm. When the studio had a prob-
lem with a novel, Zahn could usually work it out. When he wrote
a scene with R2-D2 piloting an X-Wing, there was a discussion
with studio representatives. At first Zahn did not understand why
they objected since the films showed R2-D2 and other droids
controlling ships. When he realized their issue was that the se-
quence was missing a scene to explain how the fighter got to
point A to B then it was easy to fix. David wrote a story called
“Skippy, the Jedi Droid” that was about the droid that malfunc-
tioned next to R2-D2 in Star Wars: A New Hope. David submit-
ted a story to a Star Wars “what if” comic, where R2-D2 was
captured, the rebellion failed, and Leia became the new ruler of
the Galaxy with Luke as her consort. David explained that dur-
ing this story Luke and Leia would have never discovered that
they were related. Lucasfilm was not comfortable with the story
and it was not published. David was successful in making Sulu’s
first name Hikaru canon. David was on the set of Star Trek VI
and suggested to George Takei to use the name given to Sulu in
the novels published by Pocket Books. They went to director
Nicholas Myer who quite casually agreed to use the name in the
film. At a screening with fellow Star Trek writers, there was
cheering when they heard the name being used. David had a
problem with his Star Trek: The Next Generation novel Q-in-
Law that was about a meeting of Lwaxana Trois and Q. There
was someone at Paramount who did not like David and was
blocking the novel’s approval. David was able to get a copy to
Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who played Lwaxana Troi. She en-
joyed the book and asked Paramount when it was coming out.
After that they got the approval for the book. At a Marvel retreat
for the writers of the mutant titles, David jokingly suggested that
Magneto rip out Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton. The editors
took it seriously and explored the idea. David had to remind
them that Wolverine would be dead without a skeleton, and even-
tually they decided to have the adamantium removed from Wol-
verine’s skeleton. After the panel I asked, David if he had put a
TARDIS cameo in his Young Justice script or had the series pro-
duction team put that in. He said it was always planned to have
the TARDIS appear in the episode.
I got to meet muppeteer Carroll Spinney. People could
take pictures with him for free. When I shook his hand I told him
it was an honor to meet one of Jim Henson’s original muppeteers.
Spinney said that he always thought he and Henson would be
doing this for a long time, so Henson’s death as quite a shock. I
also bought a signed picture from Spinney.
Florida Supercon was great con. I hope to check it out
for next year and maybe do more than one day.
