Dedication
Whether we wish to admit it or not, we are the future of our ancestors, as our
descendants are our future. We owe our descendants our dreams and bequeath to them the
legacy of our collective accomplishments – nothing more and nothing less. To our
descendants, we charge you with the honoring of your heritage. Your ancestors were hardy
folk, god-fearing and plain spoken, and who recognized that nothing was due them except
that which they themselves earned. They were not ashamed to profess their belief in God,
their country and the American ideal. Of course, there were a few rapscallions in our
collective history, but neither more nor less than in any other family.
We too easily forget what it took to forge a life in a new world, one rife with peril and
with little at hand but a steadfast determination to not only survive but to thrive. Our
ancestors bequeathed us with their genes, aspirations and talents. It is therefore fitting that
the Blandford Series of Yarbrough Family Records be dedicated to them for making it
possible for us to be who we are.
To paraphrase Robert Kincaid1, “The dreams they had were good ones. They didn’t
all come true, but they were worth having, all the same.”
Acknowledgement
The Yarbrough Association is greatly indebted to the vision and efforts of Cathy Y.
Walker and William A. (Bill) Yarbrough, the late president and vice-president of the
YNGHA, respectively, for beginning the project to digitize the 150+ volumes of records
accumulated over the life of the Association. Fulfilment of the project was through the
efforts of a number of officers and members, including Bill’s son Mark, Rachel and Don
Yarbrough, Hal Yarbrough, Jan and Jim Yarbrough, Ann and Al Bush, Elaine and Lyle
Wolf, Joan Y. Singlaub, and Joanne and Bill Augspurger.
It was my privilege to be a part of this dedicated team.

Preface
These records are the legacy of our Yarbrough family researchers, to whom much is
owed. Many of these records were provided by Ophelia Kessler and Frances (Rea) Donohue,
sisters from Texas, who selflessly traveled the states searching for Yarbrough family records.
Others who contributed to our records include Ann Y. Broadbent, Betty Humrighouse, Edna
Yarbrough, Karen Mazock, Evelyn Goble, Mary Y. Daniel, Pauline Gray, Nelle Morris
Jenkins, George A. Yarbrough, Frances Lockwood, Renee Smelley, Edna Yarbrough,
Robert Price Yarbrough, Cleveland “Cy” Yarborough, Jean Baker, Dorothy Svec, and
Jeanette Wilson. The originals of these volumes are being kept for the benefit of future
generations by the Williamson County Library, Franklin, Tennessee.
No claims of accuracy or authentication of the material herein are made or may be
assumed. Many of these records have been superseded by subsequent research. Hence,
there are records which are erroneous and unreliable; it would have been a Herculean task
to attempt to correct all of them. Fortunately, there are only a few critical genealogical
facts that are involved, and which are correctly stated here:
Richard (the Immigrant) Yarborough was never married to Frances Proctor;
Ambrose Yarbrough did not immigrant from Yorkshire; he is now believed to
be a descendant of Richard the Immigrant;
There are so far only two proven sons of Old Richard – John and Richard II;
There is so far no evidence proving Joshua Yarborough I to be a descendant of
Old Richard.
The “Old Country” referred to in old documents and letters is the Colony of
Virginia, not England or the Old World.
There were not seven brothers who immigrated from “the old country”; in
fact, it now appears there were three brothers and four sons of the brothers.
Which were the fathers and which were the sons are so far unknown.
In spite of these inaccuracies, these records comprise much of our history and some of
our accomplishments. There are pages whose print quality is so poor that word recognition
was not possible. In spite of that, at least partial capability for searching these volumes is
provided, as well as an index to each volume. Nonetheless, the viewer is cautioned to
perform his/her own due diligence in connection with any use of this material.
The material contained herein is subject to the copyright laws of the United States.
Material may be freely used by Yarbrough family researchers so long as proper attribution
to the Yarbrough National Genealogical & Historical Association, Inc. is given. This
material, in whole or in part, may not be used for any other purposes without the express
written permission of the Yarbrough National Genealogical & Historical Association.
We welcome the submission of any Yarbrough family information that can be added to
our growing data base. More information about the extended Yarbrough families can be
found at our website, http://www.yarbroughfamiy.org. If you are a Yarbrough or a
member of one of our allied families, we invite you to join our family association.

Yarbro son of Henry and Delilah but she spells it Yarbrough instead of Yarbr~. In some of the ~fo.f:d~.t&~~s spelled Yarbrour,h and some it is Yarbro. I think it is the same. In tfiose days so many couldn't write and the recorders spelled the name like they thought it sounded and it often stuck with the family •

Dear &l:
Sorry it has taken so long to get the pictures to you.
As I told you, I did not order the coat of arms from <ln <~dvertist-'llent, or coat of arms factory as l c~ll th~m - I spent considerable ti~e and lni money h~ving it thoroughly researched by authorities - it iscorrect in evAry detail. Recently Jane and I visited the N.C. State
'Archivesand examined the Yarbrough coat of arms on file there ... theirs is identical to the one we have.
About Riehard Yarbrough's grave stone: I have communicated with Dr, James Bailey of Blandford Church and have found him to be enthusiastic about our efforts to correct it for ha is aware that the stone is now in error. Dr. Bailey secured permission for our correction of the ston~ fro~ tho superintendent of Blandford Cemetery and the Petersburg Dept. of Tourism. Then I asked Arlie Andrews a Petersburg stone engraver to proceed with the work- then the roof fell in. Andrews examined the fr<~gile 278'year old sandston~ marker and told Dr. Bailey tqat he was so afraid to work on it he would'nt touch it with a forty foot pole. Now Andrews and Dr. Bailey suggest that we purchase a n.,w and correct stone ~nd mount it behind the old sto~e. I cant buy that idea - it would detract and compete ._.,ith the old stone. I suggest that we put our messege on a Modest hronze pl<~que, mount it on a granite slab, and place it flush with the ground in front of the old stonft. I know Dr. Bailey will go along with this suggestion. wbat do you think ? I would like to have your opinion.
Did I tell you that I com~issioned the College of Arms to search their files and prepare a fa~i~ chart of the Yarbroughs 7 I finally received the chart and found that the given name EDHutm -.ppeared five times among the descendents of Eustacious de Yarburg. And according to thA College of Arms Eustacious was the daddy r-.bbit of all us Yarbroughs (all spellings).
EdmWld Yarburg, Esquire, born ca. 1545 -- married Hargaret, daughter of Sir. Vincent Grantham.
::.dmund Yarburgh of Balore Hall, County York, born ca. 1571 -- married Sarah, daughter and coheir of Thomas Wormeley.
Edmund Y~rburgh of Doncaster, County York, Doctor of Physics, born 1625 -- M~rried Anne, daughter of Thomas Stanhope, County York, son of Sir. John Stanhope.
ml~und Yk1SROUUH, born ca. 1660. The ~hart does'nt say who Edmund m~rriod or wh~n hft died. The chart doas reveal a startling fact; Edmund •nd his ~rothers Richard and Sir Thomas were the first men of our line to

spell the name YARBROUGH. One nephew, Thomas Yarbrough continued with the new spelling, others held to the Yarburgh spelling. I h~ve·strong reasons to believe that this Richard Yarbrough (Edmund's brother) was the Richard who came to the Virginia Colony and was buried on Well's Hill at Blandford. ·
Nicholas Edmund Yarburgh of Heslington, County York, Esquire, born 1771, died without issue'1852.

Dear lA'.r. Yarbrough:
I failed to ask what exactly you were searching for, but I assume you are . searching the parentage of John Yarbrough. It's difficult for me to make ·genealogy clear and understandable in a letter, but let's try.
In the year 1800 an Flimond Yarbrough appeared in iiecklenburg County and acquir~d land on Waxhaw Creek. In 182) and 18)0 a ~. James, and Henr,y Yarbrough acquired land on Waxhaw Creek, and this time span of 2) to JO years indicates that ~. James, and Henry were the sons of ~ond. This covey of Yarbroughs were settled around the headwaters of Waxhaw Creek, which is about 10 miles south west of present Monroe, N.C. The ~ who purchased land in 18)0 from James Yarbrough must be your man f~r he was the only John3 Yarbrough in Mecklenburg at the right time. It looks like James was Johns elder brother.
Searching through old copies of the dYarborough Family Magazined I found a querie (copy enclosed) concerning ~mond Yarbrough who lived in Mecklenburg County - his son ~ is listed in the querie.
It is evident that ~~s. McElrath and ~~s. Heaner have researched the same Yarbrough family line that you are seeking. If you will write to these people I am sure they will be glad to share their finds ~ith you. If the two women who submitted the querie are not now at their 1967 address let me know and possibly I can locate them.
I think it is certain that Edmond Yarbrough was the father of your John, but you will be mighty luc~ if you learn the parentage of Edmond - - I am not saying it is impossible.
The querie says that Edmond was born in Anson County, N.C. about 1762. This gives us four possibilities for there were onls four Yarbroughs in Anson at that time. These are the earliest records I have found. Richard Yarbrough appeared in Anson and bought land ontLittle Creek at the Rock,y River, 28 October 1756. Joel Yarbrough appeared in Anson, and bought from Richard Yarbrough part of the tract he had acquired, 25 Januar.y 1757. I dont know about Richard, but I do know there are good reasons to think that Joel came to Anson from Culpepper County, Va.. Two brothers lllfiiiXlKX Jonath~ (~ gr-gr-gr-gr), and Humphrey~Yarbrough removed from Culpepper Co. Va. to Anson County and first appeared in the 176) tax list. They were bachelor brothers, and listed as a family of two. We know these two men were of the Ambrose line and they settled on Lanes Creek at the Rocky River about two-miles from Richard and Joel. The four men were probably kinsmen. If I was searching for Edmond's parent I think I would concentrate first on Richard and Joel.
If you have questions, I will be glad to attempt answers.

Dear l·fr. Yarborough :
Recently I stumbled on a find that may be of interest to you.
4 June 1771, rlilliam HcCorkle and wife Ester of .Heckl.,nburg to Thomas Presley of same, for 20 pounds *** 200 acres on waters of Nortb Fork of Waxhaw Creek, including Humphrey Yarboroughs improvements, and joining lands of John Davis, Beards, patended 16 December 1769 ••• William }fcCorkle (Seal), EsterMCCorkle (E) (Seal). Witness: John Davies, Henry Yarbrough, John Crockett. Recorded October term 1771. (Hecklenburg deed book N0.5, Pp. 189-190)
Henry and Humphrey are the earlYest Yarbroughs I have yet found in the Waxhaw Creek area. This may be. a wild-g_oose chas.e, ~u_t_probably_ worth pursueing; ·
Tracers of the Edmund line say that he was born in Anson County. Prior to 1765 the tiaxhaw area was in Anson County.
We know th~t it is very unlikely that Humphrey Yarbrough was Edmund's father. In 1772 Humphr~y (~ gr.gr.gr.gr. uncle) received a grant for land in Anson County at the Junction of Lanes Creek and Rocky River. His children were raised in that area, and later scattered to Georgia, Alabama, lftssissippi, and Tennessee.
But, the Henry Yarbrough is interesting. I have been told that Edmond named a son.Henry. As you know it was custornary in those days for a man to name a son for his father. If Henry was a young man·at the time he signed the deed he would be in th9 right age bracket to have a son who began acquiring land in the same area in 1800. Edmond's sons began acquiring land in the same area a generation later.
Hope this information will be of help, and not confuse the is,sue.

Dear Charlie:
Looks like my plans to attend the National Yarbrough Family Conference in Salt Lake City are not going to materialize. There will have to be lots of improvement between now and then if I do!! To make a long story short and brief: surgery on back followed two months later with surgery on hand in 2 areas coupled with the expected arrival of a new grandchild about 27 June have Qepleted me physically and financial!.
So--I'm sending a contribution toward newsletter and hope to be able to send more later.
I had really been looking forward to seeing those of you I know again and meeting new "cousins".
The enclosed material does not have the index to my 1900 Soundex but I just haven't been able to sit at the typewriter long enough to finish it. I hope these materials may be helpful to those not having access to our Texas records.
Enclosed are a couple of obituaries and a copy of the will of JOSEPH GOSWICK. You may already have it and if you do, please pass it on to someone else.
I do hope someone can come up with EDEMUND YARBROUGH's father. I am having absolutley no luck in that field. Also I am still trying to find the parents of Mary who married William, son of Edmund.
I have made many Family Group Sheets about Yarbroughs in Texas, many of whom I cannot identify in relation to Ancestors. I had planned to bring those notebooks with me but that will have to wait until another time. If I get to where I can use my hand and wrist better, I may get them copied· and will send them direct to Salt Lake City if I do. I'll be happy to search these pages and share with anyone who asks.
I've stayed at the typewriter too long and pain is getting worse so I'll close until another time.
Please don't forget me! And please give my greetings to all.
Sincerely.

Searching for Indexed Terms1
First, find the name or phrase (search term) in the index. Then, from the menu bar, select
“Edit”, and then “Find” or press CTRL+F. A search field will appear in the upper right corner of
the page. Enter the search term into this field and press ENTER. If the search term is not
found, nothing will happen; otherwise, the search term will be displayed on the first page
in which it occurs. Repeated pressing of the ENTER key will high-light other occurrences
within the file. Use the left and right arrow buttons to the right of the search field to look
ahead or to look backwards for other occurrences of the term in the document
A directory (folder) or even an entire hard drive may also be searched2. First, high-light the
selected folder or drive and then press SHIFT+CTRL+F to obtain a listing of all the files in
which the search term appears. Next, select and open an individual file to find the first
occurrence of the search term(s) in the file, as described in the preceding paragraph.
Index
1 In order for the search feature of Adobe Acrobat© Reader to be enabled, a certain level of document
legibility is required. That is, post-scanning processing cannot overcome poor print quality of an original
document. With this caveat, each volume has been made searchable by Adobe Acrobat, version 9 or later.
2 This may take quite some time, depending on the size of files contained therein.
