Random Factoid

Facebook Mystery Contest

THIS year is the year of the dragon. The dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, and in ancient China, represented an emperor and power. However, today the dragon is the ultimate sign of success and happiness. If 2012 has been a good year for you, thank the dragon!

KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establish-ment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instruc-tions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Maureen McCarthy from Landenberg, PA.

How long have you been coming to Cape May? Ever since my husband and I started dating, so about 24 years now.

Who are you normally with? My hus-band and my two kids.

Favorite thing about Cape May? It’s such a small, family beach town, and every-thing is within walking distance.

Least favorite thing? I don’t have one!Favorite restaurants? Tisha’s, Lucky

Bones when it’s a family night out, and George’s for breakfast.

Favorite place to stay? At our house in Cape May.

If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would make the beaches a bit flatter. Do you know what I mean? [Yes, we do.]

Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It always makes me laugh! But in all seriousness, it’s very informative.

Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? It takes a long time to get to our home in Penn-sylvania.

What’s your T-shirt size? Medium, please!

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Flying Blue Dragon

THIS funky cocktail was created by CHOW.com to match the blue-curaçao hue of the Na’vi people in the 2010 Oscar-nomi-nated film Avatar. However, it reminds us of the dragon Saphira in Eragon, or the very blue Swedish Short-snout of the Harry Pot-ter series. No matter what famous dragon comes to mind at the sight of this vibrantly blue cocktail, we’re pretty sure that after just a few sips, you’ll have enough courage to travel by any dragon.

Ingredients: 1 oz blue curaçao1 oz light rum3/4 oz Velvet Falernum3/4 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice2 dashes Orange Bitters

Fill a shaker halfway with ice and add all remaining ingredients. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass over ice.

Talk Of The TownRamblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

The Never-Ending StoryWE DON’T know about you, but we’re hav-ing a hard time believing just how long this Stewart’s Root Beer saga has dragged on. The whole thing started way back on May 8, when Stewart’s received its mercantile license, which allows for 48 seats. In June, Code Enforcement Officer John Queenan counted 113 seats in the establishment. And the same number again in July. And 90 in August. Formal warnings were issued to the restaurant, as were summonses. And they were all ignored.

Understandably, other business owners on the Washington Street Mall — the ones who either operate with the number of seats they’re allowed or opt to pay $5000 for every four extra they want, per the rules laid out by the Parking Meter Account Trust — were peeved.

On August 28, there was a municipal court hearing which resulted in the issuance of $600 worth of fines to Stewart’s, a mere slap on the wrist according to some. But on August 29, in accordance with the city code book, City Clerk Louise Cummiskey deliv-ered a real and long-awaited, at least accord-ing to the aforementioned business owners, punishment: the revocation of Stewart’s mercantile license. Now, we figured, the res-taurant would be forced to rectify a wrong, and start playing by the rules, especially since city council voted unanimously to uphold Cummiskey’s decision following an appeal by Stewart’s.

And yet, this wasn’t the case. Stewart’s remained open — without a license. We emailed Cummiskey, asking for the reper-cussion of such behavior. “The City of Cape Continued On Page 14 ?

May has issued a summons to both [co-owner] Sean Dougherty and Stewart’s of Cape May, LLC, on a daily basis, for opera-tion of a business without a proper Mercan-tile License,” Cummiskey told us.

But we weren’t sure what good another summons would do, considering the first few seemed to hold such little weight with Stew-art’s. So we called Deputy Mayor Jack Wich-terman to find out at what point the city can say, simply, enough is enough, march in there and shut Stewart’s down once and for all. We were taken aback by what we learned. “The city is being sued by Stewart’s Root Beer,” Wichterman said. And what’s more, City Manager Bruce MacLeod as well as Louise Cummisky are being sued as individuals as well. On what grounds, we wanted to know? “They claim that we’re harassing them,” Wichterman told us. “It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Do they have a case? We can’t venture a guess, and neither, at this point, can coun-cil memmer (and lawyer by profession) Bill Murray. “I can’t speculate,” he told us last Monday. But Murray was able to tell us that Stewart’s, after the final decision from coun-cil was made, reapplied for another mercan-tile license and was denied. Now, they’ve appealed to a superior court, and they’re suing in the meantime. “I do know that what they’re asking for is equitable relief,” Murray said. “They’re filing a lawsuit seek-ing an order directing the clerk to immedi-ately issue a mercantile license. They have to show immediate and irreparable harm; that’s usually the legal basis for a court issu-ing an injunction.”

We’re not lawyers, but we’re inclined to think that the “harm” Stewart’s is feeling, if

that’s the case, is entirely deserved. When you don’t follow the rules, you have to face the music. It’s been said that Stewart’s co-owner Patrick Rosenello, council president of North Wildwood, has political connec-tions which may have some sway with pow-erful people in these parts. We don’t know about that (and we couldn’t ask him about it, either; when we called, he told us his law-yer had advised him against speaking to the press), but the fact that this could still be going on at all makes us wonder if there isn’t something strange going on here.

At the time this issue went press, we were still about 12 hours away from the October 9 meeting at City Hall to discuss Cape May’s legal council for the impending proceedings. (City Solicitor Tony Monzo has to sit this one out, due to a conflict of inter-est.) We’re curious to see how it pans out, and as always, we’ll keep you posted.

A Night To RememberLAST Thursday was one of those special nights… a night when a big crowd of people had a great time, enjoying the company of other townsfolk (and visitors), enjoying, too, the generosity of local business owners and, in the process, performing a great service to their community.

We are referring to the party we hosted here at EZ Global HQ, the purpose of which was twofold — to celebrate the existence of the Essential Lucky Bones Cookbook, which we published earlier this year, and to raise funds for the West Cape May Christmas Parade.

On both counts, mission accomplished! We celebrated the cookbook by consuming

Page 14: Volume 10, Issue 36 - October 11, 2012

Page 14 Thursday, October 11, 2012

65 pitch-perfect pizzas (the last 30 of which were consumed in SEVEN minutes — you’re human seagulls!), generously supplied by the good people from Lucky Bones, and we sold 42 copies of the book, which were signed by Chief Lucky Boner David Craig and our own Diane Stopyra, who compiled the book.

To wash down those pizza slices, along with delicious treats from Seaside Cheese and Depot Market, there was Reisling, Blush and Table Red from our friends at Cape May Win-ery. For dessert, there was organic ice cream from Bliss, and some coffee and cookies from Higher Grounds. As always (this was our fourth party this year), it felt a little bit like a festival, and what we particularly loved about last Thursday was the amount of money you raised for the parade — $3,500.

It was great to see the Parade Lady, Char-lotte Daily (who started the event 47 years ago) and her granddaughter Cinnamon (what a beautiful name) Kelly, who spent her eve-ning weaving through the throngs (there were at least 300 people there) filling up a big col-lection jar, thanks to your generosity. Thanks also to Santa Claus, played by John Alvarez (we are guessing that kids under the age of six don’t read this column – if they do, sorry for spoiling Christmas!), who manfully donned a thick red suit and a thick white beard on a

VERY balmy night, and the Mayor of West Cape May, Pam Kaithern, who goes door to door all around the borough trying to raise the funds for a parade that takes not a cent from the taxpayers — the cost of around $35,000 comes entirely from donations.

In order for Pam and Charlotte to meet those costs, there are a bunch of other upcom-ing fundraisers, so here’s a handy list…

Sunday, October 14: Enjoy a Southern Fried Chicken dinner at the Chalfonte, cour-tesy of Dot Burton’s nationally acclaimed recipe. Tickets are $25 and are available from the WCM Borough Hall or at the Chalfonte on the night, though you’re advised to book in advance.

Friday, October 26: Join the scouts and families of West Cape May Scout Pack 73 for a festive 5k dusk run. Wear your Halloween costume and run for the fun of it, or cheer on your pals. Contact [email protected] for more information. Or call Kate at 609-204-0999.

Thursday, November 1: Don’t miss the Third Annual Winter Wonderland Parade Fundraiser in Congress Hall’s ballroom. There will be live entertainment, story time with Mrs Claus and Blue the pig, plus sweet and savory treats, and a great silent auction. Donation of $20 per person.

Monday, November 5: The Pilot House is hosting a Traditional Spaghetti Dinner between 4pm and 7:30pm, with all proceeds

benefiting the parade. Cost is $15 per person, and tickets are available at the door.

Sunday, November 18: The West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company is hosting Din-ner and a Show, a new event on the fundrais-ing circuit. There will be a dinner between 4pm and 7pm at the fire hall, followed by the show, “Christmas in Barry’s Opryland” in Borough Hall starting at 7:15pm. At the din-ner, you get to enjoy the fire company’s secret new Chicken Pot Pie, and at the show, you get to enjoy the musical magic of local legend Barry Tischler, who will perform Christmas tunes, country style. The combo ticket is $30. Or, you can buy dinner or the show separately if you only want to partake of one of these events — $20 each. Tickets from WCM Bor-ough Hall or at the door.

Go out and enjoy yourself, and know that you’re benefiting a classic American small-town event. As always, we’ll see you there!

A Day That Will Inspire YouNORRIS Clark has spent a good deal of his adult life trying to bring meaningful cultural events to his beloved Cape May. In the late 1980s, he was a co-founder of the Cape May Music Festival, organized a wildly successful photography workshop with world famous photographer Art Kane, in conjunction with Kodak, and has organized dozens of classes in music, writing, theater, architecture and philosophy through the years. He is also a big supporter of the Cape May Forum and orga-nized the successful re-enactment, in May this year, of the famous race between Henry Ford and Louis Chevrolet

In short, Norris is an imaginative, resourceful man who never tires of mak-ing Cape May a better place in which to live. And we’re very excited about his latest proj-ect, TEDx Cape May. Some of you will know about TED, a non-profit group which runs conferences all over the world, attracting speakers who discuss inspiring subjects, with the mission devoted to Ideas Worth Spread-ing. On Sunday, October 21, Norris is hosting a Cape May version of the event, at Congress Hall. The title of the event is Recreation and Re-creation and will feature 12 talks from some of the regon’s most creative and accom-plished innovators and artists. Guest speak-ers include Curtis Bashaw, of Cape Resorts Group, Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers, Danny Cohen of Fishermen’s Energy, B&B pioneer Tom Carroll, and Jack Wright of Exit Zero.

Tickets cost $50, but this includes a gourmet lunch box and open bar reception. In other words, you get to enjoy 12 inspiring speeches for practically nothing. Register at www.TEDxCapeMay.com.

This festival is so great because it started out

as a small, community thing, and now it’s this big event! What I loved this year was that the Queen Lima Bean gave a coronation speech. I haven’t seen that before. — Michael Kline, Cape May ”“

WHY IS Cape May having a Dragon BOAT Race? Shouldn’t they have a Dragon AIRPLANE Race since dragons really were able to fly? — Cape May

I FEEL like I am always dragon my wagon! — Cape May

REMEMBER Puff the Magic Dragon? And why did he get to be magical too? Isn’t it cool enough just to be a dragon without the magical powers? — Villas

DOES anyone else think that it is kind of odd that the Chinese have all these creatures repre-senting a new year and the only one that is NOT a real animal is the dragon? Just saying. — Cape May

* * *

I HOPE that they had a lot of beans at the festival last week-end because I have never seen so many people at the Lima Bean Festival! — Erma

* * *

I LOVE the new road that leads out to the Ferry but I can’t wait for them to be finished with it already! — Cape May

I THINK West Cape May should start some kind of festival in January to help bring in revenue at a very slow time of the year... Maybe a snowball festival! - Erma

IF DRAGONS were real and you could eat them, I bet they’d taste like chicken. — Cape May

DOES anyone remember the Sea DRAGON Herbery on Ste-vens Street? Actually, I think their sign is still there but it no longer exists in this area. — North Cape May

HEY Exit Zero, thanks for a great party last week but only having 65 Lucky Bones piz-zas was not enough! Maybe next time you could have 165. — Cape May

IN 2013, West Cape May should add corn to the Lima Bean Festival, and then they could call it the Suc-cotash Festival! — Cape May[Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Umm, I think your idea really succo-tashes!]

The UndertowTerry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

GREETINGS all. I was unable to get together for date night this week with my new bestie, Jack Wright, so… I’m winging it. Big week for me at my “real”

job on Morey’s Piers Mariner’s Landing as we unveiled the second edition of Morey’s FEARS, our big Halloween event.

Before these big life events, I often try to find a moment to reflect, and in doing so it dawned on me that, at age 42, for half of my life (okay, maybe two-thirds), I’ve man-aged to get this far making my living as, in no particular order, an actor, a singer, a writer, a karaoke host, and now a haunted house man-ager. Which means I’ve been, in no particular order, overworked, underpaid, underappre-ciated, exhausted, stressed, broke, destitute, poor, penniless, and generally pretty happy. Oh, and my feet hurt.

I was all of these things, plus a few more, the last two weeks as we prepared the big haunt, making sure everyone had a costume for their haunt (Ghost Ship, CarnEVIL, Corn Stalkers, Terror Trench, Other Side, Zom-bie Roamers), and that those costumes were

appropriately distressed, that all the make-up was where it needed to be (there are seven distinct make-up looks my teams are apply-ing, requiring seven different combinations of stuff; airbrush or crème make-up, tooth stain, “Thick Blood”, fake pus, and other assorted tools of grossness) and that all the 100+ actors are trained on each haunt, and given a (theoretical) tool belt full of handy dandy acting tips… which they all promptly ignore or forget at first guest contact.

Or, as Mike Tyson put it, everyone has a game plan ’til they get punched in the face.

Thursday was our soft opening; a chance to perform for family, friends and co-work-ers and, more importantly, a chance to plug

everything in, and make sure it worked, which 95% of it did. It also allowed the actors, accountants, mechanics, painters, reception-ists and lifeguards to get the yim-yams out.

We moved on to Friday and our first pay-ing customers, which adds a level of excite-ment… and about 50 more actors. But, save for a few minor hiccups, all handled themselves with aplomb, the make-up looked great, and the actors were game. The teams in charge of building the haunts, placing the lights, filling the fog and creating the sound all did amazing work and the pier looked like a million bucks. Cost about that, too. But I digress.

Here’s how my average FEARS day goes...1pm: Head in to work to make sure I have

my day together; show charts printed up, staffing changes noted, boring bookkeeping.

2pm: Best part of my day — lunch. The company opens Jumbo’s and feeds everyone each day, which is pretty cool, especially if you like really good pizza and grilled cheeses.

2:30pm: First wave of artists arrive and get into their own costume and make-up.

3pm: We really get humming as actors

arrive two at a time in half-hour blocks.

3pm-6:30pm: Spend this time overseeing and approving make-up, putting out fires (this actor doesn’t like their make-up, this actor’s costume is missing), no one brings me coffee and I don’t have time for a cigarette. This is an energized time of day, giving me opportunity to inter-act with most of the actors, crack a few jokes, keep things loose… which is different for me because I’m usually deadly earnest…

6:30pm: FIRE DRILL!6:45: I give the crew my best

Knute Rockne, a variation on my “Idiot” speech, which goes some-thing like this... “You are going to feel like a total idiot. I encourage you to embrace your inner idiot, and rest easy with the knowl-edge that everyone around you also feels like an idiot, so come together in your fellowship of idiocy and just go for it.”

6:55: Duly inspired, we sneak behind enemy lines (below the pier) where we mass behind our unsuspecting guests and…

7pm: Storm the gates!Friday night I had an Ara-

gorn (Viggo Mortensen in Lord of the Rings) moment as our gaggle of ghouls prematurely stormed the pier and I screamed, “HOLD! There may be a day when zom-bies rush the gates too early but THIS IS NOT THAT DAY! There may be a day when scarecrows and mole mutants get a free pumpkin funnel cake but THIS IS NOT THAT DAY! They may take our lives, but they’ll never take… our lives! ’Cause, you know, we’re zombies!”

God knows I love an audi-ence. Even if they’re being paid.

7:01pm: Morey’s FEARS is open!

7:01-11pm: I serve as roam-ing acting coach, focusing my laser-like intensity on each haunt, all of which, at some point or another, are in need of my innate ability to make stuff up on the spot (like I do in this space every week).

If you can’t tell, this is an exciting few weeks for me and, as I’d like to do it for, oh, the next 30

or so Octobers, I encourage you all to come check it out.

So, I know none of this is ter-ribly germane to the life of a Cape Mayan, but it’s terribly germane to the life of an O’Brien.

Now listen, I know I asked you all to go support Jimmy J. at the Rio Station for karaoke on Friday nights in my absence, but I didn’t mean ALL AT ONCE. Yeesh… (and thanks).

Twice now the wife and I have dined on takeout from Fish & Fancy in Villas, and twice now we have enjoyed solid, well-cooked, tasty meals that are refreshingly unfussy and gen-erous enough that this portly reporter pushed away from the table satisfied. And if you main-tain (financially required) disci-pline like me, you can get in and out for around $25. And it was all just as good as anything I’ve had from The Lobster House.

LOL 2012 Presidential Cam-paign Moment of the Week: Caught an Obama ad Sunday that trotted out MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell as a fact-checker. The same Andrea Mitchell who misleadingly edited a videotape of Mitt Rom-ney talking about the “amaz-ing” Wawa touchscreens as if he’d never seen such a thing in his life, thus making him “out of touch.” Those who have seen the entire video know the “amazing” thing was Romney’s point about how competition breeds innova-tion, like Wawa’s touchscreens. Obama using Mitchell as a fact checker is like Romney using Michael Vick as his Puppy Czar.

Speaking of Vick, two years for animal cruelty may seem light to some, but Donte Stallworth killed a human and got no time, Roman Polanski raped a 13-year-old girl and lives in a Swiss cha-let, and President Obama once ATE a dog. All of this means only one thing — Vick must be a Republican.

That does it for this week. Hopefully next week I can hit some Cape May spots. And remember, if you’d like us to hit YOUR establishment for a little friendly fire, drop us a line at [email protected].

’Til next week, don’t get caught in the Undertow.

The Mad Batter party had a great turn-out. It was a fundraiser for Animal Outreach, since

they are sponsoring one of the boats in the upcoming Dragon Race. I was thinking about paddling, but I promised I’d help with the organization. I’ll be working in the marshalling area... though I’m not entirely sure yet what that means! — Linda Steenrod ”“

HALLOWEEN is right around the corner, and you can tell. Some people put up orange lights, candy is in every aisle of the supermarket, and

those costume stores pop up out of nowhere and sell like crazy until they liquidate on November 1. Hollywood as always has coor-dinated its calendar beautifully with the release of Hotel Transylvania, a new ani-mation feature that was the top grossing film released a couple of weekends ago. But before you check in to Hotel Transylvania, check out the original pad of Hollywood’s most notorious vampire.

Nosferatu is the quintessential Halloween (and vampire) movie. Made in 1922, this silent film is the hallmark — if not the originator — of the spooky thriller. The subtitle of the film is “A Symphony of Horror” because the music accompaniment has always been one of its strongest assets. Music in any film, especially a silent film, helps complete the sensory experience, but this even truer for a bone chilling horror f lick! You know the feeling, when the music

is becoming ominous... how it makes you sink into your seat or maybe grip the arm-rest a little tighter. You know what’s coming.

In the third and final installment of the silent film series at East Lynne Theater Company, a screening of this silent clas-sic will come alive with musical arrange-ments by award-winning organist Wayne Zimmerman. So far the other two films in this series have been a hit, impressing audi-

ences with how robust a silent film can be when screened with live music!

In this film, based on the Braham Stoker novel Dracula, Count Orlok is moving into a small German town and looking at new places. The real estate agent is somewhat baff led by his client’s strange mannerisms, and by his habit of sleeping all day and coming out only at night. The count notices something as well — namely how attractive the agent’s wife is!

One free Film Festival weekend pass to the first person who sends the correct answer to this question to [email protected] (and don’t go online to figure it out — I’ll know you’re cheating!): How many times in the film does Count Orlok blink? As you get ready for the spooky season, go see this classic film with live music — a chance you may never get again! Nosferatu will screen Sunday, October 14, 8:00pm at 500 Hughes Street. For tickets ($15), call 609-884-5898 or visit eastlynnetheater.org. The movie is presented in conjunction with the Cape May Film Society, host of the 12th Annual Cape May Film Festival.

The Movie ColumnBy Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

Twilight, who? Nosferatu is the “hallmark” of the spooky thriller, and the quintessential

vampire flick.

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

and f lintlocks with which to persuade the locals to start taking the opium, and were enjoying some much needed r&r shoreside. In between tattoos: I have the entire coast-line of New Jersey on my back, a soaring eagle on my chest and I will not horrify you with the location of my striking cobra.

Anyway, in my drunken state I was much alarmed to see a dragon come into the bar, as bold as a cheap hoor in Leith seaport. I drew my pistol and shot it right ‘tween the eyes, of course, only to find it was actually a cunning facsimile od wood and silk and

T HERE once was a time when people believed in the Cape May Dragon. Oh, yes. Why, I hear you ask, who would believe in dragons, save perhaps for some

simple soul from an institution for the men-tally delicate, or a native of Wildwood?

Well, I confess that sightings most com-monly involved those folks, but on more than one occasion respectable dog-fearing folks also ran screaming in from a dark foggy night claiming they had seen the leg-endary beast.

It was the size of a steam-powered tramcar, witnesses swore, red as blood with scales as black as the Earl of Hell’s waistcoat and teeth like kitchen knives. It undulated out of the swirling mist, they raved, roar-ing like a mad bull and f lame shot out of its mouth. As they f led for their lives they would hear its victory cry, a peculiar haunt-ing laughter, and they never ventured out of the house/escaped from their mental insti-tution after dark again.

The idea had come after my time in Old Peking. We had been transporting opium

glass. Well, once the fellas inside had been carted off to hospital (or whatever equiva-lent there was in these days for penniless peasants with gunshot wounds) I was much intrigued and had the contraption packed and shipped back to Cape May.

In no time at all I had gathered together a crew: myself controlling the head, Henry Ford in the middle cycling a clever con-traption to make the wings f lap and Ernie Hemingway bringing up the rear, where he was free to defecate at will, adding to the authenticity. Our special trick was the f lames from the mouth. For that I had the Young Albert of the day perched atop a little platform in the throat, facing backwards and whenever he made that peculiar little growl and crossed his eyes to indicate wind on the way I thumbed my trusty lighter at his nether parts and a blast of blue f lame would gout out.

Well, we had the best of times, retir-ing only when we encountered a mob from Wildwood carrying pitchforks. We set them alight, of course, but the fun had gone out of it rather.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush

«EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists.

This week’s recipients are Teresa and Chris Stephany who, coinci-dentally were getting married at the Cove when we ran into them, and needing a bouquet!

Where are you from? (Teresa) We’re both from Scranton, Penn-sylvania.

Why did you choose the Cove for your wedding? We wanted a view of the lighthouse... unfortunately, it’ s too foggy!

When is the last time you received flowers, Teresa? Last month.

The Answer LadyWise answers to perplexing questions

THE Answer Lady invites inqui-ries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quanda-ries, matters of the heart and eth-ics. If you’d like to send a query,

write to [email protected] Answer LadyI have been invited to two weddings on

the same day. One is the wedding of a family member, which is lovely because I’ll get to see lots of relatives. The other is my best friend’s sister, whom I have known for years. One is at a very high-end reception hall, the other will be a more low-key event. How do I decide which wedding to attend? — Popular

Dear StallingThe Answer Lady can tell you how NOT

to decide: you do not get to choose based upon which event you think will be more fun, or which will be held at the nicer venue. Not to mention these criteria can be mislead-ing: the Answer Lady once attended a wed-ding at a lovely venue where the bride and groom changed into shorts and flip-flops at the reception, which featured a keg of beer, chips and pretzels. Had the Answer Lady

known this was on the agenda, she would not have been tottering around in five-inch heels and a tight dress and would have brought a Primo Hoagie along. Technically, whichever invitation you received first, and to which you presumably RSVP’d, is the one you are stuck with. We do not get to change the game because a ‘better’ invitation comes along.

Let us propose for the sake of argument that you received both on the same day. Is there any way you can make an appearance at both? Perhaps the ceremony for one, and the

reception for the other? If you can, that would be lovely.

And stash a Primo Hoagie in the car, just in case. (The Sharp Italian is the Answer Lady’s favorite, FYI.)

Dear Answer LadyI have a good friend who just got engaged

to a loser. For the past couple of years she has cried on my shoulder about his transgres-sions, which include cheating on her, long stretches of joblessness, substance abuse, and disciplinary issues involving her young child. Now I am supposed to be excited that he popped the question, and I’m not. What do I say to her? — Floored

Dear FlooredOnce again, the Answer Lady will lead

with what you should NOT say: we do not say “What are you thinking/smoking/doing?” or “If you think this has a snowball’s chance in hell, I’ll have what you’re having,” etc.

You say “I just want you to be happy. If you think this will make you happy, I hope you are right.” You needn’t have a parade, but don’t close the door on your friendship. She’ll likely need you sooner than later.

What’s Your Story?Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here?

Who are you and where are you from? Maria Virbitsky from Scranton, Pennsylvania.

What do you do? I work as a salesperson at DT Ryder.

Why are you here? I’m wait-ing for a very small wedding that is about to take place on the beach. I’m the photographer! I’m not quite sure yet where we’re celebrating afterward... just that we will celebrate!

Do you come to Cape May often? Every year since I was little!

The theme of this week’s Exit Zero is dragons. Do you have an opinion on fire-breath-ers? I love the medieval stories that go along with dragons; I believe they actually existed at one point in history.

Through October 13Cape May Stage presents Time Stands Still. Sarah and James, a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent, try to find happiness in a world gone awry. This moving new play prompts poignant questions about responsi-bility — to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our community, and to our world. Performances will be held Wednesdays through Sundays through October 13 at 8pm. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is located at the cor-ner of Bank and Lafayette Streets. Admission is $35 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $15 for students.

East Lynne Theater Company presents It Pays to Advertise: A long-running hit when it opened on Broadway in September of 1914, this screwball comedy by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett was twice made into a movie: a silent in 1919, and in 1931 with Carole Lombard. The premise — and prom-ise — that anything can be sold in America is at its core, but it also examines the very nature and romance of advertising and its influence. Shows run Wednesdays through Saturdays through October 13 at 8pm, and Sunday, October 7 at 7:30pm. Shows are held at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30 general; $25 senior; $15 students; ages 12 and under free.

and frightening scarecrows compete for prizes during the annual Scarecrow Contest on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. Community partici-pants submitted full-sized scarecrow entries that are displayed on the grounds of the estate along “Scarecrow Alley.” Contest winners will receive prizes in various categories, with a People’s Choice Award and $200 to the cre-ators of the scarecrow that garners the most votes. Participate by voting! Each scarecrow will have a numbered photo on display.

Liz Hertneck Stier of Cape May Beach sent us these photos of her and her 85-year-old grandmother, Elva Hertneck of North Cape May. Liz and her husband, Brendt Stier, took Elva on a trip to Germany and Sweden this

past September, so that she might trace back her lineage. This shot was taken in front of Castle Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, Germany.

Activity Of The WeekA weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: One for the Gipper

IN THE midst of the 2012 presidential campaign, why not take a look back at one of our country’s great cam-paigners? On October 27, Dr Myles Martel will give a lecture, “Ronald

Reagan’s Legacy: Lessons for Today’s Citi-zen Leaders.”

Ronald Wilson Reagan was born just over 100 years ago, in 1911. He graduated from Eureka College in 1932 and started his career in entertainment on the radio, as a sports announcer. In 1937, he made his film debut in Love is on the Air, playing a radio news reporter, and he continued to act for the next 30 years, in over 50 movies. Act-ing led to his political career — he served as president of the Screen Actors Guild before being elected governor of California. He was elected president in 1980.

America loved Reagan, even when we disagreed with him — he carried 49 states in 1984. He was funny, and he was tough — he shrugged off a would-be assassin’s bul-let with jokes, telling his doctors, “I hope you’re all Republicans.” He acknowledged our national distaste for politicians, say-

called Dutch by his father, the Gipper for playing George Gipp in Knute Rockne: All-American, the Teflon President for his ability to keep scandal from sticking, and the Great Communicator — and Myles Martel was his communications consultant.

Dr Martel, who is one of the nation’s leading communications advisors, was Ronald Reagan’s debate coach in 1980, when he challenged Jimmy Carter. In the kickoff to a “Lessons of History” lecture series, Martel will share his “unique per-spective on what made Ronald Reagan one of the transformative presidents of the 20th century.” The mulitimedia presentation will be held at 4pm on October 27 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, followed by a meet-the-speaker reception at The Queen Vic-toria at 5:30. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Martel & Associ-ates. Tickets to this limited event are avail-able for $15 for the lecture; $30 for the lec-ture and reception. Reserve your tickets by calling 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278.

ing, “Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.” Reagan joked about his age, saying, “Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.” It sometimes seemed he was only serious about his jellybeans.

«HEIDI is a beautiful Pit Bull who is approximately five-years-old, and she

has the soul of an angel. This gentle spirit just wants to love and be loved. Heidi was a stray found with another dog and since arriving at the shelter has only shown a desire to be with people. Heidi really loves going for walks, running and getting attention. She just needs a little leash training. Heidi can go to a home with dogs or kids. The adoption fee is $95.

«DANTE is about three years old and 60 pounds. He is very strong but well-

mannered, and he loves people so much, his whole body shakes for joy around them. Dante loves to go for walks, but if given the chance he will happily turn a walk into a run. Because of Dante’s size, he should go to a breed-savvy owner who can provide gentle but firm discipline. Won’t you spare some love? The adoption fee is $95.

«ROCKY was brought to the shelter in May, and now he’s living in a foster

home... one of the shelter employees took him home because he was so stressed out living there. Rocky is housebroken and good with kids and cats, just not other dogs. Because he’s a laid-back older gentleman, he’d love to hang on the couch and watch TV with you. Rocky wants nothing more than to love you. Will you let him? The adoption fee is only $35.

the specks in my binoculars that should have been high-flying hawks were little orange f lashes. Masses of them. I’m not versed in Lepidoptera speak, so I don’t know the appro-priate term for lots of butterflies.

But it was a lot. Not near as many as in 1976 or 1977

(before anybody was paying attention to monarchs, including me) when I witnessed a

Bird DroppingsThe weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

ANYBODY seen any monarchs around lately? Monarch but-terflies. Big orange and black insects about the size of your average chocolate chip cookie.

You could hardly turn your head without see-ing one a couple of weekends ago.

Wait a minute, you’re thinking, isn’t this supposed to be a column about birds.

Yes. Or maybe mostly. Or maybe no what gave you that idea? The title?

Fact is, most people who enjoy birds don’t let their partiality stop where feathers begin and end. Any ol’ envoy of nature is an odds on favorite to be appreciated, especially some-thing as stunning as a monarch butterfly.

I was at Cape May Point State Park and even people who wouldn’t cross the street to see a bird were stopping in their tracks. Opening their mouths. Nudging each other and commenting on all the butterflies.

Not bugs. Not insects. Butterflies. They really recognized them.

Like I said, I was at Cape May Point State Park. Normally I’m on the Hawkwatch Platform watching for hawks, but that day

f light so massive that Sunset Boulevard was paved with butterfly wings.

Dismembered wings. The sort that fall to the pavement when cars hit f lying butterflies.

Remember, there were a lot fewer cars on Sunset Boulevard at the end of September back in 1976. But there were massive num-bers of butterflies.

So why am I telling you about this spec-tacular aggregation when it’s past? Well, because you may still have a chance to see it. It’s possible, that we could have one last push, especially with the cold front pushing them through.

In the evening, when tired monarchs call it a day, the goldenrod on the dunes turns orange beneath the weight of monarchs. Roost trees, facing east towards the rising sun, are festooned with these jeweled trea-sures.

Wings closed, monarchs look like dead leaves. Wings open they look like a bright, orange dollop of stained glass window.

Observatory are keeping tabs on the migra-tion. They’ve been involved in doing annual surveys for a number of years now. They have tagging programs and demonstrations and it’s all free…

Well, it doesn’t cost anything to just head for Cape May Point and watch what quali-fies as one of New Jersey’s most spectacular natural spectacles — the southbound migra-tion of monarch butterflies.

And if you miss the real thing, you can stop by CMBO and pick up something with a monarch on it — shirts, jewelry, magnets - even a beautiful hand-blown glass chrysalis that looks just like the real thing! And for your shopping convenience, the Cape May Bird Observatory is open 7-days a week from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

So head over to CMBO, THE place for all of your nature needs, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736). You can ask the staff for help, you can pick up a FREE birding map and checklist and you could pick up a few other items since there is so much to choose from. Our staff are always willing to help with any questions.

While you are there, scan the book-

shelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section (maybe even a slightly used field guide for the kitchen counter), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (which is FREE when you become a member),

Bird Droppings? From Page 103

or pick up some of the newest HAWKS in Flight clothing for your wardrobe. Or just browse around; I’m sure something will catch your eye. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it to Cape May, you’ll just have to let your fingers do the bird-ing online at BirdCapeMay.org, or call 609-884-2736 — we do mail order, too!

You can join Pete for his regularly sched-uled Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30 am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. FREE loaner binoculars are available for the walk. Cost for the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members.

Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves informa-tion, insight and even fantasy into a net that cap-tures minds and hearts. He has written for virtu-ally every birding publication and for the New York Times.

We sold 500 tickets for the car, which is a silver convertible with a black top, six-cylinder. The

list price is $29,500. The same woman — Suzanne Taylor — who won the raffle two years ago won again this year. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a great cause — Kiwanis has given away $100,000 in scholarship money in the last five years. —Jack Wichterman ”“
