Five teams from Warren Township middle schools, Warren Central and Walker Career Center participated in the City of Indianapolis VEX Robotics Championship. They set up and practiced

on Saturday, November 16th, and then competed on Sunday, November 17th. Mayor Greg Ballard and the City of Indianapolis were excited to host this second annual event at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Each team of students worked alongside engineers and other industry professionals to design, build, and program a robot to compete against other robots from other teams in a sports-like

game. Teams were competing to win awards for creating business plans, developing cohesive team "brands," cooperating with other teams, forging suitable initiatives and enhancing civic awareness and

passion for STEM fields in modern communities. While attending the championship, students collaborated with other VEX teams from Marion

County. Warren Township schools had a large presence at this event. The Tournament, including all competition hardware, was provided by and operated by members of the Warren Robotics #829 high

school team, Warren students and Warren parents. The video production for the event was provided by

members of the Video Production program and the Center for Sports and Media: FrontRunner Media

Productions. Pictures of the event were taken by members of the Commercial Photography class. All programs are from Walker Career Center.

WCC Happenings

The Sports Marketing program at the WCC has developed a Warrior I-Phone cover to use as a practical experience for students to research, develop and promote school spirit. All money generated will be used to reinvest into the next promotional venture. The next item, a button featuring winter sport athletes, is currently being developed. A future goal would be to operate class much like the TV show "The Apprentice”. While participating with each project, students will learn the “world of marketing” as it relates

to sports while driving school pride and spirit.

WCC Sports Marketing

The Education Professions class at Walker Career Center provides opportunities for senior students to explore careers in education. The students meet for classroom time and also participate in interactive

field experiences. Students are placed with mentor teachers throughout the district to job shadow and gain experience working with children in the classroom setting. During classroom time, students complete course work related to the Indiana state standards to earn college cred-

its from Ivy Tech. Recently, in addition to the regular field experiences, some of the Education Professions students had the opportunity to ven-ture to Stonybrook Middle school to participate in a writing workshop mentoring 7th grade students. The 7th graders in Mrs. Jackson-Dinkins’ classroom formatted narratives and the Education Professions students

sat down with small groups of students to critique and help them revise their drafts. We are so excited about our future teachers!

WCC Education Professions

On Monday, November 18, guests from the German Embassy and a German owned company doing business in the US (STIHL) visited the Walker Career Center (WCC) to share how "vocational" education looks in Germany. At the same time, the presentation raised awareness of the opportunities in the US within German owned companies. The guests are doing this same presentation in 5 other cities around the US. Mrs. Frey, Director of the WCC, stated the following, “I am honored that they have chosen the Walker Career Center as their stop at a secondary school in Indianapolis.” Students who represented various WCC programs attended this presentation. Guests were treated to a WCC tour to end the day.
