Kick Gas Club Fun: The Kick Gas Club had their first one year anniversary and it was crowded. Great food, fun, and folks came together to celebrate. It was a real community event showing that EVeryone can build an EV. Thank all of you co-op/club folks, you guys KICK GAS!

CCSE Energy Showcase: Thank you again to all members that attended and showcased at the CCSE Energy Showcase. It was a great turnout! Special thanks to the Kick Gas Club for answering a pile of conversion questions.

Ecotality = EcoexpensivityMy free charger costing me $1000.00! As I eagerly await my Nissan Leaf, Ecotality sent out Arizona electrical contractors to “inspect” my house. They asked me a ton of questions, investigated my electrical panel, and were very nice about the whole process. A few days later, I got an “estimate” on the charger install. It was a $1500.00 credit on a $2500.00 bill. Ecotality is crediting me $1500 for the charger and costing me $1000 to install a 60A sub-panel and 50 feet of electrical cable. Being an electrical engineer I was a bit shocked at the price tag. So, just to be sure, I called an Electrician buddy of mine and gave him the price. After he could breathe again, he said, jokingly, it was a bit high. I have contacted Ecotality asking them why I need a separate sub-panel and are waiting for a reply. I didn’t ask them why they are not hiring California electricians, but I think I will when they respond to my previous questions.

Presidents Rant: Didn’t we learn from the old days that they best way to promote an EV is not by “Green” washing it? If you haven’t seen it, go online and find the latest Nissan Leaf commercial. As beautifully filmed and directed, it brings the cheesy try to yank a tear from your eye. It reminds me of the old american indian shedding a tear. The commercial starts with, what else, a polar bear. It’s on a shrinking iceberg. The bear starts to travel. It finally arrives in the city near a home with a Nissan Leaf. The owner, turns to see this giant bear and it stands up, growls, then gives the guy a big hug. Cute? yes. Well filmed? yes. However, my eyes rolled so far into the back of my head I could see my headache.Where are the hip hop hamsters? Where are the speedy hill side road scenes? Where are the beautiful shots of the car spinning around like a giant piece of candy you have to have? Where is the technology, morphing, robot car?In my opinion, if you want to attract the public, you have to use the advertising methods that work. Otherwise, you are decreasing your target audience based on pushing a save the planet agenda (which it seems a lot of kids today tune out). Give us some FLASH, PIZZAZ, and FLARE. We already know it’s going to help the world, but it can’t hurt to make it look fun and not like a PBS public announcement for recycling.

From the Treasurer: Mitsubishi and PSA (Peugeot Citroen) launch new electric powertrain collaborationPeugeot iOn EV

Since I continue to be interested in following the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, I was interested to recently read the article that Mitsubishi and PSA (Peugeot Citroen) are expanding their collaboration beyond an existing supply deal for electric cars to now include powertrains and also battery packaging. Mitsubishi will be supplying a version of its i-MiEV that PSA will sell in Europe as the Peugeot iOn and Citroen C0.

These new efforts will be targeted at applying electric drive to light commercial vehicles. Compact vans like the Ford Transit Connect and the Peugeot Bipper are a popular for businesses in Europe and are seen as a good application for electric drive. These vehicles

typically have a relatively small operating radius and run in urban areas where emissions are more of a problem. As a result, the limited range of near term battery electric vehicles is less of an issue. Around June or July 2010 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and PSA Peugeot Citroën (PSA) announced that they have started a feasibility study for the development and supply of powertrains for electric vehicles, including an analysis on the packaging of batteries and its business viability. The first application of this new agreement will focus on these light commercial vehicles.

This new step results from continuing discussions between the companies to expand their existing current collaboration on electric vehicles. MMC and PSA Peugeot Citroën have already signed a Cooperative Agreement regarding the development and supply of electric vehicles for Europe. Based on this agreement, MMC plans to start production of a jointly-developed European models based on its i-MiEV* new-generation electric vehicle for PSA Peugeot Citroën this October. (Which is very soon….) As mentioned before, Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle which is also based on the "i" minicar includes the sales of these European models, the Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-ZERO, which will commence at the end of this year. (again, which is very soon!)

McAuliffe announces $1 billion electric car investmentWashington PostSeptember 21, 2010 By Anita KumarFormer -- and perhaps future -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe is in Midtown Manhattan this week hawking cars.

On Tuesday, McAuliffe will announce to world leaders at the Clinton Global Initiative a commitment to invest $1 billion to build electric vehicles in economically depressed areas of the United States to spur the economy and create green jobs.

He spent Monday, the first day of the 2010 annual meeting, showing off his electric car on Seventh Avenue. He was joined by his good friend and former president, Bill Clinton.

"It doesn't get any bigger than this,'' he said in an interview from New York. "We're just trying to raise awareness."

McAuliffe, chairman of GreenTech Auto, paid $20 million in May for Hong Kong-based EuAuto Technology, which builds an electric vehicle called the MyCar.

He said that he has been speaking to legislators in his home state of Virginia as well as Tennessee and Mississippi about creating incentives for consumers who purchase electric vehicles.

The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee said the prices of what he calls neighborhood cars could be as low as $10,000 to make them affordable. MyCar can travel 70 miles on a single charge and has a top speed of 45 mph.

As part of the Coachella Valley's continuing efforts to position itself as a center for sustainability, a collaborative has formed to promote electric vehicle infrastructure and to prepare for the valley for the growing electric vehicle market. To kick off this effort a weekend of activities has been planned from October 15 – 16. An Electric and Alternative Fuel Vehicle Fair will be held on October 15th at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The following day the first Electric Vehicle Valley Rally has been scheduled for Saturday, October 16th. You are invited to participate in both events.

New fall models could rev salesMass-market electric cars will still cost more, but buyers can see rebates, tax credits and lower driving costsBy ONELL SOTOIf youʼve been looking forward to the electric car, the wait is almost over.Starting in a few weeks, electricians will begin installing the first of about 2,500 new charging stations in the county, preparing for the first mass-market electric cars in a generation. Some cars are already here — if you have more than $100,000 to spend, the Tesla Roadster will zip you from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. But itʼs not until later this year that plug-in cars roll out that are priced closer to what most families can afford. The Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt will be followed by a half-dozen other models from established carmakers and startups eager to get people to drive without burning gasoline. The movement is pushed by millions of dollars in government incentives for makers and drivers and is aimed at reducing dependence on petroleum and the production of greenhouse gases.Make no mistake, these cars will cost more to buy than comparable gasoline cars, even with the $12,500 in state cash rebates and federal tax credits.Thatʼs because the heart of the cars — the batteries — are very expensive.Still, these autos should cost less to drive and to maintain. Special electric rates will be available, and fewer moving parts should mean less maintenance: no more oil changes.

Three ways to plug inPlug-in hybrid: These cars use a battery pack and an electric motor to increase the efficiency of gasoline engines, which do the bulk of the work of turning the wheels. Weʼve see these for more than a decade. The difference is that the battery gets an extra boost from the grid and the car can be driven for a while without gasoline. - Toyota plug-in Prius.Extended-range electric: The wheels in these cars are driven by electric motors, with a battery charged off the grid providing the power when you first begin your journey. But when the battery runs down, a gasoline-powered on-board generator will kick on and keep you going. The batteries are smaller, so you might not need a dedicated charging station at home to charge up at night. - Chevrolet Volt and the Fiskar Karma.Battery-only electric: These also use electric motors to turn the wheels, and are powered by on-board battery packs that must be recharged off the grid. When the battery runs out of juice, itʼs time to plug in. A fast charger can get you several miles in a few minutes — enough to get you back home and to the charging station in your garage. Fast chargers are supposed to be installed at strategic locations around town. - Nissan Leaf, CODA, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Ford Focus EV.
