Taking inspiration from the 2012 Olympics held in London, he has run at least 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) per day every day for the last three years. That’s right. Jim has been running a minimum of 10 km a day and often more. In 2015, he completed a triathlon every day – swimming 750m, cycling 40km and running 10km. The 47-year-old Englishman has been running daily since 2013. At first, he began trying to run a total of 3 years, 14 days, 16 hours – like Forrest Gump in the movie of the same name. He has already clocked 11,000 miles in the UK. His new goal, to run 20,000 miles through the United States, means that he will need to run close to 20 miles per day, every day for three years. Plunkett-Cole also said he plans to impose a minimum distance for himself of 17 miles per day, to be done in one chunk. He said he’d go further per day if he can, but definitely not less. Jim started his US run in Alabama, just like Forest, and was recently in Katy at Woodcreek Elementary to encourage students there to get out and experience nature. In his “Talk and Run” visits Jim talks about the importance of daily physical activity, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. The talk is followed by a short run and a fun group photo with the children. Plunkett-Cole’s run won’t follow the fictional character’s path exactly, nor the distance. He has something else in common with the character of Gump, and just like Forrest Gump, he has trouble coping with groups of strangers. He has Asperger’s Syndrome, a condition that makes it difficult for him to interact socially with people, especially strangers. He hopes that by talking about it, he will be able to inspire kids on the autism spectrum and let them know that their condition doesn’t need to be viewed negatively. Plunkett-Cole is hoping to bring his message to children across the United State and recently crossed his first 1,000 miles in America. He will soon head towards the East Coast. The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college. In the summer of 2011, the Band began rehearsing and performing concerts at CrossPoint Community Church, in Katy, Texas. In December 2012, the Lone Star Symphonic

Band was awarded the Sudler Silver Scroll. The Sudler Silver Scroll is North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation (www.sousafoundation.net). The purpose of the award is to identify, recognize and honor those community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years, and which have played a significant and leading role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. In August 2016, the Band moved to Holy Covenant United Methodist Church for its rehearsals and concerts. The Band is under the direction of Mr. Bob Bryant.

facility say that birds will bring in fish eggs and naturally create a fish pond. Over the next two years you will likely start to see some fish out there, starting out small and getting bigger. The bottom of the lake has been shaped for the fish as it is naturally stocked over time. The lake bottom was built with different depths to create different habitats.

The park is massive and has a restroom, with another restroom building planned for construction the other side of the park in the future. There is a playground located near the entrance of the park. Willow Fork Park will be a great place for all to enjoy Frisbee golf, picnics or flying kites. You can also run, jog or go biking. Developers have created several different habitats with a little bit of piney woods and a little bit of Katy Prairie.

WFDD is waiting for CenterPoint Energy to install the electricity for the bathrooms and for the security cameras. There is solar lighting throughout which makes the park environmentally friendly. Additionally, safety is very important to WFDD so that all patrons will enjoy the park. “There will be a combination of Security Guards on the premises as well as video monitoring so that the park has security 24 hours a day 7 days a week,” said WFDD Director Dan Smith. The park will be open dawn to dusk.

Developers are working with the adjacent Municipal Utility District on getting reclaimed water to serve the lake and all the irrigation systems in the future. Cinco Ranch has had a big push to use reused water.

Willow Fork Park will also be educational for all using signs throughout the park to highlight the animals and birds that will call the facility home. Landscapers have planed native and naturalized plant species that will help reduce the amount of irrigation needed.

The property is actually owned by the Katy Independent School District and is operated by WFDD as part of a 50-year lease. President of the WFDD Board, Richard Ward said, “We have talked to realtors and they believe that with the new park, it will help increase property values,” however “we do not believe that it will reduce actual property taxes.”

The pavilion was named after richard Ward long time Director and President of WFDD. Ward was surprised after the Ribbon Cutting as a plaque bearing his name was unveiled. The ribbon cutting ceremony featured Rebecca Fox, President of Katy ISD Board of Trustees, Dr. Lance Hindt, Superintendent of Katy ISD and WFDD Director’s John Poulter, April Renberg, Joe Robinson, Dan Smith and Richard Ward.

We encourage our readers to visit the park and make use of its amenities.

On Friday, October 28th, as an early celebration, the Cinco Ranch High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America got together for their annual Halloween Katy Christian Ministries Can Drive. While Halloween commonly holds the American tradition of people of all ages receiving candy and joy from others, the Cinco Ranch Chapter of FBLA decided to take a refreshing reverse and give to others rather than receive. Members went above and beyond spending a round trip of as long as 6 hours placing flyers on their neighbors’ doors and then returning the next day to collect cans to donate to KCM.

With the combined effort of hardworking and generous members, the Cinco Ranch Chapter of FBLA was able to collect a grand total of 1316 cans with Daniel Gaw donating the most at an impressive count 325 cans.

Following the collection, they had a spooky social decked out with all kinds of creative costumes including teabags, snapchat filters, zombies, magicians, and much more. After dinner, the members gathered to participate in an exciting costume contest by competing against one another for the best costume on the runway. After a couple hours of fun and games, the winner was declared. Haylee Giang won the contest with her “tea-rrific” costume. Special thanks to PDQ for providing FBLA with a nice location and amazing food for this year’s “Scare Away Hunger” can drive and Abby Rooney’s dad for providing a large truck to transport all 1316 cans to KCM. The Cinco Ranch High School Chapter of FBLA had an enjoyable time making awesome memories and helping out in the community.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, The Cinco Ranch High School Cheerleaders took part in the largest ‘Pink Out’ event in Katy ISD’s history that raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer awareness and prevention. The cheerleaders from Cinco Ranch sported pink in some form at their football games throughout the month of October, such as pink socks, bows, or pompons. In addition, Cinco Ranch High School encouraged all students, staff and community members

to show their support for breast cancer awareness and prevention by wearing pink and purchasing their limited edition ‘Pink Out’ t-shirts. They sold the limited edition ‘Pink Out’t shirts and donated the proceeds to The Rose, a non-profit organization aimed at diagnosis and care for women including such measures as mammograms and bone density testing as well as assisting women and families with early detection, treatment and support. Libraries To Close In Observance Of Thanksgiving Holiday

All branches of Fort Bend County Libraries, including the Cinco Ranch Branch Library and the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, will be closed Thursday, November 24, through Sunday, November 27, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Regular library hours will resume on Monday, November 28.

The University of Houston System (UHS) has completed the purchase of 46 acres of land in Katy from Parkside Capital. The land is located at the northeast corner of I-10 and the Grand Parkway and will be developed into a campus serving West Houston. Academic programs from two UH System universities, the University of Houston and the University of Houston-Victoria, will be offered at the new campus.

The 46 acres purchased by the UH System is part of a larger 125-acre site that UHS and Parkside Capital have rebranded as University Center, a master-planned, deed restricted, mixed-use development. Parkside Capital will soon begin design and construction of all interior infrastructure including streets, utilities, lighting and landscaping.

“We are excited to welcome the University of Houston and UH-Victoria to University Center,” said John S. Moody, Parkside Capital CEO. “We look forward to working with the UH System to create a first-class environment.”

The UH System will construct an 80,000-square-foot building at University Center, expected to open for fall 2019. The project is in the design phase, and construction is expected to begin in August 2017. The campus is expected to initially serve 2,000 students, but the master plan includes 500,000-square-feet of space that will eventually be able to accommodate 8,000 to 10,000 students.

“Residents in this area have a need for higher education, but it can be a hardship to travel all the way across Houston in order

to go to school,” said Paula Myrick Short, UH System vice chancellor for academic affairs. “The UH System’s expansion will give residents in parts of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties an opportunity to earn their degrees closer to home.”

Expanding higher education opportunities in West Houston has long been a priority for regional leaders and the UH System, which has offered programs in the area for 30 years. UH and UHV both offer classes in Katy at separate leased locations. They previously offered academic programming at the System’s Cinco Ranch site, which is being sold.

The purchase of the land and the construction of the building in Katy are funded by $46.8 million in Capital Construction Bonds approved during the 84th session of the Texas Legislature. The UH System assembled a task force to assess the educational needs of West Houston, and an independent demography study was conducted to determine the ideal location of a campus that would be accessible and visible.

“This site is well-suited to meet our needs,” said Short. “It allows the System room to grow strategically with the population increase that is expected in this area.”

According to data from the Katy Area Economic Development Council, the population of the Katy area is expected to increase from 317,000 residents to 550,000 within the next 20 years, and about 200 companies are headquartered there, including many in the energy sector.

Dynamic changes are happening in today’s libraries. With the addition of four new 3D printers, Fort Bend County Libraries continues to stay on the forefront of implementing innovative technology for the citizens of Fort Bend County.

Located at George Memorial Library in Richmond, the Cinco Ranch Branch Library in Katy, the Mamie George Branch Library in Stafford, and the Sienna Branch Library in Missouri City, the PolyPrinter 229 3D printers are available for use starting November 14, by anyone with a valid Fort Bend County Libraries card or a valid government-issued photo ID. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when submitting a 3D print request.

By adding 3D printers to its arsenal of high-tech resources, Fort Bend County Libraries joins the ranks of more than 250 public libraries around the country that are assuming a leading role in the movement to help people of all ages develop the skills and competencies they need to thrive in a high-tech world.

The new 3D-printers yield many benefits to the community, such as providing opportunities for children to experiment with new high-tech tools, encouraging new technology-based innovation in small business, and helping people of all ages build cutting-edge skills for the evolution of the digital age.

3D printing is the process of making an actual physical object from a 3-dimensional digital design. The libraries’ PolyPrinter 229 3D printers use PLA (polylactic acid) thermoplastic filament, which is a non-toxic biodegradable material.

Some 3D-design software options that people can use to design objects include Tinkercad, Blender, SketchUp, and AutoDesk 123d – Catch or Design. Design resources also include websites like Thingiverse, YouMagine, and My

Mini Factory.Patrons can bring print files in .stl

format on a flash drive to the library. Library staff will be the ones to actually print the object. A fee of $0.20 per gram of filament used will be charged, with a $1.00 minimum.

Small items can take as little as 20 minutes to print, while other items can take much longer. Projects printed at the libraries have a 5-hour print time maximum. The 3D printers can print objects up to 8” wide x 8” high x 8” deep. Designs must be copyright-free or the patron must have license authorization.

George Memorial Library is located at 1001 Golfview in Richmond; the Cinco Ranch Branch Library is located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd in Katy; the Mamie George Branch Library is located at 320 Dulles Ave in Stafford; and the Sienna Branch Library is located at 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd in Missouri City. Library hours are listed on the FBCL website, www.fortbend.lib.tx.us.

For more information on how to get started, call George Memorial Library (281-342-4455), the Cinco Ranch Branch Library (281-395-1311), the Mamie George Branch Library (281-238-2880), the Sienna Branch Library (281-238-2900), or the library system’s Public Information Office (281-633-4734).

Football Playoffs – Week One

Katy vs. Travis … A Cat FightTigers against Tigers at Rhodes Stadium Friday evening

Going into the game Katy was averaging 44.9 points per game, while Travis was scoring 42.4. The difference lies in defense, 14.3 and 30.5, respectively. Travis finished alone in second place in District 20-6A with a 5-2 record.

Last year Katy defeated Travis 57-0 in the second game under current Travis head coach Trey Sissom.

In Friday nights’ game at Rhodes Stadium, Travis Tigers beat the Katy Tigers in many of the stat areas: 423 total yards to 392 for Katy; 24 first downs to 14 for Katy; passing yardage 390 to 60 for Katy. But the Katy Tigers had the larger numbers on the Rhodes Stadium scoreboard at game’s end: Katy 51, Travis 25.

In the first quarter Deondrick Glass scored twice for Katy in the first quarter, first on a 59 yard run, and then again on a five yard run. Seth Small added both extra points. Glass now has 1,843 rushing for this year, and will be pushing to break the 2,000 yard mark in Katy’s next game with Cy Ranch.

The Travis Tigers put three points on the score board off a 22 yard field goal from Garrett Urban

In the second quarter Katy added 17 more points through a pass reception by Ryder Anderson from Rocky Emery. The next score made the highlight reel as Keshon Rowe intercepts an Amryn Jeffrey pass and goes 70 yards for the touchdown. Seth Small added a 28 yard field goal and the point after for Rowe’s TD.

Naveon Mitchell added a touchdown for the Travis Tigers; point after failed. Urban boosts field goal completed percentage by making one for 30 yards as time runs out in the first half with Katy holding the lead 31-12.

In Division 1, or more commonly referred to as Large School division, Katy and Morton Ranch represented District 19-6A. Katy advanced to the next level with a 51-25 win over Travis. Morton Ranch had upset in their sight, but succumbed to a tough Ridge Point Panther team, 42-23.

touchdowns, one by Glass, this one for 51 yards and a one yard score by Joshua Oglesby. Small adds material to the highlight reel in making two more field goals, one from 30 yards and another from 44 yards, and don’t forget all the point after touchdowns he continued to make.

Amryn Jeffrey completes passes to Arjei Henderson, one

for 29 yards, and the other for 5 yards for two touchdowns. Urban makes one extra point. The Travis Tigers try for two points extra touchdown. The Katy Tiger defense says no.

In playoff game two, the Katy Tigers meet Cy Ranch who defeated Bellaire 63-42. The Tigers make an early playoff visit to NRG Stadium on Friday evening.

At Hall Stadium in Missouri City, it was a “purple out” as the purple and white clad Panthers of Ridge Point High School took on the purple and white team, the Morton Ranch Mavericks.

It was the fourth time in six years that the Mavericks have made the playoffs. They were facing a tough first round opponent in Ridge Point, 10-0. It’s the second perfect season in three years, and the Panthers own the top scoring defense in the state.

At half time Ridge Point held a tenuous 21-10 lead. Simon Lueth put the first numbers on the Hall Stadium scoreboard with a 26 yard field goal. The Panthers came back on a 36 yard pass from Aaron Allen to Mustapha Muhammad; Dylan Malpass added the extra point conversion. Morton Ranch answered with a 15 yard run from Nic Hernandez; Lueth was on target for the extra point with 0:14 left in the first quarter.

Head Coach, Brett Sniffin of the Ridge

Point Panthers said after the game Morton Ranch was what they expected, but even more; “they really got after us, frustrated us all night long, just relentless pounding and pounding on offense.”

In the second half the Mavericks were only down five points from pulling off a big upset, but the Panthers of Ridge Point showed their talent depth as Mason McBride scored his first TD of the night and enlarged their lead.

Ridge Point’s Coach Sniffin said the Panther game plan was to keep Hernandez from getting the ball as much as possible. “We knew the quarterback had big play playability. Out of the three runners in the option, he was the one we really focused on, stopping.”

“We took the fight to them, played a very physical game, and had a chance to beat a good team,” said Maverick head coach, Dave Meadows. “We just couldn’t quite finish.” The Mavericks end their season at 5-6.

Division II – Small SchoolThe Taylor Mustangs and the Cinco Ranch Cougars represent District 19-6A in the

“small school”, Div II, in the state football playoffs. As the dust settled on Saturday morning, Taylor outscored Kempner 60-42. Cinco Ranch scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Bush Broncos, 31-17

I hope there were some were college scouts in attendance for the Cinco Ranch-Bush game, as James Klingler, Cinco Ranch quarterback had a great game, completing half of his six passes for touchdowns. His touchdown passes went for 38, 6, and 45 yards.

Bronco quarterback, Wade Freeman, hooked up with Dontae Donahu and Shawn Thomas for 101 passing yardage touchdowns.

Brant Kuithe had another strong run game wearing down the Bush defense, including a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Stopping Kuithe requires multiple tacklers. He will carry one or two tacklers for three, four, or five additional yards. I hope the college scouts are writing his name down.

Cinco Ranch meets Langham Creek, Saturday, 1 p.m. at Tully Stadium.

With Seven Lakes’ loss in the semi-finals to Clear Creek, 25-20, 12-25, 25-27 and 20-25, District 19-6A volleyball closes the book on another great, challenging, and interesting season.

The Lady Spartans defeated Travis 3-0 in Bi-district, Cypress Ranch 3-1 in Area, Langham Creek 3-2 in the quarterfinals.

Last year Seven Lakes defeated Westside 3-0, Memorial 3-0, Cy Falls 3-0, and Clear Springs 3-1, before losing in the Regional Final to Fort Bend Austin 3-2.

Joining the Lady Spartans in the playoffs

from District 19-6A were Taylor, Katy, and Cinco Ranch. Taylor lost to Fort Bend Austin, 3-2 and Cinco Ranch was defeated 3-0 to Ridge Point, both in the Bi-district level.

Katy defeated Dulles 3-2 in Bi-district, Cy-Woods 3-0 at Area, and then lost to Ridge Point, 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

This year Clear Creek defeated George Ranch in the finals, 25-16, 26-24, and 25-20. Next week in Garland, Clear Creek will be playing for the State Championship and will try to finish off its most successful season in school history.
