April Workshop: Judy Sisneros

Rectangle Pizzazz On Point Judy Sisneros’ goal as a teacher is that each student go

away happy, with a unique quilt - not a copy of everybody

else's in the workshop. Her classes are not complicated and

she hopes students like the quilt well enough to make more

than one. She understands that the most precious gifts we

give (other than our time) are those we make on our sewing

machines. She has taught since early 1993 and has been a

quiltmaker since 1987 and sewed many years before that.

Her book, "9 PATCH PIZZAZZ......Fun, Fast and &

Finished in a Day" came out in March 2006 and has sold over

40,000 copies. Another book "Rectangle Pizzazz" came out in January 2008, featuring five projects

using mostly rectangles. We will be using projects from this book in the workshop on Thursday.

Judy loves conducting a casual, fun and uncomplicated class while encouraging originality and

creativity. Choosing a beautiful focus fabric and three additional high-contrast fabrics, Judy will

guide each student through the “Rectangle Pizzazz On Point” project with the use of large rectangles,

squares and setting triangles. Kits will be available for $55.00 + tax.

OGQG Hosts Council Meeting April 18 The Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds will hold

its quarterly meeting in Garden Grove, hosted by our

Guild, on Saturday April 18 at the Church where we meet, at

9:30 am. The Council meets at alternating sites provided by

hostess guilds to discuss areas of interest to member guilds,

individual members who range from recreational quilters to

professional quilters, and to business members who own or

operate quilt related businesses. SCCQG has 80 member

guilds, from central California, to Baja, Mexico, and east to

Las Vegas. Areas of concern or interest are researched and dis-

cussed, and information is disseminated to guilds through their

representatives and the Council newsletters. We believe this

Council is a valuable resource that links quilt organizations

and resources, and provides a forum for open and positive

communication. It is important that we show the Council what

a great Guild we are, and welcome the visitors. Please attend if

you can, and bring along a treat to share so we can show them

OGQG hospitality in action. Thanks!

There is no doubt in my mind that Spring has sprung. My favorite time of the

year is finally here. Birds are chirping, buds are opening, the sun is shining, the

grass is becoming greener, there is a gentle breeze, and it is absolutely gorgeous

outside. I was able to go out to my garden and cut some beautiful pink roses that

are now on my dining table. My husband has been outside turning the earth,

readying it for vegetable planting. Ooh, yummy!!!! This is the time to put away

the dark colors of winter and bring out the vibrant pastels of Spring. What a glo-

rious time!!!!!! Now is the time to think of light and airy quilts. Maybe the intricacies should

be put aside for the quick and easy. Maybe it is time to take a deep breath and try a new tech-

nique. Watch out, one of those “Braves” might catch you by surprise and delight you along the

way.

Billie Lauder, our Guest Speaker for March was pure delight. Her array of quilts dazzled and

tempted our minds to try something different. Her workshop was a plethora of ideas. She

baited us and we ran with it. According to Billie, there are no mistakes. Sometimes we inad-

vertently snip, what we think will be a disastrous error, but we are rewarded, instead, with a

happy ending. Thank you, Billie, for three fun-filled days.

By the time that you receive this newsletter I will have had the opportunity to go on another

adventure. This will be a photography journey that my husband and I are sharing with about

16 other photographers. We are headed to San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. It is lo-

cated about 170 miles north of Mexico City at an elevation of 6,100 feet. It is a breathtakingly

beautiful colonial city that was founded in 1542. It is a charming city bursting with color.

How my imagination will soar. I hope to get some dazzling images of flowers, unique doors

and windows, or magical buildings that can, someday, be turned into a

lovely art quilt. I am hoping to find at least one quilt/fabric shop so

that I can return home with a tangible treasure of the city. Maybe I

will even stumble upon an antique thimble or two. I suspect that my

mind will be bursting with ideas, both fiber and photographic in nature.

Springtime is the time to awaken our senses, look at the bright new be-

ginnings and delve into projects like never before. As always, “Keep

on Quilting” but try something new and different. Once again, enjoy

your month, but do venture out of your box, even if it is just your little

toe. Give it a try, and be brave enough to share your creation at Show and Tell. Happy quilt-

ing.

Joyce

Several ladies

stepped out of their com-

fort zone last month. Four

of them were awarded

“Braves” for their tenacity.

Linda Majer, usually ma-

chine quilts her quilts trac-

ing pantographs, but this

time she used her machine to free motion feathers

along borders. Sounds like a leap to me. One of our

resident appliqué artists, Thayone Jones, created a

fabric collage “Art Quilt.” Now, that is a stretch!!!!

Pat Kritlow was told that the Block of the Month

Chairperson would never have to speak in front of

the membership. We all saw and heard her, on stage,

at our February meeting. Way to speak up Pat!!!!!

Our Guest Speaker Billie Lauder was given a

“Brave” because She appears to always be trying

new and unique ways, constantly working outside

her box. I do not think that she knows what the in-

side of a box looks like. Way to go ladies, you are

all very BRAVE!!!!!!!

I would like to invite all Guild members to try

something out of their comfort zone at least once or

twice this year. To participate you do not have to

complete a project but you just need to attempt some-

thing new and different. You may decide you like

the technique and therefore, you want to complete it.

You may decide that this new stuff is not your bag,

but at least you tried. You have permission to pass

the uncomfortable project on to someone else, put

your comfy slippers back on and do “your” own

thing. Go ahead, be Brave!!!!!!

Round Robin Rescheduled! Our Round Robin event never happened in March due to Sally McKibben’s unexpected passing. We know

she would want us to continue it, and to think of her as we complete each project. We have a replacement

for Sally in the management of this process—Linda Reese, and she will get the borders rolling at the April

meeting. Remember, as Sally would tell you, the point of this is to challenge your-

self to enhance someone else’s work and have fun. Here are the steps:

1 Give Linda Reese a 12 ½ x 12 ½ -inch block at the beginning of April meet-

ing. The block can be any style, any technique, and any fabrics you wish.

2 Please include extra fabric so the borders will have some continuity, and save

some for yourself to finish the edges.

3 At the break, you receive someone else’s block.

4 You add a border to that block and bring it back to the next meeting. You may

match, coordinate with, or accent the existing colors in the center block, keeping in

mind its basic theme.

5 This repeats in May and June.

6 In August you get back your original block transformed into a beautiful wall hanging! You can then add

more borders or bind it. The guidelines are simple and are included with each bag.

May – SQUARES, APPLIQUÉ, or ANY STYLE Border you wish

June – TRIANGLES, APPLIQUÉ, or ANY STYLE Border you wish

Sweet Irish Mary

Let’s hear it for Mary, our appliqué queen!

Whose gifts and skills are the best we’ve seen

Whose grace and humility amazes us all

Whose complex quilts improve any wall.

Her latest gift makes us gasp in awe!

It’s beautiful, it’s perfect, with nary a flaw.

The lucky winner will own a treasure

An O’Driscoll quilt – worth beyond measure.

How do you thank a quilter like this?

A gift, some flowers, a hug or a kiss?

There’s no way to tell her with adequate praise

How much we appreciate her generous ways!

If ever there was a guild’s quilting fairy

It’s our appliqué legend, sweet Irish Mary!

Thanks to wonderful support from the Guild (as

always), this month's fundraiser took in $113.

were won by Sandi Polizzi and Nancy Henry.

Again, ladies, thank you so much for your contin-

ued support.

In April, I'll have a cute wall hanging of Oriental

children that were machine embroidered by Merci

Apodaca who graciously donated these darling

blocks. Wait till you see 'em!!

UNSUNG HERO—Mary O’Driscoll CONGRATULATIONS to a very quiet and humble

Guild member who constantly

amazes us all. She is not only

an appliqué queen, but she is

very gracious and giving as

well. She single-handedly pur-

chased fabric, appliquéd about

20 blocks, put them together,

hand-basted and prepared the

quilt for quilting, and then de-

cided to donate the quilt to the

Guild so that we can use it

for the 2010 Opportunity

Quilt. This is just an ex-

ample of the many spec-

tacular things that she

does for us. Mary

O’Driscoll is a prize, and

we are so lucky that she is

a member of OGQG.

Thank you Mary, just for

being you.

Welcoming New Members We served a tasty salad luncheon to 17 new mem-

bers recently, and gifted them with fat quarters and

adorable pincushion bunnies made by Ellen Ro-

man. The bunnies were quite a hit, and the day was

fun and worthwhile. The Guild thanks the chair-

women whose efforts made this all possible: Carol

Logue, Lynette Ashton and Linda Gray, Special

appreciation to Ellen for her handiwork. Most offi-

cers attended and explained their roles to the group.

OGQG Mourns Our Good Friend,

VP Sally Diane McKibben Sally McKibben passed away from a heart condition in late February while attending an art quilt retreat in Asilomar. Her death was sudden and shocking to all who knew and loved her. Sally, aka “Cuzzin Sallie Mae,” was an integral part of the Guild, active as an officer for several years, including this year as vice president. She worked overtime on every project, always finding a smile or a word of cheer for those with a need. The hill-billy auction was Sally’s idea and not only did it come to life under her direction, it was an unexpected windfall of financial success. Before her retirement, Sally was a licensed landscape architect who had worked on many large and noted projects. She is the mother of two grown daughters, Emily and Susan, and was married to John for 35 years. In their re-tirement they loved to travel. Sally was an amazingly talented quilter, both art and traditional, and served as a judge for the LA County Fair. She loved to shop, try new things, and unlike so many of us, she remembered what she learned in the work-shops she took! She used those skills to make her award winning quilts. Many quilts adorned the church at her funeral, which was attended by scores of OGQG members, We will miss her beyond words. gw
