IB mission statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring,

knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural under- standing and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to de- velop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life- long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

“Making a difference in Education for a better future!”

pare students for life. It aims at providing a stimulating academic programme and a friendly learning environment that enable students to reach their full potential intel- lectually, physically and emotionally. King Abdulaziz School prepares students to be open to other perspectives, values and traditions whilst recognizing their own identity and taking pride in their cultural heritage .

KAS VISION STATEMENT

MYP Model

THE CURRICULUM

The MYP consists of eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individu- als and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Student study is supported by a minimum of 50 hours of instruction per subject group in each academic year. In years 4 and 5, students have the option to take courses from six of the eight subject groups, which provides greater flexibility.

The MYP: a unique approach, relevant for a global society The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

MYP teachers organize the curriculum with appropriate attention to:

• Teaching and learning in context. Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and the world that they have experienced. Using global contexts, MYP students explore human identity, global challenges and what it means to be internationally minded.

• • Conceptual understanding. Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disci- plines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically.

• • Approaches to learning (ATL). A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, ap- proaches to learning provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these skills help students learn how to learn.

• • Service as action (community service). Action (learning by doing and experiencing) and service have always been shared values of the IB community. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Service as action is an integral part of the programme, especially in the MYP community project.

• • Language and identity – MYP students are required to learn at least two languages. Learn- ing to communicate in a variety of ways is fundamental to their development of intercultural understanding and crucial to their identity affirmation.

International Culture Day

On this occasion of the International Cultural Day, King Abdul Aziz School celebrated this fabulous event which pro- vided students with opportunities to explore and interact with other cultures. This event displayed a mass amount of the diversity from the students and the community. The young learners hosted the Cultural Day Event by displaying themes relevant to their country choice which featured information, food, folk dance, and pieces of culture and art from that country. The young learners developed an open mind for other cultures. Taking time to research and prepare their booths, the students enjoyed the process as much as the event itself. This event showcased international mindedness which KAS offers to the community and to the world where young learners are groomed to be leaders, and where ideas become a reality.

Field Trips

Grade 6 students paid a visit to Taiba University with their homeroom teacher, Mr. Mohammed Othman. The studen

National Day Celebrations

Our school celebrated the National Day on Wednesday 19th Sep-

tember, 2018. Parents were invited to school to share their chil-

formed a skit which centered on the theme of patriotism, citizen-

ship and ownership to their country.

The students, raising flags of Saudi Arabia, also participated in folklore dances showing noth- ing but pride in their local heritage and culture. It was a glorious opportunity to learn about the

work of King Abdulaziz who unified and founded modern-day Saudi Arabia on 23rd September, 1932.

It is worthy to mention that a tent was installed in the school main hall with a corner in which

artifacts from the past were displayed. These included old currency, a sword, a goat-skin bottle,

Learners’ personal statements

As an MYP student, I had mixed feelings about the pro- gramme in the beginning, however now I appreciate the work, heart and integrity put in by our teachers to teach at this level. The teachers and students in the school remind me of a big family the cultural day we recently had showed that we as students flourished. More events like this should be held as it shows parents and visitors alike that we are MYP and PYP students who follow the programme with passion and commitment. We effectively improved our ATL skills and learner profile attributes in the real world.

Fahd Faisal, Grade 8

Being a student in an IB school is a privilege. I have felt welcome from the first day. The teachers do their best to meet students; needs and they also take their individual differences into considera- tion. My classmates and I are encouraged to contribute and ques- tion what we learn. This enables us to deepen our understanding of knowledge. We also enjoy a multicultural environment where many students and staff come from different backgrounds. Such a wide exposure to other cultures has helped us as students to look at things from different perspectives and raised our awareness as well. The school staff are always kind and helpful and the facilities pro- vided make the time we spend at school rewarding and enjoyable. I hope that someday in the near future all children have access to IB

schooling..

Being an IB student has helped me a lot, both in school and in my daily life. I be- came an open-minded person and my

thinking skills have improved a lot espe- cially in the last two years. Thanks to all the teachers in the school for their hard

work.

Hello. My name is Mahoud Amr and I am from Grade 7. For the past six years, I was a PYP student which stands for the Primary Years Programme. This programme supports students to ac- quire knowledge and develop skills and attitudes. I am delight- ed to be an MYP student this year as I am becoming more knowledgeable and an effective communicator. The MYP has supported me to develop my reading, speaking and presentation skills. I am also happy because I am learning how to do research and grow as an autonomous learner.

Hi! My name is Wassim and I am a student in Grade

6. I am very happy to study at King Abdulaziz School. King abdulaziz school gave a very important experi- ence in my life and taught me a lot of things that made me different from others. For example, King

Abdulaziz School taught me how to be an independ- ent learner because I could do my summative tasks

on my own without anybody’s help. Also, this year the

teachers were trying to make us communicate be- cause nobody could live without friends. I would like

to thank all my teachers for their efforts and for eve- rything.

The MYP is a concept and skills- based curriculum that promotes student inquiry. The power of this lies in students being able to think critically and creatively in asking questions and, in the Sciences and Math's, designing their own testable generaliza- tions and hypotheses. Units are set within a global context, determining the knowledge and content to be covered, but the emphasis of the teaching and learning is on key concepts. An emphasis upon conceptual understandings is important because it enables students to make sense of content and knowledge. In the age of the knowledge economy, when so much information is available at their fingertips, young people need larger conceptual aware- ness as a framework for building understanding
