What is volleyball?

» Volleyballisaninternationalsport,playedby2teamsof6playerswhohitaballoveranettoeachother,predominantlyusingtheirhandsandforearms.

» Eachteamisallowednomorethanthreetouchesinarowtogettheballbacktotheopposition’ssideofthecourt.

» Asingleplayercannotcontacttheballonconsecutivehits.

» Theobjectofthegameistoscorepointsbywinningarally.Therallyiswonwhen:

– oneteamdoesnotreturntheballinsidethreehits – theballlandsoutofcourt – oneteamissuccessfulinhittingtheballsoit

landsonthefloor/groundintheopposition’scourtarea,or

– afaultiscommittedbyoneteam.

» Thewinnerofeachrallynotonlyscoresapoint,butalsotherighttoservetostartthenextrally.

» Teamschangeendsaftereachset.

Tworefereescontrolthegameandmakedecisionsaccordingtotherulesandtheskillsoftheplayers.Theiraimistomakethegameenjoyable,safeandasfree-flowingaspossible.Tobequalified,refereeshavetopasspracticalandtheorytests,butagoodgamecantakeplacewithresponsiblepeopleactingasumpiresforrecreationalgames.

mini volleyball (modified) rules

VolleyballisverydifferenttomostothersportscommonlyplayedinAustralia.Noothersportrequirestheballtoreboundoffthebodyasthenaturalmeansofplayingtheball.Thiscanoftenmakeitdifficultforyoungerplayerstolearnbecausetheyhavenotransferofexperiencesfromothersportsoractivitiestohelpthemlearn.Thismeansthatinitialsuccesscanbeminimalanditisvitaltoofferpositiveencouragementandrecogniseanysuccess.

Toencouragechildrenandcaterfortheirphysicaldevelopment,minivolleyballhasbeendevelopedasamodifiedversionofthesport.Themajormodificationsare:

» asmallersizedcourt(13mx6.5m),sothatplayershavetodefendlessarea

» alowernetheight(of2m)toincreasethelikelihoodoftheballgoingoverthenet

» asofterandlighterballthatreducesimpact

» 4playersonthecourtratherthan6,toincreasetheinvolvementofplayers,and

» forcedrotationifaplayerwins3servesinarow.

tips for delivering volleyball

FollowingaresomespecifictipsfordeliveringPlayingforLifevolleyball:

» Itisstronglyrecommendedthatamodifiedmini-volleyball(size4)beusedwhendeliveringthisprogramtochildrentomaximisetheirenjoymentfromtheexperience.Similarsizedballsmaybeused(e.g.asoccerball,netball,softballsetc)althoughtheseballswillnotbeassuitableforsomevolleyball-relatedactivities.Heavyballssuchasbasketballswillhurtwhentheyreboundofftheplayer’sarmsandarenotrecommended.

» Wherethisbookreferstoavolleyballnet,itispossibletousesimilarobjects/conceptssuchasno-goorneutralzone,bench,ropeetctoallowchildrentoexperiencetheconceptofplayingoveranet.Ifusingarope,itisrecommendedthatcolouredribbonsorsimilararetiedtotheropetomakeitmorevisibleandreducethelikelihoodofparticipantinjuryasaresultofrunningintotherope.

» Wherereferencehasbeenmadetoactivitiesoccurringonavolleyballcourtoranareaofsimilarsize,itisbesttoinvolvenomorethan12childrenpercourt.

» Forsafety,itisrecommendedthatatleast3metresbeallowedbetweenthemarkedcourtareaandimmovableobjectssuchaswallsor,ifoutside,eventrees.

» Volleyballisateamsportthatrequirescooperativeplayamongteammemberstobesuccessful.Teamsshouldbeencouragedtouseallthreecontactspermittedeachtimetheballcomesoverthenetanditispreferredthatthreedifferentplayersmakeeachcontact.

this is a modified version of volleyball, played on a smaller court. the team that wins the rally remains on the court and becomes king/Queen. the losing team leaves the court to be replaced by the next challenger. When a team beats the king/Queen, they move to the other side of the net to replace the king/Queen. (Play with 3 teams of 4.)

Whilethesportisstillbecomingestablishedattheprimaryschoollevel,ithasadefinitepresenceathighschoollevel.Teamsparticipateinweeklyleaguesandmoststates/territorieshaveanannualStateSchoolsCupevent.ThepinnacleatthislevelistheAustralianVolleyballSchoolsCup,anannualeventheldeachDecemberwithmorethan3,500studentsfromeverystateandterritoryandregularteamsfromhighschoolsoverseas.ThiseventisthelargestofitskindforanysportinAustralia.
