Semi-annual newsletter about Augustana VolleyballTRANSCRIPT
Happy New Year! Our goal in 2011 is to connect our
alumni, fans, and community with
the student-athletes in our pro-
gram. We hope that through this
newsletter, you will be informed
of upcoming events, alumni
whereabouts, and the accomplish-
ments of our players. Blessings and Go Vikings!
Our team finished the 2010 season ranked 7th (out of 14) in the highly competitive Northern Sun Confer-ence. Although we did not accomplish our goal of making the Regional Tournament, the team steadily improved throughout the season and unfortunately lost more than a few 5-set matches to Nationally Ranked teams. A wise coach once said….“You can-not experience the joy of being a champion until
you’ve had your heart broken.” This best describes my feelings toward our

Kasey Loeslie enters her second season with the Augustana volleyball program after serving the 2009 season as a graduate assistant. No stranger to the NSIC, Loeslie had a stellar career at con-ference-neighbor SMSU. A two-time All-NSIC pick, Loeslie ended her career at SMSU ranked third in attack percentage (.313) and sixth in block assists (309) and total blocks (350). She finished her career with 853 kills, 350 blocks in 129 matches. In 2008, Loeslie was also named All-Central Region and AVCA All-America third team. Loeslie will complete her master’s degree in May and will be married on June 18, 2011.
Lisa Hoegh is in her first year as a graduate assis-tant volleyball coach at Augustana. A 2009 graduate of Augustana with degrees in business communication and sports management, Hoegh was a standout setter with the Viking vol-leyball team from 2005 to 2008. During her ten-ure at Augustana, she amassed 3,826 assists and earned All-North Central Conference honors as a junior and All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate acco-lades as a senior. Hoegh is currently working towards her third degree in Elementary Edcuation and will be mar-ried on June 11, 2011.
season following our final match. We learned some tough lessons this year; mainly, that the difference between winning and losing is in the ability to execute at the end of games. This will be an area of focus this spring and I’m confi-dent that we’ll be better prepared to finish when given the opportunity next fall. Thankfully we return all but one starter for the 2011 season and do not graduate anyone until 2013. Cheers to a bright future! - AB
Megan Bezdicek, Brianna Erickson, Dani Haley, and Chantel Tengwall made the 2010 Fall NSIC All– Academic Team. Dani Haley was named to the Missouri S&T All-Tournament Team and Grace Sanders
earned NSIC Honarable Mention for the second year in a row. Con-gratulations ladies!

Congratulations Stephanie Kjorness Barth for being inducted into the Augustana Hall of Fame in 2010!
Dig Pink Vikings fight breast cancer at volleyball match!
In an effort to raise money for breast cancer research and help support victims, survivors and families, Augustana's volleyball team hosted a “Dig Pink” event during its match against Northern State University on October 23rd, 2010. During the match Augie Volley-ball also recognized 20 breast cancer survi-vors from the Sioux Falls Community. All proceeds went to the Side-Out Foundation which was established in 2004 to unite vol-leyball players and coaches and to have them work toward the common goal of furthering
breast cancer awareness, education and pa-tient services. Over the last two years, Au-gustana volleyball players have raised nearly $4,000 to support Side-Out's efforts. This year the team met their highest goal ever of contributing over $2,000 to the organization in 2010. Be sure to mark your calen-dars and join us October, 2011 to fight breast cancer!
In October, the Augustana Volleyball Team recognized faculty that have impacted them as student-athletes. A special thanks to all that were honored: Becky Fiala, Marcia Entwistle, Laura Hybert-son, Mark Larson, Simon Ferrell, Amy Lewis, Julie Ashworth, Brandon Barkus, Craig Spencer, Sam Ogdie, Shelly Gardner, Richard Bowman, Timothy Sorenson.
The 2000 national runner-up and NCC championship volleyball team was honored at the Hall of Fame banquet during Vikings Days.

80’s - Carmen (Smith) Hecht - (1983-1986 & coached 1988-1989)
Congratulations “Coach of the Year” Kati Newgard -(2004-2008)
Augie Career: Excelling in not only volleyball but basketball, softball, Concert Band, Brass Choir, Brass Ensemble, Northlanders Jazz Band and staying ac-tive in Fellowship of Chris-tian Athletes, Page was somehow able to balance it all. “I was in the first group of female athletes that re-ceived scholarship money, and the most one female could get was $600. Life was different.” Page was inducted into
the Augustana Hall of
Fame in 1993!
Interesting details: “I spend most of my competi-
tive opportunity now play-ing racquetball. I have nu-merous titles and have
medaled at the US Open 5 times.” … “I am soft-hearted and cry easily at movies, some com-mercials, personal stories; I love to play with my camera; I enjoy kayaking; I don't like clutter; chocolate is a staple of life; I still play my trumpet; I played rac-quetball in Aruba for a week; give me a morning horse ride, an afternoon of nature photography, and an evening of kayaking and it is a great day. Currently: Page now lives in Windom, MN and has been working for Thrivent Financial since 1982. She has two chil-dren, Tucker (28) and Mesa (26) both who also graduated from Augustana.
2009 Augustana Graduate, Kati Newgard, was voted Section South 3A Coach of the Year in
her first year as a Head Coach. Murray County Central, located in Slayton, MN, went 11-0
in the Red-Rock Conference and ended with an overall record of 20-5-3.
After college: After per-forming on the court she became the head coach at Augustana from 1988-1989. “I was honored to have the opportunity to coach at the college level! To be able to continue to participate in the sport that I loved was fantastic. It was definitely a challenging move to go from playing to coaching. As a young leader with little help (in terms of assistant coaches and budget) it was difficult to recruit effec-tively and set up travel needs (does anyone remem-
ber the Borgie van?) It was fun working with talented, athletic women!”
Currently: Carmen has now worked at the Elmen Center for 22 years and holds the position of Rec-reation Coordinator in the Recreational Services De-partment. Her husband, Mark, of 23 years has also worked at the Elmen Center for 22 years as the Director of Recreational Services. They have 3 kids, Keegan (18), Peyton (16) and Cale (14).
Augie Career: Carmen is a member of the 1,000 Kill Club, was a two time cap-tain, received all-conference accolades twice as well as honorable mention, and was named NCC player of the week among many other recognition's.

Is this where you pictured
yourself when you were a
student at Augie? “I would-n’t change a thing! We al-ways knew we wanted chil-dren, and having 7 and being able to stay home and raise them is a huge blessing. I use a lot of the discipline and or-ganization that was needed to be a student-athlete in my daily life.
Interesting details: “Besides the 7 kids?!? Our church
helps to support an orphanage in India and I also run the chapel services for the wives/girlfriends of the Colorado Rockies.”

Currently: Teresa lives in New York City “I am a coordinator in the Bas-ketball Operations Inter-national Department at
the NBA League office in NYC. I assist with logistics for the NBA's in-ternational basketball development initiatives. I also do a lot of research on basketball throughout the world.”
“A huge perk about my current posi-tion is the opportunity I have to travel across the globe. I've been to India, South Africa, China, Mexico, Singa-pore, Spain and Senegal over the past three years for Basketball Projects.”
Augustana Career: Teresa was a member of the 2000 National Runner-up team and a 2003 All-North Cen-tral Conference team member.
Favorite Volleyball Memory: “Going undefeated at home my senior year (2003) and being named NCC conference champs. It was a very close group of dedi-cated ladies who had worked very hard to accomplish this goal. It also said a lot about the support we had from the Augustana community.”
Advice for current studentAdvice for current studentAdvice for current studentAdvice for current student----athletes: athletes: athletes: athletes: “Really try to enjoy the moment. Don't dwell on the negative and look for the positive. Put yourself in a position to succeed. It goes by so fast and very few people have a chance to replicate the elite level of competition and team camaraderie after a college athletic career is over.”
Augustana Career: Dianne received the 1995 NCC Stan Marshall Award, was a 1994 AVCA All-America 1st team, and Diane was inducted into
the Augustana Hall of Fame
in 2004! Family: Bryan and I just cele-brated our 16th wedding anni-versary! We have 7 kiddos: Brynn (14), Abigail (12), Emily (10), Hayden (7), Grady (5), Nolan (4) and Landry (2). We live in Broomfield, CO.
Brianna was the 2009 and 2010 team captain. She graduated this fall with degrees in Nursing and Spanish.
Memorable volleyball moment: “This is not related to competition, but I loved preparing a dance for the women's walk!”
Advice for current studentAdvice for current studentAdvice for current studentAdvice for current student----athletes: athletes: athletes: athletes: “Enjoy every minute of your experience with your
