Karen’s Korner Summary of September 21, 2016 Meeting – “Business Judgment and Cyber Security”

Mark Lambright, Chairman and Founder of Trident Cyber Advisors, gave a thought-provoking program about the need for upper management to be actively involved in preventing security breaches since they are a business risk and not just an information technology issue. Mark summarized three types of cyber threats: Technology based threats such as malware and phishing; Social engineering threats such as email compromises; and Internal attacks by employees. Mark stated that there is generally a significant delay between a data breach and its identification—an average of 383 days, followed by up to 126 days to contain and correct the breach. He cited the example of the Target data breach in December 2013 in which 70 million records were stolen and 45 million customers were affected. Target lost about $400 million, and the company’s cyber insurance paid about $95 million. Mark suggested that boards of directors identify vulnerable parts of their businesses and engage employees in regular risk/reward conversations, while fitting best practices to industry and com-pany standards. In responding to numerous questions from members, Mark made the following points: We are relatively safe online since banks and credit card companies offer protection to their customers; We should not know what the government is doing to protect computer records since that would give information to those

with malicious intent; and We should change passwords frequently.
