Year 5/6 Go Tree Planting
Last term on Tuesday the 28th of June, Room 12 went tree planting as a part of
a Landcare program to save the red-tailed phascogale.
The students travelled by bus to the Garnett property just outside of town and,
after being paired with a partner, worked together to plant several species of
native saplings. It is hoped, that by planting the trees, the endangered red-
tailed phascogale will return to the area in greater numbers to mate and forage
for food. A big thanks to the Garnett’s for hosting us, Andrea and Greg from
Landcare and Mrs Loxley for helping us!

Principal’s News
Staff Changes
It is with sadness that I announce the resignation of Mrs Kowald from the Library at
Braeside. During Cindy’s time at the school she has been responsible for some major
changes including Lexile leveling the whole library, shifting the shelves to make them
more accessible and cataloguing the vast array of teacher resources.
We wish her all the best with her future endeavours. Mrs Crouch will be filling in for 4
weeks until the position is advertised.
Mrs Poett spent last week at the High School in the Principal role and is also up there
again this week in the Deputy Principal role.
Positive Behaviour Support
As a result of our recent parent survey review and School Development Day session,
staff have decided to engage in a process called Positive Behaviour Support. This is
a school wide process that involves a fundamental change in thinking towards student
behaviour. The program has been extensively researched and trialed in 70 schools
throughout Western Australia and many other schools throughout the world. Staff
received an information session Monday of last week and unanimously elected to be
involved in the process. As time goes on and we undertake the learning related to this
process, there will be further information provided. A brief synopsis is:
Positive behaviour support is a multi-strategy whole school approach to achieve
positive outcomes for all students.
Positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviours is considered the most successful
response to behaviours displayed. Students will develop responsible behaviours
through the teaching of new skills while responding effectively to make challenging
behaviours redundant.
PBS is a systems perspective and provides a continuum of behaviour support. There
is a strong focus on proactive strategies, including teaching and supporting the
appropriate and expected positive behaviours to all students in the school.
Positive Behaviour Support is a team based process for systemic problem solving and
planning. The ultimate goal of Positive Behaviour Support is to increase the school’s
capacity to effectively and efficiently address the behavioural support needs of all
students and staff (Lewis, T.J. & Sugai, G. 1999 p. 4). Further information can be
accessed from

Protective Behaviours
Teachers also accessed personal learning in the area of protective behaviours last
week. The protective behaviours program links closely to the common language focus
that is promoted in the Positive Behaviour Support program. The two programs link
closely to support children in all areas of their lives. Students also had the opportunity
to attend a session as the presenter modeled strategies for teachers to adopt when
delivering the curriculum in the classroom. The school has purchased the resources
to support the implementation of this program during Term Three. The knowledge will
also be used by the Positive Behaviour Support Team when designing expectations
and the revised Code of Conduct.

Bendigo Cup
Art Gallery Excursion
Children from Year 1-6 head to the Art Gallery this week to participate in a Science based art activity. The
school is covering the cost of this activity and it is open to students who have not received a blue or yellow
slip all year. Students attending will have the additional experience of seeing their NAIDOC artworks on
display in the Library. Any parents interested in viewing the work can visit the Library any time during the
next two weeks.
Bendigo Cup Netball Carnival
Students from Year 5 and 6 enjoyed the day out on Friday participating in the Bendigo Cup Netball Carnival.
They joined students from throughout the Great Southern including Mount Barker, Kojonup, Wagin and
Narrogin. Please see pages 3 and 4 for more information.
Enrolments for 2017
This Friday is Census day, which is the day that at school level we enter student numbers and information in
preparation for our budget for 2017. We have been busy collecting numbers and enrolments for Kindergarten
next year and at the present time look like running 2 classes again. Could any parents who are possibly
leaving Katanning ring the school and let us know. Also, if you know of new arrivals to town who may be
interested in joining the Braeside community, we would like to hear from you. The more accurate our
numbers are, the smoother the transition is into 2017.
PEAC testing
Students from Year 4 will be involved in for Primary Extension and Challenge program (PEAC) testing on
Wednesday this week. The testing identifies which students are performing above a state determined level.
These students are offered access to specialist classes and online sessions in Year 5 and Year 6. Currently
we have one identified PEAC student at Braeside.
Sporting Schools Program
The Sporting Schools Program begins this week and is open to students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Students choose to attend on either a Tuesday or Thursday session and are picked up from school by the
Katanning Leisure Centre coaches. After the session, parents are required to pick students up from the
Leisure Centre. If your child is interested and has not yet enrolled, please call the office and Mrs Woods can
possibly arrange a place for them in the Thursday group.

Principal’s News continued…
On Friday the 29th of July, selected students from
year 5 and 6 participated in the Bendigo Cup Netball
Competition at the Katanning Leisure Centre. The
students had a great time, some having never played
netball before! Braeside entered 3 mixed teams and
the boys who played absolutely loved it!
The year 6 mixed team had a fantastic day winning
their division, not losing a game all day!

Cycle Safe Incursion
On Friday 22nd
July we had a Cycle Safe Incursion for Kindy to Grade 3 students. The program went through all the
safety aspects of riding our bikes. This included how to check our bikes before riding them, the importance of wearing
a helmet, be seen to be safe, be aware and how to keep left when riding.
Rooms 3 and 4

from Cycle Safe.
Well done to all students involved-they represented
Braeside impressively with impeccable behaviour
and sportsmanship! Thank you also to Miss
Thornbury, Mrs Nicholson and Chelisa Eades for
umpiring the entire day for us!

Katanning Junior Basketball Association
AGM Tuesday 2nd August 2016. 7pm at the
Katanning Leisure Centre. Parent support
is vital for the 2016/17 season to operate
successfully.
On the 25th July, Room 3 hosted the assembly. They all dressed in farmers clothing because their item was
about an old women who loved to read, however when she moved to the country she had to do a lot of farm
work. The students learnt to retell the story by using the “Talk for Writing” strategy. This strategy supports and
engages the student to remember all of the events of a story in the correct sequence through drama.
