April Green TipIt’s that time of year again! It’s time to start planting your garden and get your lawn in shape. Here are a few tips to help your grass and garden grow while making a positive impact on the environment. We all know that keeping your lawn nice and lush requires cutting it regularly. Instead of using a gas or battery powered lawn mower, opt for a manual mower instead. That way you get a work out and your lawn gets free nutrients from the clippings. Bugs can, well, bug us, especially when they are killing o our plants. Next time you have an infestation in your garden, choose a non-chemical or homemade pesticide instead of a toxic chemical. This way you’ll be saving the environment and your health. Water is great and plants need to be watered regularly, especially in the desert. Wasted water however, is not so great. This spring, before you plant your garden or if you are planning to put a new watering system in your lawn, consider using a soaker hose or drip watering system. Using one of these systems instead of using a spray watering system can save a gallons of water and keep your plants healthy more eciently. Happy planting everyone! ~ Wendy Uribe, St. George Library

This program offers families with young readers an opportunity for kids ages 4-12 to earn a free hamburger or cheeseburger for every five books they read. The program began March 3 and runs through April 14, 2012. Readers who register for the Cover to Cover Club at one of the library's seven locations will receive a log to keep track of books they read during the program. Children who read five library books at their grade level receive an Achievement Award and a certificate for a free hamburger or cheeseburger. Sign up at the Children’s Desk. For more information about the program, speak to a Children’s Librarian at your branch.
