Just like the exciting and exhilarating Golf R, which was launched in February, 2014 has rocketed into the sunset at a pace unmatched before. This blistering pace is in no small part due to the industriousness required during tougher trading conditions and general depressed economic climate. May posted negative GDP growth, the real inflation rate is rising, and household income is under duress with disposable income at a cyclical low. The labour situation in the mining sector has a negative knock-on effect for the Rand exchange rate versus the major global currencies. This then directly impacts vehicle pricing, while pressure to increase prices in a very sensitive and cash-strapped market continues to build.

But despite these usual harbingers of economic doom and gloom, the Volkswagen passenger Brand remains the market leader for the 2014 year-to-date. Market share remains unrivalled at 19.9%. The Volkswagen product range continues to offer benchmark technologies and tactile experiences without compromising on reliability and safety. When packaged with our industry-leading customer service experience, Dealer-network footprint and range of customised solutions for big and small fleets, Volkswagen will continue to offer an unrivalled combination of services for both the retail and Fleet customer.

And to further bolster our Fleet product offer, this year’s exciting news sees the introduction of the new and improved Polo, which, with significant German “under-the-skin” technological improvements and class-leading aesthetic enhancements, will no doubt continue to be one of South Africa’s most beloved compact hatches and offer the Fleet buyer an unrivalled product. Please read on to get insight into our excitement about a past Car-of-the-Year winner that just got better.

2. First Half 2014 Volkswagen Sales PerformanceThe first half of 2014 represented strong results for the Volkswagen Passenger Brand with sales of 40 258 units. While this is down on 2013 year-to-date due to the well documented economic pressures facing consumers in South Africa (down by a mere 3 890 units or -8.81%), this is still the second strongest first half performance since 2010, and passenger vehicle market share reaching a dominant position of 19.9%, whilst total Dealer share performed at 16.7%.

The success of our Fleet vehicles Polo Vivo, Polo, Golf and Jetta continues to grow, and this is evident in the overall sales performance of our current generation models:

• Polo Vivo: 143 881 units sold since introduction in March 2010

• Polo: 109 600 units sold since introduction in January 2010

• Golf: 11 050 units sold since introduction in February 2012

• Jetta: 11 869 units sold since introduction in September 2011

3. Polo2014 is shaping up to be another red-hot year for Volkswagen with the launch of the fire-breathing New Golf R, and most importantly, the New Polo.

Featuring big car technology in a compact package, while enjoying its status as the second best-selling passenger car in South Africa (second only to Polo Vivo), the Polo has become a part of the South African motoring way of life. Brimming with quality, style, comfort and technology, the New Polo will give you the confidence to believe that anything is possible.

In October 2002 the Polo was introduced. Included in the four-model range was a 3-cylinder diesel, the Polo 1.4 TDI. This car scooped the Car of the Year award in 2003.

In March 2003 the new Polo Classic was launched.

In August 2003, Volkswagen South Africa announced that it would be building Polos for export to the Asia Pacific Region.

During July 2005 the facelifted Polo range was launched.

On January 2006, the 200 000th Polo left the production line, and in September 2006 a 1.6 77kW Polo Automatic joined the range along with the 1.8 Turbo Polo GTI.

June 2007 saw the launch of the Cross Polo 1.9 TDI. At the end of the 2008 rally season, the BP VW Team, driving their S 2000 Polos claimed the top three spots in the SA Rally Championship. It was the fourth consecutive year that Polos had won the championship.

April 2009 saw the 400 000th Polo leave the production line.

History was made for both Port Elizabeth and Volkswagen Group South Africa on 29 April 2010 when the largest shipment of cars ever through the port was exported. 2 600 Polos and Cross Polos were loaded on a Singapore registered ship, the Morning Cello. The record was shattered a few months later on 31 October when 3 141 Polos and Cross Polos were loaded aboard the UK registered, Tortugas, bound for Emden, Germany.

In November 2010, Polo scooped many awards, the most prestigious being a runner-up in Japan’s Car of the year for 2010/2011 as well as Japan’s Imported Car of the Year. It was a great achievement, seeing as the cars were built in Uitenhage.

In March 2011, the Polo was a joint winner of the SAGMJ Wesbank Car of the Year, along with the BMW 530d.

Featuring a host of safety features you’d expect to find in much larger and more expensive cars, the New Polo pushes the boundaries of what is expected from a compact hatch. Multi-Collision braking, a revolutionary new system that first appeared in the New Golf, brings your car to a safe stop in the event of an accident by slowing you down at the point of contact, thereby preventing a secondary collision.

Hill-hold assist keeps you steady on hills and inclines, while ESP now comes as standard across the range. Additional safety features include improved impact resistance, crumple zones, rear fog light, high-level rear brake light and ISOFIX child seat mountings. The New Polo also features an advanced airbag system with four airbags and improved ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake-force distribution).

We’re also thrilled to announce that a 3-year / 45 000 km Service Plan comes STANDARD across the New Polo range.

Introducing the New Polo.

While the exterior of the New Polo may not be a drastic change over its predecessor, step into the cabin and you are greeted to what essentially feels like the New Golf, scaled down. Premium materials, quality fittings and finishes, a new-generation multifunction steering wheel and an advanced touchscreen infotainment system immerse you in a modern world of luxury.

11

Interior.

Sculpted to perfection, the dynamic angles and sophisticated lines of the New Polo speak a language of pure attitude and ambition. Although the changes from its predecessor are subtle, the New Polo is bolder, edgier and packed with a lot more sporty style. With a choice between the Trendline, Comfortline and new Highline ranges, there’s no wrong way to unleash your confidence.

The distinctive Polo grille now has two horizontal middle panels, giving its confident smirk an added touch of sophistication. The lower grille has a sporty chrome strip that shoots across the front and cradles the front fog lights.

Its headlights have a narrower, more aggressive contour, leading the way on the road with style and purpose.

The signature tail-lights are designed with elegantly-styled lines, which complement the innovation and modern elements of the car.

The new design of the alloy wheels leaves no question that sporty attitude fused with design flair come standard on the New Polo.

How do you make a cleaner, more efficient engine without compromising on the drive? Volkswagen has never failed to break new grounds and set new standards and the New Polo is no different. It incorporates the award-winning TSI (Turbo Stratified Injection) engine technology across all models so you’ll never have to choose between performance and economy again. The TSI 1.2 litre engines offer enhanced performance superior to many 1.6 litre engines, combining innovative direct injection and turbocharging. These engines are also smaller, lighter and have less impact on the environment by reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. All this, while keeping your drive as powerful and pleasing as ever.

Projects implemented

A recently installed Automated Fresh Water Conditioning System for the Paint Shop Reverse Osmosis System has the benefit of saving 33 271 m3 per year. The unique parameter controller utilises real-time online monitoring and automated chemical dosing, which allows for changes in incoming water quality to be chemically treated as they occur. As a result, the membranes are protected and the efficiency of separation is increased, which results in water savings.

A specifically engineered roof for the Paint Shop Chiller units was installed, which has allowed the ambient temperature surrounding the chillers to be reduced. Due to this improvement, the chillers require less electricity to dissipate the excess heat generated by the units resulting in a saving of 161 MWh & 165 tons CO2 per year.

The Think Blue. Factory strategy aims to meet a target of 25% reduction in energy, water, waste and Solvent and CO2 emissions by 2018.

By the end of 2013, Volkswagen Group South Africa has reduced Energy consumption by 20%, Waste produced by 26 %, Water consumption by 40%, CO2 emissions by 14% and Solvent emissions have been reduced by 18%.
