BISHOP PETER’S VISIT

Friday 17th February marked a special day for residents and staff at Kalyna Care

as we were honoured by a visit from the Bishop of Saint Peter and Paul Ukrainian

Catholic Cathedral (North Melbourne), The Most Reverend Father Peter Stasiuk. Bishop Peter attended a special afternoon tea in the Konvalyia wing with the resi-

dents of Kalyna Care. Leisure and Lifestyle Assistant Halya Bakaj welcomed Bish-

op Peter with a speech co-written by Oksana Tarnawska who also gave a speech

to welcome the Bishop. A gift of flowers from the residents was given by Ksenia

Popowycz who also gave a speech on behalf of the residents. Staff and residents

spent time talking to the Bishop whilst enjoying afternoon tea. The Bishop en-

joyed having photos taken with residents and has promised to visit us again. A

memorable afternoon was had by all.

The Maja Hrudka

Nursing Scholarship “Nursing is a special profession, and unless you

have some dedication you should not enter it.”

Maja Hrudka was the founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Kalyna Care

(Located in Delahey, Victoria) formally known as the Ukrainian Elderly People’s Home.

This, a position Maja held in the utmost regard. Let us tell you a little about Maja. She

was born on the 18th of January 1925 in Krasnohrad located in the Poltava region of

Ukraine. Having nothing but a suitcase to her name, Maja sailed by ship to Melbourne in

1949. By the end of 1950 she had achieved her diploma in nursing at Lakeside psychiatric

facility in Ballarat and mastered the English language. In 1954 she moved to Melbourne

to work at the Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital in Parkville. Following her completion of

studies at Melbourne University, Maja was appointed Director of Nursing at the Larun-

del psychiatric facility at Bundoora.

Maja eventually became Superintendent of Psychiatric Services in Victoria with her office

being situated on Collins Street, Melbourne. Maja had high expectations of her staff and

ran a tight ship.

Maja was extremely active in the Ukrainian community and she held various

executive committee positions not the least of which was as Secretary of the

Ukrainian Women’s Association. During this post, she represented the UWA

at a national level and at conferences in Toronto, Beijing and Ukraine. In

1995, she attended the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Wom-

en and in 1996 she contributed to international conferences in response to

the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It is significant that Maja resided and was

cared for in a home she built for other people. Some of the original staff who

began work at UEPH in 1993 were her carers. Maja passed away at Kalyna

Care on the 21st July of 2014 with some of those of whom she employed by

her side.

A large portion of Maja’s estate was left to Kalyna Care and given Maja’s ef-

forts in establishing Kalyna Care along with her passion for nursing as a career, the

Board of Directors decided to allocate a portion of Maja’s bequest to a perpetual nurs-

ing scholarship.

The scholarship is not only a testament to Maja’s personal achievements as she climbed

the corporate ladder in her nursing career, it will also ensure that her legacy lives on.

Specific criteria were developed for the scholarship with an emphasis on merit and per-

formance. Five applications were received from a range of staff designations including

enrolled nurses, carers and hospitality staff. The senior staff team undertook a very

stringent assessment of all applications.

The recipient of the inaugural Maja Hrudka Nursing Scholarship, Mary Kumar, was an-

nounced at Kalyna Care’s General Staff Meeting on Monday the 27th of February , 2017.

Mary has been working at Kalyna Care as a Carer since 2011 and will be undertaking her

Diploma in Nursing qualification. We congratulate Mary and know that she will take this

opportunity which Maja has provided to do her legacy proud.

The next Maja Hrudka Nursing scholarship offer will occur at the conclusion of Mary’s

studies and will be open to applications for post graduate nursing study opportunities.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

When Ashley started

working at Kalyna Care

he was a happy go lucky

young man who loved

everyone & was liked by

almost all of our residents apart from one

in particular who wasn’t quite taken with

him & would make it

quite clear that she didn’t

want him assisting her

whatsoever. Some of the

comments made to him

were very personal and

hurtful which included

references to his skin

colour. After speaking with the resident it became quite clear that she didn’t approve of any dark skinned staff, something which Ash-

ley was born with and is very proud of his origins. It was decided that it was best if he didn’t personally support her needs, a

duty then allocated to his co-worker. Also, wherever possible he wouldn’t work in that area in order to avoid or trigger any

possible aggression however; this made no difference so we needed to implement a plan.

I asked Ashley to continue to remain professional & to go out of his way to say hello to this resident and to

remember that things can happen in our lives that can affect the way we feel & act & not to take it too

personal. To his credit, he persevered.

After several days of saying hello & being ignored by the resident, she started to say hello back so he then began to ask if there was anything that she needed? The insults became less frequent & on occasions you could actually hear

her laughing with him & asking for him to assist her. She may never admit it however I

believe that Ashley is now her favourite carer.

The moral of the story is,

Don’t fight fire with fire – Fight it with compassion & understanding

You know their name, not always their story You hear their words but not why they say them

You’ve heard what they’ve done, but not what they’ve been through

If you were in their shoes and walked the path they did

Would you walk it any differently?

Residents pictured are not the Resident in the story

Sofia looks forward to me coming in to greet her

in the morning. She states that she loves that I make her so happy and give

her a hug. I go to her room and ask her about herself and her

grandchildren. I make sure I make up her bed exactly how she likes it.,I hear

from my co-workers that when I’m not on shift she always

asks about me & says how much she likes me Sofia asked to

see my daughter so I brought her in on the weekend and alt-

hough my daughter was very shy and didn’t say anything Sofia

couldn’t thank me enough for bringing her in & she had a

huge smile on her face.

LAUNDRY SERVICES

All personal clothing will be laundered at the facility.

Machine washable and dryable clothing is preferred.

If families prefer to launder personal items at home

they are most welcome to do so. In this instance

families are asked to provide a suitable receptacle

with a lid in which soiled clothes can be placed for

transport home. Bed linen is changed on a minimum of a weekly basis

and personal items are collected on a daily basis. It is

important to note that it maybe 24 hours before

laundered items are returned to your room.

ALL CLOTHING MUST BE LABELLED CLEARLY BUT DISCREETLY - CLOTH

NAME TAGS ARE PREFERRED. IF CLOTHING IS NOT ADEQUATELY LABELLED

IT IS AT RISK OF BEING MISPLACED.

PERMANENT MARKERS ARE NOT AN ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF LABELLING

CLOTHING AS THEY WEAR OFF AND AS THEY FADE THEY ARE DIFFICULT

TO SEE LEADING TO ERRORS IN RETURNING TO ROOMS.

A labelling service is provided by the facility at a cost of $1.00 per label. This charge

includes the purchase of the label and the staff time in fixing the labels to garments.

Labels are purchased in lots of 100 at a cost of $100.00. Clothing to be labelled

should be placed in a plastic bag with a note attached stating the resident’s name and

the words “to be labelled”. The bag can be left with staff at the nurse’s station. The

Team Leader will ensure the clothes are taken to the laundry for labelling. The label-

ling service may be arranged by contacting the Care Manager.

Preferred Clothing: We ask that you speak with the Care Manager or Registered Nurse about suitable

clothing, as each residents needs are different.

Woollens: It is advisable that Woollens and delicates are cared for by family members due to

the harsh chemicals and heat required by our laundry machinery to ensure infection

control.

Dry Cleaning:

A dry cleaning service is available for an additional fee. Please see the Care Manager

for further information.

Our weekly Tai Chi and Meditation Program offers our residents a different approach

on health and Wellness. Tai Chi focuses on breathing along with balance exercises,

gentle movements and stretches with emphasis on relaxation and calmness. Every resi-

dent can do the exercises in their own pace which results in a positive learning experi-

ence and progress can be seen in every session. The group is kept small (between 5

and 10 residents, 2 volunteers and the physiotherapist) to ensure a correct execution

of the exercises, combined with relaxing background music and dimmed lights. It

makes for a pleasant environment for all to exercise.
