CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE:

It is a relief to report that Paul Whitehead is on the road to recovery and now at the Riverfields Lodge, a rehabilitation centre in Nietgedacht, and according to Caroline is doing well. Visitors are welcome. Paul was shot by intruders, a single shot that went through his carotid artery. The bullet is still in his neck, a .22, and it will probably stay there. I am sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery. The Natal Classic has come and gone and the next big one is the Magnum. Since this rally is promoted by our club I would appeal to you to consider entering. Numbers is always a problem and the organisers work very hard to encourage members to enter. The Magnum for those of you who have not entered before, is a magnificent rally with great accommodation and scenery, and the organisation is always faultless – so com on let’s have a bumper field this year! Just a reminder that subs are due so please make payment at your earliest convenience. Also be reminded that it is our AGM in August.

And a final reminder – we are still looking for one final sponsor for the calendar. Please contact and committee member if you know of anyone who may be interested. See you at the 1,000 bike show on the 6th and 7th of July!

In the meantime - Yours in safe riding Andy Stead

Club Night 27 May 2013 Andy welcomed everyone and the meeting observed a moment’s silence for the passing of Ian Hesketh and Dennis Mamet both of whom had passed away recently. First time visitors Murray Russell and Tony Romans were welcomed. Andy then continued by explaining that there was a need for volunteers to assist with bar duties and some tidying up after the meetings on a Monday evening. In the absence of volunteers coming forward members would be nominated for these duties so they should be prepared for this. The motorcyclist of the month was awarded to Ian Holmes for organising the Sunday Ride to the Melon Rouge Restaurant. While this was fairly well supported Andy emphasized that there should be more participants in future as these were [pleasant outings and built some club spirit too. The Natal Classic was reported as having been a great success and the results would be in the next issue of Kickstart.VMC had won the Club Trophy and this was displayed. Pierre Cronje raised the issue of poor participation in organized events and it was suggested that each event should have an appointed Champion who would round up support and entrants for it. Pierre would pursue this. Andy then read out a number of emails which he had received and also alerted members to a scam being operated by someone who offered spares for sale and then never delivered having been paid in advance. Members were urged to be alert in this regard. Ian Wright then gave an interesting talk on his own history in the world of motorcycling and in particular the Gnome Rhone engine which was on display. The history of this engine which lies with the Sopwith Camel aircraft from World War 1 was of great interest. In the picture is Ian Wright telling us about the bike.

(I wasn’t asleep Ian – I promise!! (Ed)

After the drinks break some DJ footage was shown and the usual raffle also took place. The bike on display came with a good story of how the owner had lost interest in the machine some years back but this has been revived by his most enthusiastic son Grant who can ride the machine well despite his youth. His obvious passion for old motorcycles is wonderful to see and we could do with a few more Grants at the club!

In the picture Ken looks on while Grant enthusiastically starts the Triumph.

The meeting then adjourned and the next one will be on the 24th June at the VVC Clubhouse. The headcount was fifty. Ian Holmes Odds and Ends: The Natal Classic has come and gone. This is a truly great rally and came this year accompanied by good weather and a reasonable turn out. It’s a real pity that the R74 running past Sterkfontein dam is still a complete shambles as the route through the Golden gate to Clarens which used to be on the schedule sadly is no more. Results and comments by Beeza Geeza appear later on in this issue. We seem to be getting into the swing of the electronic Kick Start although there are still members who are unable to open or locate the attachment. Again, please be reminded that Kickstart is loaded to the VMC website the day before the meeting, so it is always possible to access it via the website. Print copies will still be made available for those without access to the internet. I urge all of you to please take advantage of Kickstart in its on line form. You will be able to publish photos of bikes you may have for sale, or items for that matter. Photos always enhance the ad and make it a lot easier for a potential buyer to make a decision and an offer. Send your photos etc to [email protected]

There is always a shortage of articles for publication in Kickstart. If you have anything you feel would be of interest to members please jot it down and send it in – don’t worry about the layout, grammar, spelling or anything like that – just send it in!!! Pleased to advise that Raymond Meyer (again!) submitted the first correct answer to last month’s crossword number 10 – see answers later in this issue. Well done Raymond – collect your free beer from me! Again I remind you that Frik Kraamwinkel – Projekbestuurder, Cars in the Park 2013 has advised on behalf of the POMC that they would like to display a number of old motorcycles (built before 1945) in the special invite area. The event is on the 4th of August. Exhibitors will have

Congratulations to all those VMC members who did so well!!! The Natal Classic – a goodie!! By Beeza Geeza Not sure whether to do this one, and then a mention from fellow member Peter Vlietstra that he had space on his trailer finally convinced me. What bike to ride? – that is the question. It is a classic rally after all, so a classic bike should do the trick and yet……. There was old trusty V twin BSA fresh from the JD and it hadn’t had the best of runs there what with water in the mag, broken exhaust flange and weird things happening with the spark plugs – maybe a fix up and give it another go?? So off to matey machinist Phil, and he could do the exhaust flange and make me the special spanner needed for the plugs, and I decided I would re do all the HT wiring, and make a fancy cover for the mag. in time for the classic – so V twin it was to be. All fixed by the time we left, and V twin and Peter’s Sloper (is a Sloper the front half a V twin one wonders?) mounted up and raring to go. Off then to collect Chairman of the CMC and Wifie

and Pierre’s Triumph fresh from a rebuild and heavily laden off we go! Good trip down, and once there meet up with my Boetie-in-law from Durbs who is doing his first rally on his Norton 88 so looks like a boozy kinda rally.

Boetie-in-law on Norton on the left

Off we go the next day. Drakensville is actually a very nice resort, BUT hey that road from there to the main road is a shocker, and riding into the sun at Sparrows is quite a feat and a guaranteed wakeup call!. Anyway manage to navigate the craters, and once onto main road find that there are absolutely NO milestones.. Not too much of a problem as I have Martin Davies in front of me and he is a rally supremo, so just keep a minute behind him and I should be OK. Problem is I am one of the last in the A group, and it’s not long before the rockers in the B group are roaring past, so don’t know whether it’s one of them or Martin one minute ahead of me (d’ya think Martin would mind if I asked him to put a flashing red light on his helmet??)

Beeza Geeza’s view of Martin Davies

Anyway after about two hours start seeing the odd milestone and fall into my normal +/- 30 seconds early/late at each marshal. Couple of stops and go’s but decided to ignore them and

just keep riding, so didn’t waste a lot of time there and otherwise an uneventful ride. Straight into the pub for a few frosties. Then a couple of B and C’s and then – hey a bottle of wine to top it off, so not at all sure what the results were I am afraid. Next day a much shorter one, and up to some of the ‘berg resort areas which is why we are there. However before heading that way we go up to the Little Switzerland garage for fuel, and suddenly things start going pear shaped. As soon as V twin hits the climb up the pass it goes off song. Won’t pull, and seems starved of LRP, AND YET a quick check shows fuel in ample supply. Manage to make it to the garage thanks to first gear, and there still can’t track the reason. Figure that it’s all downhill from here (in more ways than one) so should at least make the road back to Drakensville – BUT can feel on the way down that it’s pulling strong again in spite of it being downhill. Back on the flat confirms that full power is back and no other problems all day. Now I know you are all going to say it was a temporary blockage, but I have another theory. All you pilots out there will be familiar with carb icing (even those who owned a VW beetle may remember this) well carb icing is an icing condition which can affect any carburettor under certain atmospheric conditions. Carburettor icing occurs when there is humid air, and the temperature drop in the venturi causes the water vapour to freeze. The ice will form on the surfaces of the carburettor throat, further restricting it. This may increase the Venturi effect initially, but eventually restricts airflow, perhaps even causing a complete blockage of the carburettor. Motorcycles can also suffer from carburettor icing, although some engine designs are more susceptible to it than others. Bet you didn’t know I was that clued up did you!? – anyway if it can happen to an air-cooled aircraft engine – why not a motorcycle??. So now that we have finished the science lesson on with the rally.

Fuel stop on the ‘Berg

The ride up to the ‘berg was truly great, and what fantastic scenery. A quick stop for a leg stretch and fuel near the Drakensburg sing along school, and then back to base for more beers/B and C/wine, so don’t remember much about the prize giving either, or who came where, except have a vague recollection of good old Roland NanceKivel on a smoky German bike taking top honours – well done.

Passing thought: Have you heard the one about the sick Chemist?. If you can’t helium and you can’t curium, you’ll probably have to barium… You know you are tired when you try to change to a faster gear in reverse…. A police officer pulled over two nuns riding on a motorcycle, and said to the rider, 'Ma'am, you're driving much too slowly, could you please drive faster?" And the nun says, 'Oh, I saw the sign with the "21" and assumed the speed limit was 21 km/h" The officer explains: 'No ma'am, the speed limit is 80. The highway number is Interstate 21." Then the police officer looks at the passenger and sees the other nun shaking like a leaf. "Excuse me sister, but what's wrong with your passenger?" "Oh, that's probably because we just got off Highway 205."
