As the Grand Master of the Alpha-Pi chapter of Kappa Sigma, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all alumni from this, our well-regarded chapter house at Wabash. Nearly two years ago, our chapter was placed under trusteeship by our National fraternity coordinators. This ac-tion put us on a path to recovery that has been long and difficult, and yet rewarding in the end. We have reached our goal: to be removed from our status of “under trusteeship” and to be once again recognized as an upstanding and successful chapter.

But this is not the end of the road; rather, it is a new begin-ning. Through the process that we have undergone, we have learned much. We are better organized and better aware of our goals and potential as a chapter, and we can now contribute more to the community than before through philanthropy fundraising efforts.

As we experience this reawakening of our chapter, we continually undergo change. We are reconnecting with old traditions that have merit, and revis-ing and reinventing those aspects of our brotherhood that need to change. Through this process of development, we are appreciative of any support and advice that you have to offer. Please drop us a line, or even stop by if you feel so inclined.

Four years and several thou-sand dollars later, a dream became reality. The Glee Club ventured into the outskirts of the Amazon, high above the legendary rainforests to land 10,000 feet above sea level in Quito, Ecuador. A dream come true for many, a second trip for others, but all things aside we were united for one purpose…to spread the fame of her honored name. Our Glee Club which is composed of just around 44 members, made an epic journey into the native tribes of Ecua-dor, through the historic streets of Quito, and experienced the resonance of Catholicism as we admonished the incredible ca-thedrals. We sang to crowds of people who never let it end on the final song, and experienced young Ecuadorian children in school and on the playground as we exchanged stories and songs. We ate guinea pig and discovered the glory (in my opinion) that is Ahí.

For some, the Spanish may have been rusty or nonexistent, the culture of a people that can

trace their history back for mil-lennia may have been over-whelming, but music brought us together for fun, fellowship, and an unforgettable experience.

Under the leadership of our Director, Richard Bowen, and Dan Rogers, the Department Chair of the Language Depart-ment, we spread out across the amazing sites of Ecuador, ziplining over a valley 1000 feet below, hiking legendary Pichin-cha, and spending the night in a village called San Clemente, where the history, culture, and tradition of the Inca remain a vital part of their lifestyle. We toured the streets of Cuenca, and experienced its rich history. We shopped in Otavalo, the largest outdoor vendor market in Ecuador; and we did some late night dancing in the dis-cotecas of Quito.

Ecuador was a truly life-changing experience, creating a perspective and an appreciation that some of us may have never known. We laughed, danced, sang, and lived among the people of Ecuador, creating life-

long friendships, and the hopes of a not too distant return. My words and brief synopsis of two weeks of a truly captivating experience and endearing relationships can-not accurately paint the thoughts, the beauty, and the memories that now lay on the cobbled streets and mountainsides in Ecuador. Our Kappa Sigmas spread the fame of her honored name for Wabash, and laid our apples of gold in pictures of silver, so that our talents may have touched someone, and put a light in the hearts of many.

Current Alpha-Pi Glee Clubbers were joined in Ecaudor by recent alumni.

It was a strong showing for Wabash’s Men’s Tennis team last season. Current Kappa Sigma junior Peter Gunderman and sopho-more Ian Leonard helped the team to a third place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference stand-ings. This was the second straight year the program finished third in the league. Gunderman, play-ing two singles the entirety of last season, went 11-15 in singles play and finished 12-17 overall in doubles play. In his first year on the tennis team, Leonard achieved a 22-9 record in singles while go-ing 15-18 in doubles play. “It was

After a dismal academic perfor-mance in fall 2009, Alpha Pi Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity made a huge turnaround the following se-mester. In that first semester, Alpha Pi placed 8th with a GPA of 2.92, which is well below the fraternity average of 3.02 and the all-campus average of 3.03. Fuelled by disappointment, the chapter catapulted to 2nd among fra-ternities with a GPA of 3.03, eclips-ing the fraternity average of 2.93 and all-campus average of 2.95. Looking into the fall of 2010, Alpha Pi seeks to make improvements and continue academic success at Wabash College.

great how we came together at the end to earn a third place finish in the conference,” said Leonard. Peter also had high praise for last year’s showing. “Last season was a lot of fun and I’m really look-ing forward to what we can put together next year,” he said. This year’s team will return all of last year’s starters, as the upperclass-men on the team was composed of only sophomores and juniors. The tennis team is looking forward to another successful season, as they face rival Depauw, a new addition to the conference this year.

However, be-ing someone who never gives up I decided to at least fol-low through with the recruit-ment. Arriving at the campus several weeks early I was out of my comfort zone, and in a place that was alien to me. With some time I learned the playbook for my linebacker position, met my teammates, and made new friends. When school did start I rushed and

Everyday I look for-ward to practice, both as a place where I can relieve the stress of my classes and unwind, and most importantly as the place where I would most rather be. Instead of trying to balance foot-ball, I realized that football bal-ances and truly fulfills my time as Wabash. I am really looking forward to what the next three years of Little Giants football has to offer me.

The Caveman ∙ Page 6 Volume 2, Issue 1What Are All of the Composites?

Brothers,

Our composite photographs are in a sorry state. They have been neglected for many years. Most of them are missing. Many have molded to a point beyond restoration. These cannot be displayed or they will not last. Still some are in good shape, but in a battered old frame. To preserve for you, the alumni, these important records of our brotherhood, the ac-tive brotherhood of Alpha-Pi Chapter—In conjunction with my father, local gallery owner Jeffrey Thompson—have launched the Composite Restoration Project.

I’ll outline the Project briefly. The house has been using Vantine Imaging, a New York based photography firm, since the early ‘60s. To replace any composites we would go through them. They have digital records of every composite printed after 2002, mean-ing that those composites could be replaced for the same price as a new composite (around $1500, depending on size). They also have retained photographic negative of every com-posite between 1979 and 2002. Composites between those years can be replaced in full size (the large “master” composite that we are used to). The price for those is a $100 flat rate plus $20 per head, placing them between $1300 and $1800 depending on the size of the house at the time. For composites before 1979, there are two options for replacement. The first: if we can track down the “master” composite, and if we can replace all missing photographs, Vantine can digitally scan and reproduce the master composite. The fee for this is rather high, much higher than most would be comfortable paying for a composite. The other option, the more attractive of the two, involves the 9”x11” personal composites given to every brother. With one of these in hand, a new 19”x24” composite print can be made for much cheaper. But that is dependent on our receipt of personal composites.

The current plan is to try and replace all missing “master” composites from 1990 onward with new masters. We have selected this date because we have most of the com-posites from the ‘90s, whereas most from the ‘80s are missing, and would be expensive to replace. We are asking to borrow the personal composites of any alumnus who graduated before 1990. If you have any that you might be willing to let us borrow, please contact me at [email protected] or 317-363-7080.

What can you do to help? The active brotherhood simply does not have the funds to make this Project a success in any reasonable amount of time. We must rely on your dona-tions. Of course, you could make a donation to the general fund. We’ll allocate that money toward heavily effected years. But we suggest that you get together with your pledge class, or your pledge family, or the brothers who were actives during your era, and go in together on a composite. Through collaboration, we will not only foster brotherhood, but also ensure the preservation of your memories.

Michael “Biscuits” Trevino, ‘12: While most people spend their college sum-mers lounging around on beaches sipping cold ones, I had the

opportunity to work in the Col-lege’s Biology department with Dr. Patrick Burton. We studied the regenerative prosperities of the organism Nematostella vectensis, which is essentially a glorified jelly fish. The hope is that some of the genes under study can be translated to work with other organisms and help elucidate the evolutionary history of the Nematostella and other closely related organisms. Staying at the college during the summer is pretty dull in com-parison to the shenanigans and camaraderie common during the academic year, but the experi-ence of working in a full-blown research lab was truly invalu-

able.Seth Francis Ein-

Evans, Jr., ‘13 After a challenging freshman year at Wabash Col-lege, Edward Evans Jr. was awarded the opportunity of re-

searching biochemistry under the tutelage of Professor Ann Taylor. The focus of the in-ternship was a newly-founded membrane protein named yhim. Prior study suggests that this protein is less prevalent in bac-teria that are resistant to certain antibiotics. Also, it is believed that this protein plays an essen-tial role in disallowing certain bacteriophage from bursting cell membranes of bacteria, thus stopping the spread of viruses. Edward did not reveal conclusive evidence of either hypothesis but, he will continue to do research on the yhim pro-tein throughout the school year in hopes of greater discoveries in science.

Volume 2, Issue 1Seniors Return From Study Abroad

Aaron Cantu: The first view out of my airplane window of Bali was abso-lutely beautiful, and was nothing less for the remained of the trip. I had no idea what was in store for me step-ping off the plane, but 4 months in In-donesia turned out to be an absolutely amazing adventure. My program center was based in Bedulu, a small village to the north-east of Denpasar, the capital of Bali. It is a beautiful place to call home. The village is riddled with tall palm trees, wild roaming chickens, and the zipping by of motorbikes down the main road. My classes were taught in an open air classroom which allowed for a wonderful breeze on those hot Bali days. Being able to touch a re-freshing rain during the rainy season from my desk was another spoil of studying there.

The intense language course al-lowed me to communicate with locals and become integrated into the culture, as opposed to being just another tourist. After a mere week of class we were dropped off in a nearby village and expected to survive with our limited language skills. It was a frightening experi-

ence at first, but once I met a nice Bali-nese masseur, my nerves were calmed. We talked about America and my time in Bali while drinking a tasty cup of Balinese coffee and viewing a beauti-ful panorama of seemingly endless rice fields; all this in Bahasa Indonesia. It was my first taste of the wonderfully hospitable culture of the Balinese. This was a regular occurrence in Bali; being invited into peoples homes for meals after a mere five minutes of conversation was not uncommon. It’s the culture that allows for one to be completely immersed into Balinese life. I have been to temple ceremonies with my family, joining them side by side in prayer on some of the most holy of Balinese Hindu celebrations.Along with wonderful people, the island

also contained breathtaking scen-ery. I climbed the active volcano of Batur and witnessed the sun-rise over the clouds on its peak. I felt as though I was on top of the world, on some secret perch that only few have been granted to experience. I have ran my toes through sands of every color on some of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in Bali. I have swam with dolphins in open ocean at sunrise with the view of mountains jutting into the ocean as my background. I have even hunted eels by hand through rice terraces with only the aide of starlight and fireflies. The experiences that I gathered will never be able to be fully understood through these words, or those of any others. I appreci-ate immensely the opportunity given to me by Wabash College to experience all that has been set out for me. I have grown in so many aspects of my life and consider myself a new man.

Jorge Rostro: It’s my first semester back at Wabash from Aberdeen, Scotland. I had an amazing time abroad. I met numerous people from across Europe, not to mention my flat mates which are from Sweden, England, Scotland, and Lithuania. During the first five weeks, I explored the city center. It was absolutely beautiful, although at first I could not enjoy it as much because it was cold. I traveled to the local museums and pubs in an effort to acquaint myself with Scottish culture. One thing that stood out from Aberdeen was the friendly people and the granite buildings of which gave the city a nice feel. While abroad, I purchased a Euro-Pass and backpacked through Europe for three weeks. I traveled to London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Venice, Budapest, Berlin, and Czech Republic and of course to Bologna. In London, I visited Notre Dame Ca-thedral, the city center, and went out to have a taste of London’s night life. In Paris, I visited the Eiffel Tower and the Catacombs. The Catacombs are an underground

place where the French stored dead bodies. In Bologna, I saw both of the towers that are unique to our chapter. Life abroad was great and fascinating. Now that I’m back at Wabash, I hope to share my experience with under-classmen so that they too can feel motivated to study abroad. The experience was one of a kind, a memory that I will never forget.

Aaron Bonar: Right now I’m at the Maurer School of Law (IU - Bloomington) for (obviously) law school. The semester is just starting, so things are pretty busy.

Clay Zook: I am now living once again in Anderson, IN, and I am working at Stanley Access Technologies located in Indianapolis. Stanley Access Technologies is the company that has installed most of the automatic doors within Walmart, Lowe’s, Kohls, and CVS stores. It’s parent company is Stanley which owns Black & Decker and Best Locks. After some time, I am contemplating the idea of get-ting my MBA in International Business. Prior to that I would like to attend the Goethe Insti-tute in Germany for a couple of weeks to work on my German skills. Now, I have no idea if I will actually accomplish either of these two goals, and they may change. But this is what my plan is at the moment.

Jon Torrez: I’m about to head to school again to get my master’s in either public policy and management or education-al administration. Most likely will be headed to UT Browns-ville or Austin. Right now I’m currently located at South Padre Island, Texas (if any of my pledge brothers want to head over here, give me a heads up) and I work in Brownsville at an accounting firm as the senior manager. However, I will be working on a political campaign soon and get my teaching and accounting certification soon as well. Not to mention I am the new AAA for Alpha-Pi.

Mike Scott: I now live in Portage, IN and am cur-rently taking classes online at the Art Institute of Pitts-burgh for a second bachelor’s in animation.

Cody Grady: Live in Indianapolis, IN and work as a house technician/production assistant at the Phoenix Theatre

Chapter Wins At Leadership Conference Alpha-Pi Chapter was honored in many respects at the most recent Kappa Sigma Leadership Conference in New Orleans. The chapter won awards marking outstanding campus involvement, chapter improvement, communication, alumni advising, and pledge education. The Campus Involvement Award was given in recogni-tion of the wide variety of sports, clubs, and activities that brothers participate in on the Wabash campus. In par-ticular, the chapter boasts the most number of participants in Glee Club among any fraternity, making up almost half of the total Glee Club. Alpha-Pi received the Most Improved Chapter Award due to its remarkable increase in GPA and ritual proficiency. While the all campus GPA lingered at roughly 3.0, the chapter’s GPA improved to nearly 3.2, the second-highest average GPA among fraternities at Wabash. The chapter’s ritual proficiency improved from minimal to over 50%. The communication award was given to Alpha-Pi in large part because of Jon Torrez’s diligent work in increasing communication with alumni. Steve Golliher received the Most Out-standing Alumnus Advisor Award and the Most Outstanding First Year Volunteer Award due to his commitment to Alpha-Pi. Brother Golliher devoted vast amounts of his time and energy to improving the chapter this past year. The final award the chapter received was the Pledge Education Award. This award was given to the chap-ter to recognize the comprehensive pledgeship program developed by the chapter and particularly the chapter’s GMC, Cory Tiedeman. Overall, these five awards demonstrate the incredible efforts of the chapter towards improvement over the past year.

Class of 2012 Prepares to Head AbroadKelvin Burson: The importance of taking steps

towards opening doors and taking advantage of every op-portunity is at the absolute top of my priorities. . I first en-tered campus as a student that hoped to follow the wishes of his family and pursue the study of medicine. It has al-ways been my goal and how I perceived the future. I have always been the creative sort, never leaving the music

and art hallways of my high school. Now I am still the same way, the Fine Arts Center is my home. From my studies to my job, it is where I belong. It became very clear to me, over the time of my enrollment here, that I will not be happy as a medical practitioner. The classes offered in Accademia Italiana program in Florence Italy are perfect for what it is that I plan to do with my career. Being the center of the arts, I expect the classes in Florence to be rigorous and fulfilling. The courses that they offer seemed to have been tailored to my needs, both in my major and graduation plan. I am clearly very excited about the semester ahead of me but am not thrilled at the amount of paperwork yet to be done this next couple of months.

Michael Trevino is a Biology and German double major planning on spending his spring semester in Vienna, Austria. He plans on primarily studying German literature and culture while at the University of Vienna, but more importantly will be immersing himself

in the language to the fullest extent. He believes that a worldly education that extends beyond the classroom is one of the central tenants of a liberal arts education, and hopes that his study abroad experience will both enhance and complement his instruction at Wabash thus far.

Brian Kested: During the Spring semester, I will be studying abroad in Mont-pellier, France. Being a French major, the decision to study abroad was sim-

ple, but the reason I chose Montpellier specifically of its exceptional courses in International Relations, Political Theory, and Hegelian Philosophy. Because they are conducted in French, these courses will meld my love of the french language with my interests in other disciplines. Such an opportunity rarely presents itself at Wabash. Ad-ditionally, I wish to become fluent in French while abroad and, living with a french family, become more aware and appreciative of french tradition and culture. Ideally, this experience will lead to a greater understanding of my-self while concurrently gaining a more comprehensive insight into the plight of a foreign people.

Brothers Craig O’Connor, Joe Re-ese, Donovan Bisbee, Brian Kested, and Terry Sullivan are also studying abroad.
