Conservation Easements are intended to last forever – and, as the saying goes, forever is a long time! So it’s been really great for me, as a member of the Board of Directors, to learn about all the ways that the Coastal Land Trust works to take care of its portfolio of conservation lands. Here are a few examples:

•Twofull-timebiologistsmonitoralmost 50,000 acres of land the Coastal Land Trust has protected.

•AtourSpringer’sPointPreserve, alocal preserve manager helps manage visitor use.

•Volunteerattorneyshavehelpeddefendourpreserves against threats from third parties.

•OurStewardshipEndowment’sinvestments are overseen by an independent Finance Committee.

•Tomakesurewearefollowingbestpractices,we have taken the time and effort to become accreditedbytheLandTrustAccreditationCommission.

•Ourstaffattorneystakecarewithallnewproj-ects that we have good title and good surveys.

It’s great fun to see the faces of kids who visit placeslikeBrunswickNatureParkorSpringer’sPointPreserveforthefirsttime!TheCoastalLand Trust has saved dozens of other great places, too – woods and creeks, meadows and bogs, waterfronts and beaches.

It takes a huge amount of time, planning and money to transform tracts of undeveloped land into a nature preserve, with access for public, trails, kiosks, and perhaps a picnic shelter or bathroom facility. Fortunately, the Coastal Land Trust is able to partner with many local parks and recreation departments, who have access to state grants for park development, which we don’t.

OurBoardandStaffarecommittedtodoingeven more to “unlock our assets” for chil-dren(andgrown-ups,too),andseveralofour

Astimepasses, however, andlandsubjecttoconservation easement passes to new own-ers, the risk of easement violation increases, a problem that land trusts in many places have experienced. So I’m a strong supporter of a great idea that land trust leaders have come up with –to“self-insure”againstthisrisk–creatinganentitycalledTerrafirma.I’mthrilledtohavebeenappointedtotheBoardofManagersofTerrafir-ma, and to have met my fellow Board members this past month.

Asnewly-electedPresidentoftheCoastalLandTrust, I couldn’t be more proud of this organiza-tion and its people. I’m so happy to say I am a partandtobeabletocontribute!AndliketheCoastal Land Trust, other land trusts throughout the nation, you can be sure, are looking toward the future. Because perpetuity is indeed a very long time!

funders,likeWal-MartandtheZ.SmithReyn-olds Foundation are supporting us in this effort. We’ve got several great tracts of land near towns that would be wonderful nature preserves and parks, and some great new partners, too.

The good news is that every new park or pre-serve opened up means hundreds of children getoutdoorstoenjoynature!Organizedenvi-ronmental education programs are great, but the easiest and best way to create a lifelong sense of engagement with the outdoors is simply make sure that kids have access nearby – places to getmuddy,climbtrees,plantgardens,gofish-ing, camp out, or explore in unstructured ways. We’re all in favor of making more of our places availableforkidstounplugandenjoynature–and your support makes it all possible.

Jimmy Johnson, N. C. DENR, Harry Lee, Currituck County GIS Coordinator, and Chelsea Richardson, Curri-tuck County Planning Dept. Intern, discuss and evaluate options during the site design planning exercise during the Green Growth Toolbox Workshop. The Workshop, hosted by the Coastal Land Trust in Elizabeth City on May 22, focused on how landowners can place lands in conservation as a tool to assist municipalities and coun-ties in conservation planning efforts. The day-long event also included a field trip to the Sample’s Farm located outside of Elizabeth City, which has been permanently conserved under an agricultural conservation easement held by the Coastal Land Trust.

We’re This Close to Hitting the Road!

oNly 50 applicatioNs Needed to reach the goal

Thanks to many of you who replied, we only need 50 more registrations to satisfy the DMV requirements to get our license plate on the road . This has been a long process, but well worth it, as this will provide a new revenue stream that can greatly enhance our land protection ef-forts . For each plate purchased, the land trust will receive $20 to support our work in the coastal plain of North Carolina .

Help us reach our goal by December 31st . Sign up today, or pass it on to a friend – or two! We are so close – too close to let this opportunity slip away .
