Many of you know our long standing territory rep from Hardi, Trevor Pahl.

After spending many years devoted to the Hardi brand, Trevor has decided to take a well-

deserved break from the role of SA Territory sales representative and the travel it entails.

We will miss Trevor’s huge experience with Hardi sprayers (there are not many that he has not

dealt with!), his assistance with sales and his jovial manner when he comes over.

We look forward to meeting our new Sales rep when they are appointed and wish Trevor all the

best for his future endeavours and travels.

Farewell Trevor Pahl

The Agronomy Angle—New Seed Varieties ‘There are a number of newly released seed varieties for next season. Here is a summary of most of them.

We are accepting orders now. If you have an indication of what you want, the sooner you can let us know, the better.

Rockstar (AH) wheat:

Rockstar is an exceptionally high yielding mid-late flowering wheat with AH classification in the Southern zone (VIC/SA). It has a similar time to flowering as LRPB Trojan and is ideally suited to earlier sowings, providing a varietal alternative to maximise sowing opportunities.

It has good grain size and hectolitre weight – similar to Trojan and good disease resistance package. Good stem rust (MRp), yellow leaf spot (MRMSp) and stripe rust (MRMSp) resistance (all provisional ratings), and very good powdery mildew (Rp) resistance (SA provisional rating only).

Moderate plant height.

Catapult (AH) wheat:

Catapult may be viewed as a 'longer season' Scepter type, with a mid-late maturity allowing growers to achieve Scepter-like yields when sown in late April. Catapult offers a unique combination of features to growers, combining this maturity type with yellow leaf spot resistance, CCN resistance and AH quality.

Nighthawk (AH) wheat:

A slow maturing Spring wheat with a unique set of maturity holds that allows it to be planted earlier in areas that don’t suit the traditional winter wheat types. High tiller

number and semi prostrate early growth habit which may aid as part of an Integrated weed management solution. Medium-tall in height with good standability in high production situations.

Vixen (AH) wheat:

Quick vigorous, compact height, similar Septoria & Powdery Mildew to Scepter, similar grain to Scepter, slightly higher screenings, slightly lower TW.

PBA Bendoc faba beans:

A Clearfield variety created from a Nura cross with Samira, maturity similar to Samira, smaller seed, Ascochyta MR (similar), Chocolate Spot MS.

PBA Marne faba beans:

Early flowering variety, suited to low rainfall or short season environments, has produced its highest yields relative to other varieties where yields have been less than 3t. Ascochyta R, Rust MR

Bateman lupins:

A new high yielding lupin variety (11% better than Mandelup 2012-2016). Metribuzin tolerance similar to Jurien, Barlock & Gunyidi. It also has similar maturity to Jurien & Mandelup.

Butler field peas:

A new ‘Kaspa type’ field pea with high yields and improved resistance to bacterial blight over Kaspa. Mid to late flowering and early to mid-maturing.’

Summer Crop / Cover Crop If you’re thinking about sowing a summer or cover crop then give us a call.

We have shirohie millet, winter canola and forage rape on hand now.

Shirohie millet is a fast growing, high yielding, leafy plant used for grazing, hay or silage.

Millet provides a quick high quality feed and shows very good regrowth following grazing.

They can be sown early allowing for quick feed soon after soil temperatures reach 14°C. Shirohie millet provides good quality safe feed and is safe to graze at all stages of development.

No toxicity issues safe to feed at all stages of development

Fast growing and able to be sown early

Guest Speakers-Dan Taylor (DKT Rural) & Sam Kleemann (Plant Science Consulting)

We have been very fortunate to secure both Dan Taylor and Sam Kleemann as guest speakers for our Agronomy Bus Day.

Dan has worked as an agronomist for nearly 20 years in the southern half of Western Australian wheatbelt. In this time he has worked through a wide range of rainfall zones and yield environments from low rainfall Easter wheatbelt to high rainfall south coast environments.

For the last 13 years he has been based in the central wheatbelt medium rainfall zone at Kellerberrin and Cunderdin as an agronomist and partner at DKT Rural Agencies.

Most of his clients are continuous cropping wheat, barley, canola and lupins although there are a few that also have livestock.

One of the biggest challenges Dan faces with his clients is identifying their biggest constraints to production/profitability and often addressing a number of them at once (eg. high weed burdens with resistance and correcting subsoil acidity). Tackling multiple issues and keeping the farm profitable is always the challenge but very enjoyable when the plan all comes together!

Something else we have in common with Dan is when we asked "what has changed farming in your area the most in the last 5 years?", he said "soil amelioration and removing key soil constraints".

Dan will be speaking to us about the opportunities GM Canola presents to our rotations.

Which herbicide formulations maximise ryegrass control?

This is the question we posed to Sam Kleemann.

Sam has spent 20 years in the weeds research team at the University of Adelaide investigating weed ecology & management in areas of brome grass biology, ryegrass seedbank dynamics & tillage system pre-emergent herbicide interactions.

Since October 2018, he has been working with Peter Boutsalis & his Plant Science Consulting team in commercial herbicide resistance testing & undertaking customised trials for herbicide registrants, including studies investigating the bioequivalence of glyphosate formulations & other important active ingredients such as clethodim & propyzamide.
