SHIRDI DAIRY BY SHRI G.S. KHAPARDE 1910, 13 December Tuesday Manmad-Akola.

I & my son Baba got into the Punjab Mail, and secured seats in a compart-

ment with some trouble by the help of a ticket collector. There were two Gu-

jaratis going to Akola and an aiya who was accompanying an English lady

going to Calcutta side. We had to sit up all the way up to Bhusaval which we

reached about midnight & changed into the Nagpur passenger. We met Hira-

lal ticket collector there & stood talking with him for a few minutes. I & Baba

lay down and slept up to Akola where we got down about 5 A.M. and drove

to Vyankateshar Desai ‟s Bungalow at Umbri. He has extended &made it very

comfortable. He & his family, Mahipat, Narayan, & children were very glad

to see me. Vyankatesh Hundiwala with his uncle Yashavantrao are also here

& very glad to meet me.

I had an early bath & lay down. Vyankatesh went to the Bar dinner which was

held at the Indian Club. I had a late breakfast and lay down again after it. To-

wards evening Bapusaheb Phadke, Hatwalne, Dada Khunzode, Gupte, Paran-

jape all pleaders came to see me, & we all sat talking. I was very sorry to

learn that Dada Soman & Madhavarao Vaidya are dead. They were very old

friends. Hatwalne is a new L.L.B., now practicing. He is a Jahagirdar of Lu-

pali in Malkapur Taluk. Wapudeo Narayan Joshi who is the chief constable

here came to see me & enquired about the duration of my stay. It is only for a

day. After they all went, I had some milk with Vyankatesh. We propose to

retire early.

SAI’S NEWS FROM TIME MACHINE Laxmibai Shinde was the only woman permitted to enter Dwarkamai at night.

She was also the one whom Sri Sai Baba referred to as His "mother-in-law"

because she had surrendered her mind, [“her "daughter” ] fully to Him. There

was no differentiation, surrender was quite complete so she was deemed wor-

thy of the dakshina from Him of the nine coins, depicting the nine forms of

bhakti. Restrictions can apply only when there is that wall of differentiation

between Him and us.

A HUMBLE TRIBUTE OF PRAISE TO SHRI SAINATH

Look, in the realm of the sun,

The festival of DEEPAVALI has come ;

But to celebrate it ,

What shall be the means ? …106

To quench the ocean's

Thirst, adequate water cannot be found on earth;

To warm the fire

From where will the heat be found ? …107

All articles needed for the worship

Are filled with your essence;

from the beginning, they are part of you,

Oh, SHREESAMARTHA GURURAYA ! …108

All my talk is a philosophical statement,

for I have not experienced its truth.

I have spoken with out experience,

A meangingless maze of words. …109

If ritualistic worship

Of you, is to be performed by me,

To do that I have no wherewithal‟s,

My SAMARATHA GURURAYA ! …110

Mostly, with the help of my imagination only

Will I worship you.

That worship itself, oh compassionate one,

Do accept from this slave. …111

Now with my tears

I bathe your feet;

The sandalwood of true devotion

I make into paste and apply. …112

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE

DEVOTEES CORNER

Sairam.

For about 17 years from my 19th year, I was a victim to fits. I had recourse

to all kinds of medicines and charms, but it was all of no avail. Many people

who knew my trouble began their conversation with me in friendly and sym-

pathetic attitude only to play upon my credulity and to rob me of hundreds of

rupees. There is no exaggeration if I should say that I had wasted nothing

less than about Rs.1500 on all these treatments and charms, and that I de-

rived no benefit there from. On the other hand, sometimes, I was in a worse

state of health after the treatments an would wish that I might resume my

previous state of health.

At last about two years back an old friend of mine gave me a little of Sri Sai

Baba‟s Udhi and advised me to leave off all useless medicines etc,. and cast-

ing the entire burden of anxieties and worries that was troubling me on to Sri

Sai Baba, to worship Him to release me fro my troubles. Immediately I be-

gan to offer worship to Sri Sai Baba. I must admit here that it was not with

any real faith in Sri Sai that I did so, but only with the hope that I might be

released from my trouble.

But, though Sri Sai knew the actual extent and nature of my faith in Him, out

THE DREAMS TRAIN

(Dreams Of Saibanisa after Undergoing Bypass Surgery on 17-5-1996)

Compiled by Saibandhu Raghu Raman Satulury

18-02-1997:

Sai appeared as my mother and said:

1. Seek the support of your Guru to avoid pitfalls in life and proceed fur-

ther.

2. Do not feel bad for not earning recognition in spiritual field. Also do not

worry for uncaring children and wife ignoring your pleas. Instead of re-

penting over the happenings, take recourse to chant the name of God to

lead a peaceful life.

Guru‟s guidance is a must while going through depression.

of his everlasting mercy, He controlled my trouble from the very first. He saw to it that I would get the

attacks only while at home or at the office, and never on public roads and other dangerous places. The at-

tacks became milder and milder and they had no such after-effects such as the previous attacks used to

create. On several occasions, when time admitted my putting a little of the holy Udhi into my mouth on

feeling the previous symptoms, the attacks would vanish and would never trouble me.

However; though I am quite content to be cured slowly, my mother and brothers at home were anxious on

seeing that I was still having the attacks. On two occasions, without consulting me; they went to some

persons who were advertised as having great „mantrik‟ powers to cure such complaints. Simultaneously

with the consultation, my trouble was aggravated though I was unaware of the cause for it. For days to-

gether after each of the consultations I had several attacks, and began to behave like an imbecile. When I

was in such a condition, Sri Sai came upon me and told my mother “Am I not here to look after him? Why

did you go elsewhere? Never has any devotees been thrown into despondency. He is never having any of

the previous attacks that he used to have. Within other three or four months, he will be completely alright.

Do not do anything now which may make him worse. Be content at having the complaint cured slowly.”

Immediately I decided never to go to anyone in future, and to rest my entire faith on Sri Sai Baba. I am

perfectly happy now. These incidents may suffice to convince anyone that Sri Sai is most anxious not

only to relieve us of our burdens, but to see that after once we pray to Him, we do not take any false step

an thus ruin our chances of an easy relief. How well He has realised the troubles of poor mortals like us

and how anxious He is to make everyone happy can never be described in full.

Devotees Experiences of SRI SAI BABA by B.V.NARASIMHASWAMIJI

Justice M. B. Rege

I look upon Sri Sai Baba as the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. I did so

before His mahasamadhi in 1918 and I do so now. To me, He is not gone.

He is, even now.

To me, he had no limitations. Of course, when he was with us, there was the fleshy taber-

nacle. That was prominently brought to our notice at times. But mostly the infinite aspect

of His was what remained before me. I thought of him as a mental or spiritual image, in

which the finite blended very perfectly - yet allowing the finite to appear before us at times.

Now that the body has been cast off, the infinite alone remains, as 'Sai Baba'.

I am not after metaphysics and philosophical conundrums. Sai Baba occasionally talked in

mystic language and used parables freely - which, however, were construed in widely dif-

ferent ways by different listeners. Once he talked to me in the mystic way and asked me

whether I understood him. I said 'No'. Others were present then. After they left, I told him

that I did not grasp mystic utterances and that if he intended that I should grasp anything he

should speak to me in plain terms. After that he spoke to me only in plain words and not in

parables.

A short account of myself is necessary to show how I came to Sai Baba and how he filled

my life and became my all in all.

Our family God is Durga - Santa Durga of Goa - a Bhadra form and not a Rudra form. I

used to worship her and pray that she might ever keep me happy. Later when I was about

eight years old, I had my sacred thread initiation and learnt my Gayatri and Sandhya. These

I had regard for. I was thus naturally led on from Durga to another form of God. i.e., Nara-

yana or Vishnu. Vishnu as pictured in "Dhruva- Narayana" made a deep impression on me,

and I constantly meditated on that picture. When I concentrated or tried to concentrate on

Vishnu, Dhruva's figure frequently obtruded and so I cut off that portion of the picture and

continued my meditation. I made a special appeal that in that blank space in the picture,

(i.e., in that vacancy) Vishnu should place me. I had even as a boy practised Asana and

Pranayama. I could pass one or two hours sitting in Padmasana or Siddhasana and concen-

trate for at least fifteen minutes, a single picture holding the entire field for my attention. I

did all this without a Guru. I succeeded in Pranayama also to some extent. In this way my

meditation on Vishnu or Narayana was fairly intense. This continued till my twenty-first

year. Then (i.e., 1910) one day, I was either sleeping and had dreams or I had trance vi-

sions - I cannot say what they were. But the following three experiences I had in the course

of one night.

As I was in the lying posture on my bed, I felt a change. I was perceiving that the body lay separate and I was dis-

engaged from it - disconnected or unconnected. I was different from the body; and in front of me stood the figure

of Vishnu Narayana. This ended; and about an hour later, a second incident followed. Again my body lay there on

the bed. I was outside it. Sri Vishnu Narayana was standing before me. And by his side stood another figure. Sri

Vishnu addressed me and pointing to the other figure said "This Sai Baba of Shirdi, is your man; you must resort

to him".

In a clearing, deep in the forest, the trees were having a pre-dawn discussion.

“Animals come and rest in our shade but they leave a mess behind,” said the Jamun.

“The smell on some days is unbearable!”

“They show no concern for us because we‟re silent,” said the Sal. “But I‟ve had

enough! I‟ve made up my mind to drive away any animal that comes here!”

“That may not be a wise thing to do,” said the Peepul, the oldest and biggest tree

there. “The animals are a nuisance, I agree, but they serve a useful purpose. We are

all inter-dependent—trees, animals, men . . .”

“I‟m sorry,” interrupted the Sal. “I‟ve great respect for your views but in this matter I

will not listen to anyone. I won‟t allow animals here any more!”

True to his word when a leopard came to rest in the shade later that day, the Sal be-

gan to shake violently from side to side. The leopard, frightened out of his wits,

jumped up and ran. The Sal drove away all the animals that came to the clearing that

day and in the days that followed. In course of time animals stopped coming to that

part of the forest.

The Sal became a great hero to the younger trees in the neighbourhood and even

some of the older ones began bowing to him when the Peepul was not looking.

Then one day two woodcutters came to the clearing.

“Men!” gasped the Sal. “Why have they come here? They‟ve never come here be-

fore.”

“If they‟ve never come here before it was because they were afraid of the animals,”

said the Peepul. “Now the absence of the leopard and the tiger has made them bold.”

The Sal began to tremble with fear and with good reason. It was the first tree the

woodcutters chopped down.

“ The Power of a rumour” A hare resting under a banyan tree had a premonition of doom. “What would happen

to me if the earth were to break up?” he wondered. Suddenly, there was a „thud‟ fol-

lowed by a rumbling sound.

“It‟s happened,” thought the hare, “the earth‟s breaking up!” He jumped up and ran.

“Why are you running?” asked a hare who crossed his path.

“The earth‟s breaking up!” shouted the hare. “You‟d better run too.”

The second hare ran so fast he overtook the first.

“The earth‟s breaking up, the earth‟s breaking up!” he shouted to other hares he

passed.

Soon thousands of hares were scampering through the forest. Other animals got

caught up in the panic. The word spread from mouth to mouth, and soon everyone

knew: the earth was breaking up. It was not long before the whole jungle was on the

move. Reptiles, insects, birds and four-footed animals fled in wild disorder, and

their cries of terror filled the air.

A lion standing on a hillock, saw the animals coming and wondered what was going

on. He hastened down and positioning himself in front of the horde called for it to

stop.

His commanding presence stemmed the rising tide of panic among the animals.

“The earth is breaking up!” shrieked a parrot, alighting on a rock near him.

“Who says so?”

“I heard it from the monkeys."

The monkeys said they had heard it from the tigers, who said their informants were

the elephants, who gave the buffaloes as their source. When the hares were finally

implicated they pointed one to another until the one who had started it all was iden-

tified.

“What makes you think the earth is breaking up?” the lion asked him.

“I heard it cracking with my own ears, sire,” squeaked the hare, trembling in fear.

The lion investigated the sound the hare had heard and found that it had been caused

by a large coconut falling from a tree. It had landed on a pile of rocks, causing a mi-

nor landslide. “Go back to your homes,” said the lion to the animals who had been

running away, and who were now looking very foolish. “The earth‟s safe. Next time,

check a rumour before acting on it.”

SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SATCHARITA ~ CHAPTER 43&44 Contributed by: [email protected] continued from last issue..

Baba's Passing Away Baba being an incarnation of God needed no such help, but just to set an example to the

people, He followed this practice. When He knew that He was to pass away soon, He or-

dered one Mr.Vaze to read Ramavijayam to Him. Mr.Vaze read the book once in the week.

Then Baba asked him to read the same again day and night and he finished the second read-

ing in three days. Thus eleven days passed. Then again he read for three days and was ex-

hausted. So Baba let him go and kept Himself quiet. He abided on His Self and was waiting

for the last moment.

Sai Ram. Though Baba was fully enlightened and was a Jeevan Mukta, He always behaved

not like the Master that He was but as a humble servant and disciple of God. Allah Malik

was His constant refrain. The three times reading of Ramavijayam is significant since each

reading was cleaning one layer of ignorance and impurity in the devotees surrounding Him

and thus making them ready to witness the final shedding of the mortal coil by Baba. Sai

Ram.

Two or three days previous, Baba had stopped His morning peregrinations and begging

rounds and sat in the Masjid. He was conscious to the last and was advising the devotees not

to lose heart. He let nobody know the exact time of His departure. Kakasaheb Dixit and

Shriman Booty were dining daily with Him in the Masjid. That day (15th October) after

arati, He asked them to go to their residence for dining. Still a few, viz., Laxmibai Shinde,

Bhagoji Shinde, Bayaji, Laxman Bala Shimpi and Nanasaheb Nimonkar remained there.

Shama was sitting down on the steps. After giving Rs. 9/- to Laxmibai Shinde, Baba said

that He did not feel well there (in the Masjid) and that He should be taken to the Dagadi

(stone) Wada of Booty, where He would be alright. Saying these last words, He leaned on

Bayaji's body and breathed His last. Bhagoji noticed that His breathing had stopped and he

immediately told this to Nanasaheb Nimonkar who was sitting below. Nanasaheb brought

some water and poured it in Baba's mouth. It came out. Then he cried out loudly 'Oh Deva.'

Baba seemed just to open His eyes and say 'Ah' in a low tone. But it soon become evident

that Baba had left His body for good.

Sai Ram. Life and death are just two phases of existence in the continuum of consciousness

and for a realised Sage / Saint, physical death is just a transition, like stepping out from one

room into another. Since the Saint attaches no special significance to the body, He may

choose any time or method for the transition. Sai indicated that His time in the physical

body was over and it was time for the transition to the higher planes from where He can

continue to guide us. His words that He did not feel well there (in the Masjid) and that He

should be taken to the Dagadi (Stone) Wada of Booty. where He would be alright are sig-

nificant. We have seen that He prepared the site of that Wada many many decades ago by

removing all the weeds, by planting beautiful flowering plants and watering them etc. Since

He is the Kshetrajna, knower of the field, He prepared the Kshetra, field properly and of

course the highest flower plant (His own sacred body) was planted there so that the flagrant

flowers of Bliss can grow and spread their blossom from there for ages! Sai Ram. Will be continued….

Quintessence from Shri Sai Baba’s Philosophy (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) ~ Contribution by "Shashank"[email protected], Mrs and Mr Anand

Chapter 36: The Value of Human Birth

Continued from the previous issue…

Taking for granted that life may end at any time, man should always try for spiritual uplift

immediately. There should not be any delay or slackness in this effort. One should strive

hard, day and night, without rest to attain the goal of salvation. One should not give scope

for laziness or waste his time on food, sleep, fear and procreation. If so, he is in no way

better than an animal.

The way to attain salvation quickly is to server a Sadguru, who has attained Divine perfec-

tion. Merely hearing lectures about Divinity or reading holy books does not help a person

without the guidance of a guru. As the light given by the sun is many times more illumi-

nating than the light emitted by thousands of starts, so also are the teachings of Guru more

profound than mere reading of many books.

In short, we understand that those people whose divine qualities and sins are equal, they

are born as human beings and human beings only have got the opportunity to attain salva-

tion.

From the Editor‟s Desk

Even the Gods observe a law and that law is the law of Truth. For the Gods are themselves born of Truth, grow in Truth and live in Truth. They are emanated from the vast Being of the Supreme to carry out its Truth-Will in the manifesta-tion. They uphold and follow the workings of this Will, its law of effectuation. They are both the guardians and the functionaries of this law.
