Where once were eggs and feathers, now are shelves of build-ing blocks, alphabet books and dress-up clothes. The Caspar Children’s Garden preschool began twenty-five years ago in a converted chicken coop. From these humble beginnings grew a treasure of the North Coast, now looking for a new home.

Caspar Children’s Garden is outgrowing its facility. They are looking for an existing building to adapt, or a site where a new school can be built to last another twenty-five years and beyond. A waiting list of families requires new buildings to support the school’s “play-based curriculum” that parents say is crucial for developing the emotional intelligence of children. Caspar Children’s Garden teachers emphasize co-operation, problem-solving and just becoming good human beings. The preschool wants to add a badly needed infant care program.

The current location will be hard to replace. The first thing you notice entering the gate are shafts of light through a

stand of magnificent Monterey cypress trees. A graceful wooden arched bridge spans a frog pond surrounded by a landscape of lawn, mature rhododendrons and flowering trees. The romantic setting makes an indelible impression before you notice the school itself. It couldn’t look less institutional. Expansive play yards surround a rustic redwood classroom building. At first glance, a building with more charm than insulation.

The classroom building has a colorful history. Originally built as a chicken coop, in the sixties it became the Cadillac Pipe Factory, where ornate glass, copper, and enamel pipes were made. In 1978, the land was purchased by two physicians: Peter Barg and his partner, Jacques Tenzel. They built the McCornack Center for the Healing Arts, a holistic health clinic that brought together medical practitioners of many disciplines, from surgery to shiatsu. One long July Fourth weekend, community members pitched in free labor and materials to build what Dr. Barg calls “a healing arts center that was a showcase for the world.” In return, those volunteers got free health care for life.

Soon the College of the Redwoods was holding classes there in alternative health-care. When College of the Redwoods moved to its present location, Dr. Barg says, “The Caspar Children’s Garden, looking for a place to open, was a perfect fit for the com-munity emphasis of the compound.”

I spent several days there visiting. Watching those young children, blazing with ener-gy and hungry to learn, made me want to go back to preschool. Watching the teachers, with their dazzling ability to channel youthful energy into learning, gave me a profound respect for the noble and underpaid people who make early childhood education their profession.

Presently, a staff of eight teaches children from fifty families. Parent after parent told me they appreciate the school’s emphasis on developmentally appropriate, play-based learning over rote bookwork.

“The teachers give the kids tools so they learn to solve problems themselves, which serves them well later in life,” says Hillary Schneider, whose son Samson is her third child to attend Caspar Children’s Garden. “The teachers are kind and insightful, and take the time to tune in to each child. Their approach is more positive and free-flowing than the regimented style of other preschools.”

Christie Olson Day knows a thing or two about learning. She’s the owner of the Gallery Bookshop in Mendocino. Two of her kids, now eight and eleven, are Caspar

“In teacher directed learning, for example, teachers put out paper and crayons and say, ‘this is what we’re doing today.’ In child-directed learning, teachers create the environment, and the kids decide what to do in it. Here there’s no assigned art, but there are always a couple of easels stocked with paint. Kids paint when they feel like painting.”

While we’re talking, two boys have an altercation involving shovels and wood chips. Sandra watches Julia redirect the boys to other activities. “In most schools, which are more regimented, the boys would have been pulled apart, removed from the area and sat down in a time-out. Here the teachers use communication and redirection really well.”

Sandra told me she has been particularly impressed with Teacher Julia. “She’s phe-nomenal––her articulation, the way she interacts with the kids. She’s always cheerful and upbeat.”

She also pointed out Teacher Dennis. “There aren’t a lot of men in this field. And the kids flock to him. Men let children play very differently.”

To the untrained eye it looks like pandemonium in the play-yard. Every area bustles. But watch for a while and you’ll see organization behind the chaos. Teachers play a zone defense, and no kid is unobserved. Teacher Beth pushes kids on the swings. Julia, putting out boy-fires on the slide, shares the wisdom of taking turns. In another corner of the yard, Dennis keeps an eye on a pretend pot-luck game, while helping a flock of boys with a game of Noodles. It’s impossible to describe, but hysterical. School Director Diana Taur, floating around, keeps her eye on everybody.

Children’s Garden graduates. “Arriving is a magical moment for the child,” she said. “It’s the most beautiful preschool in the world. Caspar Children’s Garden is a real com-munity asset, and if they need some support from our community to move to a new location I hope we give it to them.”

I’m struck by the freedom children have. When Molly arrives at school, swinging her lunch bag through the school gate, she and her mom are greeted by Julia Usher, the co-director and head teacher. After Molly hangs up her jacket, the classroom is hers. Many choices beckon. Kids sit at one table with the morning’s project––it involves tree leaves, paper and glue––and another table with that preschool standby, homemade play-doh. There are painting easels and paint, building blocks, and a cage of walking stick bugs. There are six hands on the piano keyboard as kids plunk along with Teacher Dennis on a tune that sounds familiar. Somehow there’s room in the classroom for an indoor swing and slide, and Molly can choose free play too.

Molly is soon wearing a feather boa, a fireman’s hat, and a sequined cape from the dress-up corner. She calls to her friend Tina to come play, but Tina is engrossed in a puzzle. Soon Molly with the hat and cape and Tina are bent together over the puzzle. I’d like to join them to catch some dialog for this story, but my big rear end isn’t designed for those little chairs.

The Caspar preschool is all about choices—and Teacher Julia leads staff into provid-ing them. She’s going on her nineteenth year at Caspar Children’s Garden and her big open heart can handle anything.

“A good teacher will be flexible to make teaching moments around the children’s interests and choices. If they’re interested in dinosaurs, we’ll make fossils from sand and water. We’ll bury cow bones and dig them up as dinosaur bones. We have projects prepared in advance for the day, but we’re always ready to change gears to meet the children’s interests.”

Caspar preschool teachers encourage children to play outside, good weather or bad. Over Julia’s shoulder, the sandbox is a hive of activity. Pedro is trying to feed sand to a hobby horse. Three girls––can there really be that many shades of pink?––dig for glass marbles secretly hidden by teachers.

From a corner, Sandra Mix watches the play-yard with an unusual perspective. San-dra is a twenty-year veteran preschool educator who has moved to Fort Bragg from Oregon. Coming from out-of-state, she must take beginning classes in early childhood education to satisfy California licensing requirements, which is like asking Willie Mays to play Little League. Sandra is studying play-based curriculum, and observing Caspar Children’s Garden for class credit. Her comments carry a lot of weight.

“It’s so different from where I’ve worked. There is less structure at Caspar Children’s Garden. Children have more freedom. Coming from schools where activities are more teacher-directed, I was worried about the child-directed approach when I first began observing. But I quickly saw the quality of the kids’ interaction with each other, and with the teachers. They’re learning good social skills and problem-solving.”

Hundreds of families have received great child care in this enchanting and rustic preschool, and it is hoped many will attend this silver anniversary party for the Caspar Children’s Garden to share stories and honor the teachers.

You’re Invited to the Silver Anniversary Birthday Bash for

Caspar Children’s Garden!

There will be lots to eat and do on Sunday,

April 22, at the Caspar Community Center —

starting at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast and a plant

sale. Then the party begins, as we celebrate the

twenty-fifth anniversary of the Caspar Children’s

Garden. There will be a bounce house, face

painting and games, a family talent show at

noon, silent auction, a raffle for $500 in food

certificates, and birthday cake at 2:00 p.m.

Hundreds of families have received great child

care in this enchanting and rustic preschool,

and it is hoped many will attend this silver

anniversary party for the Caspar Children’s

Garden to share stories and honor the teachers.

It is up to the current generation to help create

a new space for the next, as the old school is

wearing out while the need for early childhood

education is growing. Help us honor the past

and pledge to the future of a fresh children’s

garden somewhere special in Caspar. For infor-

mation, contact Diana Taur, 961-0239.

Julia is non-stop, moving seamlessly from a crisis over a princess’ crown to enthusi-asm for a beautiful somersault, and then to the slide, to comfort a boy who banged his leg. Tears. He’s inconsolable, until another child brings him an ice-pack. That’s a perfect transition for him to join the Teddy Bear Clinic, where kids with stethoscopes and band-aids patch up some wounded bears.

Just when the mayhem peaks, teachers call a break for small-group time. Calm falls on Caspar Children’s Garden, and through the cypress trees you can hear sea lions barking. Inside, under a huge paper whale, kids jostle for lap space as Dennis performs the voices when he reads The Large and Growly Bear. The kids growl with him, and their expressions light up the room.

In the kitchen, six boys and girls join Teacher Beth around a table. They color upper and lower case R’s while they sing to the Red Robot Song. And do the Robot Dance.

Then its lunch time. It’s happy and busy––a rare time during the day when all the kids and teachers, eating around small tables in the kitchen, are together. From potato chips to free-range couscous, the diversity of lunch food reflects the diverse backgrounds of the Caspar Children’s Garden families.

Diana Taur, the school’s director, campaigns for play-based education. Before com-ing to Caspar, she taught preschool children in San Francisco, Ann Arbor, Gothenburg, Sweden, and Tallinn, Estonia, where she was born and raised. She’d blush if you said so, but she’s as passionate an advocate for young children as there is in the county.

Diana points to studies that show the effectiveness of play-based education which combines hands-on learning with child-initiated play. That research is mostly ignored, she says. California’s state standards expect kindergarteners to master many academ-ic skills related to literacy and math. Increasingly we expect our children to start read-

ing in kindergarten. Diana worries about that academic pressure. “Young children need time to play together. We know that through play they learn to regulate their behavior and emotions. They will need problem solving skills to be successful in kindergarten.”

According to researchers, children who read at age five do no better in the long run that those who learn at six or seven.

I become a believer that Caspar Children’s Garden needs a new facility when I see Diana, bundled in coat, scarf and mittens, typing in the old toolshed she calls her office. It’s fine, she lies, pointing to the never-ending freeze of the Estonian winter. When she meets a parent in her tiny office, their knees touch.

The chicken coop classroom building has seen better days, and Diana says we can do better for our kids. “I dream of a space that is designed for educating young children. We’d like to have a proper kitchen for preparing meals. We need a heated space for teacher breaks, and meetings with parents. We’ll need separate space for our infant care program, and yes, plenty of land for outdoor play and exploration.”

“We’ll hate to leave this extraordinary site, but we really need to move where we can grow to meet our expanding program needs.”

Caspar Children’s Garden is inviting the community to celebrate the school’s twenty-fifth birthday, noon, April 22 at Caspar Community Center. (See sidebar on page 3)

“We seek pledges toward a land trust that can secure property where a new Caspar Childen’s Garden could develop along with other projects of benefit to the Caspar com-munity. We seek partners to help design, finance and build an even more enchanting preschool. This process has begun and fortunately has no deadline…

“Also, we now have waiting lists of families needing child care. Let’s grow to meet these needs,”says Skip Taube, Caspar Children’s Garden board president. REM
