Your man did an excellent job, especially with cleaning out the deadwood in the lilacs- I’m sure they can ‘breathe’ now. Can hardly wait to see the mulch job you guys do!

JOHN BREWER, ISA Certified Arborist

How has the EAB infestation progressed since last year?We saw many heavily infested trees in 2016, but in 2017 and 2018, if I see an ash tree that isn’t infested, I’m kind of surprised.

There are isolated pockets of healthy ash trees in neighborhoods here and there— perhaps a small ash tree in a neighborhood yard where there are no other ash trees around— but they are becoming few and far between.

I was at a campground in Lebanon three weeks ago where there was a higher percentage of ash on the grounds than normal. I have never seen a more heavily infested area— woodpeckers, shaved looking trunks, piles of bark on the ground.

How far gone can a tree be and still be saved?I’ve heard 40% gone, 50% gone, but I think that’s pretty optimistic. If you have 40% of a tree’s canopy dying back, the chances of saving it are pretty slim. If you have some ash trees and the infestation is still minor, this year could be your last chance to save them.

What if treatment is not an option?Because EAB-infested ash trees tend to become brittle and unstable as they die, they need to be taken down as soon

as possible, because the longer they go, the more difficult they are to remove safely.

How long have you been treating ash trees for EAB in this area? Many of our clients were aware of this problem years ago. We’ve been treating some high value, prominent trees for as long as seven or eight years. But it’s getting to the point that, in the not-too-distant future (perhaps 3-5 years), we may no longer have ash trees in this area.

I might have some ash trees. What should I do?You can go online and find out how to identify EAB yourself, or you can call us to come out and evaluate your trees. Then we can come up with a management plan to either save or remove them before they become an elevated risk.

Is it too late to get treatment for 2018?We have approximately through the end of May to treat in order to control this year’s generation of beetles as they are emerging in adult form. Currently we’re treating by trunk injection, which lasts two years.
