This week at LCHS is Sir William Blackstone Week.

Sir William Blackstone was an English jurist, whose opus,Commentaries on the Laws of England, is the best-knowndescription of the doctrines of English law. A modern study revealedthat Commentaries was cited nearly 10,000 times by Americancourts between 1789 and 1915, and became the basis of universitylegal education in England and North America. Among otherdeclarations, Blackstone wrote in Commentaries that there are threeprimary personal rights: personal security, personal liberty, andright of private property.

From Mr. Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

Fidelity to LibertyBy: Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

The philosophy of Liberty Common entails maintaining fidelity to its core academicmission. Whether here, or at any school, such attentiveness makes a tremendousdifference in whether a school’s students succeed over time.

The virtue of fidelity is itself worthy of emphasis, too. Though not enumerated among ourschool’s designated “Foundation Stones” or “Capstone” virtues, fidelity stems from fortitudeand is nonetheless among the several virtues to which we expect our students will adhere.

In fact, exhibiting fidelity in vital matters is a sign of firmness of character and fitness ininternalizing virtues necessary to live the good life. Just as preserving the concept of libertyrequires fidelity to one’s many obligations, sustaining the wellbeing of our Liberty CommonSchool requires fidelity to the foundational principles defining it.

This is especially true as the schoolimproves and matures. In the face ofthese and all such expeditions, fidelityis an indispensible virtue. It is a

Page 9: Volume 21, Issue 33- May 7, 2018 Liberty Common …hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File...have questions, please send an e-mail to Domus Justitiae House Captains

character quality indicating focus, adherence to principle, steadfastness, and loyalty.

The United States Marine Corps mottoSemper Fidelis fixes on the Latin rootfrom which we derive the wordfidelity. It’s noteworthy that the mostversatile warrior branch of the world’smost proficient military force rallies tothe dictum of faithfulness andfidelity. No military motto is morerecognized than the Corps’ “SemperFi” – Always Faithful!

Fidelity is a concept packed with meaning and import. Fidelity is often associated withobligation and commitment – perhaps to one’s spouse and family, to an agreement, acontract, oaths and duties, to one’s faith.

Courage is a co-agent to fidelity. For example, when adhering to the truth means a howlingreproach, many find the necessary valor too difficult to summon.

To be sure, it takes real commitment and heroism to consistently demonstrate fidelity. Beingliterally “always faithful” is indeed a virtue of extraordinary high order.

Fidelity demands more than abstaining from bad behavior, as in avoiding infidelity. It is ratherthe sum of smaller daily actions we undertake deliberately through conscientiousconsideration.

Such actions include our attentiveness in school, our thoroughness when dealing with ourwork, how we dress, being on time, fulfilling charity, expressing gratitude, and all othersimilar examples. Fidelity in smaller matters of our daily experience informs our temperamentfor bigger responsibilities and virtuous leadership.

As the school year winds to an end, it’s an especially important time to reinforce daily thenotion that fidelity to our school’s academic philosophy, and to our “Capstone” and“Foundation-Stone” virtues prepares our young scholars well to live the good life. Ingrainingthese values throughout the smaller matters of a student’s upbringing leads to principledleadership on an American scale.

Fidelity fortifies Liberty, and liberty, now and always.

job planning this sea-worthy event. DT leaders would like to thank all the teachers andparents that helped make this prom successful, especially Mrs. Hofinger, Mrs.Rohrbaugh, Ms. Miller, and Mrs. Reinke.

Tardy Violations. Despite the best of intentions, tardiness interferes with studentlearning. Late arrivals interrupt the learning environment and daily classroomprocedures. Being tardy will be handled in a serious manner. The school’s starting signalsounds promptly at 7:45 a.m. At that moment, classroom doors are closed, instructionbegins and the student academic day is fully underway. Students arriving after the bell ringsare considered tardy and must be checked in at the front desk. Checking students in at thefront desk does not guarantee the tardy will be excused. An unexcused tardy will result in aconduct violation.

An “excused tardy” includes but is not limited to a tardy due to unavoidable medicalappointments or hazard-related problems. These include unavoidable doctor appointmentsor emergencies, traffic accidents, unforeseen traffic barriers that cause multiple families toarrive late, family emergencies, or extreme hazardous weather.

Classical Manners for the Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-schooltextbook "Good Manners" usedin "Household Science" class ofthat day:

“Rule No. 38. Cooperation. Help ifyou can. In homes where the familydoes the work without hired help, findout what you can do to assist. It may behelping with dishes or setting the table.Surely you should make your bed andkeep your room in order. While yourfriend is busy, amuse yourself with a

book, magazine, or letter. If there are younger members of the family, be patient withthem. Read to them, or try to amuse them, so that your hostess will be free of extraworry.”

Plagiarism and Cheating Admonishment. As the semester draws to a close, it isimportant for students to reflect on the benefits of an honest and honorable approach totheir academic endeavors. There have been moments in the past at this time of year whenstudents have made moral compromises stemming from a lack of preparedness orunhealthy ambitions which have resulted in academic and disciplinary consequences. Wewant to take a moment to remind students to be extra vigilant with regard to exercisingacademic integrity, and to encourage parents to consider addressing these issues at homebefore students find themselves in the midst of temptation at school.

Also, below is a brief description of the school’s definition of plagiarism as well as theschool policy on how such situations are handled. Best wishes to all students as they striveto complete their coursework in an exemplary and noble fashion.Plagiarism, as defined by the English department, means presenting the work (ideas, words, phrasings, graphs, tables, images, etc.) of someone else as if it were your own. Anythoughts or language not your own and not common knowledge needs to have beenproperly cited (according to MLA format). A student must give credit to the originality ofothers and acknowledge an indebtedness whenever:

1. Directly quoting another person’s actual words, whether oral or written;2. Using another person’s ideas, opinions, or theories;3. Paraphrasing the words, ideas, opinions, or theories of others, whether oral or

written;4. Borrowing facts, statistics, or illustrative material; or5. Offering materials assembled or collected by others in the form of projects or

collections without acknowledgement. [i]

Cheating, copying, and plagiarism (presenting someone else’s words or ideas as thoughthey were your own) are serious offenses that violate the mutual trust that is essential to theeducational process. They will not be tolerated, excused, or overlooked. Students caughtcheating, copying, or plagiarizing will automatically fail the assignment and be referred to theadministration for disciplinary action.________________________________________[i] Definition and parameters of plagiarism derived from the Indiana University website.
