Heavy Sound Festival Poperinge Belgium May 26th:Warlock (Germany), Crossfire (Belgium), Tobruk (UK), Tokyo Blade (UK),Pretty Maids (Denmark), Lee Aaron (USA), Sieger (USA), UFO (UK).

MORE NEWSstudio based, recording a first album to be released later this year *PALLAS released a new EP titled The Knightmoves, consisting of 3tracks: Strangers, Nightmare and Sanctuary. A new full length album isscheduled for an early summer release. More info on that, when I have! *PICTURE, one of Holland's best heavy metal bands are still in the studiofinishing the recordings of their 5th album titled Trailer, slated for an earlyJune release. As you know or don't know -1985 is the year of the youth!Anyway, in Holland there seems to be little help for young talented bands, especially hard rock or heavy metal (where many talents are to be found).Picture, who I have just mentioned, are trying to change all this by takingmany new discoveries with them on their tour. In every show two newbands will play; in this way Picture hope to stimulate and give the bandsmore publicity of their own. Nice one boyzz *TEARS OPERA - that's (for all I know) 2 guys from London, who made avery good single, very different and unusual. They've also written andperformed it themselves with the ROYAL PHILHARMONICORCHESTRA. And - it's released throughout their own label TearsOpera. Have a listen to it for it ought to do well in Europe (as TonyNewman predicted, and he's right most of the times, so watch itl) *While I'm finishing writing this it occured to me that I've never introducedmy flatmate Christie, who most of the time lends me a helping hand (onlywhen she is in a sane mood!). If she's not sane, she sometimes get'scarried away. So if I sometimes sound a bit nutty don't blame me, it's thatbad influence she has on me. But luckily it's a very big flat so I can lockher up in her room from time to time (Don't rush to your phones now, tocancel your subscription!). I'm quite sane, I think. Bye for now * LuvALEXANDRA **

GLORY DAYSThe Dire Straits album is happening andthe overall European response isenormous! 73 % of our correspondentsadded the album this week! Their firststudio album since Love Over Gold(1982) is loaded with airplay favourites.Real consensus is hard to find, althoughthe rockers like Money For Nothing, WalkOf Life (with its funny Sir Douglas Quintet -like type of organ part) and One Worldseem to fit best for rock radio. The titletrack may not be the most logical choicefor rockradio but is one of our favourites(very suitable for nighttime play!)On first hearing you may have decidedthat Robert Plant hasn't made one of hiseasiest albums for programming. Thisshould not be the reason for not playingit!) Preceded by the single Pink And Black(although we are more in favour of theAmerican single Little By Little) this albumshould get a fair chance and needscollective album radio support. pageAlthough the USA For Africasupersession continues to be one ofEurope's hottest played albums,Supertramp's new album Brother WhereYou Bound is shooting up as primecontender for next week's EuroradioAlbumsmash. It will be interesting to see ifEuro Radio is willing to play the sixteenminutes long 'Brother' tradk in its fulllength (that radio can work with extendedtracks has been proven earlier with thesuccess of Private Investigation by DireStraits). With the upcoming European Tour inmind, Bruce Springsteen still gets heavycoverage on album -programs. Somedeejays are even playing the Glory Daystrack in celebration of Bruce' new bride!Now.. deejays are always accused ofnever attending Rock concerts. It will beinteresting to know who of you out thereare going to see the Boss on hisEuropean tour. We anxiously await your !

MAI TAI MAKING HISTORYThe Dutch three girl band Mai Tel is slowlymaking inroads on the European market andare at the moment one of Europe's hottestCrossover acts. Their new single History(Injection/CNR Holland) is moving up theEuropean Airplay Top 50 due to heavy airplayin England, the Benelux and some parts of Italyand the latest news (very hot- just in time tomake the deadline) is that the single is newentry in the UK at 47 1For Holland, though, it is not their first single.Their debut Keep On Dancin' was released inOctober '83 and was a club favourite althoughchart action did not follow. Their follow-upWhat Goes On was a modest success inHolland in april '84. But real acclaim came withtheir 3rd single Body And Soul, a very swingingup -tempo dance track where the vocals of thethree ladies came to full power. And their nextone Am 1 Losing You Forever only confirmedtheir status as one of Holland's best vocalbands at the moment; the ballad was forweeks and weeks a favourite on the Dutchchannels. They all were born in Dutch overseas countries(two come from Curacao and one fromSurinam) but came at an early age to Holland. All have back grounds in the music field, butthis is their first real successful band.Special mention should be made to Eric VanTijn and Jochem Fluitsma, who wrote, arranged and produced all the songs.Their recently released self -titled albumcontains all the above mentioned singles withthe exception of Keep On Dancing. From thisdebut album we further recommend you tocheck The Rules Of Love, a delightful piece offunky action. Comparisons with the AmericanPointer Sisters are constantly made and wethink that this unique talent needs to benurtured for a very long time to come! ... The unique talents of Mai Tai

INTER -BEAR DIALOG(AtWe are now used to African, Cuban, SouthAmerican and recently Mexican (Los Lobosetc.) influences in today's pop music. Butwho would have thought that music fromthe Balkan could mix with pop ? The ThreeMustaphas Three make it happen! Theirmini album Barn! Mustaphas Play Stereo(Globe Style Records) is a very peculiar andunusual combination of ethnic Balkan musicwith 'modern' Western rhythms. The Three Mustaphas Three are six familymembers from a place called Szegereli, theheart of the Balkan. The music they play is

traditional cheerful folk music, however, withsome very strong leanings on Westernmusic. Somehow, they seem to be able toplace their music into every accessible (andalmost commercial!) frame. Withinstruments like cymbals, cello, violin, accordion and various percussioninstruments, the Three Mustaphas Threecreate a very hypnotizing atmosphere andone only wonders where they picked upsuch influences. In the moody track A Chilling Tale Pt. 4/Belz,Uncle Patrell Mustapha tells us about theimportance that the bear has for the peopleliving in Szegereli; a story 'about the daySzegereli lost it's memory': imagine yourselfto be amongst the people of this little townfor a gathering for the annual bear seminar, set up for the promotion of inter -bear dialog. The bottles are many, the glasses full, thefood hot, the speeches short... and theyoung Mustapha's are starting to play thisvery same bear -dance music. And all thepeople and all the bears started to move tothe delicate rhythms. Soon however, it isnoticed that the friendliness of the bearsexceeds all expectations... The daySzegereli lost its memory.A charming and beautiful little storyaccompanied by an accordeon and a mustfor those programmers always on the lookout for something new and exciting.Be careful and play this mini album at 45

rpm cause the label states different! As theinserted leaflet says: "Please excuse ourconfusion label, we don't know yet thesystem of rotation speeds for your country.

Best regards, H. Mustapha (by order of theBalkan Music (Rotation) RegulationCommittee)".Switch into something new, try the Balkanbeat of the wonderful Three MustaphaThree. For your information: Globe Style records isbased at 48-50 Steele Road, London NW107AS, England.

Big news this week comes from France where from June 1st videos willagain be allowed on the French national TV channels. Negotiationsbetween all interested parties were dramatic, as the SNEP (the Frenchorganization of record companies) needed to beat a deadline. As wereported earlier the SNEP had already an agreement with the Canal Pluspay channel which was already paying for video rights for the last 6months. However, the agreement with Canal Plus specifically mentionedthat they would not have to pay any rights anymore if the SNEP wouldnot have reached an agreement with the national channels before June1st 19851?I Because of budget reasons the French channels will nothave to pay for the video rights in the first month and this caused a lastminute major problem. Although the record companies agreed toprovide the videos free of charge for this first month only, the Frenchmusicians union demanded payment for this first monthz too. This wouldhave meant that record companies would have had to pay the musicians

ion on videos that they deliver free of charge to French TV. Anyway, alittle more than 1500 FF. will be paid for each clip to be shown on FrenchTV. This will help the declined sales on international repertoire * Talkingabout payment for video rights; It looks like this issue is now also beunder heavy negotiation in the USA. Major labels CBS and WEA areexpected to be charging the MTV's soon, which is a great turnaround *The US First Lady Nancy Reagan is an active campaigner against druguse in the USA. One of the initiatives from her organization is a 3 1/2minute video entitled "Just Say No" which has a strong anti -drugmessage. The video will be aired by all national and regional musicchannels including MTV and will be pushed strongly in clubs, schoolsand movie theatres too * it looks like in spite of the bad results of lastyear, the second St. Tropez Video Music Festival will still be held. It willmost probably take place the first week in October, probably just beforethe Vidcom festival in Cannes *DAVID BOWIE's new clip Loving The Alien should get enormousshowing all around Europe now that the single is added to a lot ofEuropean radio stations * ERIC CARMEN has a new clip for his singleI'm Through With Love from his debut Geffen album * And also NINAHAGEN is back again, striking with a video for Universal Radio from hernew album Extasy, which is available in German and English. She'll beout touring Europe in July *Tight Connection To My Heart is the title to the new BOB DYLAN video. It's been a while since he has been in the spotlights *The new MEN ATWORK video for Everything I Need is very nice, but so is the song *

NEYMOON SUITE are currently working on their promo -clip to theirupcoming new single Wave Babies. A great song, actually the wholealbum is very good. wonder what happened to Europe? Unfortunatelythey didn't get the attention that they deserve over here, while the Ip wentGold in the States and Canada. Is there a possibility to still pick up onthis? *BRYAN FERRY's latest clip to Slave To Love is quite a sophisticatedmasterpiece, just like the song. So we are all looking forward to lay ourhands on his new album * Old mates PHIL LYNOTT & GARY MOOREteamed up to make a real good record Out In The Field. The videoaccompanying that is also just released. Both should do welll *

WhileMiles Davis' version of Time After Time isjust out on the market, Cyndi Laupercontinues to 'have fun' on the first releasefrom Steven Spielberg is new film,Goonies 'r' Good Enough. A lot of funalso for Italian shoe manufacturers withMink De Ville's special shoe tribute. With the upcoming Bruce Springsteentour, Nils Lofgren's single Secrets in TheStreet (iowerbell) will certainly arouse alot of radio action (Nils, as you know, is anew member of the E Street gang). It is arather simple, but effective rocky tune, with some beautiful guitar licks in themiddle (check the 12" version). Thehottest producer in town, Nile Rodgers, isthe driving force behind the surprisinglytame new single of Sister Sledge (fromthe forthcoming album When The BoysMeet The Girls). An early Sixties Doo-Wop style enwrapped in an almost Euro-sounding production.

We are very proud of one of ourcorrespondents: Claudio Cecchetto, program director of the Italian cableDeejay Television has co -produced thenew single by Sandy Marton, Camel ByCamel. A poppy song with good chancesto repeat the Euro success of 1984(People From Ibiza). 33

BATTLEFIELDThe Star Sisters, whose Broadway andHollywood repertoire charted in variousEuropean countries, come up with a newsound and image. The single Dangerisproduced by the same team behind MaiTai (see seperate section) and deservesto chart outside of Holland. Our lastrecommendation for Euro-Crossover isthe new single by the Dutch band TimeBandits, who were very popular last yearin Australasia. Endless Road has a verycommercial feel that sometimes comesvery near to the sounds of ModernTalking. The European Top 100 Singles is abattlefield this week with many recordsshooting up the charts; Paul Hardcastlejumps right into the top 10 (7-29), DuranDuran's Bond theme hits Top 10 (10-48),very closely followed by Eurythmics (11-,

24). The sunny Motown sounds ofKatrina &The Waves moves up to 20(from 42) and the original version ofAround My Dreams by Silver Pozzoli, charted in France, Germany andDenmark and currently at 22 (from 54), issuddenly picking up more sales than thecover version by Kasino (30-37).

BODY -STOCKINGSThe Eurovision Song Contest winnersBobbysocks are picking up a lot of radioairplay and we expect the single to comein the European Top 100 Singles nextweek (presently 104).The European Airwaves show strongmovement as well this week. Thegreatest number of adds are forHardcastle, Duran Duran (see above) andSupertramp's Cannonball. This slowrocky tune gets heavy radio coveragemainly in France and Holland but a chartposition hasn't materialised yet (thoughthe album comes in at 23 this week).Anticipating the release of the new BryanFerry album, the single Slave To Lovejumps to no 9 in our Airplay Top 50 andyou are obviously all dying to hear his newalbum Boys And Girls . It should arrive onyour desk any day now.

LONDON CALLINGby Howard Marks

God, did I get a telling off last week. No, it wasn't from the editor althoughthat makes a change. No this time it was from the Tony Blackburn officeover at BBC Radio London, having read the column recently, they feelthat they should be getting a few namechecks. And quite rightly too.Tony is doing a great job for soul music fans, and has a huge following onthe show, and the Soul Night Out which he presents too. Tony wasrecently a guest on TV -AM, and his book will be out in the shops thismonth. He also has his weekly soul show on Sky as well.Over at Radio One, Janice Long recently interviewed Samantha Fox. Iwonder which lucky engineer got to pin the mike on her blouse, or didthey use a mike stand, and if so how far away from her face did they needto place the stand. For those of you in Europe who may not have heardof Samantha, she is a 19 year old model, whose main attraction defiesthe laws of gravity. She make Dolly Parton look like a novice! Also at Radio One, Andy Peebles has just completed a special with TinaTurner, and when I last saw Andy, he had a huge smile on his face, Itseems that one of the mikes didn't work properly, and Tina had to sharehis mike, which means that the lovely lady had to sit awfully close toAndy. I told you not to wear such tight jeans now Andy, didn't I!Due to recording commitments, Madness have had to pull out of theGlastonbury Festival planned for June. They will be replaced by StyleCouncil, whose new album will be in the shops as you read this.Lots of publicity for Bruce Springsteen and his wife in the press and onthe radio. The man will be here soon for concerts. Meanwhile, it isrumoured that Capital Radio's Roger Scott was very unhappy not to beinvited to the wedding. And there is no truth in the rumour that Roger ishaving Bruce's records melted down and injected into himintraveinousy. Some good new singles out at the moment from Beggars Banquet. Theyhave singles from The Cult Pink Rhythm, which features John Roccaformerly with Freeeze, and a great new version of the old StrawberryAlarm Clock single Incense & Peppermints by a new band who calledthemselves The Adult Net.Recent guests on Soul Train have been Mai Tai, imagination, PhilipBailey, Loose Ends and Aurra. The show is getting lots of viewers, andhas just had its run extended to the end of October. Recent guest on TV -AM have been Tony Blacicbum (as mentioned above), Gary Glitter, BjoemUlvaerus and Stewart Copeland. Breakfast Time recently played host toEdwin Star. The Terry Wogan show has recently featured Duran Duran,Rick Springfield and Roy Orbison.Talking of Rick Springfield, he played his first ever live concert hererecently, and did a fine interview with Kid Jensen over at Capital Radio,His new single is great, and should be huge in the U.K.In town recently was Nils Lofgren, he has new product available onTowerbell Records. He will be also touring in June with Bruce.New singles in the shops at the moment from China Crisis, TalkingHeads, Prince, David Bowie, Elton John, and Thereze Bazar (rememberDollar & Guys N' Dolls). New albums from Kenny G., Chris Rea, Toy Dolls,Robert Plant, New Model Army and The Truth.Capital Radio's resident Roland Rat, my mate Gary Crowley is to host anew pop quiz for Central Television. The show will run for six weeks, and is to be called Poparound. It will be screened on a wednesdayafternoon. Gary has been away on holiday recently and his show hasbeen hosted by various members of OMD, Go West, UB40, SpandauBallet, Madness and Depeche Mode. You may remember from time to time that I have mentioned the bandwith the least favourite name of all time (The Jesus & Mary Chain)... well, they are about to unleash their new single upon us. God help us all. Therecord Is called You Trip Me Up, and the b -side is entitled Jesus Suck.Wonderful stuff yeah!Look out for the current single from The Boothill Foot Tappers, greatsingle, and deserves much more attention than it is getting.Okay, and for my final observation this week, somebody called GaryFarrow. Recently sold his story to the Sunday Newspapers about hisaffair with comic Jim Davidsons wife. No wonder we never see youaround the radio stations, Gary, now everyone knows what you do duringthe day....

ALEXANDRA'S

NEWS CORNER

Hello again, and a very good day to you. Lots to write about (forget it -not true) but little time to do so. You may ask yourself why that is andwhether this gil here has been running about too much, therefore a littleexplanation. We had a fewbankholidays which is all very nice, but also leftus with timepressure, as we had to get things together in three daysinstead of the usual five. Nevermind, chatting's over let's get going *Record company BRONZE is doing very well despite the rumours. They've just signed BERNIE MARSDEN's band ALASKA. The deal fortheir current album The Pack covers North America, Japan, Australasia, plus a worldwide deal for all future material *I.Q. have finished recording their new album which is called The Wake. It's been produced by their guitarist MIKE HOLMES and bassist TIMESAU. The band will be supporting WISHBONE ASH on their upcomingUK tour, followed by their own UK headliner tour. Will supply you with thedates when I have them * NILS LOFGREN has his solo single on themarket called Secrets In The Street, taken from his album Flip * Makesure you don't miss out on the SPRINGSTEEN dates, and get your mostcomfortable shoes on, as the Master is known to play for at least threehours. That's definitely value for money. By now everyone obviouslyknows that BRUCE has done the big step and has got married toJULIANNE PHILIPPS. Lots a luck! *RE -FLEX had their new single released titled How Much Longer. Takenfrom their forthcoming album which bares the title Humanication, to bereleased in the next few months. To coincide with this, the band willundertake a large tour called The Humanication World Tour coveringEurope, USA, UK and the Far East * Last week a new MARILLION singlewas released entitled Kayleigh, produced by CHRIS KIMSEY. The songis also featured on their new album Misplaced Childhood set for releaseon June 10th. While September/Oktober will see the band touringextensively around the UK *ICICLE WORKS will release their second album in the autumn. Last weekthough a new single came out titled All The Daughters * ROBINGEORGE has been in the studio to record his new single. This is calledDon't Turn Away. The song is also on his album Dangerous Music, buthas been totally newly recorded. Until now a release date has not beenset. Robin will soon be playing a few UK dates, around the end of May,

when and where hasn't been confirmed either, what has been confirmedis the glg he's doing at London's Dominion Theatre on June 7th, which issponsored by Capital Radio. Obviously It will be recorded, More detailson the rest when I get them (Hi Joan). BRMB - Birmingham are alsorecording a concert by Robin around the end of June. More detailscoming soon *Last week URIAH HEEP played Paradiso, I was impressed. They are realpro's without loosing this burning rock & roll feeling, which is quite rarethese days especially when a band is in the biz for so long. A new singlewill be on the market soon, taken from their album Equator. The track iscalled Poor Little Richgirl, one of my favourites, a great ballad. See Heep ifyou can, it's well worth! (and stay away from that evil booze!) * UKrockband BRONZ has a new line-up. For names and further details seenext weeks issue *Now do you remember PUSSYCAT from Holland? Okay, then you'resurely remember their singer TONY WILLE, she had her first solo albumreleased called Privilege. A first single taken from this album is availablenow and entitled Hungry Nights. A host of well known musicians lend hera helping hand. On keyboards TON SCHERPENZEEL (ex -KAYAK), aGerman rhythm section CURT, CRESS and DIETER PETEREIT (SPLIFF &PASSPORT), KEES TEN DAM on sax, EDDIE CONRAD percussion andwatch this: JOE ELLIOT singer of DEF LEPPARD who's done theharmony vocals on the beautiful ballad written by CHRIS REA andentitled Every Beat Of My Heart * Go For Soda (something I agree withafter finding out what white wine can do to you!) is the title to the newKIM MITCHEL single, rising with a build in Billboards' charts. This one hasjust been released in Europe as well. The new album is slated for a June14th release and called Akimbo AlogoPAUL HARDCASTLE's single 19 is the fastest no. 1 in the UK Chrysalisever scored so far. GERMANY CALLING by Teddy Hoersch

Let's start with good news: record buyers will be delighted to hear thatCologne based Saturn, known as the biggest record shop of the world, announced the opening of a second store in Frankfurt, Berger Str. 125,where they'll offer more than one million records * An example whichdeserves strong following was launched by FAZ, one of Germany'sleading newspapers. Financed through adverts they not only started aTV service broadcast in three of Frankfurts major hotels to inform visitorsabout sightseeing facilities, cultural events etc. but also introduced a city-tv which goes out via monitor systems in the centre of Frankfurt * BR 3announced the start of a new programme in fall 1985. The dailyprogramme will go out from 14 to 18 o'clock. Between 14 and 15:30 it'sThomas Gottschalk, between 16:30 and 18:00 it's Guenter Jauch toentertain the listeners. Program makers are still undecided about thefemale jock to take over the middle section *The situation of the private radio stations in Munich is nothing but amess. From May on 20 stations have to share three frequencies whichwill as insiders say cause a chaotic 'wave salad'. Nevertheless privateradio come up as mushrooms in the south. In Aschaffenburg, a city in theouter north of Bavaria a new station called Neue Welle-AntenneAschaffenburg was founded *SAT 1, the satellite TV station which started its programme on the 1st ofJanuary this year, is the first choice for the 500.000 households andalready has a higher acceptance than AHD and ZDF * By far worse isthe situation of the German concert promoters. They complain of arecession of concerts up to 20 percent. In the first half of the runningseason there've been 250 concerts less than last year. While expensesand ticket prices steadily increase the takings go down. Feature lengthconcert films and videoclips are said to be poison for the concertbusiness *Personal news: After eight years working for K -Tel as head of marketingFrank Pietzsch left the Frankfurt based company to establish his ownPhono- and Video firm. German singer/songwriter Joachim Witt, up tonow with WEA, signed a three year contract with DeutscheGrammophon. His debut album for the company is expected forSeptember. Manfred Wodora, till now working for Warner Home Video, took over responsibilities as head of product in WEA domesticdepartment. From January 1986 on Ulrike Wolf who worked as aneditor for NDR will co -host the daily ARD-news magazine"Tagesthemen" together with Hans -Joachim Friedrichs, who until! nowworked as a ZDF correspondent in the United States.

PARIS CALLING

Good old Vogue Records, the famous French record company, hasbeen sold by owner Leon Cabac to Jean Luis Detry who was formerlygeneral manager of Carrere Records. Many industry experts believethat Detry is financially backed by Claude Carrere himself but at presstime there was no proof of that. in any case Detry also arranged a majorloan from the banks. But apart from this major sale, there are many otherchanges in the French record industry which attract attention. FormerWEA general manager Marc Exiga has gone to Trema where he is hiredto make it a successful company in international repertoire. So far Tremahas been extremely successful with French artists but wants a base ininternational as well. Exiga's former position at WEA has been filled by 2ex -CBS executives, Philippe Duwat and Jean Jacques Gozlan. CBSRecords has already seen many changes during the last few months, but has also just appointed a successor to managing director Alain Lew(who went to Polygram). This time they took someone from outside therecord industry. At Polygram Alain Levy has appointed Luigi Calabresi tohead Polydor Records while Jean Paul Commin is named managingdirector at Phonogram. It seems fashionable for international record labels to sign French artists.Latest proof is very promising young act Axel Bauer who has just beensigned to A&M Records Los Angeles. Total sales of records in Francehave dropped considerably during the first quarter of 1985. Compared tothe 1984 first quarter figures, the drop is most significant for albums.During the 1985 first quarter total units on albums reached 7,45 million(compared to 9,70 million a year earlier), while cassettes went down to4,79 million (was 5,17 million). The upsurge of CD was good but does notmake up the difference. Total value of record sales came down to 531million french francs (compared to 559 million francs in 1984). Thedecline of sales on international repertoire was partly due to the non -broadcast of video clips on the national television channels, however, bignews this week as from June 1st videos will again be allowed on theFrench national TV channels. (see our Video News section).Ail French radiostations were anxiously awaiting the new ratings figuresthis week. Early reports indicate that especially the NRJ FM chain wentup again and ranks very high, especially in the Paris region. But more onthis next time. Au revoir!
