A message from the President:
Well, with Winter and the off season here there isn’t much to report on.
Janine has taken steps to organise a training clinic with Richard Webb from
Australia. Richard takes an excellent clinic and it is well worth attending. It
is early days yet, but it is envisaged that we will hold weekend schools in both the North and South
Islands late January/early February. Of course, it will rely on numbers for it to happen so please
contact Janine or Melissa if you are interested.
There has been a request for copies of the Australian Rule Book. Christine contacted the office in
Australia, and it appears that they will not be printing an updated hard copy in the meantime as a
sub-committee is currently re-writing/formatting the book to make it more website user friendly and
interactive. The current 2019 NCHA Rule Book can however be downloaded from their website. As
there are so many changes happening all the time to the rules, they feel the books are out of date
before they are printed and are moving toward members using the online version. Helen has gone
through the rules that have been changed or amended for our situation here in New Zealand and it is
hoped that they will be available to you soon.
We are only required to hold a Judges Clinic every two years but if anyone is interested in obtaining
their Judges ticket meantime please contact me and we will see what we can organise. With Spring
approaching we are also always looking for people to join our Cattle Scheme in one way or another.
If you feel you can help contribute, please don’t hesitate to contact me. This Scheme is vital for the
Association and has been well supported by just a few dedicated people for a long time. A big thank
you to those who participate, it is greatly appreciated.
Stay safe & warm and keep away from any flu viruses.
Regards
Craig
NOTICES
Hi Everyone, we are having issues with scammers emailing pretending to be our
president, where they write that you need to contact them urgently or similar,
which once you reply they ask you to purchase things on behalf.. This is no way is
our president and if he needs to contact you, he will ring.
Tips: if you hover over the name at the top of the email, it will bring up the email
address. (most of the time it will look strange - best to highlight and send to junk mail)
2019/2020 Membership renewal forms have been sent out if you have missed this
you can also find the form at the back of this Chatter or contact Christine Cowdrey.
Richard Webb Clinic
Open to all NZCHA members Proposed dates: North Island - 18th/19th January or 1st/2nd February
South Island - 25th/26th January or 8th/9th February
We may look to have a 3day clinic in the North due to numbers. This would incorporate a Friday as well.
Richard specialises in training Non-Pro rider Training and getting good results.
He is a very positive Trainer.
Cost will be dependant on numbers, Bearing in mind that we have to cover Richards Fee and his flights.
Can we please have a final register of interest by the 20th AUGUST 2019 to kick
things into action. Could you please also indicate your preferred weekend.
Any queries or you wish to register your interest please contact
Melissa or Janine
(contact details can be found on page 2)

Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity.—Kahlil Gibran
A new challenge keeps the brain kicking and the heart ticking - E.A Bucchianeri
5 Minutes with
Richard Webb of FORT WEBB
How did you become involved in the sport of cutting?
I witnessed the sport of cutting in America while I was in the states as a
young fellow competing in the rodeo circuit and I loved what I saw.
Realizing that my shelf life in rodeo was going to be short I travelled back to
Australia to pursue cutting.
What do you enjoy most about Cutting?
To ride a well-trained cutting horse is something only a few people will ever
experience.
The thrill is such a special feeling more so when you are in total control.
Where do you base yourself from and how many people in your team?
Our training facility is located at Illabo, southern NSW in Australia. I think there may be only one person
in NZ that would know where that is! I run the business with my partner Gillian and we usually have one
girl helping on a full-time basis however often we have a few other girls that come from time to time
each year in holidays from university or from livestock colleges and help out too.
Who has been the most influential person in your style of training?
I honestly don’t think I could say that there is only one person but over the years I have studied many
trainers and trialled many techniques to come up with a style I am comfortable with……...but I am always
still learning.
What is the most important quality you want to have in a horse and why?
I want a horse that is very confident with and around me first and foremost. The breeding will look after
the cow, trainability, balance and the rest of the requirements.
How many horses do you have in work on average?
Normally around 15-20 which includes 2 year old's, aged event
and show horses.
What do you love most about being a horse trainer?
EVERYTHING!! I feel very humbled to show great horses, travel
this great country. . (and yours .. thank you for the invitation)
and to meet so many wonderful people.
What do you dislike most about being a horse trainer?
Trying to get into my bed, late at night after drinks in NZ, only to find that your bed has been short
sheeted!!! Or when you get home and realise your socks have been sown up and your shirt sleeves sown
together!! J I don’t dislike anything.

Judging Rule 4
Credit will be given for setting up a cow
and holding it in a working position as
near the centre of the arena as possible.
From a Judges perspective:
-credit will be given for a cow that travels but is
still controlled in the centre third of the arena.
-you may receive a minus in the degree of
difficult box for a cow that is soft and quiet for
example; does not travel and remains a bit dull.
Tip: Select a cow that has a bit of liveliness to it,
that wants to challenge the horse but still allow it
to be controlled in a eye pleasing manner which
this will help you gain extra points.
5 minutes with Richard Webb
Who is your biggest motivator/support and why?
I have wonderful support from my partner, Gillian, (who is typing this for
me so I have to say that) and all the staff that have worked for me over
the years. When it comes to showing my horses I am very
self-motivated.
What other profession would you like to try and why?
I have tried many over the years only to realise that training horses and teaching people is my vocation.
What is the best horse you have ever trained?
A mare called Senna’s Double Fortyniner that I finialed in the NCHA open futurity and won many open
cuttings on and also her first foal Senna’s One Spin who I am currently still showing.
Who is your favourite stallion? And why does this stallion stand out for you the most?
Seligman Spin: I was privileged to ride Seligman to many great wins but none better than to run off and
win against the great mare, One Hellofa Spin in the open cutting at the Victorian futurity and also winning
the classic challenge at the same show.
For Non-Pro riders training their own horses what is one vital
piece of advice you can offer?
I suggest find a trainer that you like the way that their horses work and try
to associate yourself somehow with that trainer to work out a
programme that you can put yourself on and stick to it. Once you grasp
the concept of training a horse to a certain level then you can look outside
the circle to broaden your knowledge. Too many Non-Pros try to take on
too much and too many varied opinions early in their cutting career
causing way too much confusion and frustration.
